Vertonghen confirms Tottenham exit after eight years at the club

Jan Vertonghen has announced his departure from Tottenham, ending eight successful years at the club.

The Belgium defender, whose contract was extended in June until the end of the current season, has not been offered a new long-term deal and will now leave the club where he made over 300 appearances and was one of the most reliable centre-backs in the Premier League.

Vertonghen tweeted: “So my time at the club comes to an end. A sad day for many reasons.

The Premier League 2019/20 season: The winners

“I will miss the friends I’ve made here, the staff that make the club run, playing at the amazing new stadium & of course you fans.

“Thank you for all the support over the years. You’ve been amazing. We had many unbelievable memories but for now, it’s goodbye.”

Goalkeeper Michel Vorm is also departing at the end of his one-year contract.

Spurs’ players paid tribute to the pair on social media after the 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace on Sunday which booked their place in next season’s Europa League.

Harry Kane said on Twitter: “Wish nothing but the best for @jvertonghen and @mvorm with whatever is next for them. Been a pleasure sharing a dressing room and playing with them both.”

Vertonghen’s Belgium team-mate Toby Alderweireld said: “Sad to see these two amazing guys leaving the club, both great players but even better persons. We shared countless moments that I’ll never forget. Wishing you all the best for your next steps. Keep in touch.”

Boss Jose Mourinho has been quizzed on Vertonghen’s future over the last few weeks, but chose not to comment out of respect for the 33-year-old.

He said on Friday: “I think [he’s been] eight years in the club and for me eight months, something like that, it’s for Jan to be the man to speak about his future. Not for me.”

Vertonghen, who also hinted at his exit on social media without posting anything concrete, joined Spurs in 2012 from Ajax and has been an integral part of the side, proving a key player in the successive Premier League title challenges and run to the Champions League final last season.

But he has fallen out of favour this season, first under Mauricio Pochettino as his contract issue rumbled on throughout the summer transfer window, while also playing a minimal role under Mourinho.

He was open to the possibility of staying in north London, but his future now lies elsewhere and he has previously spoken about the desire to move to a new country and play in the Champions League, with Spain and Italy possible destinations.

Neville urges Man Utd to invest £170m in new signings

Gary Neville thinks Man Utd “need to invest” £170m this summer, like they did under Jose Mourinho, but “do it correctly this time”.

The Red Devils secured their place in next season’s Champions League with a 2-0 victory over Leicester securing a third-place finish after a remarkable turnaround.

Man Utd are unbeaten in the Premier League since the restart, winning six of their nine matches and picking up 21 of a possible 27 points on offer.

16 Conclusions: Leicester 0-2 Manchester United

The addition of Bruno Fernandes in January certainly made a big difference and Man Utd are likely to dip into the transfer market again this summer.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville said: “They (United’s starting XI) were absolutely done in with 20 minutes to go and that just demonstrates that they need more players in the squad.

Neville added: “The last time United finished in the top three they spent £170million under Jose Mourinho that summer and obviously didn’t invest it as wisely as they have this last year.

“I think United need to invest that money again but do it correctly this time to get anywhere need Liverpool and City. That squad needs improving, that team needs improving.

“They need to improve the first XI, first and foremost. That’s not to the detriment of any of the players that have played today. There are players who were out there who are good enough to be part of the squad that can still compete if you’re going to play 55, 60 games in a season.

Neville continued: “It’s about making sure you get players in that want to play for the right club, who are coming for the right reasons.”

Hasenhuttl: ‘What Southampton did was unbelievable’

Ralph Hasenhuttl said Southampton’s achievements this season have been “unbelievable” after they finished in 11th.

Understandably tipped for relegation following October’s 9-0 St Mary’s shellacking at the hands of Leicester, Saints have reaped the benefits of sticking with their Austrian manager and his principles.

Saints have lost just once since play resumed after the coronavirus suspension and ended the season in 11th thanks to Sunday’s 3-1 win against the Blades.

Having seen John Lundstram put the visitors ahead, Adams’ second-half brace turned things around before Danny Ings wrapped up victory from the penalty spot.

“It’s not only hope but also a confidence that what we are doing is the right thing, especially with the ball,” Hasenhuttl said. “I saw today a team who was really patient and waiting for the right moment.

“The second half was a fantastic performance against deep defending.

“We deserved to win 3-1. It can even be higher normally.

“It’s not easy to create that many chances against such a good defence.

“I don’t think they conceded a lot of goals this season, so with the ball it was one of our best performances this season.

“It’s amazing, especially after lockdown. What we did was unbelievable.

“The way we play in the moment means it’s not a coincidence we are winning games.

“We are very strong and if we keep working like this and come back fitter after the break… and you can see the team is learning quick.

“Wins give you self-confidence, but we must also play like this when we have pressure.

“The players are really enjoying it.”

Hasenhuttl was not willing to talk about the future of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg after omitting the former captain from his matchday squad, but the Saints boss was far more forthcoming about improving Adams.

“It was absolutely important for him to score now after the break,” Hasenhuttl said of the forward.

“We always knew that he could help us in the future. It seems he gets more and more adapted to our game.”
