Gossip: Man Utd switch focus to £84m double deal

UNITED TARGET EVERTON STRIKER
Manchester United have made sure everyone has heard their version of events surrounding their fruitless pursuit of Erling Haaland but the new Borussia Dortmund striker’s decision still leaves them a striker light ahead of the transfer window.

Monday’s whispers suggested United would just double down on another of their targets despite being a completely different type of player, but Tuesday sees a new name being pulled from Ed Woodward’s hat.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has had a decent month or so in Everton’s attack, scoring five in his last five matches since Marco Silva was given the boot. Just the type of form that would catch Ed’s eye.

The Everton centre-forward possesses two other credentials which seem to have become weirdly important at Old Trafford these days: he’s young and English.

The Sun reckons Calvert-Lewin has gone from ‘back-up plan to THE plan’ at United who would have to fork out around £50million for the 22-year-old. Apparently, he’s been on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s radar ‘for months’ given his potential to replace Romelu Lukaku as ‘a physical presence’.

FERNANDES ON RED DEVILS’ RADAR
Gedson Fernandes ticks the young box but being Portuguese is seemingly not putting United off the Benfica midfielder, if Sky Sports are to be believed.

The 20-year-old is ‘one of a number of targets for the club ahead of the January window’ and it is claimed Fernandes’ representatives have been in England trying to get a head start on finding their client a Premier League club.

Benfica seem quite content with that since Fernandes can’t get into their team at the moment. They would be willing to let the Portugal international go on a try-before-you-buy-for-£34million deal. So what they need now is to create a buzz around the player and if there is one thing United are good for these days, it is certainly that.

CHELSEA PROBING WERNER CLAUSE AMID ABRAHAM STALL
If United really are after a centre-forward, then Timo Werner seems to fit the bill. The RB Leipzig striker has notched 23 goals in 24 games this season and he could be available on the cheap.

According to The Telegraph, Chelsea are trying to clarify exactly how much it would cost to get Germany international out of the new contract he signed with Leipzig in the summer. Some reports say Werner could be available for as little as £25.6million, while others suggest his buy-out clause is around double that sum.

Chelsea are also struggling to keep the strikers they have. Olivier Giroud looks set to leave next month while Goal suggests contract talks with Tammy Abraham are not going as smoothly as they might like.

Apparently, Abraham feels he is entitled to a similar salary as Callum Hudson-Odoi who signed a deal recently that could see him pocket £180,000 a week. You can hardly blame him for asking. Abraham, though, still has two and a half years remaining on his current contract which means Chelsea are not in the same hurry to bow to his demands as they were with Hudson-Odoi.

AND THE REST
Swansea have approached Liverpool over a loan deal for Rhian Brewster… Arsenal could move for RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano with Mikel Arteta focused on reinforcing his defence… Marcos Rojo is preparing to leave Man Utd next month… Liverpool are in talks with Sevilla over defender Diego Carlos… The Reds are also monitoring Vitesse Arnhem left-back Max Clark… Thierry Henry will be in the frame to manage Barcelona should Ernesto Valverde leave the club… Everton are frontrunners to sign Real Madrid star James Rodriguez… Everton have also joined Norwich and QPR as contenders for Dundee United striker Lawrence Shankland… Aston Villa are keen to sign Danny Drinkwater on loan from Chelsea.

Nicholas tips one man to shine in Arsenal v Man Utd prediction

Charlie Nicholas thinks it could be Nicolas Pepe’s moment to shine for Arsenal as they take on Manchester United on New Year’s Day.

After the Gunners threw away a one goal lead to lose 2-1 against Chelsea over the weekend, they have now only won one match in their last 15 in all competitions.

Meanwhile, Man Utd have moved up to fifth in the Premier League – four points off fourth-placed Chelsea – but Nicholas thinks Arsenal will beat Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men tomorrow.

“I cannot give up on them, but Arsenal can’t buy a win at the moment, although it does seem more promising,” Nicholas told Sky Sports.

“There is more fight in there, no confidence, but there is a shape and a tendency to go and try to squeeze the ball. Chelsea are good at keeping it, but they have not quite got the balance of attack right.

“Mesut Ozil is playing better, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is still scoring goals and Bukayo Saka has been class at left-back despite being an attacker.

“You cannot plan for the Bernd Leno howler, but the defence was better but still vulnerable, as were the midfield protectors.

“Man Utd are getting good results, while the counter-attack is so dangerous at the Emirates. I am going to stick with Arsenal, as they can get at the full-backs and defence.

“It seems more pleasant to watch but the table looks awful for Arsenal. They need a win and it is not about closing the gap to the top four as that is fantasy for them this year.

“Mikel Arteta started with a draw and a harsh defeat so it is time for them to get a win. Man Utd will be very dangerous on the counter-attack, but Reiss Nelson has been decent, and Arteta could give Nicolas Pepe a start.

“He may just be ready to come and do something. Arsenal 3-2 Manchester United.”

Arteta says he wants ‘very committed’ Xhaka to stay at Arsenal

Mikel Arteta insists he wants Granit Xhaka to stay at Arsenal as the new boss bids to revamp the Gunners.

Swiss midfielder Xhaka missed Sunday’s 2-1 home defeat by Chelsea due to illness, but has a number of European clubs reportedly still monitoring his situation ahead of the January transfer window.

Xhaka was stripped of the Arsenal captaincy in October after reacting angrily to being booed by Gunners fans.

Hertha Berlin are said to be pushing hard to prise the 27-year-old away from north London, but Arteta maintains he wants Xhaka to stay put.

Asked whether he wants Xhaka to leave, Arteta replied: “I hope not.

“He played at Bournemouth, he played really well, he was very committed, he played a really good game.

“After the game he started to feel ill. He had a temperature and he wasn’t feeling good. The last two days he was in bed. That’s why he wasn’t been selected.”

Arsenal threw away a commanding position in a dismal defeat by Chelsea after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s goal had the Gunners leading into the last 10 minutes.

Bernd Leno’s goalkeeping calamity gifted Jorginho the chance to tap into the empty net before Tammy Abraham fired the winner for the Blues.

Leno raced out and flapped at a Chelsea cross from a free-kick, leaving Jorginho free to net a simple equaliser.

That shock goal let Chelsea steal the win and deny Arteta a dream home debut at the Arsenal helm, leaving the new boss to admit he must now rally round his goalkeeper.

“He will be down. When an error costs the team points, it’s harder,” said Arteta.

“We have to lift him. He’s done a really good job since he joined this football club and we have to respect that.

“We just need to bring the confidence back in and that’s it.”

'You have to leave it behind' – New Monaco boss Moreno keen to move on from Luis Enrique spat

The Ligue 1 side’s new coach was accused of being “disloyal” by his former boss but is keen to move on after taking up a role in France’s top flight

Robert Moreno wants to put his departure as Spain boss and subsequent fallout with Luis Enrique behind him after being unveiled as the new head coach of Ligue 1 side Monaco.

The 42-year-old served as an assistant for La Roja until Luis Enrique stepped down in June to care for his young daughter Xana, who died in August following a battle with bone cancer.

Moreno took charge permanently at that point and oversaw Spain’s qualification for Euro 2020, but Luis Enrique returned in November and did not appoint his former deputy to his staff due to an apparent disagreement.

The former Barcelona boss accused Moreno of being “disloyal” last month, claims the latter described as “ugly and unfair”.

Speaking two days on from being appointed as Leonardo Jardim’s successor at Monaco, Moreno – who previously worked with Luis Enrique at Roma, Celta Vigo and Barcelona – was keen to draw a line under the matter.

“I spent nine wonderful years at his side,” he said at Monday’s unveiling news conference. “I only have thanks. What happened a few weeks ago is already in the past.

“I have been a coach for 28 years. Since I was 14, I have been training and now the important thing is this presentation. The past is there, but you have to leave it behind.”

Moreno has never previously managed a professional club but insists he is aware of what it requires to be successful.

“I have always been involved in the whole training process,” he said. “I used to do all that before, so my processes will not change.

“I will give the talks, analyse the opposition, talk to my players. I am used to this.

“We all want to win and to achieve the best for the club. Our main objective here must be to improve every day. If we do that we will be able to reach our main aims.”

Moreno’s first game in charge is a Coupe de France clash with Reims on Saturday, before returning to Ligue 1 action with a trip to Paris Saint-Germain the following weekend.

Monaco have been tipped to bolster their squad ahead in the January transfer window, but the new coach was unwilling to discuss any specific targets.

“I will not make it public – that would be disrespectful to my players,” he said. “Monaco have a large squad but we have to be attentive to the market to find good players.

“But I am not going to highlight particular positions [to strengthen] in public.”

‘Arteta is going to be one of the best coaches in the world’ – David Luiz tips Arsenal boss for the top

The Brazilian defender has worked with some high-profile managers in his time and believes the Gunners have landed themselves plenty of potential

Mikel Arteta has the full support of David Luiz, with the Brazilian defender saying Arsenal’s new boss “is going to be one of the best coaches in the world”.

The Gunners have turned to a familiar face for inspiration, with a former club captain back at the Emirates Stadium in a first managerial role.

He has been offered an early indication as to the size of the job he has taken on, with just one point taken from his opening two games.

Arteta did, however, get a good grounding working alongside Pep Guardiola at Manchester City and is expected to become a top manager in his own right.

Luiz, who has played under the likes of Jose Mourinho, Laurent Blanc and Antonio Conte in the past, told Sky Sports after seeing Arsenal suffer a 2-1 derby defeat to Chelsea: “For me, Arteta is going to be one of the best coaches in the world.

“I have had the opportunity to have many coaches during my career.

“He is intelligent, he was a player, he is clever. I think he’s going to be one of the best, but it’s part of our job to help him do that, especially in the beginning because everybody doubts.

“But I really trust in this philosophy, I really trust in the way he sees football. That’s why we could see Arsenal dominate the first half with amazing football, with a lot of quality.

“I think if we scored the second goal, it would have been a different game.”

Arteta is expected to put his own stamp on a squad inherited from Unai Emery, with Luiz among those to have already seen signs of encouragement.

He added: “He knows football. When you know football, it is much easier to explain. It’s much easier to try to help and it’s much easier to understand the heads of the players on the pitch.

“It’s not an easy job for him, especially coming in the middle of the season.

“He didn’t choose the players or anything, but he’s going to try to do his best and we as players have to try to do our best too because this club deserves to shine. It deserves to play amazing football like in the first half.

“We are not in the best position in the table. It has not been a very good year for us. But there is still the possibility to improve, to learn, and to do what we did in the first half.

“I think everybody saw a team with personality, with ideas, with a connection with the fans, with top players.

“I think Mikel is trying to impose his philosophy as soon as possible.

“We have a lot of players with talent and a lot of players who are going to be top players in the future. They are trying to learn quickly.

“Then it is up to us to try to get some points and results because we need that.”

Arsenal, who have slumped to 12th in the Premier League table, will be back in action on New Year’s Day at home to Manchester United.
