Sheringham reveals what Fergie told him before CL final equaliser

Teddy Sheringham says he was hoping that Man Utd didn’t score in the second half of the 1999 Champions League final so that he could get on the pitch.

The Red Devils went into the half-time interval at a goal down against Bayern Munich before Sir Alex Ferguson’s side famously scored two goals in second-half stoppage time to lift the trophy.

Sheringham was told at half-time that he would definitely be coming on if the score remained 1-0 to Bayern before he came off the bench to equalise in the first minute of stoppage time and then Ole Gunnar Solskjaer completed the turnaround just two minutes later.

GOSSIP: Man Utd eye Bournemouth pair; City target Sane replacement

Sheringham told Sky Sports: “The manager actually came to me at half-time and he said, ‘Look if it stays at 1-0, you’re going to be going on, so get ready after about 10 or 15 minutes’.

“So I obviously wanted the score to stay the same at the time. I know that sounds a little bit selfish but you want to be part of what’s going on out there. And the score did stay the same and 15 minutes later he put me on.

“At the time I was watching Bayern Munich thinking, ‘Blimey! They’re very good’. We hadn’t been in the game at all, it was probably our worst performance of the season.

“They were 1-0 up, they could have gone 2-0 or 3-0 up, hit the bar, hit the post, Peter Schmeichel made some great saves, and we were kind of on the rack really. I think the manager just wanted to change things up and just see if we could ruffle them up a little bit.”

On not starting, Sheringham added: “Strange situation. I think if you asked everybody about those 10 or 11 days in May, we would all have different scenarios of what happened. I didn’t have the best of seasons, I’d had a lot of injuries, I’d lost my place to Dwight Yorke – who’d come in and done fantastic, I couldn’t dislodge him.

“I started the last game of the season then came off as sub, then started the FA Cup game on the bench and then came on after six minutes for Roy Keane, which I didn’t expect. Scored the opening goal after the first minute of coming on.

“Then we won the game 2-0 so I thought I had a chance of starting the Champions League final, but the manager had already set out what his plan was for the three games I think. I didn’t actually know that at the time but when I was told that I wasn’t playing I was disappointed again.

“But I just felt you never know what’s going to happen in football, it had already changed around in the FA Cup final, it might change in this one. So I kept my fingers crossed that I’d get the chance to be involved in an unbelievable treble that we were all hoping for at the end of that season.”

Nine findings during ‘investigation’ into Man Utd owners

A report has made nine ‘findings’ during an ‘investigation’ into the Glazer family who own Premier League side Man Utd.

The Glazers, who have six siblings on the Man Utd board, have struggled to win over the Old Trafford faithful since their takeover of the club in 2005.

Following the takeover, some disgruntled fans showed their displeasure by breaking away to create F.C. United of Manchester after critics complained that the Glazers were saddling the club with huge debts after being debt-free for so long.

FEATURE: Ten of the most overrated footballers of all time

As recently as this January, supporters were planning to show their discontent towards the Glazer ownership and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward by walking out of Old Trafford in the 58th minute of United’s home game on February 1 against Wolves.

And now The Athletic have launched a probe into the American owners to lift the lid on their money and time in charge.

The Athletic‘s ‘findings include’:

  • ‘The Glazers have personally received close to £200 million from the club since spending £270 million in the £790 million leveraged takeover
  • ‘Their lucrative commercial strategy was a drastic change of course for United upon their arrival, prompting executive departures, but has since been copied by other clubs
  • ‘United nearly signed Etihad Airways as a shirt sponsor before the airline became ubiquitous at Manchester City
  • ‘Although six Glazer siblings sit on the board, Joel is the “big boss” and spends eight hours a day working on United from his Washington DC office, which has a huge picture of George Best hanging on the wall
  • ‘Joel only sanctions signings after being convinced of their value and has confidence Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is building a squad for success
  • ‘The Glazers want to be in charge of United for a long time, with sources saying they were only prepared to offer Saudi Arabia a 20 per cent stake during talks last year
  • ‘The owners originally wanted to rebuild Old Trafford when they took over but it is believed they think a full revamp now doesn’t make financial sense
  • ‘There are very few potential buyers in the world who could afford what the Glazers would demand
  • ‘The Glazers’ ownership has cost the club £1.5 billion in interest, debt and other outgoings.’

Gossip: Man Utd eye Bournemouth pair; City target Sane replacement

Transfer gossip never stops…

MAN UTD TO GO CHERRY PICKING
Every club is making contingency plans this summer and Manchester United’s Plan B apparently centres on Bournemouth…

The MEN reckons that should United fail to land their preferred centre-forward and right-wing targets, then they’ll be going back to the south coast to plunder Josh King and David Brooks.

King was a late addition to United’s wishlist in January but Bournemouth wanted in excess of £30million for the former United reserve-team striker. The Red Devils opted to pursue Odion Ighalo instead but an extension to his loan deal appears unlikely, let alone a permanent move.

United will be in a stronger position this summer since King is entering the final year of his contract and the Norwegian has spoken of his wish to one day return to Old Trafford.

Brooks is said to be an alternative to Jadon Sancho. The Wales midfielder hasn’t played this season due to a serious ankle injury but coronavirus has seemingly given him in an unexpected opportunity to audition for a big move. So COVID’s not all bad…

AS has claimed that United could also rival Arsenal for Thomas Lemar should Sancho be out of reach.

CITY EYE BAILEY AS SANE REPLACEMENT
Manchester City are also thinking about contingencies for their wide positions. They would prefer Leroy Sane to commit to a new deal but that appears unlikely to happen, especially while Bayern Munich are hanging off him.

Should they lose Sane, the Daily Mail claims City are looking towards Germany for a replacement. Leon Bailey is reported to be their primary target with the Bayer Leverkusen star thought to be available for around £40million – similar to the price Sane might fetch.

Pep Guardiola is said to appreciate Bailey’s versatility and his ability to play off either flank. The 22-year-old has scored five goals in 17 Bundesliga appearances so far this season.

TOFFEES WELL SHORT OF ALLAN AGREEMENT
Everton have had to rethink their grand plans for this summer but, according to reports in Italy, Allan still features among them.

The Brazil midfielder has fallen out of favour since Carlo Ancelotti left Napoli and Il Mattino reports that his former boss is ready to spend £40million to reunite with the 29-year-old. But, apparently, Napoli want over £60million for Allan, who played only 14 minutes in the last six Serie A matches before the season was suspended.

The Daily Mail says Everton have also submitted a £25million offer for Barcelona defender Jean-Claire Todibo, who is currently on loan at Schalke. The Toffees urgency is prompted by the queue of clubs said to be sniffing around the 20-year-old.

The Toffees have also been linked with Jeremie Boga and Ancelotti may be interested to learn from The Guardian that Chelsea have opted against exercising their buy-back option on the Sassuolo winger.

AND THE REST
Barcelona could recall Philippe Coutinho immediately from his loan at Bayern Munich having offered the Brazilian to Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham… Mauro Icardi is close to a permanent move to PSG for around £54million… Arkadiusz Milik is hoping to join Juventus but Napoli will have to lower their £36million valuation… Real Betis are eyeing five loan or permanent deals with Barcelona with Ansu Fati, Carles Alena, Riqui Puig, Junior Firpo and Francisco Trincao among their targets.

Ex-Man Utd man recalls how Fergie was ‘fuming’ after ‘Pizzagate’

Former Man Utd defender Mikael Silvestre has recalled how Sir Alex Ferguson was “absolutely fuming” after Cesc Fabregas threw a pizza at him in 2004.

Fabregas has long been considered the culprit in the infamous incident after a heated game between Arsenal and Man Utd in October 2004.

The Red Devils ended Arsenal’s 49-game unbeaten Premier League run with a 2-0 victory, after which players and coaching staff clashed in the tunnel.

FEATURE: Six Premier League title-clinching double signings

Ferguson was hit in the face by a pizza during the fracas, with the Scot once saying that “to this day, I have no idea who the culprit is”.

Martin Keown once implied it was the midfielder – “it was a Spanish fella with great technique” – and Fabregas confirmed the rumours in 2017.

“We beat Arsenal to end their unbeaten run,” Silvestre told FourFourTwo magazine. “We were like, ‘There is no way that they are going to make it 50 at Old Trafford. No chance.’

“That was a huge motivation for us. The aftermath of that game was crazy, with pizza flying and everyone pushing and insulting each other in the tunnel.

“The stewards and security guards ended up having to separate everyone. It wasn’t a very good moment. You want to fight on the pitch, but in a football fight, not a fist fight! Sometimes, tempers go far beyond the football pitch.”

Silvestre added: “With the pizza, it was just thrown over a group of guys pushing each other and landed on Ferguson. He was absolutely fuming about it.

“No one knew exactly where it came from, but I later heard it was Cesc Fabregas. It was a childish act from him, but he was really young back then.

“When I moved to Arsenal in 2008, I said to Fabregas, “I knew it was you!” He admitted it.”

Neville warns looming financial ‘nightmare’ threatens EFL clubs

Gary Neville is concerned about a looming financial “nightmare” for English Football League clubs while Stevenage have hit out at plans to follow through with relegation if the season is decided off the pitch.

Huddersfield owner Phil Hodgkinson told the BBC over the weekend that around “50 or 60” clubs were in danger of going bust if supporters were not allowed to attend fixtures next season.

While Neville disputes the number put forward, the former Manchester United and England full-back believes the EFL will need investment down the line to keep clubs solvent.

FEATURE: Football is the opium of the people; don’t be a dope

“It will be July, August, September, October where the real pressure comes,” Neville said on The Football Show on Sky Sports.

“I do think there will be clubs considering going into administration in the next three to four months, basically just to save themselves.

“Everybody’s looking down at their own feet and they’re not seeing the carnage that’s coming economically in the next three to four months.

“What the Huddersfield owner says is quite alarming. I do think there is a looming nightmare economically for the EFL clubs, quite a few of them. Whether it’s up to 60 I’m not sure.

“Football does need at the EFL level some funding from somewhere in the next four, five or six months or else we will see sides go into administration, that would be a real shame.”

Stevenage have become the latest club to criticise the EFL, which last week indicated that teams in the Championship, League One and League Two will still be promoted and relegated even if their seasons are ended early.

League Two clubs earlier this month voted to end their campaign immediately without relegation but the EFL disagrees and a points per game system put forward would see Stevenage drop down to the National League.

Stevenage chairman Phil Wallace said on his club’s website: “There is absolutely no integrity whatsoever in using a mathematical formula to expel a club from the EFL. That is unjust and wholly wrong.

“There is no integrity in the EFL Board ignoring the overwhelming vote by League Two clubs that told them they didn’t want to see any expulsion from the EFL by a points per game formula.

“As the rules stand, we should play it or void it. We can introduce a rule change for PPG for promotion and play-offs, I have no problem with that but it’s wholly wrong if that artificial formula is then used to relegate a club that has a reasonable chance of surviving by playing.

“That is a completely different, and unacceptable, step to take. There is a simple solution with integrity – bring more teams into the EFL from the National League to increase the product.

“Since the National League season wasn’t completed in the way it was intended, one option is to leave League Two as it is, with no relegation, and promote one club from the NL this season instead of two, to bring the EFL back to 72 teams, but with three up, three down established and in place for next season.

“No lawsuits, no clubs bankrupted and something created for the National League that appears to be impossible to achieve.”

Championship clubs are set to return to training on Monday as they tentatively begin steps towards resuming their season next month.

West Brom have followed Leeds – the clubs occupy the top two spots in the division – to say they want the campaign to be finished on the pitch if it can be done safely.

Chief executive Mark Jenkins said on the Baggies’ website: “The club is resolutely behind finishing the campaign, if it is at all possible, where it belongs and that is on the pitch.

“From the moment that the path was cleared for the players to return to training, albeit in a regulated and strictly-controlled format, our mindset has been focused solely on being in the best possible shape, physically and mentally, to complete the remaining nine league fixtures.”

Warnock was ‘seething’ at Benitez after he ‘bottled’ Liverpool CL final call

Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock claims Rafa Benitez lacked the “bottle” to call him and tell him that he wouldn’t be in the 2005 Champions League final squad.

Warnock was initially named in the Liverpool squad that eventually went on to beat AC Milan on penalties despite being 3-0 down at half-time, but was later replaced in the squad by Josemi.

That left a “very sour taste” in Warnock’s mouth and he admits he couldn’t celebrate the team’s victory despite him being a lifelong fan.

MAILBOX PREDICTION: ‘Liverpool collapse to linger’

“When I hear it described as being one of Liverpool’s greatest ever nights, it leaves a very sour taste,” Warnock told BBC Sport. “It still hurts now, actually – the way it was handled was absolutely shocking.

“I was in the original squad when the team sheet up was put up at the training ground a few days before the game, and I was absolutely ecstatic. Then a couple of hours later, I got a call from Rafa Benitez’s assistant, Pako Ayesteran, saying there had been a mistake. Josemi was in instead.

“Even that was poor – the fact that Rafa did not have the bottle to ring me himself. He did speak to me briefly on the pitch after the game, but I was not in the mood at all, I was still seething.

“I had been the same during the game. Don’t get me wrong, it was never to the point where I wanted them to lose, because Liverpool were my club and they were my team-mates out there, but it hurts when you are not involved and I was sitting there in the stands thinking about it the whole time. You almost switch off from what is happening in the game.

“If you look at the celebrations afterwards, a lot of people are on all the different photos but I am nowhere to be seen. I couldn’t bring myself to stand there, it just did not feel right. You feel like you have been let down.”

Cleverley slammed over ‘ridiculous, nonsense’ PL return views

Former West Ham striker Dean Ashton accused Tom Cleverley of telling Watford fans what they “want to hear” in his recent comments about a return to football.

Watford captain Troy Deeney had previously revealed that he was concerned about a return to training, adding there were unanswered issues around BAME players.

While Hornets defender Adrian Mariappa was one of three individuals at Watford that tested positive for Covid-19 during the first round of Premier League testing.

Mailbox prediction: ‘Liverpool collapse to linger’

Despite that, Cleverley is keen for the Premier League to get back underway and feels safe at the club’s training ground.

Cleverley said: “We have to back ourselves as a squad. The odds, from where I’m standing, is that the season is going to go ahead. We are going to prepare for that.

“Even if it means playing without some of our best players, we have to back ourselves. We’ve got a great squad here and we’re confident.

“I was one of the more comfortable ones with returning to training. I fully understand that everyone’s circumstances are different and we took the decision as a squad to respect everyone’s individual decisions.

“But I wanted to come in, see how phase one was going to work and, if anything, it has made me feel even more comfortable. It’s well organised, it’s safe.

“There are still questions to be answered about phase two and three but as far as phase one goes it’s been fine.”

However, Ashton has called out Cleverley’s comments as “ridiculous, nonsense”.

Ashton told talkSPORT: “I just see that as the run-of-the-mill, football player coming out with just ridiculous, nonsense to questions they’ve been asked.

“That’s in terms of just coming out with the right things he thinks he should say that makes it sounds like, ‘it’s so important that we get back to being in the right frame of mind’ and ‘we’ve got to stay up’.

“It’s just a ridiculous comment from a player, in my opinion anyway. It should just be about what’s right for everybody.

“If it’s not right for Troy, that’s fair enough. As far as he’s concerned, that’s okay.

“But to me, it just came across, like we’ve seen in so many interviews with players, they just come out with the things they think their own supporters want to hear.”

Arsenal open talks with Leverkusen as they look to land €30m winger

Reports in Spain claim that Arsenal have opened talks with Bayer Leverkusen in an attempt to sign Moussa Diaby.

France Under-21 international Diaby has enjoyed a successful first season in the Bundesliga, scoring four goals and adding five assists in 21 appearances – and recorded two assists in Leverkusen’s first game back from the break.

With Arsenal at risk of losing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette this summer, they will need to be on the lookout for attacking reinforcements, and Diaby has come to their attention.

MAILBOX: An apology to Liverpool fans, naughty numbers, stone jaws and more…

According to Todofichajes, Arsenal have begun negotiating with Leverkusen over the future of the winger, but he won’t necessarily come on the cheap. It is claimed that the German club want to double their money on Diaby, whom they paid €15m for last summer.

It is suggested that Arsenal could insert a player of their own into the deal to reach the €30m asking price, although no player is mentioned specifically.

Diaby, who came through the ranks at his hometown club Paris Saint-Germain, remains under contract with Leverkusen until 2024.

While Diaby tends to play on the left wing rather than centrally, his acquisition could help soften the blow of a potential departure for star strikers Aubameyang or Lacazette.
