Arteta claims Arsenal hard done by after clocking up ‘crazy minutes’

Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta has bemoaned the fixture scheduling since the Premier League restart, admitting his players have amassed “crazy minutes” on the pitch in recent weeks.

The Gunners host new Premier League champions Liverpool on Wednesday night, three days after falling to defeat to Tottenham in the north London derby.

Arteta has just three days to lift his squad and prepare them for the next challenge as hopes of European qualification continue to dwindle, with Liverpool having an extra day’s rest having drawn with Burnley on Saturday.

BREAKING: Man Utd do NOT agree Jadon Sancho fee

The perceived lack of preparation time follows a pattern which has seen Arsenal benefit from scheduling only once since the season resumed – and that was ahead of the Spurs loss.

In the five games that followed their opening game of Project Restart – a 3-0 defeat at Manchester City – Arsenal’s opponents had longer to prepare – with Arteta keen to stress that point.

“We have only had an advantage in one – which was against Spurs,” he said.

“The rest, all the teams had at least 24, 36 or 48 hours more than us.

“But look at the boys, they keep going, they go full-gas, it doesn’t matter and we will do it again. We are not going to change it if the fixtures are already there. So we will keep going and try our best.”

An FA Cup semi-final against City is next up for Arsenal after the Liverpool clash – with Arteta keen to be able to field his strongest side in both games, despite the demands placed on his players recently.

“Today and tomorrow we will asses the players and how they are,” he added.

“Obviously they’ve been hit and a lot of them have played some crazy minutes up until now and again we’re going to have games every two and a half days.

“You can see that recovery-wise with the schedule that we have been given by the Premier League, to play every two and a half days, but we will asses them today and tomorrow and put the players on the pitch who are in the best possible condition to compete and try to win the game again.

“We will try to put the strongest team out as possible here and as well on Saturday, and to do that we need to know how everyone recovers from the game.”

Arsenal will still be without suspended striker Eddie Nketiah while Mesut Ozil is missing with a continued back issue.

Spurs star claims Mourinho ‘more tactical’ in Poch comparison

Ben Davies has picked out the differences in the management styles of Jose Mourinho and Mauricio Pochettino.

Despite reaching the Champions League final last season, Pochettino was sacked in November after a poor start to the season.

Mourinho replaced him and has had mixed success at the helm, improving the defence but struggling to find fluency at the other end of the pitch.

Davies was in and out of the team under Pochettino but has been a regular starter under the new boss, and has pinpointed the key differences between the two.

“Under Poch we very much had our style of play and it was just the high press, high intensity,” Davies told talkSPORT.

“Now I think we’re a bit more tactical, we’re a bit more aware of what we’re coming up against.

“We have a game plan for each game.

“In some games it hasn’t been what we’ve wanted but everyone is buying into the skill set that Mourinho has and we all know that he’s a top manager.

“He’s won everything there is to win so us as players have got to put our trust into him and the results will follow.

“We’ll go away in the summer and I’m sure we’ll do a lot of work in pre-season, get ready for it and next year has to be a different story.”

Claims Bruce left out Longstaff over contract situation ‘not true’

Newcastle head coach Steve Bruce has dismissed claims he is not picking midfielder Matty Longstaff because the midfielder is stalling on a new contract.

The 20-year-old signed a short-term extension last month to allow him to see out the elongated season following the expiry of his existing deal on June 30, but he has played for a total of just 35 minutes in two appearances since the return from lockdown.

Longstaff, who memorably marked his Premier League debut with the winning goal against Manchester United in October, did not even make it off the bench in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Watford.

Bruce played Switzerland international defender Fabian Schar in midfield at Vicarage Road, prompting suggestions that Longstaff was being frozen out.

However, asked about the situation at his pre-match press conference ahead of Wednesday night’s clash with Tottenham at St James’ Park, Bruce said: “Take the contract aside, I played Fabian Schar because of his physicality.

“That’s why I’ve played Fab in there. He’s played in that position for his country, who are eighth in the world. This debate that I’m not putting Matty in the team simply because of his contract, it’s not true.

“We’d all like Matty to stay and get things resolved, but the ball is in his court. But I’m certainly not picking a team with that in mind. I picked a team at Watford I thought could win the game.”

Newcastle have offered a new contract to academy graduate Longstaff but he is yet to sign it amid interest from Serie A Udinese among others.

Fellow Geordie Bruce, who elevated the youngster to the first-team picture after being impressed by him during a pre-season trip to China, is convinced remaining on Tyneside is the player’s best option and is desperate to keep him.

He said: “I gave the kid his debut. He had a thigh injury, unfortunately, when he came back from lockdown, which was a pretty severe one. I’ve treated him the way it should be.

“We’ve made him a huge offer, it’s up to the boy to commit himself. I’m not not picking him because he hasn’t signed a contract. We think a lot of Matty and the ball is in his court.”

Inter have one weapon as they chase £63.5m Man Utd forward

Inter Milan will have to pay a huge fee if they are to land Man Utd forward Anthony Martial this summer, according to reports in Italy.

Martial started well at Old Trafford under Louis van Gaal, but struggled under Jose Mourinho as the Portuguese coach stripped the Frenchman of his number nine shirt number.

That led to rumours that Martial would leave the club but the 24-year-old has since regained his number nine shirt, and is starting to produce the form that earned him a move to Man Utd in the first place.

OPINION: Were we all getting carried away with ‘the new Man United’?

Martial has scored 21 goals and five assists in all competitions this season and has become a key part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side that is currently on an 18-match unbeaten run.

And now Calciomercato claims that Martial is a ‘constant presence’ on Inter Milan’s transfer shortlist.

The report adds that Martial’s ‘profile is still considered very welcome’ at Inter in the event that they sell Lautaro Martinez, who has been linked with a huge summer transfer.

The two ‘real obstacles’ in the way of Inter completing a deal for the Man Utd forward are his lengthy contract until 2024 – with an option of another year – and his minimum €70m (£63.5m) valuation.

However, Inter do have one weapon in their armoury with the potential to use defender Milan Skriniar – who has been linked with Man Utd in the past – as a makeweight in the deal to reduce the cost of any transfer.

Johnnies Post Five, Top-Five Finishes at North Country

Click:手机号批量检测微信号

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John’s wrestling recorded five, top-five finishes in a strong field at the annual North Country Open on Saturday, Jan. 30, in Collegeville.

SJU and No. 7 Augsburg supplied the lone NCAA Division III wrestlers in the tournament. The rest of the field featured Division I Minnesota and North Dakota State, as well as Division II Augustana (S.D.), MSU-Mankato, MSU-Moorhead, St. Cloud State and Southwest Minnesota State.

Seniors Mike Pleski (Stacy, Minn./Forest Lake) and Ben Henle (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer) each went 4-1 to finished third at 133 and 141 pounds, respectively. Henle, who is ranked seventh nationally by the National Wrestling Coaches’ Association (NWCA), won his first two matches via fall before he suffered a 7-5 loss to Minnesota’s Ben Brancale, the eventual champion, in the semifinals. He bounced back with a 6-3, double-overtime decision and claimed third place with a 10-7 victory over North Dakota State’s David Flynn.

Pleski, like Henle, won his first two matches (both by major decision) before he lost his semifinal match by a two-point margin (4-2) to Augsburg’s Sam Bennyhoff, the eventual champion. He responded with a pair of one-point wins, including a 5-4 decision over the Gophers’ Gresh Jones to place third.

Junior Teddy Erickson (Annandale, Minn.) went 3-1 to place third at 165 pounds. He avenged Jan. 24’s 9-6 loss to Augsburg’s Brady McFarland with a 6-2 decision in the rematch to start the day. Erickson lost his semifinal bout but took third with a 7-2 win over NDSU’s Alex Blaney.

Senior John Wells (Janesville, Wis./Milton) followed a similar path as Erickson by avenging Sunday’s loss to Augsburg’s James Goman with a 5-4 win Saturday morning at 125 pounds. He lost to St. Cloud State’s Joel Salomon in the third-place match via fall.

Junior Colin Fisher (Eagan, Minn.) bounced back from a loss in his first match with wins in his next three bouts at heavyweight. A 4-1 loss to Minnesota’s Luke Destiche in the consolation semifinal sent him to the fifth-place match, where he pinned Southwest State’s Jack Ryan in 4:39.
