‘Family of Isil terrorists’ behind Indonesia suicide church attack

A family of suicide bombers including children and teenagers were responsible for a series of deadly church attacks in Indonesia on Sunday, the country’s national police chief said.

At least 11 people died and 41 were wounded in three blasts during Sunday services in Indonesia’s second-biggest city Surabaya – the deadliest attacks for years in the world’s biggest Muslim-majority country.

The national police chief, Tito Karnavian, said the family who carried out the attacks had been in Syria, where the Islamic State group until recently controlled a large swath of territory.

The family’s father exploded a car bomb, two sons aged 18 and 16 used a motorbike in their attack and the mother was with two children aged 12 and 9.

The Islamic State group claimed responsibility. "Three martyrdom attacks killed 11 and wounded at least 41 among church guards and Christians," it said via the Telegram messaging app on Sunday afternoon.

Indonesia has been on high alert following attacks by homegrown militants, including some claimed by the Islamic State group, as it grapples with rising intolerance towards religious minorities.

East Java police spokesman Frans Barung Mangera confirmed the deaths of 11 people with 41 injured after three churches were hit by apparently coordinated attacks around 7.30 am (12.30am GMT).

TV footage appeared to show a person on a motorcycle driving into the grounds of one church before a bomb went off seconds later.

Televised eyewitness reports suggested that one suicide bomber was a veiled woman with a couple of children in tow.

Other images showed a vehicle engulfed in flames and plumes of thick black smoke as a body lay outside the gate of Santa Maria Catholic church, with motorcycles toppled over amid the debris.

"I was frightened… many people were screaming," 23-year-old witness Roman told AFP after the blast at Santa Maria.

Police experts disarmed two unexploded bombs at the Gereja Pantekosta Pusat Surabaya (Surabaya Centre Pentecostal Church), which was also hit by a live blast.

Also targeted was the Kristen Indonesia Diponegoro Church.

The attacks came just days after five members of Indonesia’s elite anti-terrorism squad and a prisoner were killed in clashes that saw Islamist inmates take a guard hostage at a high-security jail on the outskirts of Jakarta.

The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for that incident although police denied its involvement.

Police on Sunday said four suspected members of the radical group Jamaah Anshar Daulah had been killed in a shootout during raids linked to the prison riot, but would not comment on whether the group was connected to Sunday’s bombings.

Terror and tourism in Indonesia

Nearly 90 percent of Indonesia’s 260 million people are Muslim, but there are significant numbers of Christians, Hindus and Buddhists.

Concerns about sectarian intolerance have been on the rise, with churches targeted in the past.

Police shot and wounded an IS-inspired radical who attacked a church congregation outside Indonesia’s cultural capital Yogyakarta with a sword during a Sunday mass in February. Four people were injured.

In 2000 bombs disguised as Christmas gifts delivered to churches and clergymen killed 19 people on Christmas Eve and injured scores more across the country.

The archipelago nation of some 17,000 islands has long struggled with Islamic militancy, including the 2002 Bali bombings that killed 202 people – mostly foreign tourists – in the country’s worst-ever terror attack.

Sunday’s bombings had the highest death toll since nine people were killed in 2009 attacks on two luxury hotels in Jakarta.

Security forces have arrested hundreds of militants during a sustained crackdown in recent years that smashed some networks, and most recent attacks have been low-level and targeted domestic security forces.

But the coordinated nature of Sunday’s bombings suggested a higher level of planning, analysts said.

"Recent (previous) attacks have been far less ‘professional’," Sidney Jones, an expert on Southeast Asian terrorism and director of the Jakarta-based Institute for Policy Analysis of Conflict, told AFP.

The emergence of IS has proved a potent new rallying cry for radicals, sparking fears that homegrown extremist outfits could get a new lease of life.

A gun and suicide attack in the capital Jakarta left four attackers and four civilians dead in 2016, and was the first assault claimed by IS in Southeast Asia.

Emmanuel Macron waxwork faces meltdown over complaints French president looks ‘tense and anguished’

A €60,000 (£52,500) waxwork of Emmanuel Macron destined for the Paris equivalent of Madame Tussauds may be melted down after social media complaints that it made him look like a crazed figure from a horror film.

The Grevin museum was due to unveil its wax version of France’s 40-year old president on May 24, placing him in the company of a string of lifelike sculptures of French and foreign leaders and celebrities.

However, a sneak preview of the wax Macron shown on a TV channel triggered a blizzard of internet scorn, with some commentators  suggesting the museum version, with its arched eyebrows, made him look like a crazed android.

Some Twitter users even likened the boyish centrist leader to the killer doll Chucky from the "Child’s Play" slasher movies.

"Well, he ain’t no oil painting!," noted one. "He’s put on 10 years," complained another. A third claimed the only detail they got right was his trademark blue tie.

Stung by the criticism, museum directors now agree that the wax Macron is perhaps a little unkind. "A tense and anguished face, a frozen statue that doesn’t ‘live’, this is not beautiful, something just doesn’t work,” admitted Grevin’s director, Yves Delhommeau.

The real thing: Emmanuel Macron, pictured on May 10Credit:

"Emmanuel Macron’s statue has not yet been approved, I don’t want a figure so heavily criticised on social networks," he told AFP.

He said the museum had not yet decided whether to try and salvage the current version or start again from scratch, meaning they will have to cancel next week’s planned unveiling.

A Grevin sculpture generally costs between €50-60,000 and takes six months to create but the museum pulled out the stops to release its Donald Trump a mere two months after his election.

Mr Delhommeau pointed out that that the leaked image of the Macron waxwork dated from September and that some of his features had been changed since.

He added that Mr Macron could have made the sculptors’ life easier by agreeing to meet them and have his face scanned to avoid “getting the proportions wrong”. Instead, they had to work off photos.

"We succeeded with Donald Trump, there was no reason to think we couldn’t do the same with Emmanuel Macron, even though more distinctive faces, older and more exaggerated, are often the easiest to do," said Mr Delhommeau.

He said the artist responsible for the controversial Macron waxwork was also behind ones of Mr Trump and French superchef Alain Ducasse, who are both deemed highly lifelike.

Mr Macron’s wife Brigitte, 65, has not authorised the museum to make her statue, and "after what’s happened with her husband, this probably isn’t going to bring her around," he confessed.

How the royal wedding will be celebrated around the world

From Los Angeles to Lesotho, the world is readying to celebrate the Royal wedding on Saturday.

Here is a summary of some of the festivities.

Russia

In Russia, where the Kremlin has been encouraging a return to traditional values and religiosity, the top-selling newspaper ran an article focusing on Ms Markle’s age ahead of the royal wedding.

“’Even if you are over 30, there is still hope to marry a prince …’ There is now evidence to back up this ‘hymn’ of lonely women,” wrote Komsomolskaya Pravda.

“Few thought that this 36-year-old American would be accepted into the royal family! But love overcame age and convention,” it said before recounting the story of how the pair met.

Odnoklassniki, one of Russia’s largest social networks, said on Friday it would broadcast a livestream of the wedding.

Wallis Simpson, pictured after her 1937 wedding to the Duke of Windsor, was the last American to marry into the Royal family

The Russian version of the free newspaper Metro, which is handed out in the Moscow underground, suggested a drinking game that wouldn’t leave readers “indifferent” while watching the nuptials.

Participants should take a sip of “something strong” every time they hear a reference to Prince Harry’s cousin Beatrice, Wallis Simpson, or Grace Kelly, the American actress who married the Prince of Monaco.

After they hear five such references, they should down their drink, it said.

Kenya

A hotel in Nairobi is charging £7,000 to watch the Royal Wedding on television.

The Windsor Golf Hotel & Country Club is selling couples-only tickets at a price equivalent to what the average Kenyan earns in nearly seven years. The six-hour event includes “an English brunch by a seasoned English chef”, champagne toasts to the royal couple and a fashion show.

India

Ipsos Mori poll says Indians care more about the royal wedding than any other nationality – but our correspondent says you wouldn’t know it in Delhi, other than adverts for the usual TV coverage.

Netherlands

In the Netherlands – where royalty is very much loved and there’s a popular television programme tracking what different royals are up to – Dutch schools have been teaching lessons on the British royal wedding.

United States

LA: British pubs across the city are advertising their “slumber parties” for the 4am local time ceremony, with the Cat and Fiddle in Hollywood suggesting revellers come in their pyjamas and fascinators – described helpfully by the LA Times as “the precarious and ostentatious ladies’ headgear constructed for such special events.”

The British Consulate will host 150 for afternoon tea.  Girls studying at Ms Markle’s former school – the Immaculate Heart, in Hollywood – will gather to watch the events as they happen at 4am local time.

New York: Last week eight corgis bounded through Herald Square in central Manhattan, to promote a television drama portraying their courtship. The show, Harry & Meghan: A Royal Romance, aired on Sunday – the night after CNN showed their documentary on the couple.

Humans wishing to emulate the pair, meanwhile, can book the Conrad Hotel’s “Propose like a Prince” package – two nights in their Conrad suite, a helicopter tour of the city, and a private consultation with the London Jewellers, based in TriBeCa, who are offering an exact replica of Ms Markle’s engagement ring. No-one’s actually done it though, perhaps because it costs $10,000.

In the run up to the wedding, the Downton Abbey exhibition in midtown Manhattan has been holding royal wedding talks and etiquette lessons.

And on the day itself pubs will be open from 7am, and the British ambassador to the United Nations will hold a party, as will the British consul – at Harry’s Bar, in lower Manhattan.

Lesotho

Prince Harry spent his 2004 gap year in the South African country, and in 2006 founded the Sentebale charity with Prince Seeiso, to support children in southern Africa living with HIV and Aids.

A street party is being held in the villages of Mohales Hoek to celebrate the royal wedding.

Belgium

The Telegraph asked the European Commission if Jean-Claude Juncker would be watching royal wedding and if the commission wanted to congratulate the happy couple.

"We are always happy when love is in the air," commission spokeswoman Mina Andreeva beamed.

Jean-Claude Juncker is not sure if he will be able to watch the wedding

"When it comes to President Juncker there’s so many things happening around the world so that will depend what the Saturday agenda whether he will tune in or turn his attention to more pressing matters.

"Certainly all the best of luck," she added.

Donald Trump says North Korea summit ‘may not happen’ next month

Click:Glass candle holder

Donald Trump has cast doubt over whether his highly-anticipated meeting with Kim Jong-un, the North Korean leader, will go ahead next month.

"It may not work out for June 12," Mr Trump said. "If it does not happen, maybe it will happen later."

Mr Trump was holding talks with South Korean President Moon Jae-in at the White House, which has been seen as an effort to salvage the landmark meeting.

The US president added that he does believe the North Korean leader is willing to give up nuclear weapons, amid fears about apparent North Korean backpedaling.

"I do think he is serious. I think he is absolutely very serious," Mr Trump said.

"He will be extremely happy" Mr Trump said of Kim, if the deal works out. "He will be very happy."

Mr Trump went on: "You never know about deals…I’ve made a lot of deals. You never really know."

"You’ll know soon," he added, doing little to quell speculation about the wavering prospects of a historic first summit.

The president declined again to say whether he had yet spoken personally to Kim.

He added that North Koreans were "hardworking, great people".

North Korea’s willingness to denuclearise – the very basis for the talks – was recently plunged into doubt when the rogue state denounced US demands for "unilateral nuclear abandonment."

Pyongyang also canceled at the last minute a high-level meeting with the South in protest over joint military drills between Seoul and Washington.

Mr Trump suggested that Kim’s apparent about-face may have been at the behest of Chinese leader Xi Jinping, after their meeting earlier this month.

"There was a difference when Kim Jong Un left China the second time," Trump said. "There was a different attitude after that meeting and I was a little surprised.

Mr Trump described President Xi as a "world class poker player", as he reiterated his suggestion that Kim’s recent meetings with the Chinese President had influenced him to harden his stance.

"I think things changed after that meeting so I can’t say that I am happy about it," Mr Trump said.

The US president struck a conciliatory note in a lengthy Q&A with journalists at the White House as he  again raised the prospect of a windfall for Kim if he co-operates with the US.

"He will be extremely happy" if the deal works out, Mr Trump said.

Asked whether he could guarantee Kim’s safety, Mr Trump said: "He will be safe, he will be happy, his country will be rich. Look at South Korea – don’t forget, we helped South Korea – and it is one of the most incredible countries in terms of what they do.

"I think that he (Kim) will be extremely happy if things work out. Honestly I think if it doesn’t work out he can’t be happy. "

President Moon, who was instrumental in convincing the two sides to sit down and talk, was at pains to stress the concrete results of diplomacy so far – most notably the release of three US citizens held captive in North Korea.

Mr Trump praised his guest, but also indicated that a separate, second round of high-level talks between Mr Moon and Kim may also be on ice. "Right now, he doesn’t know whether or not he has a meeting," Mr Trump said of the South Korean president.

Liverpool urged to sign dream duo in summer transfer splurge

Former Red Neil Mellor has urged Liverpool to dream big in the transfer market if they want to defend their Premier League crown.

Jurgen Klopp’s side will lift the Premier League trophy on Wednesday night after cruising to their first title in 30 years.

And Mellor has urged Klopp and Liverpool not to rest on their laurels and target big names in the summer, although he admits it is unlikely given the club’s transfer policy.

“If it were possible, I’d like to say Robert Lewandowski, I think he’s the best striker in world football at the moment,” Mellor told GentingBet.

“And I think [Kylian] Mbappe is going to be world class footballer in years to come.

FEATURE: Five proven ways Liverpool can replace their front three

“When I look at Liverpool, they have a really settled team unit at the moment and they don’t want to unsettle it by bringing in certain personalities and I think Liverpool have to be careful.

“I’m sure the fans will they want their own individual superstar but Klopp hasn’t been able to get the superstar – he has turned players into superstars Mane and Salah, so we may see another player like this.

“Liverpool will be linked with a lot of players but it will be up to Jurgen Klopp and the personality he wants to come to the club.

“Liverpool aren’t desperate for any player in any position and they are really strong within their squad. They may need some numbers with a couple of players leaving but it’d be interesting to see which type of player Klopp chooses.

“The good thing for Liverpool is now that they are World Champions, Premier League Champions and still European champions, as things stand, they can attract pretty much any player.

“That is the big difference from when Jurgen Klopp came in a few years ago, Liverpool can now attract the top players so if there are players that Jurgen is going to want to go and get, the club will back him.”

McNeil urged to snub Man Utd return due to ‘price tag’

Former Claret Steven Hewitt has urged Dwight McNeil to ignore the advances of Mancester United and remain at Turf Moor for as long as possible.

McNeil has been a regular starter for Burnley ever since his debut in 2018, having joined the the club from United four years earlier.

And his performances have been impressive enough to lead to speculation over a potential return to Old Trafford.

GOSSIP: ‘Desperate’ Man Utd star receives huge Chelsea offer

But Hewitt claims McNeil may not thrive under the pressure at United, and should instead stay with Sean Dyche at Burnley.

“If it was me, I would stay at Burnley,” Hewitt told Tribal Football.

“They’re not the greatest team in the Premier League, but he’s playing week in, week out, whereas if he makes a big money move to, say, Manchester United, then he’s going to have that big price tag on his head.

“That’s added pressure, and because he’d be with big players, he might have one bad game and then he’s out of the team and losing confidence.

“So me personally, I would stay at Burnley. Sean Dyche loves him, he trusts him, so I would stay at Burnley as long as possible.

“If they looked like they were getting relegated, or were relegated, then I’d say go away. Move. Get back in the Premier League.

“But he’s happy at Burnley, so just stay there for another one or two seasons. It’s not a long time, but an extra two seasons under his belt, that would be my advice.”

Hewitt’s comments echo those recently made by McNeil’s father, who said his son should not rush to make any moves.

“Dwight has burst onto the scene, and when he trained with us last season for England he was brilliant,” he told Burnley Express.

“He’s got to stay focused, keep performing well while he’s young, and his time will come.

Click Here: new zealand rugby team jerseys

“I’d say ‘don’t rush anything, just keep playing’ and Dwight is at the right club to do that. He just needs to keep playing games, because that’s the most important thing for somebody his age.

“He’s got the right manager to guide him and he’ll be in no rush to go anywhere. If I was him I’d stay put and keep playing games.”

Woodward steps up chase for top two Man Utd targets; five for sale

Ed Woodward has stepped up his pursuit of two key signings as Manchester United continue to revamp their squad this summer.

United’s ability to sign their primary targets may depend on whether they secure a top-four finish, with Champions League football a potentially crucial carrot.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has identified five players that he would like to sell, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo and Alexis Sanchez will be allowed to leave on a permanent basis, while Phil Jones and Jesse Lingard are also available after falling out of favour.

And the Express claim Woodward will pursue two names United have long been linked with.

Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho is likely to be the most expensive addition after being valued in excess of £100million.

FEATURE: Five alternative managers of the year (even though it’s clearly Klopp)

The England international is thought to be interested in a move to the Premier League, and the offer of the No.7 shirt is also said to be an attractive proposition.

The report claims Woodward will also target Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish, despite the team’s wealth of midfield options.

The 24-year-old impressed once again in Villa’s 1-0 win over Arsenal on Tuesday, and the fee could be dependent on whether the Villans avoid the drop.

Solskjaer admits “big calls” will be made after De Gea criticism

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would not say whether under-fire Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea will start Wednesday’s crucial clash with West Ham.

Just a month on from lauding the 29-year-old as the best in the world, the Red Devils’ goalkeeping dilemma increased after the Spain international cost his side a shot at FA Cup success on Sunday.

De Gea did not cover himself in glory for Olivier Giroud’s opener and was guilty of a shocker as a long-range Mason Mount strike somehow beat him, putting Chelsea in control of a semi-final they would win 3-1.

It was an alarming display that compounded some other glaring errors over the last 18 months, raising awkward questions about his status as number one ahead of Wednesday’s vital clash with West Ham.

MAILBOX: When will Ole get the respect he deserves from ABU365?

Solskjaer was in no mood to focus on the goalkeeper in the build-up and said “this is not going to become a David De Gea press conference”, but questions were natural about a player tied down until at least 2023.

Asked if he could clear up whether De Gea would start against the Hammers, the United boss said with a laugh: “No, because I don’t want to talk about him!

“We stick together as a group. Of course you’re going to stick together as a group and, as I said, he’s proven before he’s mentally strong.

“We’ll stay together and you’ll see the team on Wednesday night.”

Dean Henderson is snapping at De Gea’s heels having shone on loan at Sheffield United, while Sergio Romero, the back-up goalkeeper surprisingly omitted from the FA Cup semi-final starting line-up, is waiting in the wings.

Selecting the Argentina international against West Ham would be a big call but Solskjaer has shown during his time in the Old Trafford hotseat that he is willing to make such decisions.

“Well, you have to (make big calls),” the United boss said.

“Every position is a big one here at this club so you’ve just got to do what is right for the team and the club.

“We’ll do that on Wednesday, we’ll do that on Sunday and then when the season’s finished we’ll make more decisions.”
