Hollywood was bubbling with intrigue on Tuesday after Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron revived accusations that “a famous director” sexually harassed her early in her career.
Theron, promoting her new film Bombshell, which details sexual harassment at Fox News under the late CEO Roger Ailes, told how she herself had been subjected to harassment.
Theron told NPR radio that playing former Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly allowed her to explore what she called the “grey area” of sexual harassment.
“It’s not always physical assault. It’s not always rape,” she said. “There’s a psychological damage that happens for women in the everyday casualness of language, touch or threat — threat of losing your job. Those are things I’ve definitely encountered.”
She told how, in 1994, she had just moved to Los Angeles when a “famous director” invited her to an audition at his home one Saturday night.

When she showed up, the director opened the door in his “Hugh Hefner pyjamas” and touched her leg as she sat on the sofa: she apologised and left in a hurry.
She told the radio station that, driving away, she became angry with herself.
“I just kept hitting the steering wheel,” she said. “I put a lot of blame on myself, that I didn’t say all the right things, and that I didn’t tell him to take a hike, and that I didn’t do all of those things that we so want to believe we’ll do in those situations.”
The South African-born actress first told of the incident in 2009, speaking to OK! Magazine. She mentioned it again in April this year, while promoting Long Shot, telling radio host Howard Stern that she had been shocked by the encounter.
“I had just turned 19, I might have still been 18. I had never been out for an audition,” she told Stern.
“I asked this modelling agent if she’d heard of anything. She said, ‘Yep. Go to this guy’s house. It’s on Saturday at 9pm.
“He had a very healthy ego, he felt very good about himself.
“There was some kind of muzak playing in the house. He sat very close to me. That was strange. The drinking bothered me. I was like, ‘This doesn’t feel right.’”
Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen at the premiere of Long Shot in New York, in April. It was while promoting Long Shot that she spoke to Stern and detailed the harassment
Theron said she kept asking if he wanted her to read the pages of a script she had been given, to which he replied they were just going to talk.
“And then at one point, he put his hand on my knee,” she said. “You just go blank. Like you don’t know what to do, but I left.
“I don’t even know how I got out of the house, but I left. It would have ended really badly.
“I was driving my Ford Fiesta, that I was renting, up Laurel Canyon and I was so angry with myself that I didn’t say something.
“I was like, I’m not that kind of girl. Why did I not tell him to go **** himself? It made me so angry.”
She described him to Stern as a producer, and said: “He was a very big deal and is still a big deal.”
She told Stern that, eight years later, after making her name, she confronted him. She said he had no recollection of meeting her.
“I had my moment,” she said.
Theron has been a strong supporter of the #MeToo movement, and, in an interview with The New York Times, published earlier this month, told how Harvey Weinstein used his power to manipulate women. She said he lied about having sex with her, in order to entice other women to sleep with him.
“Pitting women against each other? Weinstein was really, really good at that,” she told the paper.
“There was a lot of, like, ‘Well, I’m talking to Gwyneth for this movie …’
“One of his lines was that Renée [Zellweger] and I slept with him to get jobs. There was no limit to him. Even in the sexual favours, he would still pit us against each other.”

Weinstein, who goes on trial in January for sexual assault and rape, has always denied accusations of non-consensual sex.
Zellweger, through a spokesman, denied in 2017 that she had slept with Weinstein to further her career.
Theron, 44, has also spoken while promoting the film about how her mother killed her father in front of her, describing him as an alcoholic and a "very sick man."
She told how, in 1991, he tried to get into the house – belligerent, drunk and armed with a gun. Theron and her mother, Gerda, tried to stop him.
"Both of us were leaning against the door from the inside to have him not be able to push through,” she told People.
“He took a step back and just shot through the door three times.
"None of those bullets ever hit us, which is just a miracle. But in self-defence, she ended the threat."
She said that she was “not ashamed” to speak about her traumatic childhood, and said she wanted to end the stigma surrounding abusive families.
“I do think that the more we talk about these things, the more we realise we are not alone in any of it,” she said.
“I think, for me, it’s just always been that this story really is about growing up with addicts and what that does to a person.”

Scott Parker has vowed Fulham will learn lessons from their mistakes last time in the Premier League and will not make drastic changes.
Left-back Joe Bryan was the surprise hero at Wembley on Tuesday with the first brace of his career sending the Whites back to the top flight with a 2-1 extra-time victory over local rivals Brentford.
It is the second time in three years Fulham have won the Sky Bet Championship play-off final, but they endured a torrid most recent season in the Premier League.
FEATURE: Brentford freeze as Fulham thrive on a night of contradictions
Despite spending over £100million on eight permanent signings plus five high-profile loans ahead of the 2018-19 campaign, the Craven Cottage club shipped 81 goals and finished 19th.
“You can’t build teams with drastic changes and drastic swings of players, you can’t do that,” Parker said.
“This team have been around myself for the best part of 15 months and they’ve improved, improved and improved.
“A lot more improvement needs to be done, for sure, but I am happy with where we are.
“Of course we will need additions, we are going into the biggest league there is and we will need to add, but for sure no drastic changes.”
Parker was one of three managers Fulham used during their most recent stint in the Premier League with both Slavisa Jokanovic and Claudio Ranieri sacked by owner Shahid Khan.
After relative stability between 2000 to 2010, this past decade has seen nine different men in the Craven Cottage hot seat.
Throughout the campaign Parker has spoken about core foundations and, no matter what happens next season, he feels Fulham are in a strong place.
He added: “There were some clear errors made last time and we will learn from that and need to.
“We are going into the best league in the world, the best players and best teams and it is a brutal league.
“I realise the challenge ahead. I don’t want to think about it at the moment because I want to enjoy what we have done so far, but we all understand and will learn from them mistakes.
“What we are trying to build and ingrain in these players and in this football club is core foundations and them core foundations get you far in life.
“You can have as much talent as you want – if you are not building on concrete and you are building on sand it will be the rollercoaster ride.
“I hope we can grow gradually. It will be tough and if we can’t, we have core foundations to fall back on.”
Tottenham are closing in on a deal for Southampton midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, with Kyle Walker-Peters set to move the other way, according to reports.
Spurs have chased the Denmark international heavily over the past few months. Indeed reports claimed he is boss Jose Mourinho’s top target this summer.
Everton were also keen but, according to the Daily Mail, Tottenham have made a crucial breakthrough.
Talks have further advanced and the newspaper now claims Spurs will strike a £15million deal “this week”.
FEATURE: A (shy and) retiring XI featuring world, European champions
Hojbjerg looked likely to leave after announcing his lofty career ambitions to become a Champions League winner. After that, he refused a new contract and manager Ralph Hasenhuttl stripped him of the captaincy.
The 25-year-old has entered the final year of his deal, meaning Southampton have had to bring their valuation down. The Saints initially wanted as much as £35million, but the financial impact of the pandemic has also forced the price south.
Everton had reportedly agreed terms but Hojbjerg has held out for his favoured club, the Daily Mail adds.
Alongside the deal for Hojbjerg, Tottenham full-back Kyle Walker-Peters will go the other way, the source claims.
The England Under-21 international impressed with the Saints in his half-season loan agreed in January and the south coast club are close to signing him for £12million.
Last month, Mourinho admitted that he would not say no to Walker-Peters securing a permanent move away.
He said: “He’s happy now I think. Playing and playing well. I’m not in control of the transfer decisions but the general feeling is there’s a place for him here.
“But if his desire is to be playing every time and leaving the club in search of happiness I don’t think we’d stop him. He’s a player with a good value in the market but I don’t think we’d stop him doing it.”
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was reportedly ready to put Jude Bellingham straight into the Manchester United squad, but Ed Woodward and the Glazer family were unwilling to sanction a deal to bring him to Old Trafford.
The teenager opted to move to Borussia Dortmund, and ESPN have now claimed United refused to match the Bundesliga club’s £56,000-a-week offer.
Woodward and the Glazer’s were uncomfortable in spending nearly £3million a year on wages for a player with just one year of senior football under his belt.
Solksjaer was reportedly set to put Bellingham straight into the first-team squad, and predicted he would make at least 20 appearances in his first season, but this assurance was not enough to persuade the United bosses.
FEATURE: Five players Manchester City must ditch this summer
Bellingham is already in training at his new club as they started pre-season this week.
After his move, the 17-year-old said: “I chose Borussia Dortmund because it is the perfect step for my development. I am just glad that saga is over.
“It was a lot of annoyance to me and there was a lot of noise around at the time when all I wanted to do was play for Birmingham City.
“Now I haven’t got the chance to do that anymore but I would like to think I made the most of it. I am really looking forward to the future.
“The record Dortmund have got with young players in recent years is unrivalled in European football.
“Weighing all that up and the people we met there , the stadium and fanbase, it made me fall in love with that club as well.
“I’ve met Jadon Sancho and we have spoke. He is a great example of what you can achieve if you go out there and do the right things.
“It is a credit to himself and the work Dortmund do. I know if I work hard there will be chances and I will try and take them.”
Paul Merson claims Harry Redknapp was a better tactician than Arsene Wenger, having played under both managers for Portsmouth and Arsenal respectively.
Merson won two top-flight league titles, an FA Cup, the League Cup and a European Cup Winners’ Cup with Arsenal, before captaining Pompey to the 2002-03 Division One title in his only season at Fratton Park.
And he claims that in that one year under Redknapp, he found the Englishman to be the better manager.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ Off Script podcast (via The News), Merson said: “He (Redknapp) is 100 per cent the best man-manager I ever worked under, by a million miles.
“As a man, knowing what you want or what you need, you know, you can tell him what you need, he wouldn’t tell you what you need – I think that was a massive thing with him.
“The thing I get the hump with with Harry is people (say) ‘oh, he’s a wheeler-dealer, what a wheeler and dealer’, but his knowledge of football is second to none.
“I honestly think he’s tactically better than Arsene Wenger, in my opinion.
“You know, I worked under both. Tactically, if I know a manager wants to set up, make sure we don’t lose a game and stop the other team playing, for me Harry’s the man.
“It’s like with George Graham, that sort.
“Arsene went out, he had unbelievable players.
“If you have Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp, Pires, Vieira, Petit, people like that, and Overmars and Ljungberg, if I’m the manager of Arsenal and I know I’ve got them players, I’m opening the football match up.
“I’m looking to expand, to go end-to-end, because if it does there’s only one winner – and that’s Arsene because of the players I’ve just reeled off.
“But when you’ve got a manager who hasn’t got that quality of player, and you’ve got to set up, that’s why I think Harry’s a phenomenal manager.”
Merson made 49 appearances for Redknapp’s side in 2002-03, scoring 12 goals in total, as Pompey won the title with 98 points to secure their first ever season in the Premier League.
He is considered to be a Portsmouth legend, but insists none of it would have been possible without the players Redknapp assembled at tht time.
Merson added: “He (Redknapp) put a team together. He put a team together and he went bang, bang, bang and he brought players into certain positions and it clicked. We had top players.
“Again, I keep on going back to people going ‘oh, Mersey, you got us promoted, you’re here at Portmouth’ but I played in a phenomenal football team, a phenomenal Championship team and I’m the first to say, ‘I’m no good if I don’t have good players round me’.
“If I ain’t got players round me who are on the same wavelength as me who are good players (shrugs his shoulders).
“For me there was some special players – Tim Sherwood, what a player, won the Premier League, central midfield player.
“I was also with Steve Stone at Aston Villa – no-one wants to win a football match more than Stone.
“I mean, he’d run through a brick wall for you.
“And then we had young good players and centre-halves.
“When I got there I said to Harry, ‘what about Linvoy Primus?’
“He had no chance of playing, he had no chance of playing, he was a million miles from playing for Portsmouth again.
“He played the year before and he got in the team and he was the best player in the team.
“He was our best player and it just shows you.
“We had strong-minded players who waited and waited and then they got their chance and it was ‘I’m not coming out of the team’.
“I mean, you had Yakubu and Todorov, I didn’t even have to look.
“I got the ball and I went bang, and I knew they were going to be there.
“But it doesn’t matter how many good balls you put through, they’re only good balls if someone scores.”
