Police reveal five specific games they want at neutral venues

Police have set out the Premier League matches they would like to be played at neutral venues, which would include any Liverpool match where the title could be won.

The matches which have been requested to take place at neutral grounds are Manchester City v Liverpool, Manchester City v Newcastle, Manchester United v Sheffield United, Newcastle v Liverpool and Everton v Liverpool.

The police statement adds that “the game in which Liverpool could secure the league title” should also be moved, but this may end up needing to be more than one match if the Reds did not clinch it at the first attempt.

It was claimed on Friday morning that 12 games had been identified as “high risk” but it now seems that number is much smaller.

Deputy Chief Constable Mark Roberts of South Yorkshire Police, the UK’s football policing lead, said in a statement issued to the PA news agency: “Our discussions with the Premier League throughout this process have been positive, with a shared focus on the priority of public health.

“As such we have reached a consensus that balances the needs of football, while also minimising the demand on policing.

“The majority of remaining matches will be played, at home and away as scheduled, with a small number of fixtures taking place at neutral venues, which, contrary to some reports, have yet to be agreed.

“The views and agreement of forces which host Premier League clubs have been sought and where there were concerns, the Premier League has been supportive in providing flexibility in arranging alternative venues where requested.

“This plan will be kept continually under review to ensure public health and safety and a key part of this is for supporters to continue to respect the social distancing guidelines, and not to attend or gather outside the stadiums.”

Newcastle, in 13th, are the lowest-ranked side to be involved in a match at a neutral venue as things stand.

There had been complaints from some clubs towards the bottom of the table, including Brighton, about the impact of playing at neutral venues on sporting integrity.

Clubs will hold further discussions on whether to proceed with the season on this basis when they meet again on June 4.

The police statement did not mention any matches in the English Football League.

Championship clubs are back in training with a view to restarting next month, and an EFL spokesperson said: “It remains our intention to play all remaining league matches at clubs’ home grounds as long as they comply with the relevant Government guidance.

“We will only seek to move matches if they are not permitted by the relevant local authority, following any representations from the local police force.”

Man United captain explains why he ‘left in a bit of a huff’

Steve Bruce has recalled leaving Man United “in a bit of a huff” in 1996.

Bruce joined Man United for £800,000 in 1987, signing from Norwich amid interest from Tottenham, Chelsea and Rangers.

The centre-half spent nine successful years at Old Trafford, winning three Premier League titles, three FA Cups, one Cup Winners’ Cup and a handful of other trophies as Alex Ferguson built a side that would dominate the English football landscape for decades.

Neville reveals United icon ‘that helped me the most’

But Bruce left Man United under a cloud in 1996, left out of the 1996 FA Cup final victory over Liverpool due to a slight injury, and rejecting replacement captain Eric Cantona’s request that he lift the trophy at Wembley.

Bruce, believing that opportunities would continue to be restricted as he neared retirement, opted to join First Division Birmingham instead of seeing out the final year of his Man United contract.

“I have to say I left in a bit of a huff as well, which I regret now,” he told Sky Sports.

“It was the cup final. And of course Trevor Francis jumped all over it and rang me practically immediately. It was probably Sir Alex’s way of saying look, go out at the top, whatever. Even until I was 36, I know I didn’t play in the cup final, I still managed to play 40 games that year.

“I didn’t want to become a bit of a bit-part player after captaining the club for five years. I didn’t regret leaving because I had a great couple of years at Birmingham. That prolonged me.

“But certainly leaving, it dawns on you to leave.”

Liverpool ‘almost certainly’ won’t win title at Anfield

Liverpool are likely to be prevented from winning their first Premier League title at Anfield as authorities have identified “high risk” games that could be played at neutral venues.

The Reds need six points to guarantee finishing above Manchester City in a resumed Premier League season, thus securing their first championship since 1990.

The nature of that wait means ‘authorities are concerned’ about certain games ‘that might lead to fans congregating outside stadiums in breach of social-distancing guidelines’.

Among 12 matches that have been identified as “high risk” would be any home game in which Liverpool could win the title, as well as the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park and their meeting with Manchester City at the Etihad.

Each of those matches, as well as London derbies, ‘would have to be played at neutral grounds’ if that proposal is passed through by a vote during a shareholders’ meeting on June 4.

The Times make it clear that ‘any decision is not meant to be a judgment on the Liverpool fans but a recognition that a title win at Anfield would be a massive occasion for the club in what is a residential area.’

Liverpool ‘remain hopeful’ of playing at Anfield again in 2019/20, but ‘will almost certainly’ not do so in a game that could seal the title, rather in any matches thereafter.

‘Concerns’ have also been expressed over their first home game if they win the title away.

It looks like Stan Collymore was right all along (Stan Collymore was and is never right).

Giggs admits he is modelling Wales on ‘fantastic’ Liverpool

Manchester United great Ryan Giggs is attempting to mimic some elements of “fantastic” Liverpool with his Wales side.

Nobody has made more appearances for the Old Trafford giants than the 46-year-old, having represented the club 963 times between 1990 and deciding to hang up his boots to focus on coaching in 2014.

Giggs models a lot of his management on Sir Alex Ferguson, particularly when it comes to standards and discipline, and learned a lot working as assistant manager to Louis van Gaal.

One loanee who should feature for each PL club next season

The United great highlighted the work being done by Manchester United’s rivals, telling Laureus: “In our league at the moment we have fantastic managers, obviously Jurgen Klopp, Pep Guardiola.

“I was fortunate to spend two years under Louis Van Gaal at Manchester United, so I learned a lot from Louis who was very similar with Sir Alex regarding standards, regarding discipline,” he added.

“With the obvious pause in the season because of Covid-19, I think there’s a lot of questions still to be answered.

“But I think what we have seen this year is Liverpool are a fantastic team, managed by a great coach Jurgen Klopp and, it pains me to say it as a United fan, but they have been fantastic this season.

“Obviously they’ll go on and, whatever way it is, they’ll win the league and deserve it.

“They’ve had two brilliant seasons actually, last year pushing Man City all the way. They’re a great team to watch.

“There were certain things that I’ve taken out of the way that Liverpool play, and taking it on to the way that I want to do with Wales.

“Hopefully United will bridge that gap and catch them up. But you have to give credit where credit is due and Liverpool have been fantastic this season.”

Messi tips England international to become ‘one of the best’

Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi has tipped Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount to become “one of the best” footballers in the world.

Mount, who was playing on loan at Derby County last season under current boss Frank Lampard, has been brilliant in his debut Premier League season at Chelsea.

The 21-year-old has contributed six goals and four assists in the Premier League this season, earning him his first six caps for England.

Messi, who has won heaps of trophies and individual honours in his career at Barcelona, has tipped Mount to become one of the best players in world football.

Speaking about Mount, Messi said (via the Daily Mirror): “Having watched him play he has the potential to be one of the best.”

Former Everton midfielder Tim Cahill was also recently full of praise for Mount after his breakthrough season.

“I like the look of Mason Mount,” Cahill told Sky Sports.

“I think he’s a top goalscorer and he’s got a massive career ahead of him.

“One of the reasons why I like him a lot is because of his coach [Frank Lampard] and the way that he’s trying to mould a player similar to himself.

“He can lead him and show him the right ways.

“You can see that starting to come to fruition with his football this season. I’m a big fan.”

Tomori explains how he came close to quitting Chelsea

Fikayo Tomori says he came close to quitting football in his early days as a youngster at Chelsea.

The defender, 22, has played 21 times for the Blues during a breakthrough campaign which has seen him earn his first England cap.

Tomori signed a new deal at Chelsea in December that will keep him at the club until the summer of 2024 but he admits that he was close to quitting football as a youngster coming through at Cobham.

FEATURE: Five players Chelsea should build their team around…

“Once I’ve left the centre of excellence, I’m going to Cobham and obviously this is proper Cobham, I’d see Tammy [Abraham] there, Dom Solanke,” Tomori told Chelsea TV.

“I noticed that I couldn’t just pick the ball up and run through everyone. So after that I got back in the car and I told my parents: ‘I’m not coming back here anymore.’

“It was obviously a level up and my dad said: ‘No, you’re going to come back.’  It wasn’t the fact that he was saying: ‘You must be a footballer, you must play football,’ it was kind of like, you are at a level where you need to challenge yourself.

“There is no point playing with people that you find it too easy, if you come here and challenge yourself you are going to get better and I am glad he had that take on it.”

Luiz to leave Arsenal this summer despite Arteta’s ‘desperate’ plea

David Luiz will leave Arsenal this summer after it was revealed his contract was only for an initial 12-month stay, according to reports.

Luiz moved across London as he joined the Gunners from Chelsea in the summer but had struggled to improve a porous backline in the opening months of the campaign.

The Brazil international has impressed since Mikel Arteta’s appointment in December and seems to now be settled at the Emirates Stadium.

FEATURE: Old Folks XI: The unmistakable David Luiz

Paul Ince claimed in February that Luiz’s performances had improved so much that he has been playing like an “impostor” under Arteta.

However, Sky Sports now claim that the Brazilian will leave Arsenal this summer with Luiz ‘out of contract next month and no negotiations over a new deal planned.’

It was reported at the time that Luiz had signed an initial two-year deal when he joined in an £8m deal but the report claims it was actually only for a 12-month stay.

Arsenal ‘are expected to restrict spending’ this summer with but Arteta is ‘desperate to keep him’ at the club, while Luiz is ‘also keen to stay’.

Arsenal ‘interested’ in €75m Liverpool target to strengthen defence

Arsenal are reportedly monitoring Sevilla defender Diego Carlos with Mikel Arteta keen to add quality in the centre of his defence.

According to El Desmarque, Arsenal are “interested” in the centre-back and they are “attentive” to what may happen with the 27-year-old in the next transfer window.

Arteta is believed to be ready to ship out as many as three central defenders this summer and is on the lookout for new recruits.

GOSSIP: Klopp ‘phones’ £60m replacement for £164.3m trio

The report claims Barcelona are also interested in the defender, who has a contract until June 2024, and a €75m release clause.

Liverpool though were believed to have made a move to sign Carlos in the winter window, but for “various reasons” a transfer never happened.

And only last month Jurgen Klopp was again linked with Carlos with Spanish publication Sport (via the Daily Express) claiming the Reds boss not only sees the defender as the ideal partner to play alongside Virgil van Dijk but he has the funds to complete the transfer too.

The player himself has cooled speculation: “There is a lot of news that comes out and that we see, but I don’t know.

“What I think is to finish the competition as well as possible and I leave that for later.

“They are very serious things for me and this type of situation must be left for later I am focused exclusively on competition and finishing Sevilla as best as possible, ” he told Onda Cero last month.

And while Carlos has moved to quell speculation he could be on the move this summer, Mundo Deportivo claims Sevilla have already begun the hunt for his successor in their side – with Porto centre-half Diogo Leite their No 1 option.

Carlos moved to Spain from Ligue 1 side Nantes last summer and has really caught the eye, appearing in 24 matches in all competitions to help the club into third place in the table and in with a chance of bringing Champions League football back to the Ramon Sanchez Stadium.
