SJU’s Becker Earns NWCA All-America Honor

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John’s University senior Noah Becker (Browerville, Minn.) was named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-America first team on Wednesday, April 8.

In previous seasons, the NWCA awarded All-America honors to the top eight wrestlers in each weight class at the NCAA Championships. This year’s All-America honors were split into three teams, based on each wrestler’s overall body of work through the regional tournaments and up to the national meet.

Becker was set to make his second national tournament appearance as the No. 3 seed at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships March 13-14, but his career came to an end after the NCAA’s canceled all winter and spring championships due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Becker ended the 2019-20 season with a 22-2 record and a second-place finish Feb. 28-29 at the NCAA Upper Midwest Regional.

He totaled a 93-27 career record, including a 49-6 mark over the last two seasons. The three-time NWCA Scholar All-American is a global business leadership major with a 3.35 GPA.

Does Lampard want to make West Ham man into new Terry?

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is reportedly keen to sign West Ham star Declan Rice, but to play in the heart of his defence.

Rice has earned a reputation as one of the brightest young talents in the Premier League, following his performances as a holding midfielder for the Hammers.

However, the 21-year-old England interntaional, who has also been linked with Manchester United, started out as a centre-back and that is where Lampard is said to see his future.

Rice spent eight years in the Chelsea academy before leaving for the Hammers in 2014, and transfer expert Ian McGarry (expert? Really?) claims that Lampard sees Rice as the “vocal presence” at the back that his team have been lacking.

Chelsea currently sit third in the Premier League table ahead of the resumption next week, but the Blues have conceded 39 goals in their 29 matches, more than the likes of Wolves, Sheffield United, Arsenal and Crystal Palace.

Rice could be the perfect centre-back partner for Antonio Rudiger, who Mario Melchiot claims Lampard should be building his team around.

And McGarry said on the Transfer Window Podcast, as cited in the Daily Express: “Another young player who’s making waves and is attracting attention is Declan Rice, the West Ham player, who started his time as an academy player at Chelsea and indeed is very much fancied by Chelsea with regards to a return.

“Our information at the Transfer Window podcast is that Frank Lampard’s feeling about the player is that he could become potentially a commanding presence in Chelsea’s defence, which of course would be taking him out of the defensive midfield role he currently fills for West Ham United, but he did start as a centre-half and has both the physique and ability to play there.

“But of course, if you’ve got a player who can play in two positions then why not?

“He’s currently under contract until 2024 at the London Stadium but he’s only 21, has seven caps already for England, again he fills all of those kind of box-ticking factors that we talk about with regards to young, English, talented, good with the ball at his feet, reads the game well etc.

“We’ve talked a lot about Lampard’s desire to have a vocal presence in his defence which he feels is lacking.

“Obviously he played for his entire time at Chelsea with John Terry who was very much that ‘Captain, Leader, Legend’ phrase.”

McManaman tips one club to tempt Klopp from Liverpool

Steve McManaman claims Bayern Munich are the one club who could tempt Jurgen Klopp with a move away from Liverpool.

Klopp has been the boss at Anfield since 2015 and has transformed the Reds into a dominant force in Europe once again.

Having won the Champions League last season, they now sit 25 points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table, and are nailed on to win their first league title since 1990.

FEATURE: Three questions for each of the Premier League’s Big Six

But McManaman claims that the German could be persuaded to return to his homeland, should Bayern come calling.

“I think he really adores Liverpool and the Premier League,” he exclusively told Daily Star Sport.

“But you could see him going back to Germany and managing Bayern Munich.

“The way that club is run – and the way German managers are treated there – you wouldn’t rule it out. A few years ago it looked like Bayern were on their last legs.

“But now, along with the more experienced players, they’ve got a plethora of youngsters who are hungry.

“I’m not sure Klopp has any desire to manage Real Madrid or Barcelona and I don’t see why he’d go to La Liga though.

“They don’t have the aura that they did when Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo were doing battle every week. There is also all the politics behind the scenes at Barca with the board and players.

“Real is a different scenario. They need to refresh their squad and they are bringing in young players like Vinicius Junior – but they aren’t ready yet.”

Van Dijk ‘so angered’ by Haaland he cut interview short

Virgil van Dijk was reportedly so angry after Liverpool’s victory over RB Salzburg that he walked away from an interview.

The Reds won the game 4-3 at Anfield, with both Takumi Minamino – signed on the back of his displays – and Erling Haaland producing impressive performances.

And former Norway striker Jan Aage Fjortoft explains that when he tried to push the Liverpool centre-back to comment on Haaland, Van Dijk walked away.

The Dutch defender was visibly frustrated with the way he and his team had defended.

Fjortoft told Blood Red podcast: “The first time I saw him [Haaland] live was at Anfield when he came on and I was amazed that this young kid created so much space.

“He scored one goal but he could have had three or four – he was unbelievable. I was amazed how he created space and how I define that is how his runs are wise and experienced.

“After the game, I interviewed Van Dijk, who I always like to interview because he is a gentleman, and I said ‘I have to ask you about the Norwegian, Erling Haland’.

“And he just said: ‘Well, we won the game’. So I said ‘Yes, but what do you think about him?’. “Van Dijk said: ‘I didn’t see a lot of him’ and he was a bit angry because there was some mistakes done.

“And I said ‘It’s a good sign for a striker when a defender says he didn’t see him!’ – and then he just went away, Van Dijk.”

Van Dijk features in our very magnificent V-Team

Haaland completed a transfer to Dortmund shortly after the defeat by Liverpool, and he continues to be linked with a big-money move to the Premier League, after further impressing in the Bundesliga.

Fjortoft added: “At Dortmund, he has players like Julian Brandt who sees [his perfectly timed runs].

“He would be a good fit for any club and for Liverpool he is good – when he speaks about United, he speaks about Leeds United!

“I think he’ll end up in England at some stage, but he is 19 and we should make space to have five games without scoring.

“We should just wait and see how he is doing – he is at the right place now.”

Mercedes ‘looking to mid-to-long term’ with driver choice

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has revealed that he’s adjusting his approach to driver line-up when it comes to the next few seasons.

Having vehemently denied that Mercedes might pull out of F1 in the next year or two, Wolff stated that in fact they were already looking to the longer-term future – which could influence who drives for the team in 2021 and beyond.

Lewis Hamilton is still in pole position to retain his seat at Brackley, with Wolff telling Sky Sports F1 that the reigning world champion is expected to quickly sign a new deal once contract negotiations begin.

“We need to make sure our short-term future is in good hands, and there are no better hands out there than Lewis’,” Wolff told Martin Brundle. “The moment Lewis touches down back in Europe we will carve out what needs to be carved out.

“We’re keeping in contact with each other regularly,” he continued. “We have been in different parts of the world but very much keep ourselves in the loop of what is happening.”

Wolff explained why he didn’t feel there was any rush to sign a new contract with Hamilton.

“If you trust, and I think our relationship is based on trust, you know that your partner is not going to let you down,” he said. “Formula 1 is a tough business, but I think what this team does differently is that loyalty and trust are important values. And we live by them every day.

“We have been together for eight years now and the agreements don’t need to be reinvented. There is a good basis and I believe we could come to a point pretty swiftly.”

However his follow-up comments perhaps augur less well for Valtteri Bottas, who has been with the team since 2017 albeit on one-year contracts.

“Our mid-to-long-term strategy is being considered,” Wolff stated, suggesting that Mercedes is already into ‘succession planning’ with regard to who will eventually take over from Hamilton.

At 30-years-old, Bottas faces significant threats from bright young talents, including Mercedes protege George Russell who earned praise for his drives with the Williams team during his debut F1 season in 2019

Wolff also helps manage the career of Esteban Ocon. Despite the French driver’s switch to Renault for 2020, he’s another rising star in the frame for any future vacancy with the Silver Arrows outfit.

Brundle suggested that Mercedes were “spoiled for talent”, but Wolff insisted that the team had to stay on its toes in the face of increasing challenges elsewhere on the grid.

“Yes but we must not be complacent,” he said. “Red Bull has two very talented drivers, Ferrari has very talented drivers. I think the combination they’ve chosen is very good.”

Meanwhile Wolff himself is keen to get back to racing after an unprecedentedly long lay off due to the coronavirus shutdown. The 2020 season will finally start with a packed initial calendar of races in Europe during July and August.

“Everyone at our plants in Brackley and Brixworth is relieved that it’s finally starting,” he acknowledged. “We love the competition, we missed it.

“The programme is challenging, but we owe it to the fans to race again and hopefully give them a good show,” he said, while adding it was a shame that the first events would have to be held behind closed doors.

“Unfortunately we won’t have fans, the event will be reduced to pure competition – in other words, to what we love the most!” he said.

But Wolff added that the long delay had actually helped reignite his passion for the sport.

“When we flew to Australia in March, my joy was not as great as usual at the beginning of a season,” he admitted. “Perhaps it was because we had had six very intense years that there was still some mental exhaustion.

“Today I feel totally different,” he said. “I’m really starving to go racing again!”
