Ruby Rose deletes Twitter after critics suggest she is not lesbian ‘enough’ to play new Batwoman

The actress set to play the first openly gay superhero has deleted her Twitter account after receiving abuse and claims she is "not gay enough" for the role.

Australian Ruby Rose, who describes herself as "gender fluid", was announced as the new Batwoman for an upcoming TV series last week.

The series will see Batwoman’s alter ego, Kate Kane, portrayed as a lesbian, and is expected to air in late 2019 or 2020.

The character has been openly gay since 2006, in an effort by DC Comics to make its publications more diverse.

Rose, 32, said she has faced a barrage of negative tweets about her own sexuality since the announcement, including questions over her sexuality.

In one, a critic wrote Rose had been selected as "a ‘hot’ white person that isn’t too gay to offend the straights".

Rose wrote on Instagram: The Bat is out of the bag and I am beyond thrilled and honoured

In a final series of tweets before deleting her account, the actress wrote: "Where on earth did ‘Ruby is not a lesbian therefore she can’t be Batwoman’ come from? Has to be the funniest, most ridiculous thing I’ve ever read.

"I came out at 12? And have for the past five years had to deal with ‘she’s too gay’. How do y’all flip it like that? I didn’t change. I wish we would all support each other and our journeys.

"But hey, love a challenge. I just wish women and the LGBT community supported each other more.

"I am looking forward to getting more than four hours of sleep and to break from Twitter to focus all my energy on my next two projects. If you need me, I’ll be on my Bat Phone."

Rose, who made a name for herself in Netflix series Orange Is The New Black, also changed her Instagram profile so that only people she knows can comment on her posts.

Rose previously told US talk show host Jimmy Kimmel that she was "thrilled" to be playing Batwoman and that she used to make bat wings and jump off "high places" as a child.

Best superhero movies of all time

The tearful star added: "I feel like the reason I kept getting so emotional is because when I was growing up watching TV, I never saw someone I could identify with, let alone a superhero."

She will be introduced as Batwoman in a December crossover event between other DC Comics shows Arrow, The Flash and Supergirl.

A standalone series about Batwoman is in development for the 2019-20 TV season.

Mourinho compares Tottenham start to first months at Porto

Jose Mourinho sees similarities when comparing his start at Tottenham to the first few months he enjoyed at Porto.

Tottenham are fourth in a Premier League table both since Mourinho’s appointment and Project Restart. Not that he’s keeping track or anything.

The club was languishing in the bottom half under Mauricio Pochettino but Mourinho has them within a point of potential Europa League qualification with two games remaining.

Dear Jose…never drop Toby Alderweireld again

They face Champions League contenders Leicester and struggling Crystal Palace in those fixtures as Mourinho looks to earn a place in a competition he has won twice.

While his success with Manchester United in 2017 has been somewhat forgotten, winning the UEFA Cup with Porto in 2003 helped lay foundations that won them the Champions League a year later, and gave Mourinho a springboard to Premier League stardom.

He was appointed by Chelsea soon after and his managerial career skyrocketed from there, but Mourinho feels he is in a similar situation in north London.

The Portuguese took over at Porto in January 2002 and took them to third in the Primeira Liga, before winning the title in both of the subsequent two years.

Mourinho claims he inherited a club where “everything was broken with an incredible sequence of injuries” in November, but is seeing enough progress and reasons to be positive.

“We, myself and the staff, analyse internally and we know we are doing a very positive job,” he told Sky Sports.

“I can compare it a little bit with my experience at Porto. When I got to Porto in January, that half of the season was really hard, but was so important for the preparation of the next one.

“So that’s what I’m doing now, accumulating knowledge and experience in the club to prepare for what’s next.”

Man United to almost double Greenwood wage with new deal

Mason Greenwood is in line to almost double his wages at Manchester United.

Greenwood has established himself in the Manchester United first team this season, scoring 16 goals as part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s exciting new attack.

The 18-year-old only signed his latest contract in October 2019 but his rapid rate of development will earn him improved terms and a ‘slight extension’ to his current deal.

Rashford is now Manchester United’s sharpest edge…

The Sun claim his £25,000-a-week wage will be upgraded to around £40,000, with ‘incremental rises’ and ‘success-related clauses’ included.

Old Trafford chiefs have been reluctant to reward players so young with such deals after the rise and fall of talents such as Adnan Januzaj and Federico Macheda.

But ‘they have no such concerns’ when it comes to Greenwood, who is also expected to earn an England call-up in due course.

The striker has previously rejected a life-changing amount of money to join Juventus, while Manchester United themselves turned down an approach from Crystal Palace to sign him on loan.

Solskjaer insists Greenwood is not in danger of playing too much, too soon at a high level.

“He’s coped really well with the demands on him,” he said. “We’ve managed him as well as we could.

“He’s come back from lockdown flying, the sharpness is there, he’s gained a few kilos and a lot of experience in his own abilities.

“There are only two games left in the league, hopefully two in FA Cup and three or four in Europa League, so he’ll be fine. There’s no chance of a burnout, he’s been excellent.”

Guardiola explains how Man City ‘weren’t ready’ against Arsenal

Pep Guardiola admitted that Manchester City did not deserve to go through in the FA Cup against Arsenal.

After missing out on retaining their Premier League title, City have been focusing on cup competitions. Having already won the EFL Cup, they were in the hunt for a treble.

Two goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang mean that the FA Cup is beyond their grasp, though. Arsenal will contest the final instead of City.

And Guardiola admitted that their first half performance was not good enough – but vowed to build up form ahead of the Champions League.

Guardiola told BT Sport: “We didn’t play good. The only regret is not to lose the game – that can happen – but it is that we did not play the first half like we play the second.

“We did not play good and on a day when you had to, we did not.

“We started low and without the way you have to play. We are always ready many times but today we were not.

“I knew they play five at the back and with high pressing. They defended well. It happened against Liverpool too so we knew it.

“But we were not good. We have to play good to go through.

“Now we have two weeks so we want to play the final [of the Champions League]. We want to be in rhythm. It is the last opportunity we have to go through [to win another trophy].”

Dyche delighted with Burnley clean sheet record after ‘bizarre’ Norwich win

Sean Dyche believed Burnley’s win at Norwich was ‘strange’, but praised Nick Pope for his 15th clean sheet of the campaign.

By winning 2-0 at Carrow Road, Burnley confirmed their place in the top 10, as well as their most victories in a single Premier League season.

It wasn’t how they would have expected to do it, though, as for half the game they were playing against nine men.

Norwich had Emiliano Buendia and Josip Drmic sent off in the first half, before Chris Wood put Dyche’s side in front. And a Ben Gofrey own goal late on ensured Burnley travelled back home with three points.

The clean sheet was goalkeeper Nick Pope’s 15th of the season, more than anyone else in the top flight. And Dyche was pleased with Burnley’s defensive robustness, despite the limited threat from their hosts.

Dyche told Sky Sports: “I don’t think I’ve played against a team with two sendings off. It was a bizarre game! We’ll take the clean sheet and the win.

“To have 15 clean sheets and the wins on the table is very pleasing so I’m delighted for the players.

“We needed something because it was a strange game. The whole thing was strange. He’s [Chris Wood] found the net from an awkward one.

“We didn’t think he would be playing through this restart but he’s found the net for us again. Woody finds another goal!

“In the second half, we tried but our quality in the final third was quite obvious today.

“It’s hard to judge it. We weren’t really at it in the first half but we just need that sharpness. It’s a lot to ask of the players.

“We’re more or less putting the same players out every week. The rest period will give the lads a few days off and hopefully we can get a result [in the next game].”

Minnesota Wrestling: Northwestern Dual Highlights

Three weeks removed from its last dual but fresh off a team title and a pair of individual championships at the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas, No. 1 Minnesota hosted No. 18 Northwestern last Thursday at the Sports Pavilion. After quickly building a 12-0 lead over the Wildcats, the Gophers held on to take the dual, 21-19.

After a forfeit at 174 – the first of three on the evening – gave Minnesota a quick lead, No. 11 Breff Pfarr and No. 2 Scott Schiller posted decisions that pushed the Gopher advantage to 12-0. Northwestern evened the dual over the next three matches before No. 4 Nick Dardanes put Minnesota back on top – 15-12 – with a decision at 141. After the Wildcats again pulled even, this time at 15-15, Minnesota took advantage of a forfeit at 157 to go up six points, a lead that would hold up in the 21-19 victory.

Minnesota returns to action from the fiftieth state – Hawaii – on Dec. 30 when it competes in the inaugural Aloha Open against No. 20 Oregon State, Oklahoma and American. That event will be available to stream on Flowrestling.org (stream requires a FloPRO subscription) and updates will be provided throughout all Gopher matches on the Gopher Wrestling Twitter feed.
