Prep45.com Increases Coverage of Minnesota State High School Wrestling Tournament

For the past five years, fans that could not attend the Minnesota State Wrestling Tournament in person had only been able to watch wrestlers and teams that qualified for the championship semifinals and finals. This year every match wrestled at the State Tournament will be live streamed on Prep45.com.

The MSHSL approved the increase in coverage in an effort to reward and showcase more hard-working student-athletes.

“There are eight mats that run matches simultaneously during the state tournament, so a lot of planning and cooperation among the wrestling community was needed to cover all 1,512 matches that will be wrestled over the three-day tournament,” said Producer of the live stream Lance Hughes. “It’s really the dedicated people within the wrestling community that are willing to give their time to the sport, so students get more well-deserved recognition, who are making this increased coverage possible.”

GrandStadium, which is the company that produces live streams for the Minnesota State High School League events on Prep45.com, is working with The Guillotine and their community of fans to help make the live stream experience of the State High School Wrestling Tournament a success.

The cost to view the live stream coverage is $4.97 per day. Fans can access the action directly at www.prep45.com or visit The Guillotine’s 2015 High School Tournament Time Page for links.

SJU Wrestling Earns Academic Honor, Guffey and Michaelis Named All-America Scholars

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – The Saint John’s University wrestling team and two of its seniors, Evan Guffey (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt) and Ryan Michaelis (Monticello, Minn.), received 2014-15 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) academic honors at the NCAA Division III Championships March 13-14.

Guffey and Michaelis were named NWCA Scholar All-Americans, while the Johnnies recorded the 10th-best GPA (3.45) en route to NWCA All-Academic team honors.

The honor is the third for Michaelis, who made his third consecutive appearance at the NCAA Division III Championships March 13. He lost his first bout at 197 pounds to No. 2/4 Joe Giraramita of Cortland State (N.Y.), 7-5, and left the tournament with a 4-2 loss to Lycoming’s (Pa.) Johnathan Secor. An accounting major with a 3.61 GPA, Michaelis ended the season with a 12-4 record. He was a three-time Academic All-MIAC (minimum 3.50 GPA) honoree and a two-time Capital One Academic All-District selection in football.

Guffey battled back from a loss in his first match of the NCAA West Regional with a pair of wins, including a 6-4 decision over returning All-American Sean Ambrocio of Concordia (Wis.). He just missed a trip to nationals with a 6-0 decision in the third-place match to finish the year with a 14-14 record. Guffey is a nursing major with a 3.31 GPA.

SJU has now totaled 14 Scholar All-Americans over the last seven seasons.

To be eligible for Scholar All-America distinction, a student-athlete must carry a GPA of at least 3.20 (cumulative or last academic year) and meet one of the three criteria: qualify for the NCAA Championships, place in the top six at the NCAA regional, or win more than 66 percent of his matches and wrestle in 50 percent of the scheduled dates.

The team grade-point average was determined using a system that includes 12 student-athletes from each program, including all 10 that competed at the NCAA regional.

The Johnnies tied for third at the NCAA West Regional and tied for 55th at nationals in 2014-15. SJU has qualified two or more wrestlers to the national tournament in 25 of the last 26 seasons.
