China Sentences Christian Leader To 9 Years In Prison

Wang Yi, a leader in one of the most well-known Christian congregations in China, has been quietly sentenced to nine years in prison, according to a statement on the website of the Intermediate People’s Court of Chengdu Municipality.

The sentencing is the latest incident in an ongoing crackdown on organized religion in China. Early Rain Covenant Church, which Wang founded in 2008, attracted about 500 followers and was considered one of the most influential “underground churches” in China, operating independently of the state.

Wang was charged with “subverting state power.” He, his wife, Jiang Rong, and about 100 congregants were detained last December after police raided the church during a Sunday evening service. Authorities said the church violated religious regulations because it was not registered with the government. Another prominent Protestant congregation with nearly 1,500 followers, Zion Church in Beijing, was raided and shut down last September.

Most of Early Rain’s congregants were eventually released after a period of days or months. Several congregants have since escaped to Taiwan and are applying for asylum in the U.S.

Until last year, Early Rain was one of the most influential Protestant “underground” congregations, which are technically illegal because they remain unregistered and out of government control. Scholars estimate that of China’s 60 million or so Christians, about half attend unregistered churches rather than their state-sanctioned counterparts.

Last week, speculation that Wang was secretly being tried in the southwestern city of Chengdu swirled online after supporters published pictures on social media showing heightened security surrounding Chengdu’s courthouse.

China has previously sentenced prominent dissidents or activists in closed trials over holidays such as Christmas or announced multiple sentencings on the same day in an effort to minimize media attention.

A former human rights lawyer and blogger, Wang Yi converted to Christianity in 2005. His work as an activist earned him an invitation to the White House the following year, where Wang met President George W. Bush as part of a delegation of Chinese figures advocating for greater religious freedoms and civil liberties.

China nominally guarantees freedom of religion. But in the past six years, it has arrested believers, shut down several prominent Christian churches and detained or imprisoned hundreds of thousands of Muslims in the western region of Xinjiang.

Liverpool break Man United record with new Nike kit deal

Liverpool have announced a British record kit deal with new sponsors Nike.

Their partnership with the American sportswear brand will commence in June 2020 and see Liverpool outstrip the £75m Manchester United earn per year through adidas.

Liverpool stand to bring in £80m from the multi-year contract, thus making it the third most valuable in all of European football.

Only Barcelona (£100m) and Real Madrid (£98m) draw more per season from their respective deals, with Liverpool using their status as world and European champions to leverage an improvement on their current deal with New Balance, who were ‘desperate’ to maintain the relationship.

‘Liverpool Football Club is delighted to announce Nike, the world’s leading footwear and apparel company, as its official kit supplier from the 2020-21 season,’ read a statement on the club’s official website.

‘The partnership coincides with our move into a new, state-of-the-art training facility in Kirkby for the 2020-21 season, a project that includes investment in improved sport facilities for the local community.’

Liverpool managing director and chief commercial officer Billy Hogan added: “Our iconic kit is a key part of our history and identity. We welcome Nike into the LFC family as our new official kit supplier and expect them to be an incredible partner for the club, both at home and globally as we continue to expand our fanbase.

“As a brand, Nike reflects our ambitions for growth, and we look forward to working with them to bring fans new and exciting products.”

Chelsea given boost as £80m January target switches agents

Wilfried Zaha has teamed up with renowned agent Pini Zahavi to help realise his ‘desire to win major honours’.

Zaha has been expected to leave Crystal Palace in each of the last two summer transfer windows, signing a new contract after failing to move in 2018 and handing in a transfer request to try and force the situation last year.

The winger has attracted interest from Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton and Napoli of late, with his recent decision to part with Will Salthouse and link up with Zahavi an indication that he still sees his future elsewhere.

Sky Sports say Zaha craves silverware, with a Community Shield win and FA Cup runners-up medal the closest he has come to team glory.

They stress that ‘a move in the summer is more likely’ than in January, with the prospect of leaving the Premier League also entertained.

The news of his link with Zahavi could be a boost to Chelsea, with the Israeli and club owner Roman Abramovich sharing a strong and fruitful relationship.

Arteta ‘thrilled’ as Aubameyang underlines Arsenal commitment

Click:HPMC

Mikel Arteta was pleased to see his Arsenal side overcome a tough FA Cup test against Leeds but was even happier to read Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s programme notes.

The striker was not involved in the Gunners’ 1-0 win over the Championship side, settled by Reiss Nelson’s second-half strike, but contributed to a good evening by committing his future to the club and saying speculation regarding a January exit was brought about by people “making things up”.

He said in his column: “I am the Arsenal captain. I love this club. I am committed to it and desperate to bring it back to the top, where it belongs.”

That was music to Arteta’s ears – particular after his missive about the importance of captaincy and leadership – and the boss is happy the story can finally be put to bed.

“I was thrilled about that and really happy,” he said.

“His commitment since the day I walked through that door has been phenomenal, the work he has been putting in, his attitude around the place with the players.

“He has done it (ended speculation), I do it, I want him here and I am so happy with him, so hopefully that is the end of the story.”

OGS: Man Utd ‘the biggest club in the world…in our own heads’

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists Manchester United believe they are still the biggest club in the world even if they are not currently the best team in their own city.

The Red Devils have to redress the local balance first – starting with a Carabao Cup semi-final first leg at home against their neighbours – before they can even begin to think about re-establishing themselves as the top team in England, Europe and the rest of the planet.

And while the process has been inconsistent under the Norwegian, who as a former Red Devils player knew only superiority over City and the rest of the country, he is confident it will come.

“It is a different time. When the owners came in at City you knew they were going to go for it,” he said.

“I’m never surprised by anything in football and with what they have done they deserve to be where they are.

“We are still in our own heads the biggest club in the world so of course we want to get back to where we were. It’s going to take time.

“You have to go for it at this club, that’s what we are here for, to take on the challenges that are given to us.

“We are Man United. We have been up and we’ve been down but we’ve always come back.”

Why Bayern Munich signing striker-keeper Nubel is bad news for Neuer

Germany’s No.1 is already under pressure at international level from Marc-Andre ter Stegen and now his club have acquired a top young shot-stopper

Bayern Munich have agreed a deal to sign Schalke’s No.1, a sweeper-keeper who is as confident with his feet as he is with his hands.

That was true in June 2011 when the Bavarians poached Manuel Neuer and is true again in 2020, as the Bundesliga’s most successful side have once again convinced Germany’s best young goalkeeper to reject a new contract in Gelsenkirchen and move to Munich.

After months of transfer speculation, Bayern opened the transfer window by confirming the signing of Alexander Nubel, who will move to the Allianz Arena in July when his Schalke contract expires.

The 23-year-old shot-stopper has long been called ‘the next Neuer’, as their stories are similar, with both breaking through at Schalke by unseating a much more experienced player to become first-choice goalkeeper.

Neuer has long been known as the world’s best sweeper-keeper and his successor at Bayern shares this trait, having played as a striker for Paderborn’s academy team.

Nubel’s underage coach Marco Cirrincione admitted that it was just chance which led to Nubel becoming a goalkeeper.

Paderborn’s youth side were in need of a back-up goalkeeper and asked Nubel to deputise as he had shown some promise with his hands, despite being one of their most important attackers.

“In preparation for the under-13 season, one of our goalkeepers was surprised that there was so much training. He preferred to play table tennis and that’s why he stopped playing football,” Cirrincione told Goal and Spox.

Nubel shone between the sticks, but he was still needed in attack, so the team came to an agreement where he would play 75 per cent of games up front and the rest in goal.

“Nevertheless, he was the third-highest scorer in our team, with seven goals and six assists,” Cirrincione continued. “I remember clearly that he changed positions against Verl at 0-0 at half-time. We won 5-0 and Alex even scored two goals.”

This changed to a 50-50 split between playing in goal and as a forward at under-14 level, but soon the ‘striker-keeper’ was playing every game in goal, which brought him to the attention of Schalke.

At Schalke, he was initially third choice, behind Ralf Fahrmann and veteran Michael Gspurning, but by the end of the 2015-16 season, he was on the bench and came on as a late substitute in the last game of the campaign to make his Royal Blues debut at 19.

“He always stayed cool and didn’t go crazy,” Cirrincione said. “In the shadow of Fahrmann, he was able to see how professional football works and then took off himself.”

Nubel was happy to bide his time at Schalke, playing just one league game over the next two seasons. In 2018-19, he surpassed Fahrmann and became the undisputed starter and then was handed the captain’s armband ahead of this season.

At Bayern, he will go back to being an understudy, but Neuer might not be as quick to step aside as Fahrmann was. The four-time world goalkeeper of the year has refused to give up a single minute of playing time for Germany to help Marc-Andre ter Stegen gain international experience.

Neuer demands to start every game and has no intention of watching anyone from the bench, not even Ter Stegen, who is widely recognised as one of the best players in the world in his position.

Germany head coach Joachim Low is repeatedly asked about giving Ter Stegen opportunities, and hinted at more rotation in 2019.

However, Neuer has proven undroppable in competitive matches, starting against both Netherlands and Northern Ireland in September, even after conceding four goals at home to the former.

Low’s decision to stick with Neuer despite promises of more minutes for his understudy has annoyed Ter Stegen, who sparked a public war of words over his reserve status.

“It’s not easy to find an explanation,” the Barcelona star told reporters. “This trip with the national team has been a tough blow for me.”

That caused Neuer to hit back at his goalkeeping rival, saying that Ter Stegen was not being a team player by sulking in the media about his lack of playing time.

“I think we’re a team and we should do all we can to be a team,” Neuer told Sky Germany. “I don’t know if that (Ter Stegen’s statement) helps us as a team.”

This spilled over into the Bayern Munich boardroom, where outgoing club president Uli Hoeness claimed he would stop his club’s players from joining the Germany squad if Neuer was dropped.

Hoeness’s replacement as president is Oliver Kahn, who was in the same situation as Neuer at Bayern in the early 2000s. The then-Germany No.1 was the experienced veteran while academy graduate Michael Rensing was seen as his long-term successor for both club and country.

Rensing made his Bundesliga debut at 19 in 2004, but Kahn’s longevity saw him play just 13 games over the next four seasons.

His mentor finally retired in 2008, but Rensing’s first season as first choice did not go as planned. He had not developed as the club hoped, having failed to gain experience due to a lack of playing time and four games into the 2009-10 season, he was dropped in favour of 35-year-old Hans-Jorg Butt.

“I have already experienced everything in football, but one thing is clear to me: there is nothing more for him at Bayern,” Kahn told AZ in 2009 after Rensing had lost his starting spot.

“There were efforts in the summer to get Manuel Neuer from Schalke, which shows they do not trust him.”

The following summer, Bayern signed Neuer and Rensing was allowed leave on a free transfer. He moved to Cologne and then to Bayer Leverkusen where he played just two league games.

He currently wears the No.1 shirt for Fortuna Dusseldorf, but only as a squad number, as he is just their third-choice goalkeeper. Despite the hype, he never played for Germany.

If Bayern want Nubel to be a success, they need him to develop by playing matches. The club have no intention of loaning him out, but Neuer also has no intention of warming the pine while a younger player warms their gloves.

Neuer’s statements following the announcement of Nubel’s arrival also back this up. Although he is 33, the World Cup winner is confident he can continue to be first choice for club and country for many years to come, calling Nubel one for “the future” rather than right now.

“I am an athlete and a professional. I always want to play,” he told reporters. “It is not my decision as a player, but that of the coach. It will always be like this.

“The signing is a decision by the club with regard to the next few years. He is a good goalkeeper. But we also have very good goalkeepers here.

“Sven Ulreich did a very good job when he replaced me. Alex Nubel is a very good goalkeeper for the future.

“I can’t put myself in [his situation]. But I was a player who always wanted to play, always wanted to be No.1.”

Neuer once said that Nubel can become Germany No.1 someday: “He needs the experience that he will definitely get, but he’s already developed really well.”

Now, the only thing that stands in the way of that is Neuer himself.

Alaba not for sale, insists Bayern boss Flick amid Chelsea rumours

The full-back is reportedly a top target at Stamford Bridge, but chances of a deal being struck this month are slim

Bayern Munich coach Hansi Flick has dismissed reports linking David Alaba to Chelsea, insisting the defender will not be going anywhere this transfer window.

The Blues have been linked with a number of players following the lift on their transfer ban this January, but the Bayern Munich defender will not heading to west London.

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard had reportedly shown a strong interest in the 27-year-old left-back, with a bid of £60 million (€70m/$78m) rumoured.

The Austrian would be a welcomed addition at Stamford Bridge as they look to prioritise the signing of a left-sided defender this window after also being linked with Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell.

However, Bayern boss Flick has ruled out any possible move in January.

“Alaba is not for sale in the winter,” said Flick speaking at a press conference from the club’s training camp in Doha.

“Alaba is doing very well at centre-back at the moment. He can lead a team, he showed that.

“This is the criteria the leader of the defence has to fulfil.”

Alaba will again been the subject of transfer speculation in the summer if he does not decide to sign a new contract with the German champions.

Regarded as one of the best left-backs in the world, Alaba has 18 months left on his contract at the Allianz Arena and would likely need to sign a deal if Bayern were looking to make any money from the player.

Flick has also spoken on the speculation surrounding centre back Jerome Boateng and a move to Arsenal.

The long serving defender has been linked to the Gunners following an enquiry into a the value of a transfer fee, loan possibilities and the player’s wages according to reports in Germany. But again, Flick has outlined his intentions to keep the player at the club.

“Jerome is a Bayern player,” the coach added.

“He has trained well during the winter break. I can’t wait to see what the next few weeks will be like. I’m not worrying about if he’ll leave the club or not. I can’t imagine that at the moment.”

Bayern currently sit third in the Bundesliga, four points behind leaders RB Leipzig after a disappointing start to the season.

The squad return to competitive action against Hertha Berlin on January 19, following the German winter break.
