Belgian forward recalls ‘crazy’ time Liverpool did everything to sign him

Anderlecht forward Jeremy Doku has recalled when Liverpool pulled out all the stops to try and convince him to sign for the Premier League club.

Liverpool have brought in the likes of Sepp van den Berg from PEC Zwolle and Joe Hardy from Brentford over the last year as they have looked to boost their youth ranks off the back of the first team’s success.

Doku has featured 32 times – scoring five goals and contributing four assists – since making his Jupiler Pro League debut in 2018 and looks to have a promising future.

And the 18-year-old has now revealed how Liverpool attempted to bring him to Anfield as he met the likes of Jurgen Klopp, Sadio Mane and Steven Gerrard.

Doku told Sport/Foot: “It was crazy, really. I was only 15. They invited me with my parents. They made me visit everything. The stadium, the training complex, and we were welcomed by the top. Sadio Mané came to talk to me, Jürgen Klopp was interested by me”.

Asked whether it was a tactic to get him to sign, Doku added: “It’s very possible. Conveniently, we went to the training complex when the players were eating. They allowed us in the restaurant and everyone was there. Steven Gerrard took me aside and he showed me videos… of me.

“He had a lot of them. He commented them to me: ‘What you do here, we like that a lot’, and a lot of things like that. If I’d accepted, I’d have had him as my manager with the youth. For a while, with my parents, we spoke about Chelsea. The Liverpool people immediately clocked it, and they thought we were in talks with Chelsea, but no, it’s the name of one of my sisters”.

On why he rejected Liverpool to stay at Anderlecht, he continued: “If I’d accepted their offer, I may have been in the first-team by now, but maybe not. What I know is that I’m now playing with Anderlecht. People from my block told me to go, they told me I might not have another opportunity. I see things differently. If Liverpool want me at 15 and I confirm with the pros, Liverpool will come back later.

“There were other interested clubs. We also visited Arsenal and Ajax. My parents were encouraging me to go. It was my decision to stay. I wasn’t ready. I wanted to continue enjoying myself, to play with my friends”.

Cherries tell Man Utd how much they must pay to land Brooks

Click:Custom Georgia Jerseys

Bournemouth have set their asking price for David Brooks with Man Utd interested in taking the midfielder to Old Trafford, according to reports.

Brooks was hugely impressive in his debut Premier League campaign, notching seven goals and five assists, but managed just nine appearances this season as he could do little to prevent Bournemouth’s slide into the Championship through injury.

Liverpool have also been linked with a £35million move for the Wales international in the past, while the Cherries have already sold Nathan Ake to Manchester City for £41m and Aaron Ramsdale to Sheffield United for £18.5m.

OPINION: Jack Grealish is only almost priceless to Aston Villa…

Sport Witness yesterday claimed that Brooks could follow the duo out of Dean Court as Man Utd have ‘serious’ interest in bringing the 23-year-old to Old Trafford.

And now The Sun inform us that the Cherries have set their asking price for Brooks by telling Man Utd they ‘must cough up a whopping £40m’ for the midfielder.

Apparently, the Red Devils consider Brooks ‘as a viable alternative to top target Jadon Sancho’ with talks reaching an impasse with Dortmund.

United ‘are ready to press ahead with a move’ with Bournemouth owner Maxim Demin ‘willing to sell for the right price’.

Tottenham, Everton and former club Sheffield United – who he left in 2018 for £11.5m – are reportedly interested in a deal for Brooks.

Arsenal fixtures: Mikel Arteta faces make or break October

The Arsenal fixtures have thrown up a tough run. They face five of last season’s top nine over the course of 35 days.

Arsenal have a nightmarish October but a forgiving May as Mikel Arteta prepares for his first full season as manager.

Arteta was appointed last December and crowned a promising opening campaign with victory in the FA Cup final over Chelsea.

They finished eighth in the Premier League after early struggles under Unai Emery, but will hope to make a better start with fixtures against Fulham (a) and West Ham (h) on the first two weekends.

That may provide a necessary head start as Arsenal then face Liverpool (a), Sheffield United (h), Manchester City (a), Leicester (h) and Manchester United (a) from September 26 to October 31 – their Europa League campaign starting somewhere in the middle.

Such a difficult period provides three opportunities for the club to end their 25-game run without a Premier League win away at a fellow Big Six club.

But their last seven games pit them against just one team that finished last season in the top half of the Premier League, with an anomalous visit to Stamford Bridge coming in mid-May.

Chelsea will make the journey to the Emirates on Boxing Day.

There will be a first north London derby of the league campaign at Tottenham on December 5, followed by the return fixture on March 13.

As well as the opening weekend, Arsenal also face the promoted clubs at least once in November, January, February, April and May, a trip to Elland Road scheduled for their ninth match of the season and first against Leeds in the top flight since Thierry Henry scored four goals in a 5-0 win in April 2004.

The Arsenal fixture list is sure to be complicated somewhat by their participation in the Europa League, which they will enter at the group stage in the middle of that tough October run.

Cole: Man Utd transfer plan could hinder ‘scary’ youngster

Man Utd must be careful not to hinder Mason Greenwood’s development if they sign a forward, according to former Red Devils striker Andy Cole.

Greenwood has been a revelation last season after boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer put his faith in the teenager by selling Romelu Lukaku and loaning Alexis Sanchez to Inter Milan last summer.

The 18-year-old has scored 17 goals in all competitions for the first team, becoming a pivotal part of United’s attack alongside Anthony Martial and fellow academy product Marcus Rashford.

MEDIAWATCH: ‘Ruthless’ Ole, Thiago LIVE and more nonsense…

However, following United’s exit from the Europa League there have been reports that Solskjaer is in the market for a striker. Against Copenhagen and Sevilla, Man Utd had 46 shots, 21 of which were on target, but scored just twice – both from the penalty spot, while the speculation regarding a move for Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho has been constant all summer.

Cole, a treble winner with Man Utd in 1999 who scored 121 goals in 275 appearances for the club, is worried a big summer signing could block Greenwood’s progress.

“Mason is scary, absolutely scary,” Cole told the PA news agency. “If this kid lives up to his potential, United have one on their hands.

“It’s scary and long may it continue. He needs to keep doing what he’s doing, scoring goals and putting pressure on those up front, and as he matures and learns the game even more United have a player who could be anything.

“He can play as a nine and he can play out wide of a three, so it will be interesting to see where United think his best position is and what they see him as.

“For me, the best number nine in the world is Robert Lewandowski. But there aren’t many, if any, Lewandowskis about. And if they do bring in Sancho then you’ve got to be careful as you don’t want to block his (Greenwood’s) progress.

“United do need to bring in players as you must improve every season but it’s a fine balance. If you have a player like Mason Greenwood then you can’t afford to block their progress.”

Cole will be returning to Old Trafford next month to take part in Soccer Aid. His participation in the event represents a significant personal milestone following the continuing problems of a kidney transplant in 2017 which the 48-year-old has previously admitted have affected his physical and mental well-being.

“The last five and a bit years have been a sh*t storm and people who know me know this illness has been a real tough ride,” said Cole.

“But I want to prove to myself that I can still have a little run around. I won’t be playing 90 minutes but I just want to prove that I can still do something and that’s my whole aim.

“This illness shouldn’t stop me doing things like this. I don’t know if I’m ready, but I want to give it a go. And that’s me – I’ll give it a go.

“If I played for 15 minutes and came off without any niggles and had a top day and really enjoyed myself and laughed and enjoyed the company of ex-players, if I can do that then I’ve cracked it.”

Testing for Covid-19 for the Soccer Aid match will be overseen by global digital health company Prenetics – the same organisation that has been responsible for the safe return of domestic football in England.

Cole said: “That’s massive for me. If that wasn’t going ahead then I don’t think the game would be going ahead.

“The government gave people like me the go-ahead at the start of the month to start doing a little bit more but, after shielding for so long, there’s still that apprehension in the back of your mind. But life must go on.”

Report details €200m package as Chelsea close in on Havertz

Chelsea are closing in on a deal to sign Kai Havertz with the overall package costing them a huge €200m, according to reports.

Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro admitted on Saturday that Havertz wanted to take the ‘next step’ in his career amid links with Chelsea.

Speaking to German newspaper Kolner Stadt-Anzeiger, Carro said: “It has always been clear that there will be talks once the Europa League is over for us. Still, there is no formal offer yet.

GOSSIP: Man Utd ‘serious’ about Brooks; Chelsea’s Havertz ultimatum

“Kai has told us about his desire to make the next step. Whether that can be materialised soon, I can’t say at the moment.”

Chelsea have been strongly linked with the 21-year-old, who is currently one of the brightest prospects in Europe.

It seems that Havertz is wanting to push through a move to the Premier League in search of both domestic and continental success.

Reports had claimed that Chelsea are yet to make a formal bid as talks continue to focus around the transfer fee.

However, a breakthrough seems to be edging closer as SportBild (via Sport Witness) detail talks after Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia begun ‘official negotiations’ with Leverkusen.

The playmaker’s ‘wish’ is to join Chelsea with Havertz insistent that he makes the transfer ‘as quickly as possible’ in order to ‘get used to the team, the club and the environment in London’.

Chelsea are now in a ‘hot phase’ of negotiations with the overall cost of the package for Havertz set to cost them €200m, with half that amount for wages and half for the transfer fee.

Granovskaia is offering €80m, which is €20m short of Leverkusen’s asking price, and the report claims the difference is set to be made up in instalments and add-ons.

SportBild adds: ‘As a rule, this works with contractually guaranteed special payments that are spread over the next few years.’

Saha ‘gutted’ that Man Utd missed out on one summer signing

Louis Saha is “gutted” that Man Utd have failed to bring Edinson Cavani to Old Trafford this summer, while he recommends that the Premier League club sign Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly.

Cavani is currently in talks to sign for Benfica this summer after leaving Paris Saint-Germain when his contract expired at the end of the French season.

The Uruguayan has been heavily linked with a move to the likes of Man Utd and Leeds but the 33-year-old has confirmed he is in negotiations with “great team” Benfica.

OPINION: Do PSG now have the two best players in the world?

And with time running out for other clubs to pursue a deal, former Red Devils striker Saha reckons Cavani would’ve been “the best fit” for Man Utd this summer.

“I think Manchester United are missing a trick by not signing Edinson Cavani this summer,” Saha told Football Index Podcast. “I’ve followed him for many years and I’m gutted there doesn’t seem to be an interest there.

“For me, Cavani would be the best fit this summer. Cavani has a great eye for goal and his leadership would be a great asset. He has qualities that are very difficult to find on the transfer market.”

On the centre-back positions, Saha added: “I’m a big fan of (Victor) Lindelof. He made a mistake against Sevilla, but otherwise I think he has been very consistent and a good partner for Harry Maguire this season.

“If Manchester United are to look at a new central defender, Koulibaly is the obvious choice. I’m a big fan of his as he’s so strong and composed. He’s also an aerial threat in the opposition box. The more players of his stature at Old Trafford, the better.”

Mourinho ‘personally contacts’ Champo striker over move

Spurs boss Jose Mourinho has made contact with Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson as he looks to seal his third summer signing, according to reports.

Wilson finished as the Cherries’ top scorer this season but to no avail after their relegation back to the Championship.

As such, Bournemouth are likely to sell some of their best players. Indeed, they have already sold defender Nathan Ake to Manchester City for £41million.

FEATURE: The most valuable footballer for every age 16-42

And with Mourinho looking for a back-up striker to support Harry Kane, the Daily Star recently linked Tottenham with a move for Wilson.

The newspaper said that a back-up centre-forward has become the club’s top priority, with Wilson their top target. The four-cap England international has reportedly told Bournemouth that he wants a move away.

Mourinho has brought in Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Joe Hart already this summer and Football Insider now claims that the Portuguese boss has now ‘personally contacted’ Wilson ‘to assess his interest in a move to north London’.

Wilson has scored 41 Premier League goals in 128 matches in the top-flight and the 28-year-old is ‘believed to be open to the possibility of playing second fiddle to Kane’ at Spurs.

The report adds: ‘Spurs chief Daniel Levy will hope to exploit Bournemouth’s relegation by signing Wilson on a relatively cheap deal.’

Lille defender to ‘make Arsenal decision early next week’

Arsenal are waiting on Gabriel Magalhaes to make a decision about his next move having made an offer for the Lille defender.

The 22-year-old has become sought after since the transfer window opened and the PA news agency understands Arsenal have made an official approach to sign the Brazil Under-20 international.

Magalhaes, who has also been linked with the likes of Manchester United and Napoli, looks set to leave Stade Pierre-Mauroy having played in 24 of Lille’s 28 matches in a curtailed 2019-20 Ligue 1 campaign.

It remains to be seen if he will end up at the Emirates Stadium, following the path of Nicolas Pepe who left for the Gunners in a club-record deal last summer, although Lille president Gerard Lopez confirmed at the weekend the defender was expected to depart.

“He is one of the players that we allowed to exit the club this summer, he asked for it and wants to try something else,” Lopez told Sky Sports.

“We clearly told him what our expectations were, we spoke to a number of clubs, our expectations were met by a number of clubs and we have given him the time to decide.

“It is going to be entirely his decision. We tend to try and steer our players in certain directions, but at the end of the day it’s the player’s decision.

“I know he is going to make a decision early next week.”

Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta stressed towards the end of the season that he was keen to add to his defence, mainly due to the number of injuries in that area of the pitch.

Arteta has plenty of options at his disposal with William Saliba now linking up with the first team following a loan spell at St Etienne.

As well as Saliba, Arteta can also call upon David Luiz, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Calum Chambers, Rob Holding, Shkodran Mustafi and Pablo Mari when all are fit and available.

Signing a defender was a priority for Arteta and technical director Edu, as was tying captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang down to a new contract.

The 31-year-old’s current deal expires next summer but it is believed that an agreement has been reached and an extension could be announced later this week.
