Mourinho has dig at Conte over Eriksen chase

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho feels that old foe Antonio Conte has stepped out of line by discussing Christian Eriksen.

Conte, currently in charge of Inter Milan, has talked about the possibility of signing the Spurs midfielder, whose contract expires in the summer, this month.

Reports in Italy suggest the 27-year-old’s agent is in Milan to broker a deal, but Mourinho confirmed on Friday that the Serie A side are yet to make a formal bid.

Conte, who on Friday secured the services of former England defender Ashley Young from Manchester United on a six-month contract, said in the Italian press: “Eriksen? We have to go to people who have already had a career, who are at the end of their contracts.”

Mourinho has a long history with Conte as they exchanged a number of barbed insults when the Italian was in charge of Chelsea and he has now reopened old wounds.

The Portuguese says managers with “responsibilities” should not talk about players that are not yet at their club.

“I think Antonio. I think Antonio. He has said publicly,” he said.

“I think we coaches, we should all behave in the same way in relation to transfers.

“I know that for you it is not the best way. But I think we should always be closed, until something really happens.

“So when you ask me about player A, B or C, like when I was asked about three players, how can I speak about three players that are not my players?

“I think we should always be protective. Nothing, nothing. When I see people with responsibilities, speaking about Eriksen….

“I think we shouldn’t speak about players from other clubs until they become our players I think we shouldn’t speak about players from other clubs.

“You ask me about Gedson (Fernandes) since the moment Gedson’s name was on the screen: goes to West Ham, goes to Tottenham.

“You ask me if he comes, if he doesn’t come, I told you nothing. I have nothing to say about it. I think that’s the best way.

“You protect everybody, you protect the clubs, you protect the player, you protect everything.”

Mourinho has conceded he feels sorry for Eriksen, now enduring his second transfer window in a row where he is in limbo.

He said: “I put myself in the player’s position and I think he needs the 31st of January to come and to be sure that he is going to stay until the end of the season, or before the 31st of January to know that he is leaving.

“I think it’s difficult for a player to be in this situation where, ‘Today I am here, tomorrow I don’t know that I am’.

“If he is here on the 31st of January, he will know that he will be here on the 1st of February, he will know that he will be committed with the club, with the fans, with everyone until the end of the season.”

It might feel odd for Mourinho to be going to battle with Inter, having been so successful with them in the 2009-10 season, winning the Champions League.

However, he insists nothing will diminish his love for the club.

“That’s not my Inter. My Inter was (former president Massimo) Moratti Inter,” Mourinho said. “This is not my Inter.

“I have no connections with the people so I think it’s nothing to do with that, nothing can change my feeling with Inter, it’s not a situation with a player that is going to change my feeling with the club and the fans. No chance.”

Rodgers warns Villa deal for forgotten Leicester striker is ‘complicated’

Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers has warned Aston Villa that a loan move for Foxes forward Islam Slimani is likely to be “too complicated”.

Villa are desperately chasing a new striker after Wesley was recently ruled out for the season with an ACL injury, while Keinan Davis is also on the sidelines, and Jonathan Kodjia is set to move to Qatari side Al Gharafa.

It is understood Villa will this weekend sort out the international clearance paperwork that will allow Tanzania international Mbwana Samatta to complete an £8.5million move from Belgian side Genk.

But Villa are also believed to be chasing Slimani, who in August joined Monaco on a season-long loan from Leicester.

City’s former record signing, who moved to the Foxes for £29million in August 2016 from Sporting Lisbon, has scored seven goals in 13 Ligue 1 appearances for Monaco.

However, a move to Villa means Monaco would have to consent to release the 31-year-old Algeria international, as well as Leicester sanctioning the deal.

“I think that looks like it’s probably going to be too complicated,” said Rodgers when asked about Slimani joining another club in this transfer window.

“There is interest in him, but he is there at Monaco and due to be there for the season.

“I’m not sure if anything will happen on that or not, but it will just make it a little bit complicated.”

Rodgers, meanwhile, has bemoaned the latest directive from the Professional Game Match Officials Limited.

Referees have now been instructed to consult pitchside monitors for red card decisions, as Michael Oliver did in an FA Cup third-round tie between Crystal Palace and Derby when he upgraded a yellow card for Palace’s Luka Milivojevic to a red.

Asked whether he wanted to see monitors used, Rodgers replied: “For me, my own personal opinion, no.

“I just think there can be too much influence for them and where the screen is situated. It’s not something I was overly keen on right from the off.

“It’s going to be experience isn’t it, but if the referees go over and it helps the flow of the game, helps everything, them to make the right decisions, then of course you would want it.

“I spoke to (Norwich manager) Daniel (Farke) at one of the meetings, and he mentioned in Germany it didn’t work so well, with that etiquette of the referee going over, and everything else.

“My own feeling, I wouldn’t be in favour of that, but let’s see how it goes.”

Rodgers has confirmed influential midfielder Wilfred Ndidi has returned to training just over a week after undergoing minor knee surgery.

Although Sunday’s Premier League clash at Burnley comes too soon, Rodgers added: “He has made great progress.

“He is out on the pitch working already, which is great news for us. He won’t be available for the weekend, but we will see after that.”

Referees ‘reminded’ to use pitchside monitors for red card decisions

Referees have been advised to use pitchside monitors to make a final ruling on red card decisions.

Officials were reminded at a recent meeting that they should go to the ‘referee review area’ when the video assistant referee suggests upgrading a yellow card to a red or downgrading a red to a yellow.

In most areas the guidance to Premier League referees is that the monitors should be used sparingly, and so far this season no official has gone to review a decision using one, instead relying on the VAR.

Referee Michael Oliver checked the monitor before issuing a red card to Crystal Palace’s Luka Milivojevic during an FA Cup third-round tie against Derby on January 5.

Palace boss Roy Hodgson was asked after that game whether he would like to see more referees follow Oliver’s lead and said: “No, not particularly.

“If it is going to be the referee’s decision on that field that counts why do you bother with the VAR people sitting there in Stockley Park?

“Make up your mind. You either want the people in Stockley Park to referee it or the referee to referee it.”

Arsene Wenger, the new head of global football development for world governing body FIFA, said last month it was “a worry” that the monitors were not being used regularly in the Premier League.

“The referees on the field are there because they have the experience and they are confident,” the former Arsenal boss said.

“Let’s not forget that it is video assistance for the referee, so (the VARs) are not the ones who should make the decision but the ones who help the referee to make the right decision.”

Mourinho explains what to expect from Fernandes’ Spurs debut

Spurs boss Jose Mourinho has confirmed that new signing Gedson Fernandes will make his debut at Watford this weekend.

The Portugal midfielder arrived on an 18-month loan from Benfica this week, with a view to a permanent transfer.

Speaking about the Portugal international ahead of the game, Mourinho said: “This weekend they can expect him to be involved, starting or not but for sure involved in the team.

“When you get players in January, normally it’s because you need. And we need. because we lost important players for long time so we need his contribution. Young player, yes, just arrived in a new country, yes, but at the same time has experienced of playing for a big club.

“Has played already big matches, for instance Bayern Munich and Galatasaray away in the Champions League. Europa League quarter-finals, so he’s used to a high level of stress, pressure, responsibility.

“He’s a kid that can play different positions in midfield, even wide on the right if we need. We got him for his multi-functionality. He’s what I used to call a special loan. He’s not a three month loan and goodbyes. One-and-a-half year loan when he’ll have time to develop, and who knows if he doesn’t stay here for a number of years.”

Hayley Ladd: Man Utd's Welsh midfielder pushing for a ticket to Tokyo with Team GB

Phil Neville’s squad is expected to be primarily English, but Ladd is one of many other British talents with a strong case to be included

Some of the names that will be in Phil Neville’s 18-player Team GB squad for this summer’s Olympics are pretty easy to predict.

Lucy Bronze, Steph Houghton, Jill Scott and Ellen White are among the star English names expected to go to Tokyo, but what about the other three nations that Neville can pick from?

The plane is expected to be filled mostly with England players, but there are a whole host of talents from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland pushing for a place.

Manchester United’s Hayley Ladd is one of those players.

The Wales international has been one of the most consistent performers in the Women’s Super League this season, operating brilliantly in the heart of the Red Devils midfield and more than playing her part in their tremendous start to life as a top-flight professional club.

The 26-year-old has been a regular in the WSL for many years now, but she’s really started to catch the eye since joining United in the summer.

“I have loved it. It has pushed me out of my comfort zone and it’s a place where I can learn and feel comfortable enough to be myself,” she said.

“I can’t wish for more really from the players and the staff.”

It’s been under Neville’s former assistant, Casey Stoney, that the 26-year-old has thrived and Ladd couldn’t speak much higher of the former Arsenal defender.

“She gives so much time and respect to each of the players,” she said.

“She really makes you feel like you’re treated so well which is a real privilege. She trusts us as players, wants us to get on the ball and gives us that space to make errors.

“I think straight away when someone has been a former player you have that immediate respect.

“I think with that insight, she knows exactly what we’re thinking and feeling after every training session and game.

“I think that means she’s really in touch with us lot and you really feel like you get that attention to detail. She looks after the details very well.

“We probably don’t see that a lot as players, but after certain wins when she’s changed tactics slightly, I’ve been kind of blown away really at that change that she’s done. No matter however small, it’s made a difference and it’s meant that we’ve won the game.

“I’m really enjoying my time working under her.

“I wouldn’t say [she’s a] perfectionist, but she will look at every little way in which we can win that game. I think if someone is that thorough, I think for us we’re just really lucky to have her.”

Under Stoney, Ladd has improved her game to go from a reliable WSL player to someone whose name is firmly in the frame for a place in that Team GB squad, too.

The midfielder, who can also play as a centre-back, puts that down to how much she is pushed under her new coach.

“I think she has high demands of everyone,” Ladd explains.

“While you feel – I don’t want to say comfortable – you feel well-respected, she’s going to push you and she’s going to make sure that you’re the best that you can possibly be.

“You never rest on your laurels. She’s always pushing you, whether it’s tactically, technically… We meet quite a lot as individuals with the staff and they’re always outlining ways in which we can give more to the team and be better individually.”

It’s a credit not only to Ladd herself but also Man Utd and the project they are building that their No.12 is in contention for a ticket to Tokyo.

Capped more than 50 times for Wales, her experience at international level would be a welcome addition to a squad preparing to head to the biggest sporting event in the world.

On the pitch, her versatility would be a huge boost for a squad much smaller than Neville is used to working with, too.

Ladd plays primarily as a midfielder for her club, mixing hard-working grit with an impressive range of passing to create a dynamic that Neville arguably doesn’t have in an England player.

But for her country, the former Bristol City captain has played regularly as a centre-back too, both in a back three and a back four.

“Yeah a little bit – I think more [as a] formality at this point,” she says modestly when asked if she has been in contact with the Team GB boss.

“It’s nice that the Welsh girls have been considered and have been treated as equals and stuff. It’s positive meetings so far.

“Every game we approach [with Man Utd], I just try to give my all for the team.

“Through that, if I get my name put forward for whatever and I’m doing well for Wales, then I am happy.”

Salah not competing with Mane at Liverpool & counters critics of supposed selfish streak

The Egyptian forward has been accused of focusing too much on his own game at times, but he boasts the numbers to paint a different picture

Mohamed Salah has reiterated that there is no competition between himself and Sadio Mane at Liverpool, with his numbers in the final third proving that he is not as selfish as some would like to make out.

The Egyptian forward has been a prolific presence throughout his time at Anfield.

Back-to-back Golden Boots have been secured in the Premier League, with club colleague Mane claiming a share of that prize in 2018-19.

It has been suggested that Salah can be a little too self-centred at times, with the 27-year-old focused solely on his own end product when others are better placed to aid the collective cause.

Mane took to airing his frustration towards a Reds team-mate during a trip to Burnley early in the current campaign, leading to talk of a potential rift in the Liverpool camp.

Salah has once again sought to rubbish those rumours, with there no personal duels to be found on Merseyside.

Quizzed by Sky Sports on whether there is competition with Mane to get the most goals, Salah joked: “Yes, of course: Me.

“No, no, we don’t look at it like that. If none of us score and the game finishes zero-zero – which doesn’t happen often – we are really angry and we get annoyed by that. But when we’re on the pitch and we’re winning, it’s great.”

While Salah has faced criticism over a supposed selfish streak, he can point to the fact that since his arrival at Liverpool in 2017 nobody in the Premier League has created more chances or provided more assists.

He added: “Sometimes people judge you only on your goals, but honestly, [the creativity] is something the gaffer thinks about and talks to me about a lot. I think my team-mates are happy about it too. As long as I feel like am creating chances and giving assists for them, that’s great. Maybe people don’t focus much on that, but I like to give assists as well as score.

“In the last game against Tottenham, I gave Bobby [Roberto Firmino] an assist and I was really happy for him to score. Without assists – and I don’t just mean my assists – you can’t win games.

“Also, I can’t focus too much on just scoring or finishing myself, because that means my game won’t really change and my opponents will figure out how to defend against me. If sometimes I get the ball and create a chance or give an assist, I can confuse them. It’s about being clever.”

Salah is aware that his standing among the global elite means that he has become an easy target for detractors, with it up to him to deliver on expectation and maintain the stunning standards he has set over recent years.

“There is always a lot of pressure when you want to play at the top level, when you want to win trophies and a lot of individual trophies as well,” he said.

“There is of course a big expectation, but the best way to handle it is just to focus on your work and do it in the right way in each game.”

Salah, with 14 goals to his name this season, will be looking to be a talismanic presence for Liverpool again on Sunday when the Premier League leaders take in a home date with Manchester United.

Nathalie Péchalat : « Jean Dujardin me conseille et me soutient »
