Bill de Blasio 2020: The New York mayor who believes he can topple Donald Trump

There is little doubt that Bill de Blasio will stand out in any Democratic candidates debate.

For a start, the 58-year-old mayor of New York City is six feet five inches tall, guaranteeing he will tower over the rest of the field.

It is also safe to assume that none of the other candidates has ever been accused of killing a groundhog.

The unfortunate incident, which has already been used by Mr de Blasio’s opponents, took place at Staten Island Zoo’s Groundhog Day Ceremony in 2014.

Mr de Blasio dropped the animal, which died a few days later. The zoo insisted that New York’s mayor was blameless, but as far as some conservatives are concerned, the blood of the beast is on his hands.

Politically Mr de Blasio can point to his experience running a massive city and he has not been afraid to take on some of its most difficult issues.

He, along with state governor Mario Cuomo, wants New York to follow London’s example and introduce a congestion charge, with the cash being used to modernise the city’s creaking transport system.

The Democrat tribes fighting it out for their party’s 2020 presidential nomination

Henry Garrido, the leader of the City Council’s largest union, praises Mr de Blasio for breaking through the logjam of negotiations left by his predecessor, Mike Bloomberg.

"Now 95 per cent of workers have a collective bargaining agreement. We have mutual respect and he has tackled the issue of thousands of workers who were on below $15 an hour."

Mr de Blasio also plugged a loophole guaranteeing long-term sick leave for thousands of workers who contracted serious diseases when they went into Ground Zero after September 11.

It will bolster his credibility with the progressive wing of the party, along with his stance on income inequality and his friendship with Sadiq Khan, London’s mayor and frequent target of Donald Trump’s Twitter outbursts.

Mr de Blasio’s pitch is that as a New Yorker, he knows how to deal with Donald Trump – or "Con Don" as he calls him.

"I know how to take him on, I have been watching him for decades," he said.

However, the groundhog incident is a microcosm of the mishaps which have dogged Mr de Blasio since becoming the city’s 109th mayor in January 2014.

Mr de Blasio had barely got his feet under the desk before he came under fire for the city’s response to the heaviest snowfall in living memory.

Mr de Blasio also became embroiled in an angry dispute over the carriage horses in Central Park.

His attempts to ban the industry on animal welfare grounds pitted him against the Teamsters’ Union – and Liam Neeson, a strong supporter of the trade.

There have been clashes with the city’s police force, with officers angered by his pledge to stop the city’s stop and search policy.

Relations deteriorated when he delivered a series of speeches accusing the police of institutional racism.

The nadir occurred when officers turned their back on Mr De Blasio as he delivered eulogies for two policemen who had been gunned down in Brooklyn.

Trump's key swing states moved to the Democrats

Mr de Blasio’s announcement that he was running for the White House drew a coruscating response from the New York City Police Benevolent Association’s president, Pat Lynch.

"It is incomprehensible that a mayor who has shown no interest in running New York City now says he wants to mismanage the entire country."

The sniping is threatening to sink Mr de Blasio’s campaign before it even gets started. A recent Quinnipiac poll was hardly encouraging, with 76 per cent of respondents saying he should not run.

Arguably he did himself few favours with the city’s voters by making it clear that his favourite baseball team is the Boston Red Sox, rather than the New York Yankees or New York Mets.

Just to add insult to injury, Mr de Blasio’s favourite pop song is "London Calling" by the Clash.

Mr de Blasio has plenty of critics in New York.

"You have to ask what his lane is and how does he get to be the presidential nominee.

"There is no lane. But then that is what people said about Donald Trump."

Arteta hails four Arsenal stars after landmark Wolves victory

Mikel Arteta has heaped praise on four of his players after Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Wolves on Saturday.

It was the Gunners’ first away victory over a team above them in the Premier League since September 2015.

Bukayo Saka scored a beauty at the end of the first half before Alexandre Lacazette came off the bench to seal the win in the 86th minute.

The victory means Arsenal closed the gap to Wolves in sixth to just three points.

FEATURE: Wolves 0-2 Arsenal: 16 Conclusions

Arteta was keen to highlight the performance of Lacazette, who has been in and out of the team with Eddie Nketiah again starting ahead of the Frenchman at Molineux.

“He really needed that,” Arteta told Arsenal’s official website. “But when I asked him to come in, in three seconds he was ready to jump on the pitch!

“Things like this happen and he had a great movement of the ball, a great touch and a great finish.

“We need to give him more opportunities to be able to do more of that, but I’m so happy for him because he completely deserves that for the way that he trains and plays every day.”

After a disappointing defeat to Brighton in their first game of the resuming season, Arsenal have won each of their last three league games and advanced to the FA Cup semi-finals.

Arteta’s switch to a back three has been pivotal to the improvement, and Arteta praised Mustafi for his performance against Wolves before highlighting the work of midfield pairing Dani Ceballos and Granit Xhaka.

The Spaniard added: “We try to help every player to improve, first of all to feel that we trust them,” he said. “They can make mistakes, of course, but if they are willing and they are happy to try again, I think they will get the rewarded.

“Musti’s [Mustafi’s] attitude, his training, attention levels, the questions he’s asking and how much he wants to help everybody has been really good since I joined. I think it’s a consequence of his performances.

“[Granit] was pivotal today and I think him and Dani dictated the game really, really well for the first 45 minutes. And then when the game plan changed a little bit and we suffered, they read the situation really well and gave the team exactly what they needed.

“They had to manage the game but in times they did it with great maturity and I know [Xhaka’s] character: he’s a great personality and he’s so focused that he deserves to be helped.”

Mount ‘surprised’ by decision, hails two Chelsea stars after Watford win

Mason Mount has admitted to being “surprised” he was awarded the Man of the Match award after Chelsea’s 3-0 victory over Watford on Saturday.

The Blues were back on form following their defeat to West Ham, with Olivier Giroud, Willian and Ross Barkley on target.

The pressure was on after both Leicester City and Manchester United won earlier in the day, but Chelsea brushed Watford aside to regain their place in the top-four.

Mount was good on the day, but was hardly the standout performer, and expressed his own surprise at being given the Man of the Match award after the game.

“I’m quite surprised to be fair. I didn’t think I did that well, I was just trying to keep the ball and keep it ticking over,” he told Sky Sports.

“Ross [Barkley] got a goal and an assist, Olivier Giroud too. It was a brilliant performance, we spoke before the game of needing to have that reaction and show what we can do.

“It was a must win and we did that.

“We took over in the final third, we could have had a couple more.

“But we switched off a couple of times and there is things to work on.”

Arsenal will sell one of three players as huge deal is ‘approved’

Arsenal are ready to bring Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey to the Emirates Stadium but must sell a player first, according to reports.

A report on Monday in Spain claimed that Arsenal ‘will pay the clause’ to bring Partey to the Emirates Stadium with a deal ‘close’ after the Gunners had been previously linked with the 27-year-old.

The Gunners’ engine room is considered an area of relative weakness, with Granit Xhaka and Lucas Torreira often failing to provide adequate cover for a vulnerable defence.

MAILBOX: Arsenal ‘dodginess’ delivered their best display in years…

David Ornstein wrote in The Athletic on Wednesday that Arsenal ‘have intensified their interest in signing’ Partey and ‘will be hopeful of negotiating a lower figure’ than his €50m (£45.6m) release clause.

And now the Daily Mail claims that the Gunners are ‘desperate to raise cash’ to land Partey and will attempt to sell Matteo Guendouzi, Alexandre Lacazette or Lucas Torreira.

Arsenal are ‘confident’ they will land Partey but they ‘are facing huge losses’ and will probably have to sell before they can buy this summer.

The Ghana international is ‘keen to join’ and Mikel Arteta has ‘marked down as a key arrival’ ahead of the summer transfer window and the ‘transfer now has been approved by technical director Edu.’

Spurs boss Mourinho ‘going to break the rules’ against Everton

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho says he will have no problems ditching the elbow-bump in order to hug Carlo Ancelotti on Monday night.

Spurs host Everton in a vital fixture in the race for European qualification which sees two of the elite managers of the last 20 years come head-to-head for the first time in the Premier League.

Mourinho says he “loves” the Italian, who like Mourinho has managed at Chelsea and Real Madrid in an illustrious career, and believes Everton are lucky to have him.

“I think everyone in football admires Carlo as a coach and as a person,” he said. “If you don’t know him as a person, at least you know him as a coach.

“It’s not because I like him so much as a person that I’m going to say the obvious, which is: he’s one of the top managers in the world of the last two decades and of course now.

“I think it’s a privilege for the Premier League to have Carlo back, it’s a privilege for Everton to have Carlo as manager, or head coach, whatever way you want to call him.

“As a manager we all know him, and we don’t need to speak of him, because his office in his house, I don’t know if it’s the house in Milan or London or Liverpool but some office in one of his houses is full of cups so he doesn’t need anyone to speak about Carlo.

“As a person I had the privilege to know him for a few years, to stay and be with him a few times in UEFA meetings in some different occasions and I just love Carlo.

“I think he’s a fantastic guy. I think I’m going to break the rules. Now is one-metre distance. I’m going to break the rules and I’m going to hug him because I like Carlo very much.”

Spurs, who need to win to reignite their Europa League hopes, will check on Dele Alli after he suffered a hamstring injury in training on Saturday.

Weinstein Gets New Indictment As Sopranos Star Hopes To Testify

NEW YORK, NY — Movie mogul Harvey Weinstein pleaded not guilty to a new indictment Monday that includes revised charges of predatory sexual assault, a development that caused the judge to delay the start of his trial until early next year.

The tweak to the case was intended to open the door for an actress to testify against Weinstein in a rape and sexual assault trial that had been scheduled to start on Sept. 9.

Weinstein was in and out of a Manhattan courthouse quickly to enter the plea. He didn’t speak with reporters.

After the hearing, his lawyers said they would ask the judge to dismiss the indictment, which they called a “desperate” attempt to salvage the case.

“I think the case itself is weak,” said his lawyer Donna Rotunno.

Weinstein previously pleaded not guilty to charges accusing him of raping a woman in 2013 and performing a forcible sex act on a different woman in 2006.

Prosecutors brought the new predatory assault indictment because it was needed to bring evidence involving Annabella Sciorra, best known for her work on “The Sopranos.” She says Weinstein raped her inside her Manhattan apartment after she starred in a film for his movie studio in 1993.

Sciorra isn’t being added as a victim in the case because the alleged attack took place too long ago to be prosecuted under state law, but prosecutors want to use her testimony to prove that Weinstein had a pattern of assaulting woman. That’s necessary to prove the charge of predatory sexual assault.

Sciorra’s lawyer, Gloria Allred, said she was willing to tell her story to bring Weinstein to justice. She criticized the defense team for saying they would try to get her testimony barred.

“Why are they so afraid of having additional witnesses testify?” she said.

Weinstein, 67, who’s free on $1 million bail, has denied all accusations of non-consensual sex.
Prosecutors can’t charge Weinstein with the alleged attack on Sciorra because the accusation dates to 13 years before New York eliminated its statute of limitations for rape cases in 2006.

But in court papers filed this month, they told the judge the indictment will give them a legal foundation to call the actress as a witness to strengthen the predatory sexual assault charge against Weinstein.

Sciorra went public with her story in a story in The New Yorker in October 2017.
