Quiet People, un jour à Zagreb Bande-annonce VO

His Company Makes Speakers. Now He’s Speaking Out, Opposing Tariffs

Dan Digre, who owns a Minnesota factory, Misco, that makes speakers, says tariffs are hurting his ability to compete.

Updated at 10:27 a.m. ET

The Misco speaker company in St. Paul, Minn., is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. But the company’s future is uncertain — a result of the trade war between the U.S. and China.

Dan Digre’s dad started Misco after serving in World War II.

“He was a B-17 radio operator and came back to the United States and married a woman with a bad radio,” Digre says. “Turned out the radio wasn’t bad but the speaker was bad, so he started his own speaker repair business.”

Today, Misco employs about 100 people in the Twin Cities and manufactures a wide variety of speakers for musicians, home theater buffs, even drive-through restaurants.

Digre, who’s now the company’s president, says there used to be a substantial speaker industry in the United States. But over the past two decades, most manufactures moved offshore. And their suppliers moved with them.

“Either suppliers went to China or they probably went out of business,” Digre says.

His factory is still in Minnesota, but it depends on some components imported from China. Since last fall, the company has had to pay tariffs on those components — tariffs that are now 25%. Ironically, if Digre built whole speakers in China, like some of his competitors do, he’d have to pay only a 15% import tax.

Digre has tried passing some of his tariff bill on to customers, and he has asked component suppliers for a tariff discount. But the company has had to absorb most of the extra cost itself.

“It comes out of our bottom line,” Digre says. “And that’s the money that we need to be reinvesting in new technology, in new products — all of the things that makes your business competitive in a global economy.”

Every time Digre imports components from China, he gets a bill from U.S. Customs and Border Protection saying how much he owes in tariffs.

“A surprising number of people that I talk to — you know, smart, intelligent, well-read people — think that somehow China is paying the tariffs,” Digre says.

Perhaps that’s because President Trump keeps making that claim. Recently, Trump told Fox News he’s in no hurry to make a deal with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

“He wants to make it much more than I want to make it,” Trump said. “I’m not anxious to make it. We’re taking in hundreds of billions of dollars in tariffs.”

The actual tariff bill is tens of billions of dollars, not hundreds of billions. And for China to absorb that cost, researchers at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York said last week that Chinese suppliers would have to cut their prices by about 20%. So far, the price of Chinese imports has fallen just 2%.

Americans are paying the rest.

“This is a tax that is not on foreigners. This is a tax on our own people,” Rep. Jim Cooper, D-Tenn., complained at a recent congressional briefing. “This is a tax unilaterally imposed by the executive branch.”

The trade war has contributed to a slowdown in manufacturing in recent months. U.S. factory activity has declined for four consecutive months.

At his speaker factory in Minnesota, Digre says the higher cost of components is only part of the problem.

“A tweet could come out this afternoon that could dramatically change a tariff rate,” he said.

Uncertainty over tariffs and other trade policy has left businesspeople wary of spending money in recent months. Business investment fell at a 2.7% rate in the third quarter. Digre says the longer the tariffs remain in place, the more that decisions and investments are postponed.

“That’s, I think, one of the drags that American businesses are feeling right now,” Digre says. “None of us know what it’s going to look like in a year, in two years, even two weeks.”

This week, Digre is traveling to the Philippines to look for alternative components he could buy without having to pay a tariff. It’s a costly and time-consuming process.

“We’re trying to keep building speakers here in the U.S., but there’s only a couple of us left in the country to do it,” Digre says. “And if these tariffs go on a lot longer, I don’t know if there will be anybody left in this country to do it.”

Ultimately, Digre says, he might have to move his whole factory overseas — exactly the opposite of what the president said he wanted when he started this trade war.

Chelsea captain makes bold claim about ‘amazing’ Abraham

Chelsea captain Cesar Azpiliceuta has backed Tammy Abraham to finish his breakthrough season with the Premier League’s golden boot.

Abraham scored his 11th League goal of the season against Aston Villa on his return from injury on Wednesday night, putting him three behind top scorer Jamie Vardy in the goalscoring charts.

He netted 26 goals on loan at Villa in the Championship last term and Azpilicueta believes the academy graduate has the ability to overtake Vardy and finish the campaign on top of the pile.

“If Tammy scores the most goals, then the team will do better as well,” said Azpiliceuta. “It is something we are looking at as a team and I am confident that he can get many more goals because of the way he is working and improving since he started pre-season.

“It is amazing and he has the potential to go even higher. We know we are still in December with a lot of games, but with his passion and hunger, he is capable of getting to the top, for sure.

“He is second after Vardy. Vardy is doing an amazing season with a lot of goals and Tammy is behind him, so if he is there it is because he deserves to be. He is scoring goals. Not only is he scoring goals, he is playing for the team, recovering the ball and he made a tackle in our own half that was an amazing effort for him.

“He made an assist against Villa as well. I am not just looking into his goals as a number because he is doing more than that.”

Abraham has established himself as head coach Frank Lampard’s first-choice striker ahead of Belgium international Michy Batshuayi and France World Cup winner Olivier Giroud.

“His desire is amazing,” Azpilicueta added. “When he was injured, he wanted to come back as soon as possible. I think for him it was special to play against Aston Villa where he got promoted to the Premier League and where he had an amazing spell there.

“So for him, it was a special game. I am very happy for him because he showed that strength of character to play, score and get an assist. He was key for us.

“He made his debut a few years ago with us. Then he went on loan to Swansea. Last year, to Aston Villa and he was amazing. The way you saw him scoring goals. He was playing with confidence in the Championship which is not an easy League to play for a young lad.

“He showed his desire in pre-season to be a striker for Chelsea. It is something he has dreamt about and he worked for it all the way through the academy. He got his chance and is making the most of it.”

Report reveals boost for Man Utd in cut-price Haaland deal

Manchester United will be boosted by the news that Erling Braut Haaland could be available for just €20m in January, according to reports.

The Red Bull Salzburg striker is one of the brightest prospects in Europe, having scored eight Champions League goals and 15 Austrian Bundesliga goals so far this season.

Both United and Liverpool are reportedly interested in securing the services of Haaland, as well as other top clubs from around Europe, but there were suggestions that they could be put off by their €100m asking price.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been coy when asked about the 19-year-old previously, although in September he admitted: “It was nice watching the game last night, it was great watching him. Everyone is excited by his development.”

And Bild, who cover the story from a Borussia Dortmund perspective (via Sport Witness), claims that Haaland could in fact be available for €20m and not the €100m mentioned elsewhere.

Rumours in Germany last month had suggested that there could be a release clause in Haaland’s contract that would allow him to leave for €30m (suggesting that only Red Bull Leipzig could trigger it) – but now Bild claim there is a clause that would mean he could leave for €20m in January.

The report says the clause is ‘favourable’ to Dortmund but don’t make clear whether it would be applicable to all clubs.

Bild says ‘According to BILD information, the Norwegian can leave Salzburg in January for around 20 million euros,’ which, as Sport Witness point out, sounds like the clause is open to offers from any club.

That will be music to the ears of the Man Utd transfer bosses, who are understood to be looking at bringing in a striker over the January transfer window.

Chelsea boss Lampard allays Abraham injury fear, provides update on RLC

Frank Lampard has allayed injury fears surrounding Tammy Abraham, with the Chelsea striker considered to be “alright” after coming off in the 2-1 win over Aston Villa.

The England international striker had only just returned from a hip injury and was withdrawn seven minutes from time, on this occasion with a knee complaint, but Lampard claims it was merely a precaution.

Abraham had returned to the starting lineup with a bang, recording his 11th Premier League goal of the season and 12th in all competitions as Chelsea got back to winning ways.

Lampard said: “It doesn’t seem too bad in there, so I’m presuming that he’s alright.

“He’s a personality that’s growing in our dressing room every day with his enthusiasm and his will to win.

“Tammy is a striker that’s near the top of the goalscoring charts in the league, he’s showing his all-round game, stretches defences, and he starts our press.

“And of course if a player’s on such a good run it’s normal that if they go out of the team that you can miss them, and today he came straight back in as he left off.”

While being confident that Abraham will continue to play a prominent role for Chelsea over the coming weeks, Lampard admits to still being unsure as to when Ruben Loftus-Cheek will come back into contention.

The 23-year-old playmaker has been out of action since rupturing his Achilles during a post-season friendly clash with MLS side the New England Revolution in May.

“He’s had a few setbacks over the last two months,” Lampard said of a man who has previously stated that positive progress was being made in his recovery.

“He hasn’t had a new one [injury], but he’s not flying along as much as we would want, and it’s not for the want of trying from everybody.

“For Ruben himself of course there’s nothing worse than being injured. But at the moment he’s no closer to being fit.”

Former player asks whether Man Utd can finish eighth

Former Manchester United defender Paul Parker has questioned whether the club can finish eighth under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Red Devils beat Tottenham 2-1 last night in the Premier League to lift them up to sixth in the standings, however they could be knocked down to eighth if Sheffield United and Arsenal win on Thursday night.

And Parker thinks there is a possibility that Man Utd won’t finish as high as eighth if they give away more “soft points” this season.

Parker said on talkSPORT on Thursday: “Can they finish eighth?

“You have to look where they are at this moment in time, the games where they’ve dropped points and people may say even then they won’t finish eighth. They’ve given away soft points.”

The pressure will have eased slightly on Solskjaer after their win over Jose Mourinho’s side on Wednesday but Parker believes the Norwegian “should be gone”.

“All the stats say that he [Solskjaer] shouldn’t be in a job and other managers may have slightly better stats,” Parker added.

“I think I know and everyone else knows that he should be gone but I look at what can happen next and I don’t see any different that can happen from when Jose Mourinho arrived.

“It’s all about what’s happening above in and around that club. It’s still not a good environment for a top manager to come into.

“There needs to be a football-orientated person to take control of the buying and selling of players.”

Is Benzema able to switch allegiance from France? Real Madrid star’s international options explained

The Blancos forward has been locked in international limbo with France and appears keen to play for another team, but can it be done?

Karim Benzema is one of the most accomplished and prolific strikers in world football, shining for Real Madrid over the course of the past decade.

However, his success at club level – which includes four Champions Leagues, two Liga titles and four Club World Cups – has not been mirrored at international level with France.

The Madrid frontman missed out on Euro 2016, in which France – the hosts – were beaten finalists, and he was forced to watch on in envy as Les Bleus clinched their second world title at the 2018 World Cup.

With no end in sight to his France exclusion, there have been suggestions that he could potentially play for another national team, but is it possible? Goal takes a look at the story.

Contents

Why is Karim Benzema not playing for France?

Benzema’s exile from the France squad began in the aftermath of an acrimonious sex tape dispute with former Les Bleus team-mate Mathieu Valbuena in 2015.

The Madrid striker has not featured for the national team since then, having been placed on an apparently indefinite suspension by the president of the French Football Federation (FFF), Noel Le Graet.

Despite assertions from France icons such as Zinedine Zidane in 2019 that Benzema merits a recall to the international team, Le Graet insists that the “adventure with France is over” for the forward.

That pronouncement from the FFF chief prompted a furious response from Benzema, who subsequently challenged the federation to allow him to play for another country.

“Noel, I thought that you did not interfere with the decisions of the national team coach!” the striker wrote on Twitter.

“Know that it will be me and me alone who decides when my international career is over.

“If you think that I am finished, let me play for a country that I am eligible to play for and we will see.”

Which international teams is Karim Benzema eligible to play for?

Benzema is currently only eligible to play for France, strictly speaking. The reason for that is because he has played competitively at senior level for Les Bleus, meaning he is effectively cap-tied.

FIFA eligibility rules for national teams dictate that, once a player has been capped competitively at ‘A’ level – in other words, at senior level – they cannot switch to a team they may have also been eligible to play for.

In addition to France, Lyon-born Benzema was previously eligible to play for Algeria thanks to his familial links to the north African country.

In 2006, prior to his senior debut for France, he was approached by representatives from the Algerian football association (FAF) who sought to persuade him to play for them.

However, he declined the invitation, telling RMC: “Algeria is my parents’ country and it is in my heart, but I will play for the France national team.”

Interestingly, following Benzema’s comments in November 2019, Algeria coach Djamel Belmadi simply replied: “I’m very happy with the players I have.”

Had Benzema not played competitively for France or any other national team, he could well have become eligible to represent Spain due to his long-term residency in the country while playing for Real Madrid.

The striker has been living in Spain for over a decade and would be able to apply for Spanish citizenship, which is the first step in being eligible to represent La Roja.

Can Karim Benzema switch international team?

Unfortunately for Benzema a change of international team is not likely any time soon, unless FIFA makes an exceptional ruling in his favour.

The fact that he has played competitively at senior level for France means that he is not free to switch allegiance to another team under world football’s universally applied eligibility rules.

FIFA’s position on not allowing competitively capped players to switch international team allegiance was upheld as recently as 2018 when the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled against Munir El Haddadi.

The former Barcelona forward played only once for Spain – in a competitive match in 2014 – and wished to change allegiance to Morocco. However, his case was dismissed by FIFA and subsequently by the CAS.

Benzema has played 81 times for France (roughly half of those being competitive games), scoring 27 goals – a strike tally that places him in the top 10 goalscorers of all time in the history of the national team.

However, he has not featured for Les Bleus since the 4-0 friendly victory over Armenia in October 2015, a game in which he scored twice.

Under current eligibility rules, the only way Benzema will be free to change national team allegiance is if he suddenly loses his French nationality without his consent or against his will.

Failing that, it would require a rule change or an extraordinary allowance made just for him by FIFA.

Emilie Schneider

Rain Man Bande-annonce VO
