More than 36 Syrian civilians killed in Idlib ‘by Russian and Assad regime strikes’

Dozens of civilians, including at least five children, have been killed in recent days as Russia and the Assad regime stepped up their assault on the rebel-held province of Idlib.

At least 59 civilians were killed in strikes on Monday, according to the UN, in one of the most intensive days of bombardment since the regime offensive began three months ago.

The bloodiest airstrikes fell on the market town of Maaret al-Numan, where around 40 people died, including eight women and five children, the UN said.

The explosions tore through vegetable stalls and buried civilians in rubble, leaving frantic rescue workers to dig out the bodies of men, women, and children.

“The nightmare in Idleb is getting worse,” Mark Cutts, the UN’s deputy humanitarian coordinator for Syria. “Many of the victims were women and children, some of them suffering the most horrific injuries.”

The airstrike on Maaret al-Numan was carried out by a Russian warplane, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Russia denied responsibility, saying its aircraft were “not carrying out any missions in this part of Syria”.

Assad regime forces, backed by Shia militias and Russian airpower, have been fighting since April to seize control of Idlib, the last Syrian province still in rebel hands.

But Syrian troops have so far made relatively little progress against rebel fighters, who are led by the al-Qaeda linked jihadist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).

Around 3 million civilians have sought shelter in Idlib, many after fleeing from other parts of Syria. The UN has warned of a major humanitarian catastrophe if Assad’s troops launch an all-out assault on the province.

Meanwhile, at least six people were injured in southern Turkey by a rocket fired from Syria.

The Turkish defence ministry said the rocket was fired from Kurdish-controlled territory in northeast Syria and said Turkey struck seven targets in the area in retaliation.

Western-backed Kurdish forces, known as the People’s Protection Units (YPG), control parts of northeast Syria. Turkey considers them to be part of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) terrorist group.

Topless sunbathing falls out of vogue among French women

French women used to be famed for sunbathing topless on Riviera beaches, but the practice is no longer considered chic and few are disposed to bare their breasts these days, a new survey has shown.

The 1960s idea of liberating yourself by burning your bra now seems outdated and women are more concerned about not attracting unwanted male attention, according to François Kraus, who directed the survey of 5,000 female respondents.

“You can say there’s a MeToo effect on the beach,” Mr Kraus said. The movement prompted by the sexual assault and rape allegations against Harvey Weinstein, the Hollywood producer, has had a huge effect in France.

French women have formed their own campaign against sexual harassment under the Twitter hashtag, “balancetonporc,” which translates as “denounce your pig” and encourages women to go public with the names of men who have groped, threatened or harassed them.

“A new factor is that among under 25s, there’s a fear of leering looks and 51 per cent of them fear being assaulted,” Mr Kraus said.

The number of women who regularly sunbathe topless has plunged in the past three years from 29 to 19 per cent, according to a survey by the French Institute for Public Opinion (IFOP) published on Wednesday.

In 1984, 43 per cent did so. More middle-aged women are seen topless in France than younger women. Janine Mossuz-Lavau, an academic, said that for French women in the 1960s and 70s, “going to the beach topless was a way to show that they were liberated from patriarchy, sexual restraint. But the current generation consider themselves sufficiently liberated not to have to prove it.”

Another reason for the waning popularity of topless sunbathing is fear of skin cancer after many public health campaigns have hammered home the risk of overexposure to the sun.

Michelle Leclerc, 23, said: “Le bronzage [tanning] — no longer seems innocuous the way it used to when our mums were young. You don’t want to be pestered, but also it seems a bit tacky to take your top off these days and you certainly don’t want to be photographed by someone on a mobile and the picture shared on social media. And some women are concerned they may expose themselves to  negative comments about their bodies.”

On the Costa del Sol, however, topless tanning is still all the rage. The survey showed that nearly half of Spanish women have bared their breasts on the beach.

“In Spain, displaying your body is a political statement against the puritanism of the era of [the dictator Francisco] Franco,” Mr Kraus said.

In Germany, 34 per cent of women have gone topless, compared to to 22 per cent who say they have done so at least once in France, 19 per cent in Britain and 15 per cent in Italy.

Women’s beachwear has become controversial in France. The current heatwave, with temperatures of up to 40 degrees Celsius, has reignited a row over the full body burkini swimsuits worn by some Muslim women.

“Our survey shows that the French are more uncomfortable with the burkini than with a completely naked woman,” Mr Kraus said. “There is an element of Islamophobia, but also a sort of misunderstanding as for the past 50 years, the beach has been the place where you take off your clothes.”

Beachgoers are not alone in being concerned about being pestered or photographed if they take off their tops.

Nudists who have had a special section reserved for them in a Paris park for the past two years have complained that women are being harassed by voyeurs this summer. Some have complained about “perverts hiding in bushes” at the Bois de Vincennes site.

Indian tiger population soars after conservation drive

The Indian tiger population has increased by 30% since 2014, according to encouraging figures released by the Indian Government on Monday.

The number of wild tigers has risen to 2,967 from 2,226, largely thanks to a nationwide conservation push.

Indian conservationists estimated the new figures could mean India is home to 70% of the global tiger population, in what Prime Minister Narendra Modi described as a "historic achievement."

It would mean India is on-track to honour its promise in the St Petersburg Declaration of 2010 to double its Big Cat population by 2022. As recently as 2010, the number of Indian tigers had plummeted to 1,706.

Studies have identified poaching and heightened human-tiger contact as the major causes of tiger deaths in India.

India’s human population has skyrocketed by 50% in the last 20 years, leading to greater encroachment into tiger habitats to create new homes and farmland. In some cases, tigers found exploring the new human settlements on their old land have been killed.

To create new safe habitats for the creatures, the government has designated 140 new protected areas since 2014. Community reserves – buffer zones between protected areas so that tigers can migrate and reproduce – have also more than doubled.

Significantly, technology used during the four-year long Indian tiger census was also made available to conservationists: 26,000 cameras were used to take 350,000 photos across 380,000 square kilometres of known tiger habitats, allowing rangers to individually track each tiger and identify poachers.

The Government has taken a harder line on poaching in recent years and those caught on camera are sentenced to seven years in prison.

After initial bureaucratic hurdles, a fund compensating villagers to re-settle in areas away from tigers is up-and-running, while the Government has also introduced stricter laws around tiger tourism. Travellers are no longer allowed to visit breeding sites, which had disturbed newborns and their mothers.

Local governments were also encouraged to implement new policies – for example, nine underpasses were built in Maharashtra state to allow tigers to cross roads safely.

India’s neighbour Nepal also recorded very positive results, with the number of tigers there increasing from 121 in 2010 to 235 today.

Suspect arrested after Russian Instagram influencer is found dead in a suitcase

Russian police have arrested a suspect in the murder of a 24-year-old Instagram influencer found dead in a suitcase in her Moscow apartment.

Ekaterina Karaglanova , who had recently graduated as a doctor, was known as @Katti_loves_life to her 86,000 followers on the image-sharing website.

Her body was discovered by her landlord last week after he had been contacted by her alarmed parents, who had not been able to reach their daughter for several days.

Stab wounds were evident on the body.

Police said they were investigating jealousy as a possible motive in the killing as Karaglanova had recently started a new relationship.

She was planning to celebrate her 25th birthday with a boyfriend in the Netherlands, according to Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper.

Leaked CCTV footage captured an alleged former boyfriend of Karaglanova entering the apartment building in the days around her disappearance and leaving with a suitcase and dark gloves on.

No weapon was reportedly found at the scene and police said there were no signs of a struggle in the apartment.

On Instagram Karaglanova wrote about her numerous trips to Europe, lifestyle and cosmetics.

Her profile says that she was studying dermatovenerology and was a resident at a Moscow medical school.

Her last post was about a trip to the Grecian island of Corfu.

In another post, under a photo of a bouquet of flowers, she wrote that she has been receiving such gifts from a secret admirer for several weeks.

Some of her followers likened her appearance to actress Audrey Hepburn, whose photos she posted sometimes in her feed. Last year she participated in Miss Maxim beauty pageant.

Iran seizes foreign oil tanker in Gulf smuggling fuel to some Arab states, state media reports

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps has seized a foreign oil tanker in the Gulf that was smuggling fuel to some Arab states, Iran’s state TV reported, adding that seven sailors onboard of the tanker had been detained.

"The IRGC’s naval forces have seized a foreign oil tanker in the Persian Gulf that was smuggling fuel for some Arab countries," TV quoted IRGC commander Ramezan Zirahi as saying.

"It carried 700,000 litres of fuel. Seven sailors onboard of the tanker, who are from different nationalities, were detained."

Last month, Iran seized a British tanker in the Strait of Hormuz for alleged marine violations and allowed a second one to proceed after issuing a warning.

Poisoning fears as population of Japan’s ‘cat island’ suffers drastic decline

Fears are rising that stray cats are being deliberately poisoned on Japan’s famed “cat island” after an unusually sharp decline in the feline population.

The number of cats on the remote Umashima island, some six miles from the southern city of Kitakyushu, has mysteriously fallen from 90 in 2014 to around 30 this year.

The cause of their disappearance is unknown but eyewitness reports pointed to suspicious-looking food that was left out for the animals, including cuts of fish laced with a blue-coloured substance, reported the Mainichi Shimbun.

In October 2018 and in May 2019, fish covered with what appeared to be a pharmaceutical product was found scattered in multiple locations on the island, reported the paper.

It said that formerly healthy cats had been spotted foaming at the mouth and collapsing. In September 2017, five cats were discovered dead or dying at the same time within a 30-metre radius near the harbour.

The cats have become a tourist draw to the sparsely populated island in recent years but in 2014, 79 out of 90 of the animals were neutered after complaints about the smell and nuisance of the growing population.

However, Kunihisa Sagami, director of Doubutukikin, the foundation which carried out the neutering process, expressed alarm about the sudden drop in numbers. "It’s not a normal decrease, and there’s no doubt that an outside, human element, such as animal cruelty, is causing it,” he told the Mainichi.

Masami Takeshita, head of the cat protection group Taisetsuna Nekotachi said the laced food could be used as evidence to file a criminal complaint based on the Animal Welfare act.

“I want to protect these little lives that are cherished by the community in any way I can,” she said.

Tottenham reject intriguing summer swap offer for Ndombele

Tottenham have rejected the prospect of swapping Tanguy Ndombele with Juventus midfielder Aaron Ramsey.

Ndombele has struggled to establish himself in the first team at Tottenham since joining as their club-record signing last summer.

The midfielder has started just 12 Premier League games this season and featured for only 19 minutes of their three fixtures since football resumed.

Tanguy Ndombele is Tottenham’s Taarabt MkII – only worse

Jose Mourinho was quick to dismiss concerns over his long-term future earlier this week and it has since emerged that Tottenham have already turned down an offer from Juventus for the Frenchman.

The Daily Telegraph report an offer from the Italian side of former Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey in exchange for Ndombele, which was soon ‘turned down’.

Juve ‘are willing to allow Ramsey to depart’ only a year after he joined from Arsenal on a contract worth around £400,000 a week.

Manchester United have been ‘alerted’ to the Welshman’s availability as he has played just 28 games under Maurizio Sarri.

The Old Lady might struggle to offload the player due to the restrictive nature of his wages, however, which has been complicated further by the financial impact of a global pandemic.

The likelihood of a loan with Juventus continuing to cover a percentage of his earnings has been mooted.

In an interview with The Athletic last month, Ramsey discussed the differences between the Premier League and Serie A.

“The Premier League is more end-to-end,” he says. “There’s a bit more freedom to attack and probably more spaces to exploit there. Whereas over here a lot of teams, especially against the bigger sides, drop a lot deeper into a low block and encourage you to come and break them down.

“You have to be a lot more patient, try to move the ball quicker in certain areas to encourage somebody slightly out of position.”

Treble winner questions Man Utd for not hijacking £55m move

Man United missed a trick by not making a sensational last-ditch attempt to sign Leroy Sane from bitter rivals Manchester City, according to former Old Trafford favourite Dwight Yorke.

Sane, 24, has left Manchester City for Bayern Munich in a deal which could cost the German side £54.8million.

But Yorke feels Man United should have attempted to hijack the bid to take the Germany winger across Manchester.

Will Dortmund have to yield to mighty Man United?

With plenty of speculation linking Jadon Sancho with a summer move from Borussia Dortmund to Old Trafford, it is Sane who Yorke was more keen to see in a red shirt.

Reiterating comments made last month, the Treble winner explained that “the boy Sane” would bring “balance” to the Man United attack.

“I think United were always going to try to bring in a big name as always,” he said of United’s summer recruitment plans.

“That’s always been at the forefront of the club to make sure we try to stay ahead. I looked at our attacking players at the moment and it’s really exciting for me.

“I like to balance my team a bit and if there’s one thing we are missing ideally in that team at the moment it is a really good left-footed player who can give you something.

Click Here: collingwood magpies 2019 training guernsey

“I would have hijacked the boy Sane. I think he is a terrific player and would really send a message. All that rivalry and next door stuff. He’s just something really out of the box.

“I really like him, he’s direct, he’s got pace, he’s got power, he’s at the right age and the right ingredients.”

Sane dismissed speculation linking him with a move to Old Trafford in November 2018, stating “that won’t happen at all” as “I’m on the right side”. Clearly.

Klopp defends bad-tempered interview after Liverpool defeat

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has defended his tetchy interview in the aftermath of the Reds’ 4-0 loss to Manchester City.

Liverpool were thrashed by Manchester City on Thursday in their first match since securing the Premier League title.

It was a sobering night for the newly-crowned champions but, with a 20-point lead at the top of the table, it had no damaging impact.

MAILBOX: Don’t f*cking worry, Liverpool fans, it’s ‘cheat day’…

However, Klopp was still worked up going into his post-match interview with the line of questioning from Sky Sports’ Geoff Shreeves not doing anything to cheer him up.

An irritable Klopp said: “That’s the second time you ask about attitude.

“If you want to lead this story that we are not focused in this game then do it, but I am pleased with the attitude of our team.”

Speaking about his post-match interview, Klopp told journalists: “I was not in a good mood after the game. I was not in a good mood when I went to bed or when I woke up and then at Melwood I said: ‘I’m in a really good mood’.

“Why? Because we changed things. If you lose a game, you lose a game. You never take it easy but we’ve had a bit more time to think about it.

“The problem with post-match interviews it that you have a minute go inside and then you have all the interviews.

“This game we lost in the key moments. In these moments City was better than us.

“We gave a penalty away, we conceded after a throw in, we left Joe [Gomez] alone in a situation that no player should be alone in against [Raheem] Sterling.

“We were good apart from that – good situations but we didn’t finish them off.”
