Democrats' satisfaction with 2020 candidates among highest in decades: Gallup

Three-quarters of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents are pleased with the selection of the party’s candidates in the 2020 presidential contest, which is among the highest levels of satisfaction measured in decades, according to a survey released Wednesday.

The Gallup poll found that 75 percent of respondents said they were pleased with the large list of contenders while 21 percent said they wished someone outside the field was running for the nomination.

The poll found that 85 percent of those who identified as ideologically liberal said they were satisfied with the field, while 71 percent who identified as moderate and 54 percent of conservative Democrats and leaners said the same.

“I was at an event and I was speaking, and for the first time in my life I said to somebody, get me a chair I have to sit down,” Sanders told CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta at an interview in his Burlington, Vt., home. “I was sweating profusely, and normally we do selfies, and we get questions, and we have discussions. I was in no state to do that.”

Sanders said he and his staff headed to an Urgent Care in Las Vegas after he experienced pain in his arm before he was quickly diagnosed with having a heart attack.

The senator said he then underwent a 45 minute procedure at Desert Springs Hospital.

Sanders told Gupta that his doctors informed him that he was “on the road to a full recovery.”

“I feel great. I have not an ounce of pain. I’ve been walking around a lot, playing ball with the kids,” he said. “I feel very confident that we’re going to be running a very, very rigorous campaign.”

While Sanders is missing an LGBT presidential town hall in Los Angeles on Thursday, his campaign has said he will participate in the fourth Democratic primary debate in Westerville, Ohio, on Tuesday.

Sanders left the hospital on Friday after having two stents placed in a blocked coronary artery as a result of the heart attack.

Pessimism mounts in Brussels over Brexit talks ‘disaster’

When it comes to Brexit, Brussels is still hoping for the best, but expecting the worst.

The seventh formal round of post-Brexit talks ended last week in a familiar stalemate and mutual blame, capping off a summer of very little progress in the negotiations. Since then, pessimism is mounting in Brussels over the prospects for a deal on the future relationship with the U.K.

“If we don’t have a breakthrough in the week of September 7, it’s hard to see how we can still avoid a disaster,” said one EU official closely involved in the talks. “But the prospects of such a breakthrough don’t look good at all.”

In his virtual tour of capitals this week, the EU’s chief negotiator Michel Barnier reiterated that message. According to an official from an EU country, Barnier said that given the lack of progress in the talks over the summer, “the prospects of a deal has fallen.”

“The Brexit mood is just very, very pessimistic,” an EU diplomat said.

October showdown

EU officials insist the next formal round of talks in London in the week of September 7 will be crucial to ruling out a no-deal scenario before the transition period ends on December 31.

In order to get from a political agreement to hundreds of pages of technical negotiated texts on time, both sides will have to see at least the beginnings of a compromise on the most sensitive issues in the next round. This is crucial to pin down the deal by the European Council summit in October. A deal has to be struck before the end of October in order to get it ratified by the European and British parliaments in time.

For that to happen, there is now continuous contact between Brussels and London between formal rounds of talks, officials on both sides of the Channel said.

But on what the EU sees as the core issues — fisheries and level playing field — both sides still seem to be talking past each other. Brussels insists it wants more clarity on London’s future state aid rules to unlock the talks, to ensure the U.K. does not undercut the EU in the future. But Downing Street is determined to have leeway on state subsidies to assist its coronavirus recovery, and refuses to set out its new regime according to the EU’s timetable.

The U.K.’s refusal to engage in negotiations on these sensitive topics has only angered EU capitals further and strengthened the sense of unity among the 27 member countries. On his tour of the bloc, Barnier has not received any sign from national leaders to divert course from his current negotiating mandate.

“The U.K. must bring concrete answers,” France’s newly appointed EU affairs minister, Clement Beaune, tweeted this week. “France and Germany are strongly mobilized to protect the interests of EU citizens and businesses. Access to the European market means respecting our rules.”

And while there has been progress on other aspects of the negotiations, such as trade in goods and trade in services, the EU insists on “parallelism” in the negotiations and blocks progress in one area as long as there isn’t any progress made in others. London says this is slowing down the talks. The EU on the other hand sees it as the only way to make sure the negotiations don’t end with a series of mini-deals that only benefit the U.K.

“Basically the talks have become a game of chicken, waiting for the first one to blink on level playing field,” said another EU diplomat. “And if no one blinks, we crash.”

Leaders’ involvement

Officials hope that national and EU leaders’ involvement might prevent such a crash. The feeling in Brussels is that U.K. chief Brexit negotiator David Frost doesn’t have the authority from Prime Minister Boris Johnson to make compromises.

Some officials on both sides of the Channel are also counting on German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s leadership, as Germany currently holds the presidency of the Council of the EU.

But for now, there’s no sign of any leader — from Johnson to Merkel to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen — getting involved. At a 90-minute press conference on Friday, Merkel spoke only one sentence on Brexit.

Instead, preparations are underway in the U.K. for major disruptions at the border and shortages of food and medicines that will ensue should there be no deal. Whitehall officials told the Times this week that Cabinet Office Minister Michael Gove spends most of his time preparing for a no-deal departure.

In Brussels, the European Commission has prepared its contingency planning to prevent a cliff-edge scenario in case no deal is agreed, POLITICO reported earlier this week. Barnier also discussed the “readiness” of countries for the end of the transition period with capitals this week.

“Brussels’ pessimism over the talks is now sinking in all over Europe,” the EU official said.

“My focus right now is getting something done,” he added.

The Buttigieg campaign pointed The Hill to the mayor’s plan for addressing gun violence when asked for comment. In it, he endorses universal background checks, “red flag” laws, and banning the sale of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.

Buttigieg has previously expressed support for focusing on other measures when asked about gun buybacks by a CBS News reporter.

“I continue to believe that our focus right now should be universal background checks, red flag laws and a ban on the sale of assault weapons,” he said. “Because we can get this done now.”

Buttigieg, Booker and O’Rourke are all expected to take the debate stage alongside nine others on Tuesday night.

Lampard could be sacked if Chelsea finish third, says ex-player

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard could be sacked if they fail to challenge for the title, according to former Blues player Tony Cascarino.

They finished fourth in the Premier League during the most recent campaign, behind Liverpool, Man City and Man Utd.

That was Lampard’s first season in charge. The Englishman did well to revitalise the side in the aftermath of their transfer ban and the sale of Eden Hazard.

Lampard has had the full backing of owner Roman Abramovich this summer, however, and has signed numerous big players.

Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, Ben Chilwell, Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr have all joined the club. Bayer Leverkusen wonderkid Kai Havertz is expected to sign in the coming days.

The huge spending spree means expectations will be much higher, according to Cascarino.

Speaking on TalkSport, he said: “Frank will be fully aware that him getting that investment means there’s a different challenge now.

“He will know the expectation won’t just be qualifying for Champions League football. That was the expectation last summer, and if they managed it with a transfer embargo then it’s a bonus.

“But that’s not the challenge now. Now it’s guaranteed top-four, but really they’re giving him the funds to challenge for the top-two.”

Chelsea have been the biggest spenders in the Premier League this summer. Although Silva and Sarr were signed for free, they spent over £130 million on the other three players.

Arsenal, Man Utd and Liverpool have all spent under £20 million so far. Man City and Spurs are the only clubs who have invested in their squads almost as much as the Blues.

Cascarino went on to say: “They lost in the FA Cup final to Arsenal, and Frank would have had a conversation with the powers that be about how they can challenge Man City, Liverpool, Manchester United, Spurs and Arsenal.

“That brings more pressure and Frank will know that, but if he doesn’t reach their expectations and goals then he’s not going to be manager of Chelsea next year.

“If they lose 17 games in a season he won’t be Chelsea manager.”

Chelsea striker Abraham linked with return to Aston Villa

Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham has been reportedly linked with a return to Aston Villa.

Abraham’s place at Stamford Bridge is under threat following the arrival of Timo Werner from RB Leipzig.

Despite scoring 15 goals in his first Premier League campaign, Abraham could lose out on first team opportunities in the upcoming 2020/21 season to Werner.

FEATURE: Most expensive XI signed by promoted Premier League clubs

According to the Daily Mail, Villa want to give the 22-year-old the chance to be a first choice striker in the Prem and have contacted Chelsea officials.

The player was an important part of the club’s promotion from the Championship during the 2018/19 season.

He scored 26 goals in 40 games while on loan and was named in the league’s team of the year before returning to Stamford Bridge.

Villa boss Dean Smith wants Abraham to strengthen his forward line, although they may have to put a convincing offer on the table.

The striker apparently wants to stay at Chelsea next season and fight for his place in the team. In addition to £54 million signing Werner, he will have to contend with Olivier Giroud and Michy Batshuayi for a starting place.

It is unclear whether Villa are offering the player a loan move or a permanent move. However, a loan deal could be on the cards in January if Abraham finds his playing time significantly reduced.

Should the deal for Abraham fail, Villa are in advanced talks to sign Brentford goalscorer Ollie Watkins. The Englishman scored 26 goals in all competitions last campaign and is valued at £25 million.

Brentford’s valuation means the West Midlands side would have to break their transfer record in order to bolster their attacking options.

Their current record is the £22.5 million they paid for Brazilian striker Wesley Moraes. The player suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury back in January and looks set to miss the start of the next season.

Maguire story further contradicted by taxi driver statement

The driver of the minibus that picked up Harry Maguire and his group in Mykonos has contradicted further points of the Manchester United captain’s story.

Maguire has spoken publicly for the first time about the night he was arrested by Greek police and later convicted for repeated bodily harm, attempted bribery, violence against public employees and insult, with those counts later ‘nullified’ and a retrial ordered that could take years to make it to court.

A Greek lawyer tore aspects of Maguire’s story apart in the aftermath, in particular the claim that the centre-half did not realise the minibus that picked him and his party up to take them back to their villa had instead stopped outside a police station.

“I would urge all people to have a look at Mykonos police station,” said Ioannis Paradissis. “It is clearly obvious what this place is either during the day or night.

“There are many police cars parked outside it at night, there is a sign stating that it is a police station and there are officers coming in and outside of the building. The only way you would not be able tell if it was not a police station is if you are very drunk.

“But clearly, he was not that drunk, because according to him he was able to fight off a group of men who he thought were kidnappers and try and escape. If he had the clarity of mind to do that then obviously, he would have also been able to see that the minibus had pulled up outside a police station.”

Xristos Atridis, a driver for the Mykonos Jet Black upmarket concierge company, further contradicted that part of Maguire’s claim in a police statement ‘disclosed to MailOnline‘.

Atridis claims he was late in picking up the group but saw two men who ‘tried to calm things down’ as a row broke out, announcing themselves to be undercover police officers.

An unidentified member of Maguire’s cohort then pushed one of the two officers, which is when more plain clothes policemen arrived and requested that Atridis take everyone to Mykonos police station.

Atridis did so but notes that two passengers then jumped out and tried to escape, adding that ‘he did not see them attacking police officers or being attacked by them’.

Arsenal to open season as televised September games revealed

Eleven out of the 28 Premier League matches confirmed for September will not be available for fans in the UK to view live after the first batch of televised fixtures for the 2020-21 season were announced with Arsenal kicking us off at Fulham.

This season 220 matches will be broadcast live, up from 200 in 2019-20.

However, even though all Premier League matches next month will be played behind closed doors due to the coronavirus pandemic, no arrangement has been put in place similar to the one agreed for the end of last season which meant the final 92 matches were all broadcast live, with 33 of those made available free to air.

Five reasons everyone must watch the Community Shield final

The situation for the new season has been described as “ridiculous” by Football Supporters’ Association chief executive Kevin Miles, whilst various individual club supporters’ groups have voiced their opposition.

The EFL has reached agreement with Sky Sports for all non-televised matches in its divisions to be available via stream while restrictions on stadium capacities remain in place, plus those in the Carabao Cup first round.

Premier League clubs are scheduled to be able to welcome fans back on a socially-distanced basis from the start of October, but grounds are expected to be only operating at around a maximum 30 per cent capacity even at that point.

Seventeen matches will be shown live on Sky Sports or BT Sport in September, starting with the match between newly-promoted Fulham and Arsenal at 12.30pm on Saturday, September 12.

The Cottagers’ first game back in the top flight will be live on BT Sport.

Premier League champions Liverpool will be on Sky Sports later that day, with their match against Sky Bet Championship winners Leeds kicking off at 5.30pm.

Tottenham’s opening two matches, at home to Everton on September 13 and away to Southampton on September 20, will be broadcast live.

West Brom, who finished runners-up to Leeds in the Championship, will also be on TV in their first game.

They will host Leicester on September 13, with the match kicking off at 2pm.

Newcastle and Burnley are the only sides who will not feature in a televised Premier League match in September.
