Egypt discovers 4,400-year-old tomb near the country’s famed pyramids

Archaeologists in Egypt have discovered a 4,400-year-old tomb near the country’s famed pyramids at the Giza plateau just outside Cairo, the Antiquities Ministry said Saturday, the latest discovery that authorities hope will help revive the country’s staggering tourism sector.

The tomb was found in a wider area of Giza’s western necropolis, which is known to be home to tombs from the Old Kingdom.

It likely belonged to a woman known as Hetpet, who archaeologists believe was close to ancient Egyptian royals of the 5th Dynasty.

The tomb, unveiled to the media on Saturday, is made of mud brick and includes wall paintings in good condition depicting Hetpet observing different hunting and fishing scenes.

Other scenes also depict a monkey – in pharaonic times, monkeys were commonly kept as domestic animals – picking fruit. Similar scenes have been found in other tombs belonging to the later 12th dynasty, according to the ministry’s statement. Another scene shows a monkey dancing before an orchestra.

According to the ministry, the archaeological mission behind the discovery started excavation work last October. Archaeologists have been making discoveries near the site since the 19th century, and Mostafa al-Waziri, who led the mission, believes there is still more to be found.

"This is a very promising area. We expect to find more," Al-Waziri told reporters at the site. "We have removed between 250-300 cubic meters of layers of earth to find the tomb."

"What we see above the earth’s surface in Egypt doesn’t exceed 40 percent of what the core holds," he added.

Al-Waziri believes Hetpet had another tomb in Giza’s western necropolis and said that excavation work is underway to find that one too.

Hetpet is a previously known figure in Egyptian antiquity though her mummy has not been discovered yet. Fragments of artefacts belonging to Hetpet were found in the same area back in 1909, and were moved to a museum in Berlin at the time, Antiquities Minister Khaled al-Anani said Saturday, speaking at the site to reporters and Western diplomats.

Despite all the discoveries already made about ancient Egypt, experts say they hope to find much more – in part thanks to modern technology – treasures still buried under the vast desert.

The area of the latest discovery is close to a new museum under construction that will house some of Egypt’s most unique and precious artifacts, including many belonging to the famed boy King Tutankhamun.

The first phase of Grand Egyptian museum is expected to be opened later this year while the grand opening is planned for 2022.

In January, Egypt placed the ancient statue of one of its most famous pharaohs, Ramses II at the museum’s atrium, which will include 43 massive statues.

Throughout 2017, the Antiquities Ministry made a string of discoveries across Egypt – including some in the southern city Luxor known for its spectacular temples and tombs spanning different dynasties of ancient Egyptian history.

Egypt hopes the inauguration of the new museum, along with the recent discoveries, will draw back visitors to the country where tourism has been hit hard by extremist attacks and political turmoil following the 2011 popular uprising that toppled longtime autocrat Hosni Mubarak and the authorities’ struggles to rein in an insurgency by Islamic militants.

The government has tightened security around archaeological and touristic sites and spent millions of dollars to upgrade airport security especially following the 2015 downing of a Russian airliner by the Islamic State group, killing 224 people on board.

The bombing dealt Egypt’s vital tourism sector a hard blow after Russia suspended flights to and from Egypt.

In December, Cairo and Moscow signed a security protocol and announced plans to resume Russian flights to the Egyptian capital, due to start this month.

Super Bowl fans riot and smash shops during celebrations in Philadelphia

Philadelphia was hit with rioting and looting on Sunday night after the city’s fans celebrated a historic Super Bowl win.

Thousands of fans took to the streets to celebrate the Philadelphia Eagles, the underdogs of the tournament, beating long-running champions the New England Patriots 41-33.

But the scenes of joy quickly turned to chaos and led to cars and shop fronts being destroyed or looted and at least one police officer being injured.

As the celebrations took an ugly turn locals were seen brawling, damaging cars, jumping off roofs, attempting to tear down traffic lights and street signs and even scaling the City Hall gates.

A number of convenience stores reported looting and damage, as well as at the department store chain Macy’s, where windows were smashed.

There were also unconfirmed reports of two police horses being stolen and later recovered.

Rowdy fans clambered on top of the awning at the upmarket Ritz Carlton Hotel, jumping off into the crowd. The awning could be seen collapsing later with a large group of people on top of it. It is not clear if anyone was injured.

Local authorities were overwhelmed by the level of rioting as around 100,000 fans filled the streets, and local police forces were forced to seek additional support from other forces and agencies such as the Marine units and the National Guard.

Almost 10,000 tuned into the local public police radio, Philadelphia Police Scanner, which was filled with news of the destruction. The hashtag  #phillypolicescanner was also trending nationally on Twitter.

One officer was heard saying on the police scanner: "It’s endless, chief. Endless."

Philadelphia officials confirmed they were aware of several acts of vandalism, including smashed windows and a gas station being looted, but said just three arrests were made.

A city spokeswoman said that a number of injuries were also reported after fans attempted to pull down light poles.

She added that other than a "handful of bad actors" the celebrations were peaceful.

Disorderly fans were not just found in the Philadelphia area. Mourning their loss, Patriots fans at the University of Massachusetts Amherst were arrested for brawling.

Twelve people were taken to hospital and six people were arrested during a disturbance at the university.

A university spokesman said about 2,000 people gathered outdoors following Sunday night’s game.

Campus police said fights broke out, the crowd threw objects and set off smoke bombs and firecrackers. Police were forced to use pepper balls to disperse the crowd and the area was cleared by 11:30 p.m.

Those transported to hospitals suffered from head injuries, lacerations and alcohol intoxication.

Officers said those arrested face criminal charges, and if they are students they face punishment under the student code of conduct.

Italy’s election campaign turns toxic as small town shootings highlight growing migrant tensions

Dressed in black bomber jackets and black T-shirts, the fascists surged into a main piazza ringed by colonnaded palazzos and pavement cafes. Confronting them were dozens of riot police armed with batons and shields.

Scuffles broke out as the modern-day Italian Blackshirts, from a far-Right party called Forza Nuova (New Force), tried to push their way further into the town. But the police forced them back, shoving them with their shields as the demonstrators chanted slogans from the time of Mussolini and gave stiff-armed salutes.

The confrontation happened in Macerata, a quiet provincial town tucked away in the hills of the eastern Marche region, touted by property agents and travel supplements…

Catalan carnival children dress up as baton-wielding Spanish police

A Catalan carnival float has drawn criticism for depicting children as baton-wielding Spanish police, as tensions surrounding the independence crisis burst into this year’s parades.

The float, styled as the much-mocked cruise ship on which Spanish police were deployed to Catalonia in October, drew cheers of delight from many onlookers as it rolled through the town of Torrelles de Llobregat.

But critics seized on the float – manned by around a dozen children in full riot gear and bedecked with the independence flag – as another example of what they say is rampant political indoctrination in Catalonia.

The Societat Civil Catalana, a Catalan anti-independence group, denounced the float as “unbelievable”, while others complained secessionists were “using” children for political purposes.

AEB Catalunya, an organisation campaigning against the predominance of Catalan language in schools, suggested an “adult indoctrinator” was behind the float.

“Our association is against using children for political ends and in the case of the Torrelles float it is evident that a child did not come up with this themselves,” Ana Losada, a spokesperson for the group, told The Telegraph.

She said that while political satire in Carnival was nothing new, there was not a single float in the parade which had taken on the independence movement, a fact which she claimed demonstrated a lack of freedom of expression in the current political climate.

Carnival was always an opportunity to “see the reality with humour”, Ms Losada said, but this year was reflecting the “undoubtable” social fracture in Catalonia and the emboldenment of secessionists, “who feel more free to mock everything that is related with Spain”.

Such incidents often took place with the support of local institutions led by nationalists, she claimed.

In the town of Ripoll, a float featuring semi-naked models of Ines Arrimadas, the Catalan leader of pro-union party Ciudadanos, and Soraya Saenz de Santamaria, the Spanish deputy prime minister who is governing Catalonia under direct rule, stirred ire among opponents of secession.

The scene, in which the two female politicians were portrayed wearing nothing but aprons and witches’ hats and with the pair in a sexual position, was denounced by unionists as obscene.

El Catalan, an anti-independence news site, fumed that “secessionism is grazing levels of moral baseness difficult to surpass in future, when one day you think they can’t go any further, the next they do it again”.

With Catalan politics at an impasse over Carles Puigdemont’s bid to return to the presidency and Madrid maintaining direct rule under Article 155, frustrations are taking form in some inventive ways.

Pro-independence Catalans have shrugged off complaints about such floats, accusing critics of hypocrisy at a time when anti-secessionist parodies are proliferating elsewhere in Spain.

Arsenal offer trouble maker in swap deal for key midfield target

Arsenal’s latest offer for Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey has been rejected by Atletico Madrid, according to reports from Get French Football News.

The London club are thought to have offered €25 million plus Matteo Guendouzi in exchange for Partey, who has also attracted interest from Manchester United.

The offer is Arsenal’s second in recent weeks. They previously offered Atletico €25 million for the midfielder but had to come back with a revised proposal after the Spanish club swiftly rejected the deal.

Atletico are not keen to let their player go on the cheap and are holding out for the right price.

Guendouzi, meanwhile, has been a bit-part player at the Emirates since the restart and could have played his last game for the Gunners.

Despite showing impressive potential, Guendouzi was sidelined following his behaviour in the 2-1 loss against Brighton back in June.

The Arsenal player supposedly taunted opponents about the wage difference between them before putting his hands around Neal Maupay’s neck at full-time.

Following his fallout with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, the Frenchman revealed that he wants to leave the Emirates. La Liga giants Barcelona and Real Madrid are both thought to be interested.

Partey has been a dominant force in the Spanish club’s midfield since breaking into the first team in 2015.

He’s scored four goals in 46 games for the club this season and is expected to line up for their Champions League quarter-final against RB Leipzig next month.

Now aged 27, his contract expires in 2023 and has a release clause of €50 million (£44.5 million), which Arsenal are refusing to meet.

Partey’s teammate Kieran Trippier recently fuelled transfer rumours by stating that the Ghanaian would ‘fit in perfectly’ with the style of the Premier League.

Bournemouth may struggle to win potential Hawkeye court case

Bournemouth might struggle to win a potential legal case against Hawkeye, following their relegation from the Premier League, according to a report in iNews.

The Cherries will play in the Championship next season after a disappointing campaign under Eddie Howe.

They were also on the receiving end of a controversial fault in the Hawkeye system back in June, albeit indirectly, which gave Aston Villa the point they needed to stay in the Premier League.

FEATURE: The prestigious Football365 end-of-season awards

Sheffield United’s ‘ghost goal’ was not given against Villa, even though the ball clearly crossed the line. The teams went on to draw 0-0, with everyone at Sheffield United and Bournemouth rightfully aggravated about such an error.

Here’s how Sheffield United’s official Twitter responded:

Bournemouth are yet to mount a case against the Premier League or Hawkeye. Talks are expected to begin in the coming days.

However, rules surrounding the system may prevent Bournemouth from being successful.

Laws put in place by the International Football Association Board (IFAB) on the topic of Hawkeye and ‘Match Validity’ state: ‘In principle, a match is not invalidated because of malfunction of the VAR technology (as for goal-line technology)’.

This means that matches affected by VAR or Hawkeye failures cannot be scrapped, with their results allowed to stand.

This would be a huge blow for Bournemouth as it would render the 0-0 draw as valid.

The club has had an honeymoon spell in the top-flight since their first appearance in the 2015-16 season.

They finished ninth in just their second season back in the Prem, surprising opponents with their fluent footballing philosophy.

Howe, the architect of that philosophy, is now uncertain about his future at the club after admitting that he has ‘not been good enough’ this season.

Bournemouth finished in 18th place with 34 points after a low-scoring season from forwards Callum Wilson, Dominic Solanke and Josh King.

Their fans will still be hoping for a court case similar to Sheffield United’s following the Carlos Tevez saga, where the South Yorkshire club received £20 million in compensation from West Ham.

Cherries fans will see money as far less important than playing in the Premier League. But a significant compensation pay-out could help to soften the blow and encourage an immediate return to the top flight.

Fernandes strongly defends Man Utd team-mate after heavy criticism

Bruno Fernandes has come to the defence of Man Utd team-mate Jesse Lingard after the winger scored in their 2-0 victory over Leicester City on Sunday.

A second-half Fernandes penalty and Lingard’s late goal – after Kasper Schmeichel’s howler – secured the win as Man Utd rejoined Europe’s elite after a one-year absence.

United continued their resurgence under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as they clinched third in the Premier League ahead of Chelsea.

Lingard has found opportunities tough to come by at Old Trafford this season with his form on the decline for months and he gave an honest interview on Friday that explained how “family issues” have affected his performances on the pitch.

And Fernandes says Lingard deserved his goal against Leicester on Sunday as he’s been working hard in training in an effort to help his team.

Fernandes told MUTV: “Of course it’s a mistake from the keeper also but if Jesse doesn’t go there the goal doesn’t come so it’s for this we work.

“For me Jesse deserved this goal because of what he works for all week, for all the comments everyone is saying about him and other players because they don’t play too much or they don’t play good enough.

“I think this is the reason Jesse scored because we’re training hard, training hard to help all the team.”

Speaking about his own goal record, Fernandes added: “I think the most important one will be the next.

“I’m always thinking about the next one. I’m happy, all goals are important in different ways.”

Klopp: Breakfast with Ferguson ‘was like meeting the Pope’

Jurgen Klopp has been named the League Managers’ Association manager of the year after guiding Liverpool to the Premier League title.

The Reds ended a 30-year wait for top-flight glory in a season that also saw them crowned world champions following on from last year’s Champions League success.

The award was announced by ex-Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, after whom the trophy is now named.

FEATURE: Top ten Premier League players of the season

“Jurgen, fantastic,” Ferguson said on Sky Sports. “We speak about Leeds spending 16 years in the Championship, but Liverpool 30 years since winning that league, incredible.

“You thoroughly deserved it. The performance level of your team was outstanding. Your personality runs right throughout the whole club. It was a marvellous performance.

“I’ll forgive you for waking me up at 3.30am to tell me you have won the league! Thank you, but anyway, you thoroughly deserved it. Well done.”

Klopp declared himself “absolutely delighted” to get the award, which he dedicated to his staff.

And the 53-year-old said he was honoured to be handed a trophy named in honour of Ferguson.

“I know it’s not 100 per cent appropriate as a Liverpool manager but I admire him,” he said. “I remember he was the first British manager I met.

“We had breakfast. I’m not sure how much he remembers but I remember because for me this moment was like meeting the Pope. It was absolutely great and from that first season we clicked.

“I didn’t think at this moment I would have a trophy in my hands named after him.”

Last year’s winner Chris Wilder had to settle for the runner-up spot this time around after narrowly missing out on Europe in a remarkable return to the Premier League for Sheffield United.

Also short-listed were Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth and Leeds’ Marcelo Bielsa, who was named Championship manager of the year after earning the title.

Coventry boss Mark Robins took the League One award and Crewe’s David Artell was named League Two manager of the year.

Emma Hayes was named Barclays FA Women’s Super League manager of the year after leading Chelsea to a league and Continental Tyres League Cup double, while Aston Villa’s Gemma Davies took the FA Women’s Championship award after a curtailed campaign.

The Premier League manager of the year will be awarded separately next month.

USA Today/NWCA/AWN Division I Coaches Poll

After a strong fifth-place finish at the Virginia Duals, Chattanooga moved into the USA Today/NWCA/AWN Division I Coaches Poll for the first time this season. The Mocs (10-5) lone loss at the Virginia Duals was to eventual champion Virgina. The Mocs are the first Southern Conference team to be ranked this season.
