Seattle crane collapse kills four and injures 3 as cars crushed

Four people were killed and three injured when a construction crane collapsed on Saturday in downtown Seattle, pinning six cars underneath.

The four were dead by the time firefighters got to the scene, Seattle Fire Chief Harold Scoggins said. He said two of the dead were crane operators and the other two were people who had been in cars.

Three people – including a mother and her baby – were transported to the hospital, Mr Scoggins said. A fourth person was injured but treated at the scene.

The crane collapsed near the intersection of Mercer Street and Fairview Avenue near Interstate 5 shortly before 3:30 p.m., Mr Scoggins said.

He said officials did not yet know the cause of the collapse, which happened on a busy street.

"My thoughts and prayers are with those killed and injured," Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan said on Twitter.

The crane was atop an office building under construction in a densely populated area.

"It was terrifying," witness Esther Nelson, a biotech researcher who was working in a building nearby, told The Seattle Times .

"The wind was blowing really strong," she said, and added that the crane appeared to break in half.

With Amazon and other tech companies increasing their hiring in Seattle, the city has dozens of construction cranes building office towers and apartment buildings. As of January, there were about 60 construction cranes in Seattle, more than any other American city.

Mr Scoggins said the injured included a mother and child, and all the injured were taken to Harborview Medical Center.

A 28-year-old man, a 25-year-old mother and her baby were being evaluated for their injuries, said Susan Gregg, a spokeswoman for Harborview. None of their injuries are life threatening, she said.

Assistant Police Chief of Patrol Operations Eric Greening said all lanes may be closed until Sunday night.

Demonstrator killed and dozens injured in Venezuela clashes as opposition protests fizzle out

Venezuela’s military was thanked by president Nicolas Maduro for resisting calls to rise up against his regime on Thursday after days of violent clashes.

In a show of defiance and strength, Mr Maduro took part in an early morning parade alongside what his administration said were 4,500 military personnel.

"Yes, we are in combat, keep morale high in this fight to disarm any traitor, any coup plotter," Mr Maduro said at the televised event on Thursday.

Pictures showed Mr Maduro, 56, waving in a cap and jacket surrounded by soldiers in uniform at a military base in Caracas, the Venezuelan capital.

State television reportedly called the parade a “march to reaffirm the absolute loyalty of the armed forces”. Mr Maduro’s address was also posted on social media.

Both Vladimir Padrino, the defence minister, and Remigio Ceballos, the military operations chief, flanked Mr Maduro during the dawn address.

The message was an attempt to reassert control after 48 hours which saw calls for a military uprising, protests marred in violence and speculation that senior figures could defect.

Juan Guaido, the 35-year-old national assembly leader who declared himself interim president in January, had issued his own social media video surrounded by soldiers on Tuesday morning.

That dramatic message had called for the nation’s military to rise up against Mr Maduro, who he argues has usurped power on the back of an illegitimate election.

On Tuesday and Wednesday violent scenes played out across the country as thousands of supporters of Mr Guaido took to the streets in support for his claim.

Security forces who remained loyal to Mr Maduro used tear gas, water cannons and, according to reports on the ground, live fire at times to keep the crowds in control.

Human rights organisations and health services reported 46 people injured in Wednesday’s clashes, including one person with a gunshot wound.

Jurubith Rausseo, 27, died after being hit by a "bullet in the head”, according to the non-governmental Venezuelan Observatory of Social Conflict.

One person was killed and dozens injured in Tuesday’s clashes, human rights monitors also said. The government said more than 150 people were arrested.

Mr Guaido expressed optimism about claiming power during an interview with the Fox Business Network despite Mr Maduro being still in place as the week nears its end.

“As long as we are mobilised and united, we are very close to achieving our freedom,” he said. “Can’t tell you a specific date or time. Working on transition. Democracy has always taken time.”

Malawi man who killed albino to ‘get rich’ sentenced to death

A judge in Malawi has sentenced the murderer of an albino teenager to death, saying the unprecedented penalty could help end a spree of similar killings linked to the country’s general election.

Willard Mikaele was told he would hang for the strangling and ritualistic dismemberment of Mphatso Pensulo, who was 19 when he was lured into his killer’s house with a promise of juice and biscuits in 2017.

Pensulo’s murder was one of at least 25 documented killings of albinos since 2014, a spree that has spread terror through Malawi’s 10,000-strong community and raised troubling questions about the country’s political culture.

Albinos, who suffer from a genetic condition that bleaches the skin, eyes and hair white, have long been the victims of a widely held superstition that their bones and innards contain magical properties which bring luck and material wealth.

But albino-rights activists believe that the trade in albino body parts is driven by politicians, who are among the few who can afford the thousands of dollars involved it takes to pay off hitmen and witchdoctors.

A surge in killings was noted before Malawi’s last election in 2014, with another reported in recent months as the country again goes to the polls a fortnight on Tuesday. Politicians themselves privately admit the practice takes place, saying their colleagues use charms made of albino remains in the belief it will help them win their seats.

There is no indication that Mr Pensulo’s killing was linked to politicians. His murderer was a rich businessman who had been told by a medicine man that killing an albino was a path “to get rich fast”, Justice Maclean Kamwambe said.

The death penalty is rare — and has not been carried out since 1994 — but Justice Kamwambe said it was merited in order to protect the country’s albino minority.

“There will be times when the death sentence shall be unavoidable due to the circumstances and it should be reserved for such occasions,” he told the court.

The Association for People with Albinism in Malawi, the country’s leading albino activist group, did not comment on the ruling, but it has previously said that albinos will only be safe if the real masterminds behind the killings are identified and convicted.

India’s Narendra Modi on track for a second term as PM, exit polls predict

India’s prime minister Narendra Modi look set to retain power at the head of a coalition government last night, after exit polls showed his Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies were on track to win a majority of seats in India’s parliament.

With polls showing the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance will win as many as 306 seats in India’s 543-seat lower house, the controversial Hindu-nationalist leader would secure a second five-year term, though with a slimmer mandate than in 2014.

The opposition Congress-led United Progressive Alliance coalition, which sunk to historic lows last time out, were predicted to win an estimated 132 seats – but a Congress spokesman dismissed the exit polls as “laughable”, citing the shyness of voters in such a polarised contest.

The exit polls, which have proved wildly unreliable in the past, were released yesterday evening after the last of India’s 900 million registered voters had cast their ballots. The counted result is due on Thursday.

The six week campaign has been largely peaceful, though ended with violent clashes on the outskirts of Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal where the BJP have been skirmishing with the regional Trinamool Congress party.

The projected result emerged as Mr Modi attracted attracted ire and bemusement yesterday after donning saffron robes to meditate in a Himalayan cave, in a bid to garner voters at the end of the campaign.

In pictures released by his party press machine, the PM is seen wearing the orange garments synonymous with Hindu priests and sitting cross-legged in a cave near the Kedarnath shrine, in the northern state of Uttarakhand.

A master of the grand political gesture, Mr Modi and his aides tweeted the photos, hoping they would strike a chord with his austere, religious supporters.

Indian elections 2019 – Projected seat share

However, as violence continued in West Bengal and people were voting in Mr Modi’s own constituency of Varanasi, the holy city on the River Ganges, the pictures were mocked online.

“No meditation is complete or meaningful without the right attire, red carpet and of course a stage managed photo opportunity,” wrote Rupa Subramanya prominent economist and a former BJP supporter turned critic.

Other observers and much of the Indian media turned their attention to the caves themselves – which are actually in a man-made retreat.

They can be booked online for Rs 990 (£11.20) a day and the facilities include electricity, drinking water, and “morning tea, breakfast, lunch, evening tea and dinner at prescribed timing which can be changed upon request”, reported the Hindustan Times.

The cave also has a telephone connection and an attendant who can be summoned with a bell, the newspaper added.

Click Here: cheap all stars rugby jersey

New York Fashion Week shortened to three days

The upcoming September edition of New York Fashion Week has been
shortened to three days.

The Council of Fashion Designers (CFDA) told members in a note, seen by
WWD, that the official dates will now be from 14 – 16 September, as opposed
to 11 – 16 September as listed on the website. The CFDA said that if there
is enough demand, the event could be extended until 17 September.

It comes as fashion shows face huge disruption from the Covid-19
pandemic, with organisers scrambling to launch digital iterations of
traditionally physical events.

and have already showcased their first
digital fashion weeks, while Paris Haute Couture Week kicked off
on Monday.

“[W]e can fit the same amount of shows into three days because of no
need for travel time in between the shows,” Mark Beckham, vice president of
marketing and events for CFDA, told WWD. “The three days of shows is only
for this season as a result of Covid-19.” He also acknowledged that the financial
impact of the pandemic could cause some designers to skip the season.

Michael Kors already said he wouldn’t be showing his spring/summer 2021 collections
in September as he joins a growing number of luxury labels such as Gucci and Saint
Laurent to announce plans to move away from the traditional fashion calendar.

“I have for a long time thought that the fashion calendar needs to change,” Kors
said in a statement last month. “It’s exciting for me to see the open dialogue within the
fashion community about the calendar – from Giorgio Armani to Dries Van Noten to Gucci
to YSL to major retailers around the globe – about ways in which we can slow down the
process and improve the way we work. We’ve all had time to reflect and analyze things,
and I think many agree that it’s time for a new approach for a new era.”

Yanis Varoufakis’ star power wanes as his populist movement appears… unpopular

In front of a small crowd of around a hundred supporters and a few bemused German commuters, Yanis Varoufakis tried to start a revolution in European politics.

Greece’s former “rock-star” finance minister is making an unlikely comeback — as a candidate for the European elections in Germany.

The one-time scourge of Germany, who once described Angela Merkel’s handling of the Greek financial crisis as “terrorism”, is trying to persuade German voters to elect him as their MEP.

“Maybe I’ll stand as a candidate in the UK next. I think I still have British nationality,” he told the Telegraph on the sidelines of an election rally in Hanover on Friday night, before breaking into a familiar wolfish grin…

Austrian region issues ‘Ten commandments for asylum-seekers’

An Austrian region is to require all asylum-seekers to sign up to its own version of the ten commandments.

Asylum-seekers resident in Lower Austria will be obliged to sign a document prepared by the regional government entitled the “Ten Commandments of Immigration”.

As well as commitments to learn German and respect Austrian values, it includes a “commandment” that asylum-seekers should “live in gratitude to Austria” for taking them in.

The document is an initiative of the far-Right Freedom Party (FPÖ). It was drawn up on the orders of Gottfried Waldhäusl, regional asylum minister in the coalition government of Lower Austria, the second most populous Austrian state.

Mr Waldhäusl told a press conference on Monday his “commandments” would help asylum-seekers integrate into Austrian society, but political opponents have condemned them as deliberately provocative.

The “commandments” include that asylum-seekers must educate their children according to Austrian values, respect religious freedom and avoid inflicting unnecessary suffering on animals.

But it is the document’s tenth commandment, which states that asylum-seekers must “live in gratitude to Austria”, that has generated most controversy.

“It’s common sense. We give these people protection and everything they need, and we also expect a certain amount of gratitude,” Mr Waldhäusl said on Monday.

He said there would be no enforcement of the ten commandments, and no penalties for non-compliance.

Political rivals dismissed the scheme as a publicity stunt. “Every asylum-seeker already receives comprehensive documents on rights and obligations,” said Bernhard Ebner, a regional politician from the Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP) of chancellor Sebastian Kurz.

“The ten commandments for immigrants have the sole purpose of distracting from the chaos and criminal investigations surrounding Mr Waldhäusl’s office, because there are already value courses and an integration agreement,” said Indra Collini of the oppositions Neos party.

All asylum-seekers in Austria are already required to sign a declaration that they will integrate in society, and to attend courses in the German language and Austrian values.

It is not the first time Mr Waldhäusl has been involved in controversy. Last year he came under fire when he called for “special treatment” for uncooperative asylum-seekers — a term that was used as a Nazi euphemism for political murder.

His office is currently under investigation by Austrian prosecutors on suspicion of corruption.
