Liverpool assistant boss Pep Lijnders has explained how the club “kidnapped him” in 2014 after holding talks with Manchester United.

Lijnders returned to Anfield in 2018 as Jurgen Klopp’s right-hand man after a brief spell in sole charge of Dutch side NEC Nijmegen.

The Dutchman started off coaching the under-16s at Anfield before his move to the Netherlands, helping the club promote and integrate members of the academy into the first team.

Following a breakdown in talks with Man Utd, Liverpool beat Ajax to Lijnders in 2014 when Michael Beale, the Merseyside club’s academy boss, convinced him to leave Porto for Anfield.

Lijnders claims Liverpool “kidnapped him” at the time but admits he thought it was the “perfect” move for him.

“On the Monday I was supposed to go to Ajax to make the final negotiations with them. I had to call my wife and tell her there had been a change of plan,” Lijnders told The Athletic.

“Michael said: ‘You’re coming in the car to Liverpool with us.’ When Liverpool said I could have the under-16s and under-15s, I thought ‘this is perfect’.”

On Klopp taking over from Brendan Rodgers, Lijnders added: “When Jurgen got announced, I had a good feeling. I thought it would work well but you can never be 100 per cent sure.

“To coach is easy but to know what to coach is much more difficult. Jurgen had a way of coaching and exercises which were close to my own.”

 

Micah Richards says he feels sorry for Marcus Rashford at Manchester United and insists he’d be better off at Manchester City.

The England international has bagged 12 Premier League goals in 21 appearances this term as United have struggled to find consistency.

The Red Devils lost 3-1 at home to neighbours City in the semi-final of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night with Rashford scoring United’s only goal of the match.

That second-half strike gave Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men a slim chance of progressing with the second leg still to come at the Etihad Stadium.

And Richards, who used to play for City, thinks Rashford would score at least 30 goals in Pep Guardiola’s side.

“I feel sorry for Rashford,” Richards told Sky Sports.

“At City he’s scoring 30-40 goals. With Martial and James, United look good on the counter. But sometimes the counter isn’t on.

“You need to be able to pick holes in teams and United can’t do that.

“You look at City’s midfield compared to United’s and that’s no disrespect to them. De Bruyne first thought is ‘let’s play a forward pass.’”

Brendan Rodgers has urged Leicester to make more history and reach the Carabao Cup final.

They host Aston Villa in the semi-final first leg on Wednesday as overwhelming favourites to make it to Wembley.

The Foxes last won the League Cup in 2000 when they beat Tranmere 2-1.

It remains their last major final having reached the League Cup showpiece in 1997 and 1999, winning one and losing the other.

And, despite a shock Premier League title in 2016, Rodgers wants some fresh memories.

“I’m aware the club hasn’t been to a final for 20 years so let’s get there then,” he said.

“Let’s not be worried too much about the past. Let’s create this new history but we know we’re going to have to play well to get there.

“It’s always nice when you have something tangible to show for your progress.

“The players have been amazing so if you can do that it would be great. You can still do some great work as a team and as a club and not win but our ambition is to win.

“Any team that wins anything you have to move onto the next focus and target.”

 

 

Daniel Amartey is out with an ankle injury while Wes Morgan is sidelined with a groin problem after coming off in the 2-0 FA Cup win over Wigan on Saturday.

Jamie Vardy (calf) is fit and Filip Benkovic is available despite suffering a knee injury at the weekend.

Rodgers is expected to name a strong side as they look for a first-leg advantage.

He added: “It’s important to stay calm, you don’t need to magnify the importance of the game. Every game you go into you go with the intent to be aggressive, playing well and winning.

“It’s the same preparation, very calm, full of details and how can we exploit any weaknesses Aston Villa may have.”

Meanwhile, Rodgers insisted there is no change in James Maddison’s contract situation with talks continuing over a new deal.

“It’s just ongoing. James is a player we are keen to keep here and help us on this journey,” he said, with Maddison linked to Manchester United.

“James and his reps are speaking with the club which is great.

“These things take time but his level has not dropped. He is playing at a really high level.”

The Norwegian has asked his side to remember the famous fightback they pulled off last year when he was still the club’s interim manager

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has called for his team to summon the spirit of last season’s famous comeback against Paris Saint-Germain after a first-leg defeat to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup.

United fell 3-1 to their city rivals at Old Trafford on Tuesday, as Pep Guardiola’s men took a commanding lead ahead of the semi-final second leg at the Etihad Stadium on January 29.

Solskjaer’s side were undone by a disastrous opening to the game that saw them concede three first-half goals at home for the first time since May 1997.

Bernardo Silva, Riyad Mahrez and an own goal from Andreas Pereira put City up by three and led to plenty of frustration for the home side’s manager, though United did put in an improved second-half performance and scored a goal through Marcus Rashford.

“From their first goal and especially the second we struggled to get to grips with them,” Solskjaer told Sky Sports. “A good reaction second half, but first half until they scored it was back and forth. We didn’t cope with the setback well enough.

“We didn’t deal with their system well enough, we know they can play that way. They played that way last season and beat Chelsea 5-0.

“First goal there is nothing we can do, second is sloppy and the third we just didn’t recover.”

Solskjaer said the introduction of Nemanja Matic – who has played sparingly this season – at half-time helped United gain more control over the game.

“With Matic and his experience he had more presence. It was more about wanting the ball and believing, passing the ball. Someone needed to take responsibility,” the Norwegian said.

With United facing long odds to reach the final, Solskjaer urged his side to remember a famous comeback they pulled off last year when he was still the club’s interim manager.

Solskjaer’s men looked doomed against PSG in the Champions League last 16 after they lost the first leg 2-0 at Old Trafford. 

Facing long odds, United stunned the Ligue 1 champions at Parc des Princes in the second leg with a 3-1 victory, going through on away goals to the quarter-final where they eventually fell to Barcelona.

“We’ve shown before we have been down from a home tie and turned it around,” Solskjaer said.

“PSG is the latest example and we have to believe that we can put on a performance.”

Jesse Lingard appears to be “thinking about a move” away from Manchester United, admits Paul Ince, but the England international is considered to be “optimistic if he thinks Mino Raiola could secure him a switch to Real Madrid or Juventus”.

The 27-year-old midfielder has linked up with a so-called ‘super agent’ who already represents some of the finest talent on the planet, including Old Trafford team-mate Paul Pogba.

That agreement is considered to be a nod towards a future transfer for a player who has seen talk of a new contract with United mooted this season.

Lingard has struggled for end product in 2019-20, having gone 12 months without a Premier League goal or assist, but has offered encouragement with some of his recent displays.

It may be that any thoughts of fresh terms have been shelved at the Theatre of Dreams, with Ince of the opinion that a player who has also started to generate exit talk could have seen his head turned.

The former United star believes a move may be sought, but feels a divisive figure will need to rein in his ambition if he believes that Raiola can land him a switch to another European heavyweight.

Ince told Paddy Power: “Jesse Lingard teaming up with Raiola shows he wants to leave – but he needs to improve his performances before thinking about a move.

“If you don’t feel the club is going forward the way you like – fine – but there’s no need to play that out publicly. You can do it without anyone knowing. The thing is, if Pogba’s there next month, it’s going to be a huge task for him to win the fans over now.

“Then you see that Jesse Lingard has signed with that agent, too. I mean, he must be feeling optimistic if he thinks that Raiola could secure him a move to Real Madrid or Juventus!

“He’s a massive so-called super agent. I’m not sure why Jesse has signed with him to be honest.

“Obviously by getting involved with him he must think that he can secure a move in the next year or so, and he’s the man to do it. But Jesse’s not a kid anymore, and ultimately, he needs to improve his performances on the pitch before he can worry about his next move.

“He’s supposed to be in his prime, but some of his performances are terrible. There’s too much competition for him to be playing every week.

“He clearly thinks that Raiola is the man to secure him the move away from Old Trafford.”

Lingard has taken in 26 appearances for United across all competitions this season, but has mustered only one goal in the Europa League and lost his place in the England squad.

Jean Dujardin et Nathalie Péchalat se sont rendus ensemble à la première du nouveau film de Claude Lelouch, Chacun sa vie, à Paris. L’occasion de graver sur pellicule de belles photos de ce couple d’habitude très discret.

Partager la vie de l’acteur Jean Dujardin n’est pas toujours de tout repos pour Nathalie Péchalat, mais parfois, le jeu en vaut la chandelle. La preuve ce lundi 13 mars, à Paris, pour la Première du dernier film de Claude Lelouch, Chacun sa vie, dans lequel Jean Dujardin a l’un des rôles principaux.

Pour son nouveau long-métrage, le cinéaste s’est offert un casting de rêve, à croire que tout le cinéma français souhaitait participer au retour de Claude Lelouch sur grand écran. A l’affiche, Jean Dujardin, Christophe Lambert, Gérard Darmon, Liane Foly, Julie Ferrier, Jean-Marie Bigard ou encore Stéphane de Groodtet Johnny Hallyday. Même l’avocat Éric Dupond-Moretti participe à ce film chorale, qui s’annonce comme l’évènement cinéma de cette fin d’hiver.

Pour cette avant-première, au cinéma UGC Normandie de Paris, toute l’équipe ou presque s’était pressée sur le tapis rouge. Jean Dujardin est donc venu accompagné de sa compagne, la mère de sa petite Jeanne, et il a joué le jeu des photographes, une fois n’est pas de coutume.

Après un passage sur le tapis rouge, et une séance VIP, on a pu retrouver le beau couple dans une soirée dans la boîte de nuit l’Arc. Champagne et discussions entre acteurs au programme. Seul absence remarquée, celle de notre Johnny Hallyday national, dont les traitements pour venir à bout de son cancer l’obligent à rester à Los Angeles.

Johnny Hallyday se bat contre le cancer qui a été dépisté dans ses poumons fin 2016. Une lutte au cours de laquelle s’enchaînent victoires et défaites : le magazine VSD a retracé l’évolution du cancer du chanteur, dévoilant que les métastases avaient atteint d’autres organes que les poumons.

Le cancer de Johnny Hallyday inquiète ses fans. Si le chanteur se veut le plus rassurant possible, il est difficile de ne pas craindre pour sa santé, lui qui a déjà échappé à la mort plusieurs fois. Entouré de sa famille et de ses proches, il fait tout pour lutter le plus efficacement possible contre la maladie – à Los Angeles, où les médecins en qui il a confiance le soignent, le rockeur combat les cellules cancéreuses à coups de chimiothérapies. La première a commencé juste après le jour de l’an, selon les informations du magazine VSD. Si les résultats se sont montrés d’abord satisfaisants, ça n’a plus été le cas deux mois plus tard : le cancer s’est alors déplacé hors des poumons.

« Les résultats des troisième et quatrième chimios ne sont pas satisfaisants, peut-on lire dans VSD. des métastases sont détectées dans le foie et l’estomac. » Une évolution inquiétante qui a poussé Johnny Hallyday à continuer son traitement dans l’enceinte de l’hôpital, quand il se contentait auparavant de recevoir ses injections chez lui, à Los Angeles. Débute alors une seconde vague de soins.

Depuis, la chimiothérapie semble mieux fonctionner. « Les résultats du début du deuxième protocole ont été jugés satisfaisants, écrit VSD, suffisamment pour que la suite s’annonce encourageante. » Et pour ne pas avoir à annuler la tournée des Vieilles Canailles, qui devrait bien avoir lieu entre juin et juillet 2017. D’ici là, Johnny Hallyday devrait être définitivement remis sur pieds.

Invité hier soir de Salut les Terriens, l’animateur et producteur a vu l’humoriste Tom Villa évoquer son rôle dans un film tourné en 1997 qui, c’est peu de le dire, n’a pas marqué l’histoire du cinéma.

Nagui invité dans Salut les Terriens, une aubaine pour Tom Villa. Car les deux hommes se connaissent bien, et plus encore depuis que l’humoriste de 27 ans a intégré, en septembre dernier, l’équipe de La bande originale, émission qu’orchestre chaque midi Nagui sur France Inter.

C’est donc l’œil moqueur et le sourire en coin que le jeune homme s’est retrouvé, hier soir, face à ses deux patrons. Aussi, au moment de retracer brièvement la carrière de l’animateur phare du service public, Tom Villa l’a affirmé face caméra, « Nagui n’a même pas de dossier » prompt à pimenter sa chronique.

Dans ce film où il donne la réplique à Cristiana Réali et Michel Boujenah, l’animateur alors âgé de 36 ans incarne Zak apprenant que, selon une malédiction familiale, il sera frappé d’impuissance s’il n’enfante pas une femme dans les 30 jours qui arrivent. Ulcéré d’être boudé par TF1 à l’occasion du grand débat présidentiel de ce lundi 20 mars, Nicolas Dupont-Aignan, président du parti Debout la France, a accepté l’invitation de Cyril Hanouna. De passage sur le plateau de TPMP, l’homme politique n’a pas laissé les twittos insensibles.

21h00! Le top départ est donné. Sur le plateau de TF1, les cinq candidats en tête de la course à l’Elysée débutent un débat marathon de deux heures et demi. Parmi eux, certains ont immédiatement une pensée pour ces candidats oubliés par TF1. Des candidats à l’élection, restés chez eux en cette soirée du 20 mars et invités à débattre à une date ultérieure. Pourtant, parmi ces oubliés, tous ne sont pas restés à la maison. Nicolas Dupont-Aignan, vexé d’être boycotté, n’a pas tout de suite voulu tirer un trait sur son temps d’antenne. Après avoir quitté le 20 heures de TF1 samedi dernier en direct, le président de Debout la France a répondu présent, aujourd’hui, à l’invitation de Cyril Hanouna à participer à l’émission Touche pas à mon poste! (TPMP).

Durant un quart d’heure, le candidat Dupont-Aignan a pu expliquer le choix de son départ du 20 heures de TF1 face à Cyril Hanouna et à ses chroniqueurs. La seule règle? Ne pas parler politique. Si quelques twittos ont malgré tout été convaincus par l’homme, au point de s’intéresser au contenu de son programme, la grande majorité moque joyeusement le passage d’un prétendant à l’Elysée sur le plateau de TPMP. L’une des internautes doute par exemple de l’utilité d’une telle démarche et se demande si « Nicolas Dupont-Aignan sait que la plupart des téléspectateurs de @TPMP n’ont pas le droit de vote? », faisant allusion à l’âge moyen des fans de l’émission, généralement trop jeunes pour posséder une carte d’électeur. Un autre fait référence à une récente remarque de François Fillon et tweet: « Qui imagine le Général de Gaulle dans #TPMP ? ». Sans oublier ce twittos qui, après le passage sur TPMP, imagine les prochaines destinations de Nicolas Dupont-Aignan: « Automoto, le Jour du Seigneur, le Téléshopping et Les Anges #PlanMédia »…
