Mikel Arteta ‘delighted’ with ‘terrific’ Arsenal leader

Mikel Arteta wants David Luiz to be a leader to his Arsenal squad after being impressed by the defender’s attitude.

Luiz moved across London as he joined the Gunners from Chelsea in the summer but had struggled to improve a porous backline in the opening months of the campaign.

The Brazil international has impressed since Arteta’s appointment last month and put in a man of the match display in the 2-0 victory over Manchester United on New Year’s Day.

Luiz, 32, won six major honours during two spells at Stamford Bridge and is the only member of the squad Arteta inherited from Unai Emery who has lifted the Premier League trophy.

Emery had previously held an oft-criticised blind vote among his players to nominate a captain and leadership group but – given he had only just crossed the capital divide – Luiz did not make the cut.

Arteta, however, was unequivocal when asked if he wanted Luiz to be a leader in the Arsenal dressing room: “Yes, that’s what I wanted to demand of him.

“He is a player that has won more trophies than anybody else in that dressing room. We have to use that in a very powerful way.

“I wanted him to step up, I wanted him to put all his qualities – his personality and his experience – towards the team and he made a big step forward. I am very very pleased with him.

“In the games he has played under me so far he has been terrific. His attitude in training, the way he communicates with his team-mates, his desire to still learn, it’s superb. I am delighted with him.”

Two City fans banned for life after racist Sterling comments

Two Manchester City supporters have received five-year football banning orders from the courts and lifetime bans from the Premier League title holders after they admitted using racist language.

Ian Baldry, 58, from Bradford, West Yorkshire, made a racist comment towards City winger Raheem Sterling as he celebrated scoring a goal in a Premier League home game against Bournemouth in December 2018.

His friend, James McConnell, 57, of Newdale Road, Manchester, was heard making racist remarks about two match stewards at the same game at the Etihad Stadium.

Witnesses described McConnell as being drunk and abusive throughout the first half and regularly using foul language to insult the players on the pitch, said Greater Manchester Police.

He went on to make a comment about the race of a Bournemouth player, reportedly defender Tyrone Mings.

A fellow fan confronted McConnell about his behaviour and later reported him to stewards.

McConnell was also spotted shouting similar comments at a City player who took a corner at a home game against Newcastle two months earlier, said police.

On Friday, both men were sentenced at Manchester Magistrates’ Court after they pleaded guilty to causing racially aggravated intentional harassment, alarm or distress.

Baldry, of Bradley Street, was also ordered to perform 200 hours of community service, while McConnell was told to complete 250 hours of unpaid work in the community.

Following sentencing, Detective Constable Chris Preston said: “There are few words that can be used to describe the behaviour of McConnell and Baldry during this incident but their actions were absolutely disgusting.

“For them to brazenly and loudly use racist language in front of numerous other spectators as though it was completely normal is astonishing.

“The fact that they were quite happy to also racially abuse players from the team they claim to support just goes to show the close mindedness of these individuals, and I want to pay tribute to those fans who identified what was happening and raised the issue with a nearby steward.

“Racism at football matches simply will not be tolerated by Greater Manchester Police and we are prepared to take positive action against anyone seeking to take part in this kind of behaviour.”

In a statement, Manchester City said: “Following the sentencing of Ian Baldry and James McConnell at Manchester Magistrates’ Court and in line with Manchester City’s zero tolerance approach to discrimination, lifetime bans have been issued by the club.

“The club would like to thank Manchester City supporters for reporting both incidents and their cooperation throughout the investigations.”

Smith not confident of signing striker before Villa play City

Boss Dean Smith admitted Aston Villa are unlikely to sign a striker before the visit of Manchester City.

They host the Premier League champions on Sunday without a fit senior forward and sit just one point above the relegation zone.

Jonathan Kodjia is likely to miss out through illness with Keinan Davis (hamstring) also sidelined.

Villa are looking for a forward after Wesley’s season-ending knee injury on New Year’s Day but, having been interested in Chelsea’s Olivier Giroud and Michy Batshuayi, they remain frustrated.

Smith said: “We’re working on it all the time, do I think we’ll have it before Sunday? No.

“We’re working around the clock to bring players in but it’s a narrow window and a lot of clubs don’t want their better players to be leaving.

“When you are after players, four things need to align, the selling clubs want to sell, the buying club wants to buy and have the funds and then the player and his agents.

“There are four boxes and we’re not any closer to doing that at the moment.”

Villa are also searching for a goalkeeper with Tom Heaton out for the season with a knee injury and have been linked with former Liverpool star Pepe Reina, currently at AC Milan.

But Smith backed stand-in Orjan Nyland, who played in Wednesday’s 1-1 Carabao Cup semi-final first leg draw at Leicester.

He said: “I’m confident in his ability, when I first came he was number one and playing well. He saved a penalty at Swansea and then snapped his Achilles so was out for six months.

“In that time we brought in other goalkeepers. We recalled Jed Steer (from Charlton) who helped us get promoted and unfortunately he has done his Achilles and Tom Heaton, who got injured against Burnley.

“He has worked very hard to get to the levels we expect and he can play at this level.”

Danny Drinkwater is expected to be in the squad after his loan move from Chelsea.

The midfielder has made just two appearances this season while on loan at Burnley.

Smith added: “He’s a talented player, holds a medal for a Premier League champion but his career has stalled with his move to Chelsea not going as he would have liked.

“He’s a winner, we spoke a lot in the dressing room about what it took to get promoted last season.

“It takes that winner’s mentality and player with the experience he has got can only help the dressing room.”

Mourinho insists Spurs won’t panic: ‘Let the market think about us’

Tottenham head coach Jose Mourinho says the club will not panic buy in January, despite serious injuries to Harry Kane and Moussa Sissoko.

Striker Kane has been ruled out until April as he goes under the knife on a hamstring injury while midfielder Sissoko is set for a similar lay-off following knee surgery, leaving them short of quality ahead of a daunting Premier League game with Liverpool on Saturday.

Spurs have been linked with a host of strikers, and are understood to be interested in AC Milan’s Krzysztof Piatek, but Mourinho has warned they will only purchase in the current window if the right deal presents itself.

He said: “You know, it’s not me, I think even the coaches without injuries, even the coaches without problems in the squad, even the coaches with the best squads, even let’s say Jurgen (Klopp), even Jurgen with the best team, with amazing players, with amazing squads, he was happy to do a new player.

“So we are all the same, but the reality is that when I came here two months ago I knew the situation.

“I didn’t know of course that I was going to lose Harry and Moussa for so long, but I knew that the situation was about to try to get the best out of the players that we have, and that doesn’t change.

“So I’m focused on the work, I’m focused on the game tomorrow.

“If the boss arrives with a solution that can help us to face these difficult months that we are going to have ahead of us then so be it, then welcome.

“But if we don’t find the right solution, the right opportunity, then we are going to wait for the next summer to try to make the right decisions for the evolution of the team.

“So let’s wait, calm, but in this moment my focus is total on the players that we have available. That’s the way it is.”

Mourinho, who is used to doing his dealings in the summer transfer window, does not have a list of targets and says the club are likely to react if an opportunity comes their way.

“This isn’t about a list of players. January is a strange market, it’s not an easy market to be in,” he added.

“It’s a market of opportunity, a market where an opportunity arise and you have the conditions to do it or not to do it. We have to be calm and not think about the market – let the market think about us.”

Hudson-Odoi reveals Ronaldo as his favourite player & Ronaldinho his idol

The winger has expressed his admiration towards two Ballon d’Or winning superstars he looked up to while rising through the Chelsea ranks

Chelsea teenager Callum Hudson-Odoi has described Cristiano Ronaldo as a “great role model” while also naming Ronaldinho as his “favourite past star”.

Hudson-Odoi has established himself as one of the most exciting young players in European football over the past couple of years, after graduating from the Blues academy in 2017.

Italian tactician Maurizio Sarri gradually introduced the 19-year-old into the first-team fold in 2018-19, but his progress was cut short by an Achilles injury suffered in April.

The England international did not return to action at the end of September, and it has taken time for him to rediscover his best form amid strong competition for places at Stamford Bridge.

However, Hudson-Odoi put in a man of the match display and found the net in a 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest in a third-round FA Cup tie last weekend, which served as a stark reminder of his unique talents.

With Frank Lampard now at the helm, the mercurial winger has already featured in three more Premier League matches than he did in the whole of last season, and he is happy with how his career is progressing in west London.

Hudson-Odoi has admitted to looking up to Juventus superstar Ronaldo as a shining example of a consummate professional, which he is also striving to be as he matures and develops his all-round game.

When asked to name his favourite current sports star, the Chelsea ace told the club’s official app: “Cristiano Ronaldo. I say that because of the way he handles himself.

“All the way through his career he has been professional and worked his way through to where he is to this day. He is a great role model for loads of people so I would say, Cristiano Ronaldo.”

Hudson-Odoi went on to describe Barcelona legend Ronaldinho as his “idol” when quizzed on who he considers as his favourite sports star of all time.

“I would say Ronaldinho, just because of the way he played,” he said. “He had loads of positivity and always had a smile on his face.

“He always was encouraging and being positive in everything he does. So for me, Ronaldinho is an idol and my favourite past star.”

Chelsea will be back in Premier League action on Saturday, with Hudson-Odoi in contention for a starting spot once again in a home clash against Burnley.

Lampard’s side are six points clear of fifth-placed Manchester United in the final Champions League spot after 21 fixtures, with a trip to Newcastle on January 18 set to follow their latest outing.

Liverpool have all the ingredients to match Arsenal's Invincibles – Keown

The Reds have dropped just two points out of 60 so far in the Premier League and are on course to replicate the Gunners’ feat of 2003-04

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown believes that Liverpool could emulate the famous ‘Invincibles’ and go through the 2019-20 season unbeaten.

The Gunners made Premier League history in the 2003-04 campaign by avoiding defeat from start to finish as they eased to the title.

Arsene Wenger’s men won 26 of their 38 games and drew 12 to finish 11 points clear of Chelsea, and became in the process the first top-flight team in England to negotiate the entire season without a loss since Preston North End in the very first edition of the league in 1888-89.

No team has since managed to imitate that memorable campaign, but with 19 wins and a draw in 20 outings Liverpool are on track to smash all previous Premier League records as they waltz to what would be their first league crown in 30 years.

And Keown sees plenty of parallels between his old team and Jurgen Klopp’s hopefuls in their quest for perfection.

“During Arsenal’s 2003-04 Invincibles season, I saw opponents line up alongside Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp and Co in the tunnel. They’d ask them if they could swap shirts after the game, before we were even on the pitch!” Keown wrote in the Daily Mail.

“We were that formidable. Whenever I saw that, I knew we would win. There are certain ingredients you need to go unbeaten for so long, and fear from the opposition is one.

“We had that at Arsenal back then, and Liverpool have that now. Jurgen Klopp’s team have built a reputation for themselves.

“They have gone toe-to-toe with a magnificent Manchester City side. They are the champions of Europe, the Premier League champions-elect. That grows in the minds of opponents.

“Liverpool’s players may be striving for perfection but they can always improve. It’s about energy and desire.

“The manager has to create an environment where everybody wants to do better. Arsene Wenger did that with us, so has Klopp. The German has got Liverpool playing good football, too.

“It won’t be easy. But as someone who was part of an Invincibles group 16 years ago, do I think Liverpool will stay unbeaten this season? Yes I do. They have all the right ingredients.”

Liverpool’s next Premier League test comes against Arsenal’s arch-rivals Tottenham, who will hope to end the Reds’ unbeaten record in north London on Saturday.
