Solskjaer admits Man Utd will ‘definitely add to’ potent front three

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists the club are “gonna add to” their striking options, despite their “very exciting front three”.

United travel to Anfield to take on runaway Premier League leaders Liverpool on Sunday, who have their own very dangerous striking trio.

And Solskjaer admits United’s three of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood are a way off Liverpool’s lauded strikers, and insists the club will look to strengthen in that area.

“The front three they’ve got have been playing together for ages, seasons now, and you can see the rotation movements, understanding and we hope our front three will get that understanding.” Solskjaer said at his press conference.

“I think I’ve only started them together once in Premier League, so we’ve got a way to go to get the understanding but they scored four goals in that game.

“So I believe in ours, gonna add to them, definitely, but in years coming we’ll see lots of them. Liverpool have scored more goals than us outside the front three so not gonna say ours are better or theirs are better.

“We can see them three, got them on long contracts, and can see them three developing into a very exciting front three.

“I was here with Ronaldo, Tevez, Rooney that’s what we want as supporters and manager, express yourselves, put the fear to their defenders, but we’ve got Daniel James here as well so I am very excited for it.”

Why Man Utd’s deal for €70m Fernandes is ‘at risk’

Manchester United’s move for Bruno Fernandes is ‘at risk’ as they remain in talks with Sporting Lisbon over a fee for the midfielder.

The Portugal international is said to be desperate to move and has reportedly agreed terms with the Old Trafford club.

But according to journalist Rui Pedro Braz, United won’t go above paying £42m up front for Fernandes, while Sporting demand at least £55m for their captain.

The £13million disparity between the two clubs could scupper the Portugal international’s potential transfer.

Braz told Portuguese television channel TVI 24 that Sporting are insisting on a guaranteed fee of £55m plus bonuses – something United are not prepared to do.

Fernandes is due to play for Sporting against Benfica on Friday night and it is being reported he has asked to miss the match to try and push through a transfer to United.

Man Utd agree £1.3m fee with Inter for club veteran

Ashley Young is on the verge of joining Inter Milan after Manchester United agreed a 1.5 million euros (£1.3m) fee with the Serie A club.

The deal for the 34-year-old England international is subject to a medical, scheduled to take place in Milan on Friday, and the agreement of personal terms.

The United club captain was out of contract in the summer, but Inter boss Antonio Conte was keen to tie up the deal during this month’s transfer window.

Young has made 18 appearances for United this season, scoring once against AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League.

But the versatile defender has not featured since the FA Cup third-round tie at Wolves on January 4, missing the last three games as his future became increasingly uncertain.

Stevenage-born Young, who has won 39 England caps, began his career at Watford and joined United from Aston Villa for £17million in June 2011.

He made 261 appearances for the Red Devils, scoring 19 goals.

Young won a Premier League winner’s medal in 2012-13, in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season as United manager.

He also picked up winner’s medals in the FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League.

Inter, who signed Romelu Lukaku from United last August and also have Alexis Sanchez on loan from the Red Devils, are second in Serie A, two points adrift of Juventus.

Spurs star Harry Kane set to miss Euros claims surgeon

England captain Harry Kane is unlikely to be fit for Euro 2020, a leading orthopaedic surgeon has said.

Kane went under the knife on Saturday to repair a ruptured tendon in his left hamstring and the club have said they expect him to resume training in April.

However, his participation at this summer’s tournament was plunged into doubt earlier this week when Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho raised the possibility of Kane not being fit until next season.

And now Chris Wilson, one of the country’s prominent doctors in the procedure, says he thinks it is more likely to be six months before Kane could play again.

“I would expect it to be six months before he could return to action,” Dr Wilson, who has performed the same operation 75 times, told the PA news agency.

“There is a big range of opinion because it is such an uncommon procedure and some surgeons may say quicker.

“If the repair was good and sound, the first six weeks he will be nursing the repair and doing very little.

“Six to 12 weeks, providing everything was OK, he will be doing basic strengthening exercises.

“At three months you would start a normal hamstring rehabilitation that you would do if you got a tear in the middle of the muscle.

“If I was talking to a top-level footballer I would want to manage their expectations and say I wouldn’t anticipate them being fit and playing normally in a game for six months following the surgery.

“If it was me I would say aim for getting fit for pre-season training. I am aware in Harry Kane’s case they have been saying April or May – I have to say I would be very surprised.”

Kane has a history of defying medical opinion to return quickly from a string of ankle ligament injuries.

Dr Wilson, who is the surgeon for Championship sides Cardiff and Swansea and has operated on Olympic athletes, has urged caution with Kane’s recovery, even if he is feeling good.

“There is a risk of recurrence,” he said. “When you do a hamstring repair, you’ll tell the athlete there is a risk of re-rupture.

“Coming back too early increases the risk of re-rupture. There is no getting around that.

“Most of the surgeons will say it will take at least three months before he is doing some normal running and training.

“He may defy expectations. If it was me, I would say forget playing before six months, no matter how good you feel.

“His surgeon may be a bit more relaxed about it and say, ‘Get to three months and see how he is’.”

With a summer tournament just five months away, where England play their three group games on home soil, Dr Wilson says Kane’s surgeon could come under pressure to give him the green light to recover.

“It’s not impossible (he could return sooner), maybe with a repair of the single tear,” he said.

“It is not really a set science. The surgeon will know how strong the repair is.

“The club’s staff may be pecking away at the surgeon. I have had this with footballers and rugby players, they may say, ‘Look he is fine, why are we holding him back?’.

“The trainers shorten the recovery, with the intensity of input they may get him back in three or four months, who knows, but personally I would be very surprised.”

Messi didn't need anything from me at Barcelona – Ronaldinho

The Brazilian is often said to have taken the young phenomenon under his wing at Camp Nou but stresses his influence was minimal

Ronaldinho believes Lionel Messi didn’t need anything from him while he was breaking through at Barcelona.

The 2002 World Cup winner arrived at Camp Nou in 2003 and was at the club when a teenage Messi began working his way into the Catalans’ first-team.

After claiming a delightful chipped assist for the Argentine’s first senior goal, Ronaldinho would go on to forge an effective pairing with Messi as the two bounced off one another in the final third.

While seemingly helping Messi settle at Barcelona, the Brazilian is adamant his influence wasn’t needed, with his team-mate always destined to shine.

“When I arrived at Barcelona, there was already talk of a kid [Messi] who stood out,” Ronaldinho told Panenka magazine, via Marca.

“Then we were friends; we started playing together and we got on very well. He arrived being different to all the others, and we spoke with [Frank] Rijkaard so that he came to train with us – it was all very fast.

“I was lucky enough to give him the pass for his first goal.

“Over time, it’s very nice to see someone who starts out so close [to you] and then conquers the world.

“We were always very close. We learned things, he taught me Spanish and I taught him Portuguese, but with the ball we understood each other perfectly.

“I’d be left amazed by how calm he is. That’s something I love about him; he never gets into trouble, he’s always with his family and those closest to him.

“Leo has everything, he didn’t need anything from me.”

Ronaldinho spent five seasons at Barcelona, winning two La Liga titles, and declared Rijkaard was the best manager he played for during his distinguished career.

“He’s a great coach, a very quiet guy, the best I’ve ever worked with,” Ronaldinho said of the Dutchman. “He knew everything because he played at the highest level, and that made things easy for us.

“Everything he asked us to do, he has already done it before, so he spoke to us in a very simple and direct way.

“He gave me a lot of freedom to play my football. When we didn’t have the ball, we also had to fulfil our obligations. But when we had it, he made me feel completely free.”

'Football is a strong catalyst for mental health change' – The making of One of a Number

The maker of Goal’s youth football documentary explains why he felt compelled to tackle one of the game’s biggest issues

Over the last two years, understanding of mental health problems in the UK has changed dramatically.

Historically, if you were struggling with personal issues, you were ostracised. However, through very honest and frank introspective accounts by people in the public eye, having the strength to come forward and admit to struggling with forms of anxiety and depression, the narrative has shifted to the point where society as a whole is beginning to understand that these are issues that can and do happen to everyone. The key is managing mental wellbeing as you would diet or exercise.

Football has been a strong catalyst for change in men’s mental health discussions. Traditionally, the notion of being a strong man meant being stoic and composed; displaying any sign of emotion was seen as a weakness.

But things have changed thanks to the incredibly brave and honest accounts of mental health issues by players like Danny Rose, Dean Windass and Marvin Sordell. In truth, to mention just a few names does a disservice to the vast number of people who have come forward to bear their soul.

These personal stories of struggle have been vitally important to the future of our mental health management, as it changes the idea of mental wellbeing in people’s minds, but it also breaks down the biggest illusion depression creates – the notion that you are alone.

It was that aspect of the issue which led me to making the documentary ‘One of a Number: Surviving football’s ruthless system’.

Since I joined Goal in November 2016, we have featured several pieces with players discussing their footballing journey and its impact on their personal lives: Sonny Pike, Pajtim Kasami, Ryan Smith, Kyle Ebecilio and many more.

Being in the room as producer/camera operator you have a slightly removed, almost bird’s eye view of the situation and there were patterns, common key words and phrases that resonated with experiences I’d had in my previous job.

Before I became a journalist, I spent most of my 20s working in schools, including two and a half years at a primary school, where I was a teaching assistant for Year 4 and 6 classes. As part of my role, I was on playground duty every day and, given my love of football, was always in charge of the five-a-side cage.

At the time, there were several talented young players at the school, including one pupil who was at an academy.

I had never seen a child his age that talented. But he struggled with managing his emotions and would sometimes lash out at his team-mates, basically because they weren’t as good as him and his competitiveness spilled over in an emotional response.

When this happened, I would often have no choice but to send him off, which resulted in a more extreme emotional reaction. He would then isolate himself, either somewhere in the playground or his classroom.

I spent a lot of time thinking about how to manage these situations, as I feel it would have been very easy to dismiss his actions simply as ‘bad behaviour’. But understanding that his reactions weren’t coming from spite or a desire to scald his classmates, it was his extreme desire to win, coupled with the fact that, as a seven-year-old, he was still developing social skills and didn’t understand why his team-mates didn’t pass to him, or missed a chance to score.

As a result, after any of these episodes, I would seek him out later in the day to talk about why I had sent him off, explain that he hadn’t been ‘bad’, discuss how to manage those feelings of frustration and to encourage his classmates rather than criticise.

This initiative was backed up by one of the contributors to the documentary, Robert Kempson, a specialist senior child psychologist based near Cardiff. Kempson encountered the world of academy football first-hand when his son Theo was scouted by Cardiff City but struggled with the emotional pressure of comparing himself to other talented children in his team.

“Children see the world and in a very black and white way,” Kempson explained. “If you’re being good, ‘I’m brilliant, I’m the best I am, I’m a good kid, I’m doing well.’ Then you get told off and it’s ‘Oh, I’m terrible.’

“There are very young kids who tend to bounce between extremes from good and bad. And what we’re trying to do over time is to try to fill in the gaps and be and be a bit more comfortable with the fact that we we’re not all good or bad.”

Of course, a talented footballer’s emotional wellbeing is no more important than that of his peers. It is simply that he is exposed to a unique set of circumstances that can have a direct impact on his mental state.

For me, the strongest correlation between my experiences on playground duty and those of the players who have spoken out about mental health, is that notion of isolation. For any player who joins the academy system, chances are they will have quickly been identified as better than the rest of the kids in their class at school.

In most cases, this has a knock-on effect on that child’s social standing. Also, as Balham FC coach Joshua Fitzgerald-Smith mentioned when I visited their Under-7s training session; “When I was younger, if you were a better player, you were more respected, whether it’s in the class or outside playing football. You always got more love or respect because you’re seen as someone good at sports or someone that was ‘the man’.”

There is a fundamental irony in the fact that a talent not specifically related to social interaction can have a bearing on how people treat you. If you’re identified as gifted from an early age, your social interactions can be shaped by something largely beyond your control.

Then, when you factor in the success and status that comes with talent, it is only natural for that person to base their self-perception and identity on their footballing skill.

However, as QPR consultant sport psychologist Misia Gervis explained to me, this can be dangerous if that status is taken away, by injury or eventual rejection by a club.

“It has to be about valuing the person first,” she said. “Football is just something you do. It isn’t who you are, because the problems come when you invest in your identity and you have one identity. And then that identity gets taken away from you because you’re released – that is when you walk yourself to the edge of the precipice and fall off.”

Setbacks in a player’s career will happen at all ages and continue until they eventually leave the game. How players and those present in their lives react to setbacks is key moving forward. Helping players to develop emotional resilience will better prepare them for the eventual inevitability that ‘the dream will end’.

There is no one solution or set formula for solving mental health issues in football, owing to the complexity of every individual’s personal experiences. The idea of sharing and talking is always mentioned as the basis for any answer and it can become a bit of a throwaway comment that perhaps loses its impact.

However, as I have found putting this documentary together, communication is vital. Not only does empathetic discussion shatter the notion that we are alone in dealing with the issues we face, it can also help us find the answers that we had inside us all along.

Sometimes, it just needs a friend or a colleague phrase their perspective in a certain way for all of the pieces in the puzzle to click into place.

Overall, I feel we have only begun to scratch the surface of a multi-faceted issue that needs in-depth introspective and personal discussion to become a key part of footballing culture if we are to improve our understanding of the pressures players face on a daily basis and how that impacts on their sense of identity and wellbeing.
