Manuel Neuer and Thomas Muller were pleased with Bayern Munich’s winning returning to action, even if the Bundesliga leaders fell short of their best in front of empty stands at Union Berlin.

Having seen Borussia Dortmund close the gap with Saturday’s derby shellacking of Schalke, Hansi Flick’s men regained their four-point cushion with a solid, if unspectacular, performance the following day.

Robert Lewandowski’s penalty – his 40th goal of the season in all competitions – put Bayern on course for a victory wrapped up by Benjamin Pavard at Union, who could have few arguments with the 2-0 scoreline.

“We’re glad we were dominant and deservedly took the three points,” Bayern skipper Neuer told the club’s official website. “We could have played better, but we deservedly won the match.

“We’re used to a different atmosphere at this stadium. But it’s down to us, it’s a question of motivation, of attitude and of being aware of what kind of match it is.

“We’re trying to do our best of course, we’ve worked very hard, and now we want to live up to our full potential.

“It’s a new situation, we have to cope with it. One of the nine matchdays is over. We shouldn’t write off any team.”

Bayern head coach Flick called it a “workmanlike” and satisfying win in the capital, where Muller saw an early opener cancelled out for offside.

“We travelled here to take three points, we’ve achieved that,” Muller said.

“There was room for improvement here and there, especially in the first 25 minutes, we resorted to too many long balls then. We improved a bit after that.

“We were more confident after the opener, we should have scored another goal before half-time.

“Our display was OK but there was certainly room for improvement. We were excited, just like before matchday 1 in August.

“Both teams coped really well with the circumstances. Our focus is on the sport as soon as the ball rolls.

“Of course the fans can give us some extra momentum, but we must ignore that. We’re four points clear, we took another step towards our big goal today.”

Union’s hopes rapidly faded away on Sunday, when their head coach Urs Fischer was not in the dugout following the death of his father-in-law.

Union Berlin defender Neven Subotic, who gave away the penalty converted by Lewandowski, said: “The whole procedure is different, a lot was missing. We saw what makes our job so special: the fans.

“But it’s our job to play football and put up a fight. It’s in our nature, we saw that today.

“I hope it was an exciting match for the fans at home. At least it felt really good out on the pitch.”

HORNBROOK, CA — A deadly blaze on the Oregon-California border that claimed one life grew to over 9,000 acres on Saturday as firefighters across the western United States battled wildfires in 13 states. Dozens of fires have destroyed dozens of homes and forced the evacuation of thousands of people.

The civilian fatality in the blaze was announced on Friday by California fire authorities and is the latest death of the wildfire season; two people were reportedly killed by an Oklahoma wildfire in April. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CalFire) announced the death Friday just before 9:30 a.m. pacific time, but provided no additional details pending next of kin notification.

The deadly Northern California border fire in Siskiyou County, dubbed the Klamathon Fire, had grown to 9,200 acres and was only 5 percent contained by Saturday, according to CalFire. The fire began just after noon on Thursday and grew to more than 5,000 acres within hours.

Late on Thursday, California Gov. Jerry Brown declared a State of Emergency in Siskiyou County due to the destruction and chaos caused by the growing Klamathon Fire.

The Klamathon Fire forced the overnight closure of busy Interstate-5 between Ashland and Yreka as California firefighters and emergency responders worked quickly to evacuate residents from the area around Hornbrook and Hilt, California. A handful of nearby rural highways connecting Oregon and California were also closed.

Around 6:30 a.m. local time Friday, the Oregon Department of Transportation announced CalFire was reopening I-5 and escorting travelers through the smokey burn zone with help from Oregon State Police and the California Highway Patrol.

I-5 was opened completely in both directions without the need for escorts about three hours later, though state transportation officials told travelers to expect considerable delays as dense, slow-moving traffic crawled through the burn zone.

The Klamathon Fire is just one of about 60 wildfires currently burning across the West and Alaska.

Colorado is currently reporting 10 active wildfires within the state and one more on the Wyoming side of the border. The Spring Creek Fire, east of Alamosa, Colorado, is the largest currently active fire in the state and the third-largest on record.

As of Friday afternoon, that blaze, Spring Creek Fire, had burned more than 105,000 acres (or 161 square miles), destroyed 100 homes, and forced the evacuations of 2,000 others. InciWeb reported the fire was only 35 percent contained Friday as night approached.

Fires in Utah, Nevada, New Mexico, and Arizona have also been reported.

The largest in Nevada, the Martin Fire, has burned 22,000 acres and was only 2 percent contained. The largest in Utah, the Dollar Ridge Fire, has burned more than 47,000 acres and was only 4 percent contained.

According to USA Today, wildfires this year have already torched more than 4,500 square miles — roughly 700 square miles above average for this time of year. And based on current weather forecasts, which predict increasing temperatures due to a dome of high pressure over the West, conditions aren’t likely to improve any time soon.

LAS VEGAS, NV — A federal judge has ordered the United States Postal Service to pay an artist more than $3.5 million after a photo of the artist’s replication of the Statue of Liberty was used by the agency in its Forever stamp collection.

The artist, Robert Davidson, designed the replica statue that stands in front of the New York-New York Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas in 1996 and is called “Lady Liberty.” For a Forever stamp collection released in 2010, the USPS used a photo of the Las Vegas statue as opposed to a photo of the actual Statue of Liberty.

According to court documents, when the USPS selected the photo for the stamp, it did not realize that it was not a photo of the New York statue.

Terry McCaffrey, a former manager of stamp development at USPS, testified that he would not have selected the photo had he known it was not a photo of the real Statue of Liberty, court documents show. The USPS paid Getty Images $1500 for the photo of the Vegas statue and billions of stamps bearing that image were printed and sold.

At issue was whether the Las Vegas statue was sufficiently original to be given copyright protection, whether the government infringed in using the photo and, if it did, whether the use was OK under fair use guidelines.

Davidson filed a lawsuit in 2013, alleging that the U.S. government and USPS infringed on his exclusive rights and privileges under the United States Copyright Act.

“Although the Postal Service paid for a license from Getty Images for the photograph, Getty had no rights to the underlying subject of the photograph,” Judge Eric G. Bruggink wrote in a ruling June 29.

Davidson obtained a copyright for his work in 2013 and since he did not obtain it within five years of the statue’s creation, he had to prove that his work is original. The court said it was satisfied that Davidson succeeded in making the statue his own creation, particularly the face.

In testimony, Davidson said that when creating the face, he thought that it needed to be a little more appropriate for the hotel in Las Vegas.

“And I just thought that this needed a little more modern, a little more contemporary face, definitely more feminine, just something that I thought was more appropriate for Las Vegas,” Davidson said, according to court documents. He also testified that his mother-in-law was an inspiration for the face and he looked at a photo of her every night while the face was being constructed.

Because the court found that the sculpture is distinct, it ruled that the government’s use was infringement and was not protected by a fair use exemption. The two parties are required to file a status report by July 27 regarding the status of the compensation.

FOUNTAIN HILLS, AZ — CVS has apologized to a transgender woman who said an Arizona pharmacist refused to fill one of her prescriptions for hormone therapy and questioned her loudly in front of staff and customers about why she was given the prescriptions.

The woman, Hilde Hall, shared her experience through the ACLU and said she had filed a complaint with the Arizona State Board of Pharmacy. CVS said the pharmacist is no longer employed by the company.

Hall wrote that the incident happened in April as she went to the CVS pharmacy in her town of Fountain Hills to fill her first prescriptions for hormone therapy. Hall said the pharmacist refused to fill one of her prescriptions and did not give her a clear reason for the refusal.

“He just kept asking, loudly and in front of other CVS staff and customers, why I was given the prescriptions,” Hall wrote.

She described feeling embarrassed and distressed and said she nearly started crying in the middle of the store.

“I didn’t want to answer why I had been prescribed this hormone therapy combination by my doctor,” she wrote. “I felt like the pharmacist was trying to out me as transgender in front of strangers. I just froze and worked on holding back the tears.”

Hall wrote that the pharmacist then refused to return the prescription note to her. When her doctor’s office tried to intervene on her behalf, the pharmacist still refused, she said. Finally, she had her prescription filled at the local Walgreens without any problems.

“CVS Health extends its sincere apologies to Ms. Hall for her experience at our pharmacy in Fountain Hills, Arizona last spring,” CVS said in a statement. “The conduct of the pharmacist, who is no longer employed by CVS, violated company policies and does not reflect our values or our commitment to inclusion, nondiscrimination and the delivery of outstanding patient care.”

CVS also noted in its statement that for the past four years, it has earned a perfect score on the Human Right Campaign’s “Corporate Equality Index.” Hall wrote that while the tool “is a valuable tool for assessing corporate policies and practices pertinent to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer employees,” there should be measures in place to ensure no other customer is humiliated like her.

CVS also apologized to Hall for not appropriately following up on her original complaint to CVS, which the company said was due to an “unintentional oversight.”

“We pride ourselves in addressing customer concerns in a timely manner and we are taking steps to prevent this isolated occurrence from happening again,” CVS said.

Last month, a woman in Arizona wrote that a pharmacist at a Walgreens in Peoria refused to fill her prescription for a medical abortion drug. The woman, who was nine weeks pregnant, was told by a doctor that she would ultimately have a miscarriage due to complications.

The pharmacist cited ethical reasons for doing so and Walgreens said in a statement that its policy allows pharmacists to step away from filling a prescription for moral reasons. The statement also said that the pharmacist is then required to refer the prescription to another pharmacist or manager on duty to meet the patient’s need in a timely manner.

According to Arizona Central, Arizona is one of six states where pharmacists can refuse to fill a prescription of religious or moral grounds. Under Arizona law, companies must accommodate any religious convictions and pharmacists have to notify the company of such convictions in advance, according to Arizona Central.

Résultat : les pressionsartérielles étaient moindres chez les patientsadeptes des mesures à domicile. Après avoirécarté certains biais d’interprétation, lesauteurs chiffrent cet écart à une baisse de lapression systolique de 2,2 mm Hg et de 1,9 mm pour la pressiondiastolique. Le risque relatif de pression artérielleau-dessus des limites acceptées était plus bas chezles patients adeptes des mesures à domicile.
Selon les auteurs, ces écarts ne peuvent s’expliquer par leseul effet de stress lié au milieu médical (le fameuxsyndrome de la blouse blanche). La mesure effectuée par lespatients leur permet de plus s’impliquer, les rendant acteur de laprise en charge de leur maladie et donc plus attentifs au suivi deleur traitement.

– La transmission du VIH, toujours active chez les homosexuelsmasculins :
Les résultats de la notification obligatoire du VIHindiquent que 27 % des personnes ayant découvert leurséropositivité sont des homosexuels masculins dont lacontamination a eu lieu dans les 6 derniers mois pour 58 % d’entreeux ;
– Une recrudescence des infections sexuellement transmissibles(IST) :
L’augmentation des cas de syphilis a été de plus de100 % entre 2001 et 2002 et, en dépit des actions deprévention et des incitations au dépistage. 428 casont été notifiés à l’InVS en 2003. Plusrécemment, une investigation de l’InVS à la suite designalements en provenance des Pays-Bas et de Belgique a permisd’identifier 38 cas de lymphogranulomatose vénériennerectale (LGV) en France, tous survenus dans la communautéhomosexuelle.
– Des comportements à risque persistants :
Les pratiques à risque avec les partenaires occasionnelsconcernaient plus de la moitié des répondants pour lafellation avec exposition au sperme, 93 % pour lapénétration anale et 33 % déclaraient au moinsune pénétration anale non protégée.Enfin, un sur 10 indiquait être séropositif tandis queplus d’un quart ignorait son statut sérologique.L’InVS estime que “les causes de ce relâchement sontmultiples et leur analyse demeure complexe. Les antidépresseurs ne sont pas des médicamentsanodins, ils peuvent augmenter le risque suicidaire, en particulierchez les enfants et les adolescents. Suite aux recommandationseuropéennes, l’Agence françaises desécurité sanitaire des produits de santé(Afssaps) a publié le 10 décembre 2004 uncommuniqué qui appelle les médecins à laprudence vis à vis des inhibiteurs de la recapture de lasérotonine (IRS)*: « la prescriptiond’antidépresseurs chez les plus jeunes, si elle estenvisagée, ne doit intervenir qu’en seconde intention, dansle cadre d’une dépression majeure, avec une prise en comptede l’ensemble des bénéfices attendus et des risquespossibles (…) en cas de prescription d’antidépresseurs,une surveillance étroite du patient doit êtreeffectuée et s’accompagner de la recherche d’un comportementsuicidaire, surtout en début de traitement ».
Le 14 décembre à l’Assemblée nationale, leMinistre de la santé Philippe Douste-Blazy déclaraitavoir envoyé une lettre à l’Afssaps lui demandantd’étudier l’interdiction de la prescriptiond’antidépresseurs au-dessous de 18 ans.
La perspective d’une telle interdiction est diversement accueilliepar les spécialistes. Certains estiment que le Ministre estallé vite en besogne et que l’abandon desantidépresseurs pour les dépressions majeures seraitpréjudiciable. La qualité de vie est devenue un paramètre incontournable pour évaluer le retentissement des maladies. Selon plusieurs études, les colopathies fonctionnelles font partie des pathologies les plus gênantes dans la vie quotidienne.

Les colopathies fonctionnelles sont-elles vraiment une maladiebénigne ? Oui, si l’on retient qu’elles ne sontassociées à aucune lésion du tube digestif etque leurs conséquences se limitent à dessymptômes gênants. Et pourtant, à examiner leurretentissement sur la qualité de vie, force est de lesconsidérer comme une affection sérieuse.Une maladie très handicapanteUne enquête a été réalisée enFrance, parmi des patients consultant en médecinegénérale ou en gastroentérologie (1). Dans lecadre de cette enquête des questionnaires ontété mis au point pour évaluerprécisément l’impact des maladies surdifférents aspects de la vie quotidienne : vie sociale,activité professionnelle, sexualité, forme physique,anxiété, dépression…Les réponses ontmontré que les symptômes de la colopathiefonctionnelle ont des effets considérables sur la viequotidienne. La moitié ayant répondu estime que lacolopathie entraîne un handicap dans la vie sociale et 27 %dans la vie professionnelle, à l’origine d’un arrêt detravail dans 21 % des cas.Selon une autre enquête menée aux Etats-Unis,l’altération de la qualité de vie est plus importantepour les personnes souffrant de cette affection que pour cellesayant un reflux gastro-oesophagien, pour tous les critèresconsidérés, à l’exception de ceux relatifs auxaltérations physiques. Sur le plan de la fatigue et dubien-être émotionnel notamment, l’impact de lacolopathie sur la qualité de vie semble mêmeêtre plus important que celui d’un diabètetraité par insuline ou d’une insuffisance rénale (2).Dans une autre enquête, les colopathes se sontrévélés avoir une qualité de vie plusaltérée que des asthmatiques ou des migraineux, maismoins que des patients atteints d’attaques de panique ou depolyarthrite rhumatoïde (3).Comment expliquer un tel retentissement ?“Le colopathe a mal au ventre et fait des régimes quin’arrangent rien, souligne le Pr. Benoit Coffin, chef de service degastro-entérologie à l’hôpital Louis Mourier deColombes. Quand il est invité chez des amis, il est anxieux,car il craint de ne pas pouvoir manger, d’avoir la diarrhée,mal au ventre…Quand il veut avoir une relation sexuelle, c’est lamême chose. En fait sa maladie interfère avec beaucoupd’aspects de sa vie quotidienne“. Pour le Pr. Coffin, ce ne sontpas les douleurs qui gênent le plus les patients, car ilssavent qu’elles sont passagères, mais les ballonnements, quidonnent un inconfort persistant toute la journée.Des traitements contre la douleurSi l’on prend en compte les critères les plus récentsde la maladie, 5 % de la population française souffrirait decolopathie fonctionnelle. Cette affection évolue par crises,d’une durée moyenne de six jours, et plus d’un patient surdeux ont des symptômes persistant au fil des ans, sanstendance à s’estomper au cours de la vie. Parmi lestraitements disponibles, seuls les antispasmodiques ontprouvé leur efficacité. Parmi eux, on trouve desanticholinergiques et des musculotropes. Ces médicaments quipermettent de lutter contre les spasmes musculaires viennentà bout des symptômes douloureux. Enfin, il possibleque votre médecin vous prescrive un anxiolytique ou unantidépresseur. Cela ne signifie en aucun cas que vostroubles sont imaginaires mais que la composante psychologique dusyndrome du colon irritable est aujourd’hui reconnue.
