Boston, MA.
‰ÛÒThe Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) today announced that registration for
the third annual B.A.A. 5K opens on Wednesday, March 2 at 10:00 a.m. Online
registration will take place at www.baa.org/races/5k, and the field is
limited to the first 5,000 entrants. The race will take place on Sunday, April
17 at 8:00 a.m. and provides participants with an opportunity to cross the
famous Boston Marathon finish line on Boylston Street. New for 2011, the B.A.A.
is offering a $30,000 prize purse for the race‰Ûªs top finishers with $5,000 each
to the top male and female runner.

The 3.1-mile course starts at
Copley
Square, and passes historical landmarks such as the
Massachusetts State House, the Bull and Finch Pub (the inspiration for
‰ÛÏCheers‰Û), the Boston Common, and the Boston Public
Garden. The race is an
energizing prelude to Monday‰Ûªs Boston Marathon, and marathoners have come out to
support line the 5K participants in previous years.

‰ÛÏThe B.A.A. 5K has been a well-received
addition to Boston Marathon weekend, and we‰Ûªre delighted to showcase the Back
Bay and Beacon Hill neighborhoods with this
event,‰Û said Tom Grilk, executive director of the Boston Athletic Association.
‰ÛÏWe‰Ûªve opened the finish of our Marathon course
to runners of shorter distances and offered them a chance to shine on one of our
sport‰Ûªs biggest weekends. We hope that some of our Marathon weekend visitors from out of town will take part
and see more of our city. With elite runners now competing for a $30,000 prize
purse, we‰Ûªve added a new facet which brings additional interest and a bit more
drama to the marathon weekend.‰Û

In 2010, nearly 5,000 entrants from 31
countries and 49 states crossed the finish line at the B.A.A. 5K. Last year‰Ûªs
men‰Ûªs winner Josh Cox lunged across the line in 14:30, narrowly missing Jarrod
Shoemaker‰Ûªs course record (14:29) from the previous year. Jennifer Campbell, of
Newmarket, New Hampshire won the women‰Ûªs race in a time
of 16:50, establishing the course record by 44 seconds. For more information on
the 2011 B.A.A. 5K, please visit the B.A.A. web site at
www.baa.org/races/5k

The B.A.A. 5K precedes the B.A.A.
Invitational Mile, also on April 17 and which includes two professional and four
youth races featuring student athletes from the eight cities and towns along the
Boston Marathon course. These mile races are spectator-friendly events that
showcase local as well as international talent as the competitors run laps
around a city block at the Boston Marathon finish line.

About the
B.A.A.:
Established in 1887, the Boston Athletic Association

the Boston Marathon, the world’s most prestigious and oldest
continually run marathon. Since the inaugural race in 1897, the Boston Marathon has been
the pinnacle for distance running worldwide, a position which was reinforced in
1986 with the help of principal sponsor John Hancock Financial. In 2006, the
Boston Marathon joined the Bank of
America Chicago Marathon, the Berlin Marathon, the Virgin London Marathon, and the ING New York
City Marathon to form the World Marathon Majors.

VT’s Kasie Enman Wins World Mtn. Running Championship

USA Wins Double Gold at World Mountain Running Championships

USA Wins Double Gold at World Mountain Running Championships

Max King and Kasie Enman Crowned World Champions in Tirana, Albania

Tirana, Albania ‰ÛÓ September 11 ‰ÛÓ The USA set the bar at the 27th
World Mountain Running Championships held today, September 11, in
Tirana, Albania, showcased by the gold-medal performances of
Huntingdon, Vermont’s Kasie Enman and Bend, Oregon’s Max King.

“In
my nine years as team leader, I’ve never been more proud of our
athletes than I am today,” said Richard Bolt, “Kasie and Max’s
performances blew me away. They made winning a World Championship look
easy.”

“This is the first time I
have represented the U.S. in a World Mountain Running Championship,”
said Enman, “I’m very excited. I did not expect to win.”

With her victory Enman
becomes the first senior woman from the U.S. to earn an individual gold
medal. She led the senior women to a fourth place finish. Her time was
40:39 over the 8.59 kilometer course. She was followed by Megan Lund in
12th place with a time of 43:56, Michele Suszek in 21st place with a time of 44:48, and Brandy Erholtz in 26th place with a time of 45:56.

“It’s an historic day
for our women,” said women’s team manager Ellen Miller, “Kasie’s
victory honors the past 17 years of U.S. women’s mountain running.”

For King, this was his
second consecutive appearance at the World Mountain Running
Championships, and he bettered last year’s 16th place
performance with a decisive victory today. “I’m tired, but I feel very
good,” said King, “This is my first individual medal (last year’s senior
men’s team took the silver), and I’m proud to have it in an up/down
year especially in Albania.”

King’s
gold medal becomes only the second gold for a U.S. male. Jay Johnson,
owner of Fleet Feet Sports in Boulder, Colorado, previously won gold
for Team USA in 1989 and since that time, Johnson has been an ardent
supporter of Team USA.

About his gold medal
performance King said, “It was a good course for me having both the
hard technical uphill and the fast and somewhat technical downhill. I
had no idea I was in the lead until I crossed the finish line. The
Ugandan runner was 30 seconds ahead of me at the top of the third climb
and I passed him with about 800 meters to go. I didn’t think that he
was the one I was trying to catch, I thought it was a lapped runner.”

King led the men’s team
to a fourth place finish with his time of 52:06 over the 12.7 kilometer
course. He was followed by teammates Joseph Gray in eleventh place
with a time of 55:33, Ryan Woods in 49th place in 1:01:51, Matt Byrne in 51st place in 1:01:58, Tommy Manning in 79th place in 1:08:10, and Jared Scott in 96th place in 1:20:21.

“It was strong team finish, but we were obviously disappointed that we didn’t finish in the medals,” said King.

Prior to the senior
races, the junior men and women competed. In the junior men’s 8.59
kilometer race, University of Richmond sophomore Ryan Lee posted an
impressive 11th place finish. He was followed by fellow Spyder Billy Fayette in 28th place and Oliver Bear Don’t Walk IV in 54th place. The junior men finished tenth.

The junior women raced
4.49 kilometers. Krisztina Dearborn, a sophomore at Central Connecticut
State University, finished in 24th place followed by Johns Hopkins sophomore Lara Shegoski in 29th place, and University of Richmond freshman Clare Moretz in 30th place.

“I’m tremendously proud
of the efforts of our junior athletes today,” said Paul Kirsch, manager
of the junior team, “They raced against the best in the world and held
their own. I’m grateful to their college coaches who realize the
tremendous opportunity this gives a collegiate athlete to race on a
world stage.”

Youth Trumps Weather at Houston Marathon

HOUSTON
– Twenty-year-old Merima Mohammed of Ethiopia overcame leg problems and
cold, wet conditions to run the second-fastest ever women’s race at
Sunday’s Chevron Houston Marathon, while fellow countryman, twenty-two
year old Bazu Worku, ran away with the men’s title.

Course
record-holder Feyisa Lilesa of Ethiopia defended his title in the men’s
Aramco Houston Half Marathon and Mamitu Daska, the 2011 Chevron Houston
Marathon champion, won the women’s crown. Daska is the first-ever woman
to win the marathon and the half marathon at Houston.

“The
conditions were challenging for everybody, but it is a testament to the
athletes we attract that we had such great performances,” said Wade
Morehead, Executive Director of the Houston Marathon Committee.
“Despite the bad conditions, we had tremendous support from our
sponsors, spectators and volunteers.”

Mohammed
ran the first half of the race with Buzunesh Deba (ETH) and Meskerem
Assefa (ETH) and that pack stayed together through 33km, when Mohammed
made a strong move and broke away. She stretched her lead to 47 seconds
over Deba by the 40km mark and crossed the line in 2:23:27, missing the
course record by 23 seconds. Deba finished as the runner-up in 2:24:26,
which is the fifth-fastest time in race history. Assefa finished third
in her marathon debut in 2:25:17.

“I
had a problem with my left leg,” Mohammed told reporters through a
translator while massaging her left calf. “It was hurting badly. It was
a very painful situation.”

Worku,
who had been running in a pack of nine early in the race, came through
the half at 65:25 with five others. But by 25km, he had opened up a 50
second lead over Solomon Molla. Worku continued to stretch that lead
with every mile and finished in 2:10:17, winning by more than
two-and-a-half minutes. Teferi Balcha claimed runner-up honors 2:12:50,
with Molla third at 2:14:37.

Lilesa
ran side-by-side with Deriba Merga until the pair entered the home
stretch, where Lilesa used his superior speed to win in 61:54. Merga
was second at 62:00 and Kenya’s Wilson Erupe made a late surge to take
third in 62:12.

Daska
took command early in the race, leading through 5km in 16:18, and then
doubled her margin by the 10km mark, clocking 32:42. At 15km, she had a
1:27 lead over Caroline Kilel of Kenya and her margin of victory was
2:05 when she crossed the line at 69:53, the fifth-fastest time in race
history. Kilel finished as the runner-up for the second year in a row,
finishing in 71:58 and Hellen Jemutai, also of Kenya, was third in
72:34.

Chasing
the American prize purse, presented by Marathonguide.com, Andrew
Carlson and Tera Moody were the first U.S. finishers in the Chevron
Houston Marathon. Carson was seventh overall at 2:17:16 and Moody was
sixth in 2:39:10.

“The
extra prize incentive from Marathonguide.com was a great addition to
our event,” said Brant Kotch, Race Director of the Chevron Houston
Marathon. “Along with the substantial support we receive from Chevron
and Aramco, this kind of financial help can only enhance our
competitive fields.”

The
top Americans in the Aramco Houston Half Marathon were newly-minted
U.S. citizen Shadrack Biwott, who finished fourth in 62:23, and Lisa
Uhl, who took sixth in 73:38.

One Athletic Drought Down, Plenty Out There

WITH MURRAY'S WIN AT WIMBLEDON, ATHLETICS DROUGHTS COME TO MIND
By Chris Lotsbom

CLEVEDON, ENGLAND (09-Jul) -- On the seventh day of the seventh month,
seventy-seven years after the last Briton won the Men's Wimbledon Championship
title, Scotland tennis ace Andy Murray captured the winner's trophy on Sunday,
ending one of the longest victory droughts in sporting history.

"I understand the match, how everyone else wants to see a British winner at Wimbledon,"
he told the BBC moments after winning, looking up to the capacity crowd. "I hope you guys enjoyed it, I tried my best."

With the whole of Great Britain watching, Murray defeated top-ranked Serbian Novak Djokovic 6-4, 7-5, 6-4. More importantly, he fulfilled the nation's dreams of
once again owning the top spot at the famed All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, something which hadn't happened since Fred Perry won in 1936.

"It's hard. It's really hard. You know, for the last four or five years, it's been very, very tough, very stressful," Murray told ESPN.com, describing the
effects of being a British contender at the event. "It's just kind of everywhere you go. It's so hard to avoid everything because of how big this event is, but
also because of the history and no Brit having won [in 77 years]."

While watching the match on Wimbledon's pristine Centre Court, thousands tweeted about history being made in front of their eyes, including many in the athletics
 world.

"Date w destiny. Great stuff. happy [sic] 4 all of Britain," said New York Road Runners CEO and President Mary Wittenberg.

"@Andy_Murray Well done mate!!! #LEGEND," wrote double Olympic gold medalist and fellow Briton Mo Farah.

As Djokovic hit his final backhand into the net and Murray raised his hands to the heavens, all the land cheered. Brought to tears, the first Briton in three
quarters of a century had scored the victory.

"It's history. We haven't seen this in our lifetime," said Catherine Batchelor, who took in the match with friends here.

While watching the duel come to a close, thoughts of other sporting droughts came to mind, particularly in athletics. It's been 28 years since an American --male
or female-- has won the Boston Marathon (1985, Lisa Larsen Weidenbach); ten years since Great Britain's Paula Radcliffe set the women's marathon world record of
2:15:25 (2003); 14 years exactly to the day (July 7, 1999) since Hicham El Guerrouj set the mile world record in Rome, timing 3:43.13.

"The end to the wait at Wimbledon...next up - American women winners-NY & Boston marathons...?!" asked Wittenberg in a tweet, receiving six retweets and six
favorites.

For years athletes have talked about snapping athletics streaks like Murray, much more meaningful than simply being crowned champion. With droughts also come a
pressure unlike any other, a feeling that motivates athletes and provides frustration for both athlete and nation alike. For Shalane Flanagan, this was evident
following this year's Boston Marathon, where she finished fourth.

"I've been thinking about this moment and running in this race for a really long time, so I'm extremely happy to have fulfilled a lifelong goal of mine," said
Flanagan on the verge of tears. "But I dreamt of winning. I dreamt of a laurel wreath on my head, and it didn't happen, but that's the reason why dreams or goals
 are big, and they're hard.

"The hardest part about Boston is that the Bostonians want it just as bad as you do," Flanagan --a native of Massachusetts-- said in April. "We want to be that
person. We want to be the next Joanie," referring to Joan Benoit Samuelson, the second-to-last American women's champion in Boston.

According to his book "14 Minutes," drought is what even spurred Alberto Salazar to begin the Oregon Project, hoping to get Americans back to the podium in
marathons and athletics. In 2012, Salazar partially fulfilled that goal, aiding Galen Rupp to his 10,000m silver medal at the London Olympics.

It's near impossible to say which athletics drought will end next. But one thing's for sure: they are always on athletes' minds. As shown by Murray at Wimbledon,
nothing's too far out of reach, as long an athlete has the will, hope, patience, and determination.

"I didn't always feel it was going to happen," Murray, runner-up in 2012, told ESPN.com. "It's incredibly difficult to win these events. I don't think that's
that well-understood sometimes. It takes so much hard work, mental toughness, to win these sort of tournaments."

The same can be said for races; patience can be a virtue.

“The
B.A.A. has a rich history of athletic excellence, both in terms of
events and club membership, and I look forward to developing the next
generation of top Americans who will
compete wearing the Unicorn,” said Mahon. “The athletes who will run
for the B.A.A. in this program will represent one of this country’s
oldest and most prestigious running clubs, and our group
will be the newest contributor to the already strong legacy of running
in
Boston.”

Mahon officially begins with the B.A.A. in October, and the program will launch shortly thereafter.
It is anticipated that the first athletes will join the club by January 2014.

“The
B.A.A. is committed to supporting running for both participation and
performance, and we are pleased to introduce this program which will
provide opportunities at the highest
level of our sport,” said Tom Grilk, B.A.A. Executive Director.
“Terrence, our new athletes and this program reaffirm our mission to
promote the sport. This performance group will focus on elite
competition; through
the program, we will inspire up-and-coming runners both locally and
nationally. We also hope that these athletes will serve to inspire an
increased community focus on the benefits of fitness for everyone.”

Athletes
who become part of the program will receive a range of benefits as the
club seeks to develop Americans into top runners at several distances.
Athletes will compete in track
and field or in road races, and Mahon aspires to have club athletes
compete in national championships, the U.S. Olympic Trials, the IAAF
World Championships and the Olympic Games.
