Man Utd legend Scholes still holds grudge against one ‘big baby’

Man Utd legend Paul Scholes has accused Didier Deschamps of screaming “like a big girl” to get him booked in the 1999 Champions League semi-final against Juventus.

That yellow card meant Scholes missed the final which Man Utd – who were also missing Roy Keane – went on to win in dramatic fashion against Bayern Munich, with two goals in injury time securing a famous triumph.

The Red Devils beat Juventus 4-3 on aggregate in a thrilling semi-final clash but Scholes still thinks he was hard done by with the second leg booking.

On how he felt about missing the final, Scholes told a Goal in One podcast: “You just deal with it don’t you.

“I was gutted at the time but nothing you can do about it. I tackled Deschamps and I’ve seen it a few times, I don’t think it was a foul to be honest with you. It was right in front of the ref, he screamed like a big girl, like a big baby which didn’t help me.

“It got me booked and I missed the final but I may not have played in the final, you never know. We had massive games. Big games against Spurs to win the league, the FA cup final the next Saturday and then the Champions League final. I was devastated to miss it, of course I was. Roy was as well.

“But it didn’t matter who was missing, we still had the capability in the squad, someone can fill in and do just as good a job.”

Agent: Chances of Luiz being at Arsenal next season ‘very high’

David Luiz has no intention of leaving Arsenal with the chances of the Brazilian being at the Emirates Stadium next season “very high”.

A report on Wednesday claimed that Luiz only signed a deal for an initial 12 months and not the two years reported at the time of his £8m move from Chelsea last summer.

Sky Sports added that the Brazilian will leave Arsenal this summer with Luiz ‘out of contract next month and no negotiations over a new deal planned.’

A report on Sunday even claimed that the cost of his one-year deal at Arsenal was closer to £24m when payments to ‘intermediaries’ (£6m) and Luiz’s £10m salary are taken into account.

Despite rumours Luiz won’t be there next season, his agent Kia Joorabchian insists there is a “very high” chance that the Brazilian will stay at the Emirates Stadium.

“He’s very happy at Arsenal,” Joorabchian told Sky Sports. “He has an extremely good relationship with both the coach and the sporting director. He has good relationships all throughout the club, right up to the owner. He respects everybody.

“These contract situations, these renewals, if he stays or if he goes… will all sort themselves out when we get back to some kind of ‘new’ normal [after coronavirus].

“David will sit down with Arsenal before the season begins, have his conversations and they will both decide if he will stay or not. That will come before the season starts. The chances are very high [of Luiz being at Arsenal next season].

“There is no desire to leave. But again, we are going to live in a ‘new’ normal, we will have to see what Arsenal’s position will be. But I believe there is a wish from both sides to continue.”

Man Utd reach loan agreement to keep Ighalo until Jan 2021

Man Utd have reached an agreement to keep Shanghai Shenhua striker Odion Ighalo at the club until January 2021, according to his agent

Ighalo made his shock deadline-day switch from Shanghai Shenhua in January and the ex-Watford striker has impressed the Old Trafford faithful.

The 30-year-old has scored four goals in three starts for the club he has supported since childhood but adding to his eight appearances has been complicated by the coronavirus crisis.

The Daily Mail claimed last Monday that Man Utd had ‘hit a brick wall’ in their attempts to extend his loan with Shanghai Shenhua rejecting ‘United’s requests to keep Ighalo at Old Trafford for another three months’.

Instead, Shanghai were apparently ‘demanding that the Nigerian striker rejoins them to prepare for the start of the delayed Chinese Super League season’.

However, his agent, Atta Aneke, has told Nettavisen that Ighalo is close to extending his loan, he said: “We are nearing an agreement with Manchester United on an extended loan. The agreement will mean that Ighalo will remain with them until January 2021.”

When asked when the agreement would be ready, Aneke claimed “during the day” yesterday with Nettavisen adding that there has been ‘no discussion of an option in the agreement where United can make the agreement permanent’.

Ronaldo names Liverpool star and target in five best players

Ronaldo ranks Liverpool striker Mo Salah and imaginary transfer target Kylian Mbappe among his five favourite current players.

The legendary Brazilian has a clear “number one”, followed by players from the Premier League, La Liga and Ligue Un.

He also feels “the best players are in Spain, or at least, most of them”.

Top ten players football deserved to see without injuries

“Messi, of course,” he told AS of his favourite player. “He is number one, he is a talent that will take 20 or 30 years to see something similar.

“I also like Salah, Hazard, Neymar, I love watching him play.”

Salah has 20 goals in 40 appearances for Liverpool this season, and sits joint-third in the Premier League Golden Boot stakes as he seeks to become only the third player in history to win three in a row.

Mbappe, who is destined to be forever linked with a fanciful move to join the Egyptian on Merseyside, has an even more impressive 30 goals in 33 games for PSG.

Ronaldo is fond of the fifth player on his list but was keen to play down comparisons.

“Many people say that he looks like me,” he said. “He has a lot of speed, he finishes well, he has great movements, he hits excellent with both legs, he has an incredible stride.

“We have similar things, but I never liked the comparisons, especially between players of different generations, because the situations are different.

“It is not clear that the Premier League is better than La Liga. Perhaps in television income the clubs receive more, but the best players are in Spain, or at least, most of them.”
