‘It’s been hard’ – Lloris opens up on Poch exit at Spurs

Hugo Lloris admits Mauricio Pochettino’s exit from Tottenham hit him hard but he’s fully behind new boss Jose Mourinho.

The France international made 229 appearances under Pochettino at Tottenham over a five-year period.

Pochettino was sacked earlier this season amid a poor run of form and was replaced by former Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho.

“It’s been hard,” Lloris told L’Equipe (via Sport Witness).

“It’s not nice to see people you really like leaving, and with whom you’re connected.

“But we also know that that’s part of football and you don’t have a say as a player, you have to put yourself immediately at the service of the new coach.

“After five and a half years together, we understood each other with our eyes closed. Now you have to get to know each other. But with top-level people, it happens quickly.”

Spurs have lost three of their last five matches in the Premier League under Mourinho with their latest defeat coming to league leaders Liverpool.

Kompany gives advice to City players chasing Liverpool

Vincent Kompany insists Pep Guardiola is the right man to bring further success to Manchester City – despite seeing his former club fall behind Liverpool in the Premier League title race.

The former City captain was honoured at the Football Writers’ Association tribute night at the Savoy on Sunday evening.

Kompany, 33, won four titles at the Etihad Stadium before leaving to become player-manager of Anderlecht last summer.

In his absence, City have dropped off the pace and are currently sat 14 points adrift of runaway leaders Liverpool.

But Kompany feels Guardiola is a key figure at City and should not be dismissed after one season where they have fallen behind Jurgen Klopp’s impressive Reds.

“They have Pep and no matter what, Pep is the right guy,” he told Sky Sports News.

“You never say over with City. But it isn’t in the hands of City but that is unfortunate but there is so much to look forward to.

“When you look how they have been performing in cups and the Champions League is still a massive target for the club, there is no reason to be disappointed about the season at this stage.”

Asked what advice he would offer to the current City side, Kompany added: “Stay calm.

“It is an experienced team and they don’t have to prove anything to anyone.

“They have done it, they know what it takes. It isn’t about one season, it is about an era, a period of time.”

Asked if he could return to City one day, Kompany replied: “It is as far off my mind as you can imagine.”

Writing in the event programme for Kompany’s FWA tribute, Guardiola praised his former captain.

“It goes without saying that we miss him around the training ground,” he wrote.

“But his position in City’s history is as secure as that of any player from the past 125 years of the club’s existence.

“To have had the opportunity to have coached him and conversed with him on many subjects was an honour.

“I wish Vincent nothing but the best for the future.”

Kompany also took time to sing the praises of former City team-mate Sergio Aguero, who hit a hat-trick in a 6-1 win at Aston Villa just hours before the Belgian was honoured in central London.

The goals were enough to see Aguero become the all-time leading foreign goalscorer in the Premier League and Kompany hailed the achievements of the Argentina international – especially his title-winning goal on the last day of the 2011/12 season.

“What a legend he is,” added Kompany.

“You take away the fact he has scored that many goals, I’m grateful for one goal.

“But when he scored against QPR and everyone said ‘Agueroooo’, you take that goal in isolation and he is always going to be a legend to me.

“He has been part of a very important core of players and no matter what happens, he will always be remembered as one guy who helped us get to the next level, such a level.”

Robertson reveals what Liverpool players do without….

Andrew Robertson says Liverpool’s charge towards Premier League invincibility is fuelled by the sacrifices they make off the pitch.

The Reds are 14 points clear at the top of the table after Roberto Firmino’s first half-strike secured a 1-0 win at Tottenham (16 Conclusions here), extending their unbeaten record to 38 league games.

In amassing an astonishing 61 points from a possible 63 over the first 21 matches of the campaign, Liverpool have now made the best ever start to a season in any of Europe’s top five leagues.

Their ability to outlast and swarm opposition teams has been a key factor in their success and Robertson believes it is no fluke.

“All the lads in there are no different,” he said. “As footballers you invest everything, you invest your life into football.

“It’s a short career and nobody likes being in the treatment room, not being fit to play the game.

“For me, I put everything into it to ensure I can play the game or be available. That’s what I’ve always done.

“Lifestyle, I always eat well and watch what I eat. I don’t drink during the season but don’t get me wrong, off season, I have a couple of weeks. I am Scottish after all.

“During the season I try not to and that’s important because you need to invest in your body.

“It’s the most important thing. The team behind the team at Melwood (Liverpool’s training ground) every day, they make sure our bodies are ready and we’re as fit as we can possibly be.”

On whether his team-mates also avoid alcohol, he replied: “I couldn’t tell you. I’m not round their houses, but I imagine so.

“The higher it goes, the tougher it gets because of the amount of games you’ve got.

“We all try to invest everything in it and that’s why you see during those tough, busy times over Christmas we do look fresh, because recovery is spot on.”

Barring an unprecedented collapse, the champagne will be flowing in May as Liverpool head towards a first league title since 1990.

They are also well on course to match Arsenal’s 2003-04 achievement of going through the season unbeaten, but Robertson reckons that puts a target on their backs.

“We’ll let you say that. We won’t say that because look at the run both us and Man City went on last season,” Robertson said when asked whether there was a way his side could not win the league.

“What’s to stop Man City doing that again? Being unbeaten in every single game. This league is so hard.

“Maybe sometimes we’ve made it look easy, but believe me it’s not – it’s so hard to perform against every team that wants to beat you.

“The longer the run goes on, the more everyone wants to beat you – ‘we beat Liverpool’ or whatever.

“We don’t take anything for granted. We are not celebrating in there that we are champions.

“We are just celebrating a nice win just now. Long may that continue and then in May maybe we can start to celebrate.”

Jurgen Klopp’s side are destined to be in the history books for their incredible achievements, but Robertson insists that is not a driving force.

“For us, they are irrelevant. Yes, if we break records on the way, fine, great, but we will look at that (only) if we get a trophy,” he said.

“Because last season we broke records in terms of clean sheets and ended up empty-handed in the Premier League.

“Records don’t mean anything unless they get you the end goal, hopefully this season it will.”

Gossip: Arsenal, Man Utd and Chelsea eye Prem defenders; Fernandes deal

CHELSEA TO SWOOP FOR SEAGULL?
Having received a transfer ban reprieve, Chelsea were expected to be the biggest spenders this month. But as we approach the halfway point in the window, the Blues are yet to make any moves.

Chelsea have mainly been linked with attacking players but Monday morning brings reports of interest in a Premier League centre-back. The Times says they have asked Brighton about the availability of Lewis Dunk and the Seagulls are open to a deal. But only on their terms…

Dunk has been in fine form again this season but Brighton would not stand in his way of a big move should their £50million valuation be met. Nathan Ake remains an option too, with the Blues retaining a buy-back option on the Bournemouth centre-back but that is set to expire at the end of the month.

ARSENAL FACE BOATENG BATTLE
Arsenal are even more desperate for centre-backs. They have been linked with Jerome Boateng and Mikel Arteta remains interested in a £12.5million deal for the Bayern Munich defender. But they’ve got competition.

Sky Sports claims AC Milan are sniffing around the 31-year-old, while the Rossoneri are also keen to bring in Sevilla’s Simon Kjaer.

NEXT KAB ON THE RANK FOR ARSENAL AND UNITED
The Gunners are also named as one of the clubs eyeing up a Watford defender…

According to Le10 Sport, Christian Kabasele is attracting attention from Arsenal, Manchester United, Newcastle and West Ham this month.

The 28-year-old capped twice by Belgium is said to be close to agreeing a new contract with the Hornets and it may well be that his agents are trying to nudge a deal over the line by bringing the likes of Arsenal and United into it.

FERNANDES LATEST
The weekend saw Manchester United’s interest in Bruno Fernandes ratcheted up several notches and it was reported that a £65million offer would be incoming after Sporting Lisbon rejected Ed Woodward’s lowball opener and another bid involving two players in part-exchange.

Another report this morning suggests United have boxed off the player’s side of the deal. Fernandes is said to have agreed a five-year contract worth around £100,000 a week. Now all that remains is for Woodward to satisfy Sporting.

AND THE REST
Christian Eriksen has agreed a four-and-a-half year deal with Inter Milan… Barcelona have made contact with Mauricio Pochettino about taking over from Ernesto Valverde… Shkodran Mustafi’s agent will hold talks with Galatasaray… Crystal Palace and Lazio have joined Inter in the race to sign Ashley Young from Manchester United… Leicester will allow George Thomas to join ADO Den Haag on loan… Tromso teenager Bryan Fiabema is set to be Chelsea’s first signing of the window… Aston Villa and Norwich are battling Bristol City to take Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah on loan…. Newcastle are looking at Strasbourg midfielder Ibrihima Sissoko, Spartak’s Alex Kral and Thiago Maia of Lille.

'That's what this club is like' – Zidane reflects on winning ninth trophy from ninth final at Real Madrid

The manager discussed his latest trophy after overcoming rivals Atletico Madrid

Zinedine Zidane said winning nine trophies in nine finals is what Real Madrid are about after the Spanish giants reigned supreme in the Supercopa de Espana decider.

After a scoreless 90 minutes and extra time, Madrid overcame city rivals Atletico Madrid 4-1 in a penalty shoot-out in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Sunday.

Madrid captain Sergio Ramos tucked home the winning penalty as Zidane preserved his perfect record in finals as head coach of the LaLiga powerhouse with nine from nine.

“In the end, we’re all together and we prepared the matches well,” said Zidane, who has won LaLiga, three Champions Leagues, two UEFA Super Cups and as many FIFA Club World Cup and Supercopa titles across two stints in Madrid.

“I don’t know why we’ve won nine out of nine. It’s because that’s what this club is like. It hasn’t been easy, we’ve been patient, calm.

“At half-time, we didn’t know how to get closer to goal, but we had patience. We believed until the end, like always.

“Winning a trophy is never easy and even less so against Atletico. Both teams had chances.

“We’re still in lots of competitions. We have to be happy, but there’s still lots to come. We have to keep working.

“We’ll rest a bit and play again, as we can’t think about dropping [our level].

“Now, we’re going to enjoy ourselves, but there’s still a long way to go in LaLiga Santander, the Champions League and the Copa del Rey.”

The final went to penalties after Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde was sent off for hacking down Alvaro Morata and denying a goalscoring opportunity.

The match-saving tactical foul thwarted Atletico and eventually ensured Madrid triumphed as Valverde was named man of the match.

“He was given man of the match and I’m happy for him because he did a great job,” Zidane said. “I’m sure that he wants to share it with his team-mates.

“He did what he had to do, he made a crude foul but he did it well. And in the end, the important thing is that he’s apologised to Alvaro.”

'One of the greatest players in Man City's history' – New deal for Fernandinho a no-brainer for Guardiola

The 34-year-old has just six months remaining on his contract but all parties want him to stay at the Etihad Stadium

Fernandinho was the last to leave the pitch at Old Trafford following Manchester City’s Carabao Cup destruction of neighbours United.

The captain led his players to the away end to join in the celebrations after the champions had taken a big step towards a third successive triumph with a 3-1 derby win.

As he walked off, Fernandinho turned to punch the air in response to the supporters loudly chanting his name to the tune of the Ottawan hit song ‘D.I.S.C.O.’.

While the City faithful were delighted by the attacking quality that pulled apart United’s defence, they were equally appreciative of the wily veteran, who cleverly shut down the speedy counter-attacking threat of Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood.

For half a season, the Brazilian has plugged the significant gap in the centre of defence left by the departure of influential skipper Vincent Kompany and a serious injury to Aymeric Laporte.

With John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi suffering their own minor fitness setbacks, along with dips in form, Fernandinho has emerged as City’s most reliable centre-back for the past four months.

Pep Guardiola trusts him implicitly. Deployed at the base of the midfield for the Catalan’s first three seasons at the club, Fernandinho quickly adjusted to the heavy demands of fulfilling such a role in a Guardiola team.

In the first season, when results were not going City’s way, Guardiola refused to take a more pragmatic defensive approach, such as adding an extra player in central midfield. Fernandinho nonetheless bought into the philosophy and the team reaped the rewards in the next two record-breaking campaigns.

Now, with the arrival of club-record signing Rodri to offer cover and support in front of the back four, Guardiola has trusted Fernandinho to move back into the centre of defence.

It hasn’t always gone well and the City boss has experimented to try to find that solid base for his attacking game. Even if stationed in a back-three or on the less comfortable left-hand side of a centre-back pairing, Fernandinho has embraced the challenge wholeheartedly.

With six months remaining on Fernandinho’s current contract, Guardiola is in no doubt that one of his most trusted lieutenants deserves a new deal.

“He didn’t have to convince me,” the City boss insisted. “He convinced me on day one of the three years together.

“He knows the opinion we have about what he’s done at the club. He’s one of the greatest players this club has had in its whole history.”

Fernandinho is on course to meet the obligations to automatically trigger a contract renewal, but those goals are largely irrelevant. City want to reward him with an extension anyway – and Fernandinho wants to remain.

The Premier League champions have already opened talks with the player and his representatives and a new deal is likely to be announced in the next few weeks.

Fernandinho turns 35 in May but despite being able to talk to any club across Europe, he is happy in Manchester.

Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain were among the clubs showing an interest in a free transfer, but he is settled in Manchester and his family’s happiness was a key consideration for a man who left his hometown of Londrina with barely a word of English.

Family has always been a major factor in his life since developing a love for the game from his father and taking his baby sister with him to football training as a teenager.

He’s also something of a father figure to the young Brazilians at the club, helping Gabriel Jesus, Ederson and previously Danilo and Fernando settle in the city.

His team-mates have no doubts about his quality. “Dinho can play everywhere. Since I came here, he’s been really underrated,” Kevin De Bruyne said after the win at United.

“For me, he was one of the best defensive midfielders in the world and now he just comes in as a central defender and does what he does.

“Props to him, because obviously he is 34 and it’s not easy to play a new position, especially when you’ve never done it in the 14 years before that. He has done brilliantly.”

Fernandinho, meanwhile, believes the position has turned him into a better player.

“In defence, I see the game in a different way,” he explained. “It has been very cool and the guidance I have received from Pep has been very good.

“At 34, playing in the Premier League is a source of pride. Many, many players wanted to be experiencing what I am experiencing.”

This season’s Premier League challenge may be effectively over and the Champions League will become the focus for City when the competition restarts in February.

To have any chance at a resurgent Real Madrid in the last 16, Guardiola is certain to turn to the experience of senior players such as De Bruyne, David Silva and Fernandinho.

But if Europe is to remain a frustration again, Fernandinho will be back hungry as ever next year to land silverware.

“The desire to win trophies should be in the heart and in the mind,” he stated at Old Trafford, perfectly underlining just why everyone at City is so desperate for him to stay.

Divorce d’Angelina Jolie et Brad Pitt : Courteney Cox prend la défense de Jennifer Aniston

Click:hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose HPMC

That's a wrap! We’d like to think we stuck this takeover. And President Obama gave his best shot to a split with us today, too. Thanks so much to the President, First Lady @MichelleObama, and @VP for having us. #FinalFive out!
