Everton boss Ancelotti to call on Napoli success to beat Liverpool

Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti has urged his players to seize a “fantastic opportunity” when they face neighbours Liverpool in the FA Cup on Sunday.

Few will fancy the Toffees to win at Anfield given Liverpool’s complete dominance so far this season but Ancelotti – the only manager to get the better of Jurgen Klopp this campaign – sees no reason for fear.

“It is a fantastic challenge but also a fantastic opportunity,” the Italian said.

“We are going to play against the best team in this moment, they are world champions so congratulations to them, but this is a fantastic challenge for us.”

Ancelotti guided Napoli to a 2-0 Champions League victory over Liverpool in September, taking a point from a 1-1 draw at Anfield in November.

Asked the secret to beating Klopp, the 60-year-old offered a shrug and a smile. “Score more goals,” he said.

“Everyone knows how Liverpool play,” he added. “They are a fantastic team, fantastic on the counter-attack, fantastic in transition and in recovery of the ball and quick attacking. You have to do the perfect game to beat them.

“You cannot defend for 90 minutes and we do not want to defend for 90 minutes. We want to have the possibility to play our football.”

Ancelotti, an FA Cup winner with Chelsea in 2010, said it was unlike any other cup competition in football.

“The FA Cup here is completely different to others, it is different to Italy. The fact that it is the oldest competition in the world gives it a really special atmosphere.

“There are a lot of surprises in this competition so for us it’s a really exciting moment, so we have confidence to do our best.”

Rio explains why Liverpool players will be ‘scared’

Rio Ferdinand claims Liverpool will be “scared to get excited” despite being overwhelming favourites to win the Premier League title for the first time this season.

Mo Salah and Sadio Mane scored as Sheffield United were swept aside at Anfield on Thursday evening meaning Liverpool will go a full 365 days unbeaten – with their last loss coming on January 3 2019, as they went down 2-1 to Manchester City.

Second-placed Leicester are now 13 points behind Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp’s men have a game in hand over their rivals.

But Ferdinand – who lifted the Premier League trophy six times with Manchester United – says Klopp’s relatively inexperienced side will not want to tempt fate.

“James Milner is the only one who has won a Premier League title in that dressing room so a lot will be looking at him, but a lot of them will using the manager as that yard stick, and saying we don’t want to get carried away,” the former United and England defender told BT Sport.

“Everyone does look at it and say it’s mundane, but you’re scared. I was scared to get excited. I sense that a little bit with these guys.

“You’re confident but you don’t want to tempt fate, you don’t want to bring yourself any bad luck.

“This club has gone 30 years without winning a league title so it’s all those little things that are building up and the pressure that comes from within the city.”

Man Utd legend Giggs speaks out on Pogba: ‘I feel sorry for Ole’

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs believes Paul Pogba will leave the club before the start of next season and thinks Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be better off getting rid of the World Cup winner.

Pogba has started just six games in all competitions this season with a persistent ankle problem further delaying his return until February, after it was confirmed he required surgery.

And speculation over his future at Old Trafford has continued to run wild. Solskjaer has publicly supported Pogba, but his former teammate Giggs doesn’t believe the midfielder has shown enough consistency.

When asked by Premier League Productions whether he wanted or expected to see Pogba at his old club next season, Giggs said: “No, no.

“I feel sorry for Ole because he’s got to continuously answer questions on Paul Pogba.

“I say United are on a good run at the moment and that’s without him. He’s come on and done okay in a few games but it’s disappointing at the moment.

“He is a talent, we talk about him all the time, he’s not consistently done it for United.

“Ole can only deal with the players that are fit at the moment.

“To continuously answer questions on a player that is rumoured to be leaving, to be injured, to be elsewhere when he should be perhaps in Carrington training, is frustrating to a manager.”

Klopp on Liverpool injury blow: ‘That’s not cool’

Liverpool re-established their 13-point lead at the top of the Premier League – having gone a year unbeaten after the 2-0 victory over Sheffield United – but it came at a cost.

The Reds lost midfielder Naby Keita to a groin injury in the warm-up which leaves Jurgen Klopp with just 12 senior outfield players, plus new signing Takumi Minamino, and a number of youth teamers – three of whom were on the bench against the Blades – for Sunday’s Merseyside derby FA Cup tie at home to Everton.

Liverpool have played 33 matches so far this season, 11 of which have come in the last 30 days, and it is beginning to take its toll on the league leaders – who equalled the best start to a season by any top-flight team with their 19th victory in 20 games.

Keita joined defenders Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren and Nathaniel Clyne, midfielders Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Xherdan Shaqiri, Fabinho and forward Rhian Brewster on the sidelines after injuring himself in the pre-match warm-up.

“I don’t know exactly what he has, it was his groin, but I can say he won’t be involved against Everton,” said Klopp.

“That makes it 12 senior players we have, plus the kids. That’s not cool.

“I have no clue how it happened, I think it was the last shot during the warm-up, he came in limping.

“Everybody who has played football has had this kind of injury, it’s not nice. It’s painful. I don’t know how long it will take, but he won’t be ready for Sunday.”

An early goal from Mohamed Salah was backed up by one from Sadio Mane midway through the second half in a match which was at times looked laboured despite Liverpool racking up the most passes – 874 – they have ever made in a Premier League match.

“There is space for improvement. How you deal with it in the headlines I couldn’t care less. We don’t see it as a threat for other teams. For us, it’s important that we just care about us,” Klopp added.

“We can do things better and we have to. But I saw some things tonight that we did better than the last game, for example.

“There was no party after the game. It’s really an intense period of the year, so it’s not like somebody wants to go out tonight and have a few drinks, they’re all happy when they’re in bed – so am I, by the way.

“The players know they want to do better. But for tonight, our performance was as good as anything. It was just really good. That makes me quite happy.”

United never got close to their best and their manager Chris Wilder admits they got off lightly with a 2-0 defeat.

“From our point of view I was disappointed because I don’t think we laid a glove on them. I think the scoreline flattered us,” he said.

“I thought Dean Henderson (the goalkeeper) was the difference between it being three, four or five.

“When you come here you have to try to get a foothold in the game and we couldn’t have got off to a worse start. It gave them a big lift and then I thought it was comfortable for Liverpool.

“If there is ever an example for young players – and our players – as to why they are world champions, why they are European champions and look like being Premier League winners as well it is the basic stuff they had to do tonight which they did miles better than us.

“We had to do that a lot better tonight than we did to stand a chance.”

At least 16 left dead after Mexican prison football match sparks riot

Reports suggest that the game provoked a deadly clash between incarcerated members of the drug trafficking Gulf cartel and the Zetas

A prison riot in Mexico reportedly provoked by an inter-inmate football match left at least 16 dead and five wounded, authorities have confirmed.

The Centre for Social Reintegration (Cereso) of Cieneguillas Prison, located in the state of Zacatecas, was rocked on Tuesday by bloody clashes between prisoners.

And the spark for the riot appears to have been a game of football, organised between imprisoned members of two rival drug cartels: the Gulf cartel, and a faction of the Zetas.

According to Zacatecas security secretary, Ismael Camberos Hernandez, several weapons were confiscated in the aftermath of the clash, which authorities believe were smuggled into the prison during Tuesday’s visiting hours.

Hernandez added that searches over the weekend had not found any guns among inmates.

The state security agency explained that the deadly battle commenced around 2.30 pm on Tuesday, with the prison brought back under control just under three hours later.

“The Cereso emergency systems were activated, a fight between inmates with firearms was reported,” Camberos told reporters.

“Gunshots were heard and the state police and Metropol immediately began an operation to control the fight, which the centre’s guards were already trying to quell.”

Fifteen of the deceased were killed at the prison, with another passing away after being rushed to hospital due to the extent of his injuries.

Camberos went on to reveal that as well as gunshot wounds, victims were also stabbed and hit with blunt objects.

No guards or security officers were hurt in the melee, while one prisoner was detained in possession of a firearm and three more guns were later found on the premises.

At the time of writing, no motive has been named regarding the cause of the riot, but clashes between rival gangs have taken place on numerous occasions in Mexican prisons in recent years.

Nueva Leon state’s Topo Chico facility, which was closed earlier this year after countless complaints concerning sub-standard living conditions for inmates, was infamous for violence within its walls.

In 2012, three prisoners were stabbed to death in targeted attacks, while four years later 49 prisoners lost their lives in another bloody battle between the Gulf cartel and the Zetas.

Mexico still pushing for joint Concacaf, Conmebol 'Copa Continental' despite lack of talks

Mexican FA president Yon de Luisa says a competition like the Copa America Centenario would be critical for Mexico’s growth

While there are no current negotiations between the confederations, Federacion Mexicana de Futbol president Yon de Luisa says he will continue to push for a combined tournament between national teams from Concacaf and Conmebol in the new year.

Concacaf the governing body for North America, Central America and the Caribbean, joined forces with Conmebol, the governing body for South America, in a 2016 tournament that took place in the United States. Everything pointed toward the groups putting on a similar event this summer, but negotiations were unsuccessful and Conmebol will host a Copa America with South American teams plus two guests from the Asian Football Confederation this summer.

That’s a difficult pill for Mexico to swallow, with El Tri feeling it needs more competition than it’s currently getting in Concacaf, and De Luisa said he will lobby Concacaf officials to once again look to pull off a combined tournament.

“On the level of possibility for calendar questions, that part already has been resolved. Today more then ever, the possibility is open. On the level of negotiations with Concacaf and Conmebol, today there aren’t any,” De Luisa told Record.

“It’s on us to keep pushing. I’ve been saying for more than 10 years and now as the responsible party for the country’s national team and with the vote we have within Concacaf and the close relationship we have with (Concacaf president Victor) Montagliani, every time we meet – which we’ll do this very week, we’re going to have a meeting to share advice in Miami – and once again we’ll say that for us it would be very important to have this Copa Continental with Mexico not being invited to the Copa America but if we have continental tournament where teams from Conmebol and teams from Concacaf have a great tournament like we had in 2016.”

That tournament ended in frustration for Mexico on the field, with an infamous 7-0 loss to Chile in the quarter finals, but was a success off the pitch for nearly everyone involved as the highest-attended tournament in Copa America history.

However, the relationship between Mexico and South American officials seems to have strained in recent years. Mexican clubs are not currently taking part in the Copa Libertadores as they did from 1996-2016, and rather than invite Mexico for this year’s Copa America, the invited teams are Qatar and Australia. Qatar also took part in the 2019 Copa America, along with Japan.

If no combined Concacaf-Conmebol tournament materializes, Mexico may seek South American competition on its own. Mexico manager Tata Martino has said Mexico must play better competition to reach its goal of finishing in the top eight of the 2022 World Cup.

While El Tri has a deal in place with Soccer United Marketing to play a certain number of games in the United States and also has an increasing number of Concacaf commitments between Nations League and World Cup qualification, the national team also anticipates finding a way to play South American teams.

“One of the positive things Mr. Martino presented in the last meeting with (Liga MX) owners was, ‘Gentlemen, don’t be surprised if we’re go play more games in South America. That rather than bring in hundreds of opponents to Mexico or the United States we should go to their houses,'” De Luisa said.

“We might play against Colombia in Colombia, we might play against Ecuador in Ecuador. We have to require our boys to play games that are more difficult. Why? So that when we’re in the group stage of the World Cup, it’s more natural to have that kind of competition.”

Mexico closed out 2018 with a pair of friendly matches in Argentina, but encounters outside of the U.S., where Mexico enjoys home-team status, or Mexico are rare. Of 17 matches in 2019, El Tri played outside North America only for Nations League away games in Bermuda and Panama.

The Nations League is promising for many of Mexico’s Concacaf rivals, and De Luisa said it “without a doubt, is going to help the level of various national teams grow.” However, it also cuts down on the number of FIFA dates in which Mexico is free to schedule friendly matches.

El Tri will open 2020 with a pair of friendly matches in the United States, playing March 26 in Charlotte, North Carolina and March 29 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
