An Air India flight was delayed on Sunday when a swarm of honey bees landed on the cockpit window, causing chaos before take-off.
The pilots noticed the bees as the plane was due to leave the city of Kolkata for Agartala with 136 passengers and crew on board, including Bangladesh’s information minister, Muhammad Hasan Mahmud.
Officials said the swarm of bees was "attacking ground staff" and became angry when staff tried to remove them from the window.
Windscreen wipers were then used to try and usher the bees away, but when this failed, officials decided to blast the insects with water.
Fire services were called to fix the problem and airport official Kaushik Bhattcharya said they had to "spray water to dislodge the honey bees" and that "after nearly an hour-long operation," the bees could be driven away.
An Air India spokesperson said further movement could have "damaged the plane and harmed the passengers" if the bees flew into the engines.
Luckily, it was found that there was no damage to the aircraft and the bees did not enter through the engines. The flight was delayed for more than three hours.
It was previously delayed due to other technical issues but it eventually took off at 12.45 pm.
Honey bees can be up to 15mm in length with queen bees measuring up to 20mm. Bees often swarm when a queen bee leaves her colony to find a new home with other worker bees.
The New Zealand village of Mangonui has banned a replica of Captain Cook’s HMS Endeavour from docking in its port in response to objections from the Māori community to the "barbarian" explorer.
The replica is part of a fleet circumnavigating the country as part of a series of events commemorating the 250th anniversary of Cook’s arrival in New Zealand and the early contact between the Māori and Europeans.
The head of Northland’s Ngāti Kahu tribe, Anahera Herbert-Graves, told Radio New Zealand that Cook was “a barbarian”.
“Wherever he went, like most people of the time of imperial expansion, there were murders, there were abductions, there were rapes, and just a lot of bad outcomes for the indigenous people… He didn’t discover anything down here, and we object to Tuia 250 using euphemisms like ‘encounters’ and ‘meetings’ to disguise what were actually invasions.”
The Hon Kelvin Davis, New Zealand’s Minister for Māori Crown Relations: Te Arawhiti, said the government "completely accept and respect Ngāti Kahu’s position as mana whenua (the right of a Māori tribe to manage a particular area of land)".
"Tuia 250 is about having honest conversations about our history. We’ve always been open about the fact that these are not easy conversations to have – there is real hurt that remains for many of our people. The first encounters in our country between Cook and Māori were not a fairy tale, and this is not a celebration of Cook – it’s a commemoration of those first encounters.
"This is also a chance for Māori to share their true history, to tell of their loss, and to do so on a national stage. Māori will be the ones driving the events at each landing site – and the Māori perspective, Māori stories and history will have rightful prominence," he said.
The ban drew support from First Nations people in Australia, where there has been fierce debate over Cook’s legacy, re-ignited last April when the government announced a new memorial to the Royal Navy captain would be built at Botany Bay as part of a $50 million redevelopment to commemorate the 1770 landing there.
Noongar Elder Ben Taylor, a leader among the Aboriginal people of South-West Western Australia, told The Daily Telegraph that a similar ban should be put in place across Australia.
“He was an invader, a coloniser. He put that flag up and all that flag has brought is misery, the loss of land, the loss of culture, the loss of our religion and everything – and all the massacres. That replica ship is the symbol of dispossession,” he said.
In Gisborne, 800km from Mangonui, Rongowhakaata Trust representative Amohaere Houkamau said a ceremony would be held for the nine local Māori people who were shot or otherwise injured when the British landed in October 1769, and that it would be more appropriate for “descendants of the colonialists” to welcome the fleet.
Tensions around Cook have been rising in Gisborne for more than a year, in part because Poverty Bay still officially carries the name given to it by Cook, rather than its original name Tūranganui-a-Kiwa.
A statue of Cook in Gisborne on New Zealand’s North Island was removed recently by the local council after it was repeatedly vandalised.
Many other communities in the region have expressed concern about Cook’s place in history and the official representation of his legacy.
Debate has continued in the Cook Islands, a nation in the South Pacific, over changing its name, with “Avaiki Nui” a favoured alternative.
The Ministry for Culture and Heritage’s Deputy Chief Executive, Tamsin Evans, said the Government had acknowledged the concerns of Māori community concerns, and the fleet would stop only at communities “where a welcome is clear”.
“We know there are groups of people that have strong feelings. Tuia 250 is a commemoration in which we can have honest conversations about our history,” she said.
Dr David Robinson, a historian at Edith Cowan University in Perth, told The Telegraph that the ban was “fantastic”.
“They are exercising their right to historical autonomy in a way. They feel strongly about that kind of impost and have the ability to influence events – good on them.”
Dr Robinson said an “honest national conversation is needed about colonial history."
“I don’t think that forcing a conclusion on communities will lead to harmony or reconciliation of any kind. An active conversation and an honest appraisal of history is healthy and necessary,” he said.
Police have freed hundreds of manacled boys from a madrassa in northern Nigeria for the third time in a month, raising fears of systemic torture and sexual abuse in the region’s Islamic schools.
Officers leading a raid on the Mal Niga school in the city of Katsina late on Wednesday found more than 500 boys and young men, many of whom had been chained to walls, molested and beaten.
The discovery followed a pattern that has become grimly familiar in Nigeria’s mostly Muslim north. More than 1,200 males, some as young as five, have been freed in three police operations since late September.
In all three cases, many were found to have been beaten, starved, sexually abused and held in chains, sometimes for so long that they were unable to walk unaided after their rescue.
As in the previous two cases, Mal Niga separated its pupils. One building was well-kept and students living there were not regularly mistreated.
But a second, filled with shackles, essentially functioned as a torture centre, a common feature at all three madrassas raided so far. Here inmates were held in chains and starved.
Newcomers and rebels were generally held in the second building, victims said, although students in the first were sometimes taken there to be beaten and molested.
The almost identical nature of the alleged abuse in the three madrassas, which are located across two separate states, has raised fears that the scale of the abuse could be much deeper than at first believed.
As many as 10m children are educated in privately owned madrassas across Nigeria, mostly in the north, according to Muslim Rights Concern, a local advocacy group.
Parents often send their children to private madrassas because they provide a better quality education than state schools — as well as providing more in-depth religious learning.
Adults also attend the schools, either to study the Koran or because they purport to offer university degrees.
Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria’s president and a native of Katsina state, pledged to shut down madrassas in June before the abuses came to light. This week, he promised again to close those that treat students badly.
“The government cannot allow centres where people, male or female, are maltreated in the name of religion,” a spokesman for Mr Buhari said.
The owner and five members of staff at Mal Niga have been arrested, police said.
Acting with the Stars
Mode comique on

Barring any health emergencies, the game is scheduled to take place on Saturday July 4.
What time does Norwich v Brighton kick-off?
The game is scheduled for a 12.30pm kick-off, the first of five Premier League matches that day.
What is at stake?
It’s a crucial game for both teams. Norwich were battered 4-0 by Arsenal in the last outing, cutting them off at the bottom more than ever. Another defeat could be catastrophic to the Canaries’ ever-decreasing survival chances.
Brighton, on the other hand, have been in good form since the restart. The lost 3-0 to Man Utd last time out but have managed to haul themselves to within a win or two or survival, so they are not short of incentive at Carrow Road.
Where can I watch Norwich v Brighton?
The match will be broadcast by BT Sports.
Is Norwich v Brighton free-to-air?
It’s not, no. BT Sports have opted not to make any of their live Premier League matches free-to-air, so you will need a subscription.
What is the team news?
Grant Hanley remains sidelined for Norwich, who have not had much luck with injuries lately. Josip Drmic and Onel Hernandez could start after featuring heavily as substitutes in recent games.
Aaron Webster is a doubt for Brighton after missing the defeat to Manchester United, and Jose Izquierdo is definitely out. Neal Maupay is pushing for a recall in attack.
What happened in the reverse match?
Leandro Trossard and Shane Duffy helped themselves to the goals back in November as Brighton secured a reasonably routine 2-0 win over Norwich at the Amex Stadium.
What are the odds?
Brighton are the favourites to claim all three points here, with odds of around 11/8. Norwich can be backed at 2/1, while the draw is priced at 9/4.
Rather a lot, as it happens. Wolves are hoping to take advantage of Leicester’s stuttering form and get themselves into the Champions League for next season. They are currently just off the pace, although they also have Manchester United and Chelsea in their path too.
Arsenal hammered Norwich 4-0 last time out to boost their chances of getting into the Europa League next season, but inconsistency has blighted their season so far and they will be keen not to fall into that trap again here.
Where can I watch Wolves v Arsenal?
The match will be broadcast by Sky Sports.
Is Wolves v Arsenal free-to-air?
It’s not, no, meaning you are either going to need a Sky Sports subscription to watch it or buy a Now TV sports pass.
What is the team news?
Wolves have no injury or suspension worries at all ahead of the game, giving Nuno the luxury of having a full squad from which to pick his team.
Sadly for Mikel Arteta, Arsenal can’t say the same. First choice goalkeeper Berndt Leno is out with the injury he sustained against Brighton and is likely to miss the rest of the season at least. Brazilian pair Gabriel Martinelli and Pablo Mari are also sidelined.
Matteo Guendouzi may return to the squad though after falling out of favour.
What happened in the reverse match?
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Raul Jimenez were on target as the two sides played out an absorbing 1-1 draw back in November.
What are the odds?
Wolves are the favourites here with odds of around 13/10. Arsenal and the draw are both priced at around 12/5.
Barring any health emergencies, the game is scheduled to take place on Sunday July 5.
What time does Burnley v Sheffield United kick-off?
The game is scheduled for a 12pm kick-off and is the first of four Premier League matches that day.
What is at stake?
Sheffield United’s poor form since the restart and Burnley’s two wins on the bounce has seen this game become quite important in the race for a Europa League spot. Burnley have climbed above the Blades in the table, although they have played a game more.
Where can I watch Burnley v Sheffield United?
The match will be broadcast by Sky Sports.
Is Burnley v Sheffield United free-to-air?
It is, yes. The game has been selected by Sky TV for free-to-air, although you will need a Now TV pass or Sky Sports subscription if you want to watch the other two games they are broadcasting that day.
What is the team news?
Sheffield United got a vital win over Tottenham in their last game but they are not without their woes. John Fleck, John Lundstram, and Luke Freeman will all be out for ‘a couple of weeks’ according to Blades boss Chris Wilder. Jack O’Connell is back in training but may not be risked again.
Burnley are struggling for players at the moment after Jack Cork joined Ashley Barnes, Chris Wood, Robbie Brady, Johan Berg Gundmundsson, and Matt Lowton on the injury list. Aaron Lennon and Jeff Hendrick have also left the club due to the expiration of their contracts.
What happened in the reverse match?
Sheff Utd were in sizzling form earlier in the season, with Lundstram and Fleck scoring the goals as they walloped Burnley 3-0.
What are the odds?
The bookies are struggling to separate them and understandably so. Sheffield United are slight 17/10 favourites with Burnley priced at 19/10. The draw can be backed at 2/1.
Barring any health emergencies, the game is scheduled to take place on Monday July 6.
What time does Tottenham v Everton kick-off?
The game is scheduled for an 8pm kick-off and is the only Premier League match that day.
What is at stake?
Only a single point separates these two sides in the Premier League table and both have Europe League aspirations, so it’s certainly an important game.
Everton have played a game more than Tottenham, so you could argue their need for a win is marginally more pressing, but there is little doubt that Jose Mourinho won’t see it that way.
Where can I watch Tottenham v Everton?
It’s Monday Night Football, and that means Sky Sports.
Is Tottenham v Everton free-to-air?
It’s not, no, meaning you are either going to need a Sky Sports subscription to watch it or buy a Now TV sports pass.
What is the team news?
Tottenham are without Juan Foyth, who will likely miss the rest of the season with a knee injury. Japhet Tangananga is also missing with a stress injury to his lower back.
Richarlison is a doubt for Everton after he suffered an ankle injury against Leicester, but boss Carlo Ancelotti has dismissed it as ‘just a knock’.
What happened in the reverse match?
It was a fascinating tussle between these two sides at Goodison Park back in November and not one that is all that easy to forget. Dele Alli had handed Tottenham the lead in the second half before Son Heung-Min was sent-off shortly afterwards. Everton took full advantage, but left it late, needed a 98th-minute Cenk Tosun goal to earn an 1-1 draw.
WWE RAW Superstar Mickie James cut a promo behind the scenes on Monday Night RAW from Washington D.C. about the release of her new single “I Don’t Give A.” It is avaiable on music streaming platforms. BAY SHORE, NY — It was a team effort to make an 11-year-old Bay Shore boy’s dream come true during a youth football game Sunday. In a heartwarming moment captured during the game, the team’s captain, Jackson Wyss, who has cerebral palsy, got the chance to score his first touchdown thanks to a little help from his team.
Joe Rao, president of Bay Shore Youth Football team, said the team had been planning to let Wyss, who has been captain for about seven years, score a touchdown during the last game of the season.
Unfortunately, he is scheduled to have surgery Tuesday, so Rao and the team wanted to move up Wyss’ big moment during Sunday afternoon’s game against Lindenhurst.
He consulted the coach of the Lindenhurst team, who was “more than cooperative,” Rao said.
During the end of the fourth quarter, the ball was handed off to Wyss, who was then pushed in his wheelchair by a fellow member of his team while the Lindenhurst players dove at his feet. After scoring the touchdown, Wyss received cheers from the whole crowd.
Wyss has a limited vocabulary, Rao said, but they were still able to tell how excited he was to score his first touchdown.
“You know he’s having fun, he was screaming the whole time,” he said. “He was very happy, he was definitely excited.”
Rao described Wyss as a “good boy” and a “fighter.”
