Leeds end 16-year wait for return to the Premier League

Leeds have begun their celebrations after sealing promotion to the Premier League following 16 years outside the top flight.

The West Yorkshire club were guaranteed automatic promotion from the Sky Bet Championship after second-placed West Brom lost 2-1 at Huddersfield.

Leeds had moved on to 87 points on Thursday following their 1-0 home win against Barnsley and West Brom’s defeat left them five points behind with one game to play.

Jubilant fans gathered at Elland Road to celebrate the club’s return to the top table of English football, while the players were also in party mode as they danced and saluted supporters from the windows of the stadium.

And videos on social media showed manager Marcelo Bielsa, the inspiration behind the club’s resurgence, elbow-bumping fans near his home in Wetherby as they congratulated him.

Homegrown midfielder Kalvin Phillips declared Bielsa the “best manager in the world”.

The 24-year-old told BBC Radio Leeds: “There’s no manager I would rather be under than Marcelo Bielsa right now.

“At an age when I’m trying to develop, he’s the perfect manager to have. The Premier League is the best league in the world and, after 16 years, we’re back in there.”

Captain Liam Cooper said the club’s promotion had “still not properly sunk in”.

“Our club, our fans and our players have sacrificed so much – we’ve been in the doldrums for 16 years,” he added.

“To be part of this team and to lead this team to promotion back to where we know we’ve always belonged is unbelievable.”

It has been a long and often tortuous road back for Leeds, who were relegated from the Premier League in 2004 amid a spectacular financial meltdown.

The West Yorkshire club have spent 13 seasons in the Championship and three in League One after dropping into the third tier for the first time in their history in 2007.

Leeds’ debts had spiralled to over £100million in 2003 under former chairman Peter Ridsdale and there were fears the club could go out of business.

They were forced to sell all their players and other assets, including Elland Road Stadium and their Thorp Arch academy, and have since stumbled from crisis to crisis under a succession of different owners.

Leeds went into administration in 2007 under Ken Bates and fared little better under subsequent owners GFH Capital before the arrival of controversial Italian Massimo Cellino.

During Cellino’s chaotic three-year ownership Leeds had seven different managers, but current owner Andrea Radrizzani bought a 50 per cent stake in Leeds in January 2017 to signal the dawning of a new era.

Radrizzani purchased the remaining 50 per cent from Cellino the following May and Leeds made a bold statement of intent by appointing Bielsa in the summer of 2018.

It was an expensive gamble, but Bielsa proved an instant hit, transforming the same squad he inherited into genuine promotion challengers in his first season.

That ended in disappointment when Leeds fell short in the play-offs, but Bielsa and his players have bounced back.

Leeds have continued to light up the Championship with Bielsa’s exciting brand of football and few could begrudge them their place back among the elite.

Former manager Kevin Blackwell, who guided Leeds to the Championship play-off final in 2006, said promotion was “massive” for the club.

“I’m absolutely delighted for them,” Blackwell, recently appointed as Neil Warnock’s assistant at Middlesbrough, told the PA news agency. “It’s something I wish I could have done, but didn’t quite manage it.

“Knowing the club, the fans and the expectation, this is massive for them and all credit to Bielsa and his team for getting them over the line. I know how tough it is.

“Leeds United is one of the clubs that every team wants to beat and that’s what makes it harder to get out of the Championship, so all credit to the owner, Bielsa and his players.

“Believe me, to win the Championship it is a tough, tough slog and the pressure was really on Leeds this time.”

Leeds promotion was also greeted with joy by a host of their former players.

Former goalkeeper Paul Robinson told Sky Sports: “It’s been long-awaited and very long overdue. When I played that last game in 2004, 16 years ago, you never envisaged that Leeds United would be out of the top flight for so long, and even dropping to the third tier of English football.

“From what Marcelo Bielsa inherited two-and-a-half-years ago – a team that finished 14th in the Championship – to now automatic promotion to the Premiership, it’s absolutely fantastic.

“The biggest thing Leeds did at the end of last season was keep the manager.

“We’ve heard plaudits from many managers, Pep Guardiola to name one, that name him as a mentor or guru.

“He’s an oddball, he’s a scientist, he’s a professor of the game.

“We’ve seen that with spygate and everything else that comes with him, but it just all adds to the Leeds United history. Love them or loathe them, they’re back in the Premiership.”

Liverpool midfielder James Milner, who started his career at Elland Road, tweeted: “Congratulations LUFC. #backwhereyoubelong #MOT”

Former Leeds goalkeeper Nigel Martyn posted: “Congratulations to everyone at @LUFC on promotion, so pleased for the management, players and most importantly the fans. The football has been amazing to watch and it’s fully deserved. Now go and win it outright!!”

Lampard denies Chelsea have unfair advantage over Man Utd

Frank Lampard has rejected Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s claims that Chelsea boast an unfair advantage in Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final.

Chelsea slipped up 3-0 at Sheffield United on Saturday, but then beat Norwich at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, leaving five days until Sunday’s last-four Wembley battle.

United drew 2-2 with Southampton at Old Trafford on Monday, then won 2-0 at Crystal Palace on Thursday night.

FEATURE: Premier League winners and losers

Despite United having just three days’ preparation for Sunday’s FA Cup clash, Blues boss Lampard has dismissed the idea the west Londoners have an extra edge.

Asked if Chelsea do have an advantage this weekend, Lampard replied: “No I don’t think we do. I think we’ve played Saturday and Tuesday this week, they’ve played on Monday and Thursday, so we’ve both played two games in this week as it stands.

“We’re in a period where we’re playing games all the time very regularly, and you become ‘play, recover, play again, recover’, and you work with the squad as it is.

“It’s an age-old question a lot of managers, you probably dig out the times when I’ve mentioned it, but at the same time it isn’t about advantage or not.

“Sometimes it works in your favour to be playing regularly and ticking over, so, no, I don’t see it.”

Chelsea must do without France’s World Cup winner N’Golo Kante against the Red Devils on Sunday.

The former Leicester star remains sidelined with a hamstring injury, leaving Jorginho in the frame to sit at the base of midfield again.

Lampard admitted he expects a strong examination of Chelsea’s qualities this weekend, heaping the praise on United’s in-form forward trio of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood.

“We know they are playing well, they’ve got a very, very potent front three; probably the most potent front three in the country, in terms of pure numbers anyway, in terms of goals,” said Lampard.

“And obviously (Bruno) Fernandes has made a huge difference coming in in January.

So you see the strength has brought to their team with individual quality.

“But we know that. So we have to be confident ourselves, deal with their threats, and worry about us as well.”

Ajax recruit Hakim Ziyech is already training with Chelsea’s senior squad despite not being eligible for selection until next season.

Chelsea have already completed high-profile deals for both the Morocco winger and RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner, and are expected to continue reshaping the squad with more signings this summer.

But when quizzed on whether Chelsea could be primed to spend big this summer, Lampard kept his cards close to his chest.

Asked if the Blues could be ready to embark on a recruitment drive to rival the overhaul of owner Roman Abramovich’s first summer at the Stamford Bridge helm, Lampard said: “We’ll see, I can’t answer that one as we’re not there yet.

“We have to focus on what’s in front of us.

“I wouldn’t want to compare it to any other spending summer or not. We’ll see how I feel and we feel as a club.

“If the squad needs strengthening or the balancing needs changing, if it does and we make moves great, but at the moment we don’t know.”

Three-Match Win Streaks Ground Blue Hawks

DICKINSON, N.D. – It didn’t take long for No.6-ranked Concordia to get back on the dual-meet winning track. The Cobbers posted a pair of three-match win streaks at Dickinson State and rolled to a 21-14 win over the Blue Hawks.

The win was just what the doctor ordered less than five days after falling at Augsburg. Concordia traveled west to Dickinson, won six of the 10 individual bouts and improved their dual-meet record to 11-5 on the season.

The trio of lightweights gave Concordia the momentum in the match by recording the first three-match win streak. Jakob Stageberg, Gabe Foltz and No.4-ranked Jacoby Bergeron all posted wins to stake the Cobbers to a 10-0 lead.

Stageberg won 10-4 at 125 then Foltz followed with a 9-4 decision at 133. It was Stageberg’s 22nd win of the season and he is now 22-10 in his first season of collegiate wrestling. Bergeron dominated his match at 141 and earned an 11-3 major decision. It was Bergeron’s 18th consecutive win and improves his team-best record to 29-6 on the year. He is one win shy of breaking into the rare 30-win club and needs only 10 more victories to break the school record for wins in a single season.

Concordia dropped the next two bouts in the match and saw their lead shrink to 10-7. Senior Jake Krogstad then started the second three-match win streak by gaining a 6-4 decision at 165. Krogstad, who is currently ranked fourth in the latest national rankings, recorded his 16th win for the year and moves his record to 16-8.

No.8-ranked Sebastian Gardner and Brandon Larson followed Krogstad’s win with victories of their own to give Concordia an insurmountable 21-7 lead with two matches left.

Gardner won by a technical fall at 174. He finished off his opponent at the 4:52 mark after he pushed his lead to 18-0. Gardner is now 19-6 on the year and needs one more victory to become the fourth CC wrestler to reach the 20-win mark for the year.

Larson closed out the match with an 8-4 decision at 184. Larson is slowly rounding into form after not wrestling for almost a full month. Larson is 2-1 in his three matches in January and is now 10-4 overall.

Concordia will now have a 10-day break to train and prepare for their final multi-team invitational of the regular season. The Cobbers will next hit the mat on Jan. 7 when they participate in the North Country Open held at St. John’s.

News on Becky Lynch’s Heel Turn, Road Dogg Responds To Criticism

When Becky Lynch turned on SmackDown Women’s Champion Charlotte Flair after SummerSlam, it appeared at first to be something that WWE envisioned and that they were going to roll on with. However, on Smackdown it became clear that WWE wanted Becky to be a heel, forcing that by having her insult the crowd.

With the company now committed to a Becky Lynch vs. Charlotte Flair program and Charlotte as the face, there is a very real possibility that the audience will continue to cheer Becky and as such, there is a risk that Charlotte Flair could become the female version of Roman Reigns who the fans will boo, according to a recent article in The Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

On Twitter, a fan questioned WWE forcing a heel turn on Becky Lynch, suggesting that everything that has happened on TV ultimately portrays Lynch as a face. WWE’s Brian “Road Dogg” James, who is one of the company’s creative writers on Smackdown, responded with:

Becky Lynch is finally being given a push and people are fighting against it because it’s not how they would’ve booked it. SMH.
The heel promo she cut on #SDLive was better than all the jokey stuff she’s been given as a face and 10x more fresh than another Charlotte heel run.
— Ryan Satin (@ryansatin) August 22, 2018

AMEN ????
— Brian G. James (@WWERoadDogg) August 22, 2018

Are you seriously gonna slober up to Ryan Satin of all people to pretend this is a good idea. Being made a heel just to lose to Charlotte is not a push. Especially not when you’re the most popular female on the roster.
— Ali Khan (@LahoriLawyer) August 23, 2018

I agree with Ryan on this one mate. We’ve disagreed before and I’m sure we will again. If I lose a chess game with my best friend, then beat him up because I lost, am I in the right?
— Brian G. James (@WWERoadDogg) August 23, 2018

But the story we’ve been told is, Becky has had to fight and struggle to earn an opportunity at the title. Charlotte was just handed an opportunity and took the moment away from her best friend. Becky is right and justified in everything she says and is no way the bad person.
— Joshua Roberts (@JoshuaRoberts9) August 23, 2018

That’s not the story you were told, that’s the story you wanted to hear. She had to do the exact same thing as Charlotte did, beat Carmella! They both climbed the exact same mountain ?
— Brian G. James (@WWERoadDogg) August 23, 2018

Debatable. Charlotte came back and only had to beat Carmella. Becky had to beat the entire women’s division. It comes across that Charlotte had an easier mountain to climb…Just so you know, I think SD has been amazing for months. Just feel real strongly on this Becky situation
— Joshua Roberts (@JoshuaRoberts9) August 23, 2018

This!! This is the story people are seeing. If it’s not the story you wanted people to see you need to work on your storytelling. Becky had to put herself on a win streak to get her match with Carmella. Carmella pissed off Paige for Charlotte to get her match.
— hawaii girl dayno (@beckylinzz) August 23, 2018

After this series of tweets, several other fans jumped on his response basically disagreeing with him that they didn’t “climb the same mountain” and the entire thread pretty much blew up.
