Eminem, le retour [ou pas… MISE A JOUR]

Solskjaer launches defence of ‘best goalkeeper in the world’ De Gea

David de Gea “is the best goalkeeper in the world” despite his clanger against Tottenham, according to Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Spaniard faced heavy criticism over the weekend, especially from Roy Keane, after De Gea failed in his attempts to keep out Steven Bergwijn’s first-half strike as the Red Devils came from a goal down to draw 1-1.

The Dutchman burst through the Man Utd defence and shot straight at De Gea, but it squirmed in and United needed an 81st-minute penalty from Bruno Fernandes to earn a deserved point.

BIG MIDWEEK: Spurs v West Ham, Pogba, Liverpool, Lampard

Speaking at a pre-match press conference ahead of the Red Devils’ clash with Sheffield United, Solskjaer said: “David is the best goalkeeper in the world, he’s conceded two goals in the last seven he’s played for us, there are City, Chelsea, Tottenham, Everton, two goals in seven games, we’ve gone on a run and the two goals.

“The Everton one is a freak one, this one he can’t save it, he makes great saves, wins games for us and he’s still the best goalkeeper the world. David is working really hard, he isn’t making errors you see time and time again. He’s working hard in training, I’m pleased with his work.

“He’s been at United nine years now, next year is his 10th season. He’s had some fantastic seasons and I don’t think it’s a bad run if you concede two goals in seven games against the teams we’ve played. He’s made matchwinning saves, he saved a point for us against Tottenham with the save, mentally a very strong keeper but I speak to him every day, that’s fine.”

Middlesbrough turn to Warnock after sacking Woodgate

Middlesbrough head coach Jonathan Woodgate has been sacked and replaced by the vastly-experienced Neil Warnock as the club battles relegation from the Sky Bet Championship.

The Teessiders parted company with the former England international on Tuesday morning three days after a damaging 3-0 home defeat by Swansea.

A club statement said: “MFC can confirm that head coach Jonathan Woodgate has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect.

MAILBOX: Enough’s enough. Give Arsenal the protection they deserve…

“Jonathan was relieved of his role on Tuesday morning and will be replaced by the experienced Neil Warnock.

“Warnock will assume responsibility immediately.

“The club would like to place on record its thanks to Jonathan for all his work in the role of head coach.”

Former Middlesbrough defender Woodgate, who was already on the coaching staff at the cub’s Rockliffe Park training headquarters, was handed the reins by chairman Steve Gibson in June last year after impressing during the interview process.

Woodgate took charge of 41 games, but won only nine of them and, with eight Championship fixtures remaining, his side sit in 21st place in the table, clear of the bottom three only on goal difference.

The widely-travelled Warnock, whose lengthy managerial career has included spells at Sheffield United, Crystal Palace, QPR and Leeds, has been out of the game since he left Cardiff in November.

Ex-Arsenal man Anelka makes surprise choice as he picks best bosses

Former Arsenal and Chelsea striker Nicolas Anelka has named Sam Allardyce and Arsene Wenger as his two best managers

Anelka played for some of the biggest clubs in world football, including Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool, racking up 665 appearances in all competitions throughout his career.

The Frenchman has played under some of the game’s great managers like Carlo Ancelotti, Guus Hiddink and Vincente del Bosque but Anelka has named Allardyce and former Arsenal boss Wenger as his two best bosses.

BIG MIDWEEK: Spurs v West Ham, Pogba, Liverpool, Lampard

“For me, I take into consideration football, attitude, my understanding with the coach, mentality and how he used me on the field and because of this there is only two names: Big Sam and Arsene Wenger,” Anelka told Bolton’s official website. “They knew how to use my qualities to get the best out of me.”

Speaking about his time working under Allardyce, Anelka added:  “I loved it. I loved everything about him! The game preparation, the games, the football style, his coaching, and the relationship he had with the players, his way to think about modern football using recovery more than anything else.”

Anelka continued: “For me, we had the best game preparation at Bolton and Chelsea based on recovery before and after the game. We had lots of massages, ice baths and hot baths and I could feel the difference. We were ready to fight.

“Big Sam’s training sessions were very light but intense. He made sure we had fresh legs for the games and that we were ready to give everything and mostly be ready to fight because every game was a war.”

Smith wants more protection for ‘most fouled’ Grealish

Dean Smith wants more protection for Jack Grealish after the Aston Villa skipper set a new Premier League record.

Midfielder Grealish has been fouled 140 times this season, the most since statistical records began 22 years ago, with eight games still to play.

He was again targeted in Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Chelsea which kept Villa rooted in the relegation zone.

Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha has been fouled 98 times, 42 less than Grealish this term, and Smith wants his captain to be given some help.

“Jack has had a marker on him all season, he’s had about 50 fouls more than anyone else in the league,” he said, ahead of Wednesday’s trip to Newcastle.

“The most surprising stat will be that there’s only about five bookings for those 140 fouls.

“There is nothing Jack can do other than wanting to keep getting on the ball and running at them in the final third. The officials probably need to protect him more for sure.

“He’s got bruises all over his shins and his side. But he loves playing the game, playing football and he loves Aston Villa, he’ll keep going.

“One of the biggest advantages you lose is the influence supporters can have over officials.

“Chelsea certainly tried to nullify our most creative player and there was only one caution in the last five minutes. That influence on officials (from fans) is certainly what is lacking in the home games.”

Villa are second bottom and without a win in any competition since January, after the enforced break due to the coronavirus crisis.

Smith was pleased with their performance on Sunday, despite losing to Chelsea, and feels Villa are a different team than before the shutdown.

He said: “We came out of the last two games before we paused against Southampton and Leicester having conceded a host of chances and looked easier to play against.

“Now I thought we looked difficult to play against and Frank (Lampard) said that.

“They have a quality team, outside Liverpool and Man City they are as good as anyone we have played.

“We are in a better place, certainly defensively, than when the season paused.”

Update: Zanardi still in stable but serious condition

Alex Zanardi remains in a stable but serious condition three days after the hand-bike accident in Italy that left the racer with traumatic head injuries.

Zanardi was airlifted to the Policlinico Le Scotte in Siena late on Friday afternoon where he underwent surgery for skull and face fractures following a crash in a relay race on a road in Tuscany.

According to several reports, Zanardi crossed into the wrong lane and into the path of an oncoming truck, which was unable to avoid him.

On Sunday, Zanardi’s doctors said the driver’s condition was not life threatening but insisted the “neurological picture” remained serious. The 53-year-old Italian is in an induced coma and on a ventilator.
