UEFA accepts some leagues might be cancelled

UEFA has opened the door to domestic league and cup competitions being cancelled “in special cases” due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The national member associations of European football’s governing body gathered for a conference call on Tuesday for an update on “a variety of calendar options” to complete the 2019/20 season.

UEFA had previously warned that domestic leagues cancelling their seasons prematurely risked their clubs being excluded from its competitions in the future, but may now consider allowing curtailment of campaigns.

“There was a strong recommendation given to finish domestic top division and cup competitions, but some special cases will be heard once guidelines concerning participation to European competitions – in case of a cancelled league – have been developed,” a statement from UEFA read.

UEFA said any decisions on those guidelines would be announced after Thursday’s meeting of its executive committee.

The Scottish Professional Football League board has the right to make a decision on bringing the Premiership season to an end but is expected to consult with clubs before going ahead.

However, this announcement from UEFA would appear to open the door to the Scottish 2019/20 top-flight campaign being brought to an early end.

Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon expressed concerns on Monday about the possibility of even staging behind-closed-doors matches because of social distancing rules.

The Belgian Pro League announced at the start of the month that it was cancelling its season, with Club Brugge declared champions. The decision is yet to be ratified.

A similar decision looks set to be taken by neighbours Holland after their Government decided that professional football would be banned until September 1 due to Covid-19.

The KNVB “intends not to continue playing the 2019/20 competition” as a result of that decision and will consult with UEFA, “after which the decision will be taken” on the cancellation of the Eredivisie and other leagues.

The Dutch football association, clubs and other parties will discuss the consequences on Friday, but in Sweden the Allsvenskan and Superettan – the top two tiers – are scheduled to start on June 14 following a meeting on Tuesday.

In England, Premier League clubs are still exploring scheduling models for how they could complete the season.

Failure to do so would prove very costly. It has been reported that Sky Sports would not seek a rebate in the event of a curtailed campaign, but that would still leave the clubs owing a collective £370million.

The scenarios presented to the associations were all understood to culminate in the Champions League and Europa League taking place in August, with the final of the former believed to be pencilled in for August 29.

The format of the remainder of those competitions – for instance whether ties remain at two legs or drop to one – is entirely dependent on how much time is available for the matches to be played.

Meanwhile, FAI interim chief executive Gary Owens said UEFA has indicated that the postponed European Championship play-offs would get under way in October.

“There has been a slight move on that,” Owens told FAI TV as the Republic of Ireland wait to see when their fixture against Slovakia will be scheduled.

“Originally, we thought it may well be November. It now looks like that the semi-final is the preferred option in October. They don’t want to have the semi-final and the final of the play-offs in the one month.

“So, it looks like the Nations League matches will be in September and October, with the semi-final play-off in October and the final play-off in November.”

Northern Ireland and Scotland are also in Euros play-off action, facing Bosnia and Israel respectively.

Meanwhile, League Two club stakeholders discussed the continuing coronavirus situation on Tuesday.

The PA news agency understands there remains an overall desire to try and finish the season, although some believe there needs to be a deadline to work to.

Play in League Two would only resume in line with Government regulations, while Tuesday’s meeting had no crossover to their League One counterparts.

Forest Green chairman Dale Vince, whose side are 11th in the fourth tier standings, believes capping wages is an important step to take.

“Seems to be lots of interest in the EFL salary cap I’m recommending,” he wrote on Twitter

“Happens already in the USA – it’s surprising to find because its so, well, socialist in nature – it’s not the dog eat dog approach of capitalism – its a level playing field to create more sustainable competition.”

Amnesty International warns Premier League over Newcastle deal

Amnesty International has written to the Premier League saying it “risks becoming a patsy” unless it takes a serious look at Saudi Arabia’s human rights record with regard to the takeover of Newcastle.

The north-east club are reportedly on the verge of being sold to a Saudi-backed consortium which involves Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for around £300million.

It was reported on Tuesday that a non-refundable deposit of £17million has already been paid to current owner Mike Ashley as part of the deal.

The Premier League must decide if the new owners meet the criteria in its owners and directors test, and Amnesty insists unless the league provides thorough justification for its decision to approve the takeover, it will damage its own reputation.

In a letter from Amnesty UK director Kate Allen to Premier League chief executive Richard Masters, she wrote: “So long as these questions (concerning Saudi Arabia’s human rights record) remain unaddressed, the Premier League is putting itself at risk of becoming a patsy of those who want to use the glamour and prestige of Premier League football to cover up actions that are deeply immoral, in breach of international law and at odds with the values of the Premier League and the global footballing community.”

Saudi Arabia has been heavily criticised over its human rights record, with Amnesty pointing to the imprisonment and torture of government critics and the execution of others following unfair trials.

In a statement separate to the letter sent to Masters, Allen said: “The coronavirus crisis has already thrown a spotlight on football and its need to treat players and staff fairly, and now there’s a danger that the pandemic could obscure the need for a cool, measured and genuinely ethical decision over this Newcastle deal.

“All businesses need to safeguard against any possible links to human rights violations, and English football is no different.

“This is more than just a financial transaction – it’s an image-building exercise that draws on the prestige of the Premier League and the passion of Newcastle United’s fanbase.

“Whether or not this deal goes ahead, we’re calling on Newcastle United staff and fans to familiarise themselves with the dire human rights situation in Saudi Arabia and be prepared to speak out about it.

“At the very least, the Premier League should make a clear statement over how its owners and directors test has been applied in this case, and what assessment has been made of Saudi Arabia’s human rights record under Mohammad bin Salman’s leadership.”

Porch Pirates Steal Ashes Of Colorado Man's Father

FORT COLLINS, CO – The ashes of a Colorado man’s late father were stolen from the porch of his home, after being delivered in a box in late January.

Austin Barker posted a notice on Craig’s list offering a $500 reward, and posted a sign in front of his residence in Fort Collins begging for the return of his father’s ashes, which he said his cousin sent from the East Coast to be delivered on Jan. 26. But Baker was out of town, and someone stole the 1′ by 2′ box containing the cremated remains of Art Barker, 62, who died of bladder cancer Dec. 23, 2018 in Waterbury, Connecticut, the Fort Collins Coloardoan reported.

For Austin Barker, the loss was particularly hard because he and his father had been estranged for 25 years and then reunited about eight years ago on Facebook. They reunited in Boston recently, and Art Barker was diagnosed with stage-four cancer a year ago.

“Someone must have thought [the package] was valuable,” Barker told the Coloradoan. “I know it was incredibly valuable to me but not really to anybody else.”

The package was stolen from the front of a house on South Howes Street near Colorado State University.

“A package was taken from the porch that contained the cremated remains of a loved one. We will pay you for the return of this package, no questions asked,” Barker posted on Craigslist.

“Knowing that once you open the package, you know what’s inside of it, I just don’t understand why you wouldn’t try to get them back,” Barker told Fox 31.

Barker is begging for whoever stole the box to return it. He had promised his father he would spread his ashes on a hike with friends up Windom Peak, near Durango, he said.

“I just wanted that closure, you know… conquer a 14er with him and get to the top and let him rest in peace on top of a mountain,” Baker told the TV station.

“I’m not mad. I’m not going to press charges. I just want someone to sneak the ashes over some night to my house, leave them at the post office or drop them at the police station. I just want them back,” he told the Coloradoan.

Day Care Worker Said Girl Fell; Horrifying Video Shows Otherwise

ST. LOUIS, MO — When a 3-year-old girl went home with a massive gash on her head, a day care worker reportedly told parents she fell. But a terrifying video paints a much uglier picture — it appears to show one of the workers grabbing the girl’s arm, dragging her a couple steps and then throwing her across the room. The child’s head then slams into a cabinet and she comes to a rest on the floor, clearly in pain.

An unintentional injury form filled out by workers at Brighter Day Care and Preschool and obtained by news station KTVI described the girl’s injuries as a bump on the head when she fell onto a carpet. The form also said 911 was called and that a dispatcher told the workers not to put an ice pack on the girl.

The girl was taken to a hospital, where she received seven stitches to close the wound, according to KTVI.

The family has hired attorney Jennifer Hansen. Hansen sent Patch a copy of the video and wrote in an emailed statement that the girl, whose name wasn’t released, is recovering from her injury.

“This sweet little girl is getting lots of love and support from her family while she heals from her injuries,” said Hansen. “Her family hopes that the release of the surveillance footage will result in justice for this child and ensure that other children are not harmed by the very people entrusted to keep them safe.”

Hansen told KTVI the day care waited five days to watch the footage and allowed the worker accused of throwing the girl to continue employment during that time.

“One of the more egregious aspects of this case is that the daycare director told the family that she did not watch the surveillance tape until the family was with her,” said Hansen.

The teacher’s name has not been released because she has not yet been charged, Hansen told Patch. She has reportedly been fired.

Police and state child care workers are investigating, according to The Associated Press.

The day care center is located off Cedarwood Avenue and Sexton Place in Pine Lawn, a suburb of St. Louis. An attorney for the day care’s director said teachers and staff are trained properly, according to The AP. The center also says it tries to foster a safe environment.

A woman who answered the phone at the day care center said no one was authorized to comment.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand Announces Presidential Campaign

NEW YORK — New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand officially announced her 2020 presidential campaign Sunday morning.

Her formal announcement comes two months after she announced an exploratory committee, followed by travel around the country to meet with voters. The announcement came in a two and a half minute video on Twitter, and was a stark rebuke of President Trump, saying his governing does not live up to the “land of the brave” suggested in the national anthem.

“Will brave win?” she asks, before saying, “Well, it hasn’t always, and it isn’t right now. Brave doesn’t pit people against each other. Brave doesn’t put money over lives. Brave doesn’t spread hate. Cloud truth. Build a wall. That’s what fear does.”

Gillibrand will make her first speech as a candidate March 24, in front of Trump International Hotel (this is not the building Trump lives in when he is in New York).

Gillibrand is the latest in a long list of Democrats to officially throw their hat in the 2020 ring. First appointed to the Senate when Hillary Clinton vacated the seat in 2009, Gillibrand was reelected in 2012 and 2018.

On l’aurait abusé.
