Neville: Pogba could help Man United challenge Liverpool

Phil Neville claims that Paul Pogba might be the key to Manchester United challenging champions-elect Liverpool and Manchester City.

Pogba is back to full fitness and is likely to be on the bench for Manchester United’s clash with Tottenham on Friday night.

He appears to be stuck at Manchester United as suitors are unlikely to pay £80m-plus for any footballer in the current climate.

That might work out to Manchester United’s advantage, with Neville one player who believes the Frenchman will be key to United challenging for a Premier League title again.

Amid questions about whether Pogba can dovetail with Bruno Fernandes, Neville told Premier League Productions:

“I think they can play together. I think Pogba has got the ability to play a little bit deeper or a little bit higher, and he can go box-to-box.

“I think they’ve got the players now where Pogba can fit in.

“It’s easy for people to say ‘get rid of Pogba’, but actually, have they built a team around him yet that enables him to perform?

“The criticism he gets… United lose and it’s Pogba’s fault, United win but Pogba doesn’t play well and it’s Pogba’s fault. Maybe now with Fernandes, it takes a bit of that pressure away, and you might see [an improvement].

“Pogba playing well will give Man Utd a better chance of winning the Premier League.

“When I see United playing well with Pogba in the team I think he’s world-class.

“He’s won the World Cup, he knows how to win.

“With Pogba in the team playing well, it gives United a good chance of challenging Liverpool and Man City.”

Two-word response to ‘Havertz to Bayern’ claims

Kai Havertz is not close to joining Bayern Munich in a £75m-plus deal, according to a German football expert.

Christian Falk – the head of football at BILD – was asked about a report in the Daily Telegraph suggesting that Bayern were ahead of Chelsea and Manchester United in the battle for the Bayer Leverkusen attacker.

His two-word response dismissed the story – repeated across the internet – that Chelsea and United were only willing to pay £50m for Havertz while the German champions-elect were happy to pay over £75m, which would have represented a club-record fee.

The idea that Premier League clubs would only pay £50m for Havertz seemed bizarre as he is only 21 but has scored 11 Bundesliga goals this season. He will attempt to add to that total on Wednesday night against Cologne.

Chelsea have reportedly made a list of players who could be sold to fund a move.

Favre admits Man United target Sancho could leave

Borussia Dortmund boss Lucien Favre admits that he is planning for life without Jadon Sancho next season.

Sancho is expected to leave the German club for Manchester United, assuming they are not put off by the reported £115m asking price.

The England international has logged 17 Bundesliga goals and 17 Bundesliga assists this season.

Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s clash with Mainz, Favre admitted that Sancho and Achraf Hakimi – who is in the second year of a two-year loan spell from Real Madrid – could both leave in the coming months.

“We’ll see after the season,” the manager said. “Of course, players will leave. We hope the players will stay, but it is possible that players will leave.

“You have already mentioned two [Hakimi and Sancho] that we don’t definitely know about.

“Of course, they could stay with us, which would be very good for me. But we’ll see what we’ll do, whether it’s in defence, midfield or attack.”

Club ‘not that desperate’ to consider swaps for Man Utd target

Brescia are “not that desperate” to consider swap deals for Manchester United target Sandro Tonali.

Tonali was linked with a €60m Manchester United move in March as the 20-year-old continues to consider leaving the club he joined as a youth player in 2012.

Currently bottom of Serie A, Brescia realise there is little chance of fending off interest from Manchester United, Inter Milan, Juventus, Barcelona and Napoli.

But president Massimo Cellino has warned any potential suitors against making part-exchange offers in what is certain to be a difficult summer transfer window.

Barca in particular have openly discussed the prospect of player trades in lieu of money, yet Cellino will resist any attempt to offload fringe squad players onto his struggling team.

“So far there’s only been a few phone calls, without anything beyond that,” Cellino told Gr Parlamento.

“It’s difficult to talk about [the transfer market] after everything that’s happened, but I hope the lad keeps having fun on the pitch like he did before.

“I wouldn’t like all these rumours to lead to another problem, which hurts our chances of staying up.

“Inter and Juve have both asked me about him, as have other teams. What’s for certain is that the player wants to stay in Italy and we’ll accommodate him.

“I don’t like swap deals. We’re not that desperate.”

There goes the chance to see Phil Jones thrive in northern Italy.

Cellino has previously mentioned Inter and Juventus as “the destinations he prefers,” despite offers of €40m from Napoli and €65m “plus two very interesting young players” from Barcelona.

Pogba ‘unlikely to start’ amid Fernandes question at Man Utd

Paul Pogba will reportedly not start Manchester United’s Premier League return against Tottenham on Friday.

Pogba has not featured for United for nearly six months through injury, but is thought to be fit with the resumption of the league on the horizon.

But according to The Athletic, he is ‘unlikely to start against Spurs’.

Many have been questioning whether Pogba and Bruno Fernandes can play in the same team together, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been trying out the pair in practice matches ahead of the restart.

But The Athletic claims preparations have continued with Pogba out of the starting XI.

United were enjoying an outstanding run of form before lockdown brought the Premier League to a halt, going 10 games unbeaten and recording a stunning win over Manchester City in their last game.

Which means Solskjaer will likely stick with the midfield that served them so well in those matches.

Fred has been a completely different player this season, Scott McTominay has improved, Nemanja Matic has returned to form, and Bruno Fernandes has been a revelation since his move from Sporting Lisbon in January.

Solskjaer has maintained that Pogba has a future at Old Trafford, despite consistently being linked with a move, and will surely find a place for him alongside Fernandes before the end of the season.

But it looks like Pogba will have to be patient.

Henderson’s worry over Liverpool return: Klopp must ‘be careful’

Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson admits he and manager Jurgen Klopp will have to watch their language when football returns next week.

With matched to be played behind-closed-doors for the foreseeable future, football on TV will sound very different, with viewers likely to be able to hear a lot more of what the players shout on the pitch.

And Henderson admits he will have to be careful not to swear, joking that he would would otherwise have to issue a public apology after every game, claiming Klopp should mind his language too.

“For the players it will be different playing in a big game in a stadium where there’s no crowd because you can hear everybody talking. Again, we’ve got to adapt to that situation and try to keep the swearing down to a minimum,” Henderson told the Liverpool FC Magazine.

“I’m more worried about my language when I’m playing! I don’t want to be having to apologise to everybody after every single game so I need to be careful, especially in the heat of the game.

“I’m sure the manager will have to be careful with his language as well! But he’ll also know we can’t blame the crowd for not being able to hear what he’s saying at certain times of the game.”

Liverpool will be crowned champions for the first time in 30 years if Manchester City lose to Arsenal on Wednesday and the Reds win their Merseyside derby against Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday.

“When you were little and you used to play for your school there was no crowd watching then really, so you’ve just got to enjoy your football and appreciate that we are able to go back doing what we love doing,” Henderson said.

“If we do manage to do our job properly and we do manage to get over the line and win the league then that would be amazing.”

Neville picks Liverpool POTY; explains why ‘Klopp came for me’

Click:开放api接口大全

Gary Neville claims Alisson should be named Player of the Year, as he has had a more significant impact than Virgil van Dijk at Liverpool.

Neville was involved in a public spat with Loris Karius in 2016, which drew criticism from Jurgen Klopp.

And the Sky Sports pundit believes the signing of Alisson was the biggest key to Liverpool’s recent success, comparing the Brazilian with Man Utd legends Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van Der Sar.

“I think Allison has made Liverpool win the League,” Neville told the Mirror.

“I think when people talk about van Dijk being the missing piece I think that there is an element of that.

“But, it’s Allison for me.

FEATURE: Klopp might be facing his biggest Liverpool challenge yet

“When I go back to two years or three years ago, I was very critical of the goalkeepers that were at Liverpool. I said I felt that they would never win the League while the current goalkeeper was in the position.

“Jurgen Klopp came for me, I don’t know whether he was angry with me but he certainly had a go at me in the media.

“But as soon as Allison came – I saw it at Manchester United with Schmeichel then I saw it in that next spell where we had greatness with Van Der Sar.

“Once your goalkeeper is calm, authoritative, saves most shots on his goal, gives confidence to the rest of the team, the impact of that is absolutely incredible.

“For me Van Dijk is one of the best centre halves I have ever seen live but for me, if you’re talking about the last two years; what’s been the big change for me in Liverpool is the goalkeeper.

“They won the European Cup and they won the League. I put van Dijk just behind but Alison for me has been the biggest impact at Liverpool.”

Deeney: One gay or bi person at every football club

Watford striker Troy Deeney claims there is probably one gay player in every football team.

Deeney believes gay footballers are worried about shouldering the responsibility of publicly coming out but feels one doing so would lead to masses following their lead.

Talking on the BBC Podcast Grounded with Louis Theroux, the 31-year-old said: “I would go on record saying that there is probably one gay or bi person in every football team. They’re there, they are 100% there.

“I think people that are gay or from that community definitely are very worried about having to shoulder the responsibility of being the first. I think once the first comes out, there would be loads.”

Deeney does not believe it would be an “issue” if a high-profile player was gay or bisexual and added: “If he come out and said it, I genuinely believe you would get in the first week at least 100 people that went ‘me too’. Just because they don’t want to be the face of it.”

Deeney, who returned to action for Watford in a friendly on Saturday ahead of the Premier League return, added: “I think there is now a bigger platform than ever to be a gay athlete of any nature.

“I also wonder, why people finish football, rugby, whatever the sport it might be, and then go ‘I am gay’… I feel like it must be a real heavy load to carry throughout all your whole sporting career.”

Former Norwich and Nottingham Forest striker Justin Fashanu, who declared he was gay in 1990 and died in 1998, remains the only openly gay male footballer in British history.
