Alain Delon, Patrick Dewaere, Jean-Pierre Cassel…

The Florida Project de Sean Baker

Will Hunting 2 : Hunting Season.

The Majestic (2001)

New York – Section criminelle – S04E21 (2005)

Happy Feet 2 (2011)
Matt Damon aime l’animation. Will the Krill !

Thor : Ragnarok (2017)

BONUS – Jimmy Kimmel Live

As Climate Talks Begin, U.N. Chief Warns Against ‘Fiddling’ While The Planet Burns

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres at the opening day of the COP25 climate conference on Monday in Madrid. “Do we really want to be remembered as the generation that buried its head in the sand? That fiddled while the planet burned?” he said.

The United Nations climate change conference began with a bracing warning: We are running late, and that is going to make this harder.

“Millions throughout the world, especially young people, are calling on leaders from all sectors to do more, much more to address the climate emergency we face,” U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres said on Monday.

“Do we really want to be remembered as the generation that buried its head in the sand? That fiddled while the planet burned?” he said.

A key objective of the conference, called COP25, is for nations to commit to how they will operationally achieve the emissions reductions agreed to in the 2015 Paris climate accord.

Countries signing the Paris Agreement agreed to limit global warming to less than 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial levels, and ideally 1.5 degrees. But we are rapidly losing the chance to hit that 1.5-degree mark, according to a U.N. report released last week.

“Ten years ago, if countries had acted on the science, they would have needed to reduce emissions by 3.3% each year,” said Guterres. “Today, we need to reduce emissions by 7.6% each year.”

Some 250,000 representatives from 200 countries are taking part. Much of the focus this year will be on China, which burns half of the coal used globally each year — making it the world’s biggest emitter of greenhouse gases. The burning of the Amazon rainforest is also a major cause for concern.

COP25 was supposed to take place in Chile, but anti-government protests and police repression there spurred Chile’s government to bow out.

Madrid then volunteered to host the two-week summit. Spain’s interim prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, said Monday that “only a handful of fanatics deny the evidence” of climate change.

President Trump announced in 2017 that the U.S. would withdraw from the Paris accord. The U.S. technically remains a member until November 2020, and its official contingent in Madrid is led by Ambassador Marcia Bernicat, a senior State Department official.

There’s another delegation from the U.S., too: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is there with a group of 15 Democratic members of Congress.

Pelosi said the U.S. is still committed to the 2015 Paris Agreement, despite the Trump administration’s decision to pull out.

“We’re still in it,” she said.

One of the conference’s best-known attendees is on her way. Greta Thunberg, the 16-year-old climate activist, had planned to go to Chile overland from the United States, where she just wrapped up a tour meeting with officials and students.

But when COP25 was suddenly moved to Spain, Thunberg needed to find a boat heading to Europe, as she eschews air travel because of its high emissions. She hitched a ride with some YouTube-famous sailors and is now slated to arrive in Lisbon, Portugal, on Tuesday morning. (The catamaran’s location can be tracked online.)

Even from a boat in the middle of the Atlantic, Thunberg kept up her Friday ritual: striking for action on climate change.

Most Japanese firms want Abe to finish term, but only 16% support him staying longer

A majority of Japanese firms want Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to finish his current term to September 2021 but fewer than one in five say he should stay beyond then, a Reuters poll has showed as allegations that he broke campaign laws erode public support.

Opposition lawmakers allege Abe favored supporters with invites to an annual state-funded cherry blossom-viewing party and may have broken campaign laws by subsidizing backers’ attendance at a reception the night before. Questions have also arisen over whether a gangster attended the state-funded event and why this year’s invitation list was shredded.

The prime minister has denied any wrongdoing.

Abe quit after his first, troubled term from 2006 to 2007. He returned to office in December 2012 promising to revive the economy. In November, he became Japan’s longest serving prime minister, breaking a record set over a century ago.

“A lengthy administration invites concentration of power and corruption may easily emerge, but there is no other politician with the experience and ability,” a manager at a textile firm said in a written response to the recent poll, explaining why they thought Abe should stay on.

Fifty-nine percent of respondents said Abe should complete his term as Liberal Democratic Party leader but then step down. Another 16 percent want him to stay longer.

An extension of Abe’s time in office would require a rule change by the LDP, whose president is virtually assured the role of prime minister if the party stays in power.

Twenty-five percent, though, said he should quit sooner.

“Domestically there is a feeling of stagnation, and friction with neighboring countries has emerged,” wrote a manager at a transport-equipment firm.

Japan’s relations with U.S. ally South Korea have chilled due to a feud over their shared wartime legacy, although ties with China have improved.

Media polls have shown the cherry blossom affair chipping away at voter support, although backing for the fragmented opposition remains weak. A Mainichi newspaper survey published Monday showed a six point drop in support for Abe’s Cabinet, to 42 percent, from October.

The decline has not ended speculation that Abe might call a snap Lower House election to renew his mandate.

Former Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba, an outspoken Abe critic, topped — by a narrow margin — the list of lawmakers respondents want to see in the prime minister’s role when Abe’s term ends, with 17 percent to Abe’s 16 percent. Shinjiro Koizumi was preferred by 11 percent.

The corporate survey, conducted from Nov. 20 to Dec. 2 for Reuters by Nikkei Research, canvassed 502 big and midsize nonfinancial companies. Roughly 240 firms answered the questions on politics on condition of anonymity, in order to be able to express opinions freely.

Girls revive previously male-dominated cheering squads

Typical cheerleading clubs in schools, known as ōendan, consist of men clad in black gakuran stand-up collar uniforms yelling vigorously and performing synchronized, dynamic choreographed moves to support sports teams.

While the traditional activity is becoming less popular among male students, many ōendan across the nation have been attracting girls in recent years.

At Aichi Prefectural Toyohashi Minami High School in the city of Toyohashi, 10 out of 11 ōendan members are female students.

On Nov. 17, the members wore black uniforms, white headbands and white gloves as they performed at an event held at a community center in the city, shouting “Osu!” — a common exclamation in Japan — and “Hooray, hooray!” amid loud applause from local residents.

The school’s ōendan had been active since it was established in 1978, but the number of members eventually began to decline, finally dropping to zero in 2008.

In 2015, the school recruited new members so it could revive the club following requests from the club’s alumni, who said it was sad not to have any squad to cheer the school’s baseball team. And those who volunteered to join were all female students, meaning girls belonged to the club for the first time in its history. Since then, members of the club have been increasing year by year, with most joining being girls.

“I was worried at first to see only female members, but their performances are bright and lively,” said Takahiko Maruyama, a 55-year-old teacher at the high school who is an alumnus and supervisor of the club.

The members say they joined the club for a variety of reasons, including being impressed by girls wearing gakuran uniforms and being sports fan. One member said she was influenced by the 2008 movie “Fure Fure Shojo” (“Hooray Hooray Girl”), which features a high school girl becoming a leader of an ōendan to revive the club.

Most of the members are also members of other clubs, such as a brass band, drama, tennis and badminton.

Since it was resumed, the club has been led mostly by female students. “Because most members are girls, boys may feel reluctant to join,” said Rio Yamada, 17, the 42nd leader of the club. “But gender doesn’t matter when it comes to wanting to cheer others.”

The members have watched videos of performances by ōendan of other high schools and universities on the internet and created their own cheering style.

“Compared with other schools (with male members), we can’t shout in a deep voice and our fist pump performance may not look as powerful,” Yamada said. “But there are things that only we can do.”

After their practices, they go to a cafe together and have girl talk while eating parfait and cakes. Yodai Suzuki, 16, the only male member of the club, said he participates in such chats. “I don’t feel uncomfortable and I don’t feel any gender differences,” he said.

At Gifu Commercial and Business High School in the city of Gifu, all of its 14 ōendan members are girls. According to Yuko Koizumi, a teacher and supervisor of the club, the club has only had female members for the past decade. “They are cheering wildly just like boys,” Koizumi said.

As for university ōendan, at Waseda University, a woman became one of the 15 members who lead the performances for the first time in 2011. In 2017, Meiji University’s ōendan had a female leader, a first for an ōendan of the Tokyo Big6 Baseball League, an intercollegiate baseball league comprising Hosei University, Keio University, Meiji University, Rikkyo University, University of Tokyo and Waseda University.

Meanwhile, an association made up of ōendan at six universities based in Kyushu said as many as three of the clubs have female leaders this year.

The leaders of the 69-year-old ōendan at Meijo University in Nagoya have been women for the past three years.

“Both men and women share the soul and ambition that lie at the heart of cheerleading,” said a Meijo University spokesperson. “I think the willingness of women (to participate in ōendan) is offering an opportunity to think about what cheerleading is all about.”

Chinese incursions near Japan-held islands top 1,000 to hit record, up 80% on last year

The number of Chinese maritime incursions near Japanese-held islands in the East China Sea soared to a record this year, illustrating simmering tensions between Asia’s two biggest economies.

Chinese government ships, including coast guard vessels, have entered what Japan considers its exclusive waters more than 1,000 times this year, according to data from the Japan Coast Guard. That’s on track for an 80 percent increase over last year, and far more than any year since 2012, when China began making regular incursions around the islands.

The patrols — along with the recent detention and release of a Japanese academic accused by China of stealing state secrets — show how key disputes between the two neighbors remain unresolved even as they publicly tout warming ties.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is expected to hold talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping during his planned visit to China later this month, Chinese Vice President Wang Qishan said Friday. It will be Abe’s second trip to China in little more than a year, and he is hoping to host Xi on a state visit next year.

The remark by Wang, a close aide to Xi, came during a meeting in Beijing with Shigeru Kitamura, a former top intelligence officer who has served as Abe’s national security adviser since September.

While it’s unclear what’s driving the uptick in maritime incursions, Beijing has long sought for Tokyo to formally acknowledge the dispute over the small, uninhabited islands, known as the Senkakus in Japan and the Diaoyus in China. A decision by Abe’s predecessor in 2012 to purchase some of the islands prompted a wave of anti-Japanese demonstrations and boycotts and led Beijing to step up maritime patrols.

The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Beijing didn’t respond to a request for comment Thursday. China holds that the islands — located just north of Taiwan and surrounded by potential natural gas deposits — are part of its historical territory that should have been returned with the rest of Japan’s colonial possessions after World War II.

Abe has spent much of his seven-year tenure trying to repair ties with China while maintaining Tokyo’s postwar alliance with Washington. That effort has been tested in recent months by Japanese officials’ defense of peaceful protests in Hong Kong and Tokyo’s move to effectively exclude Huawei Technologies Co. from government contracts.

At least 14 Japanese citizens have been detained in China since 2015, according to Japan’s Foreign Ministry. Five have since been released while another nine remain in custody under accusations of violating national security laws.

The increased maritime patrols will make Abe’s balancing act more difficult during his visit to China, where he is also expected to hold a trilateral summit with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

Fisheries cooperatives in Okinawa Prefecture, where the islands are located, have complained about being forced away from waters due to Chinese patrols while right-wing politicians have encouraged Abe to take a hard line with China in the territorial dispute.

“China is engaging in unilateral and coercive attempts to change the status quo based on its own assertions incompatible with the existing international order, and has been expanding and intensifying its military activities in maritime and aerial domains,” the Japanese Defense Ministry said in annual policy paper published in September.

Chelsea win appeal over transfer ban, able to sign players in January

Chelsea’s transfer ban has been lifted, freeing up boss Frank Lampard to make signings in the January window.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has halved Chelsea’s two-window FIFA transfer ban and their financial sanction, after the west London club’s appeal.

The Blues were hit with the FIFA transfer embargo last season on issues relating to the signing of overseas youth players.

“The sole arbitrator found that CFC did violate Articles 19.1 (related to the international transfer of minors) and 19.3 (related to the first registration of minors), but for a significantly smaller number of players (about one third of the violations found by FIFA),” read a CAS statement.

“In addition, the violations of other RSTP rules were found to be less serious than those attributed to Chelsea FC by FIFA.

“Accordingly, the Sole Arbitrator reduced the sanction to one single transfer ban (which Chelsea FC already served during the 2019 summer registration period), and halved the monetary sanction.”

Chelsea will now be able to sign new recruits in January, with a left-back a priority for manager Lampard.

The Blues can also look at a replacement for Eden Hazard, who left for Real Madrid in the summer on a deal that could rise as high as £150million.

Swiss-based CAS confirmed it had “modified” FIFA’s sanctions following Chelsea’s appeal, halving the length of the transfer ban and also cutting the club’s fine in two.

The CAS statement read: “The following sanctions have now been imposed by the CAS: Chelsea is banned from registering any new players, either nationally or internationally for one entire registration period, which the club already served during the 2019 summer registration period.

“Chelsea is ordered to pay a fine to FIFA of the amount of 300,000 Swiss Francs.

“The warning and the reprimand are confirmed.”

Louis Saha picks out three stars Man Utd should target in January

Former Manchester United striker Louis Saha believes his former club should try to sign Edinson Cavani, Jadon Sancho and Samuel Umtiti.

Saha, who played for United for five years, believes United need to strengthen their squad next month and he thinks the addition of Paris Saint-German forward Cavani would push Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford to greater heights.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is light in attack having opted to allow Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez to join Inter Milan during the summer.

Martial is currently injured, which meant 18-year-old Mason Greenwood was handed his first Premier League start of the season in the win over Tottenham.

Solskjaer has hinted that he is chasing new additions in January and he told Sky Sports in October that he was open to add some experienced players.

“January is a difficult window, anyway,” he said. “But if there are players available and at the right price, I’m sure we will spend.

“There might be some experienced players who can come in and help the younger players – that might be worth the money.”

And Saha is convinced Uruguay ace Cavani – who United have been linked with in the past – would be perfect for Solskjaer.

“Manchester United are the Premier League team that need to strengthen the most in January and they should look at signing Edinson Cavani from PSG,” Saha told Bwin.

“They need to bring in players to challenge the existing players and create competition; Cavani would push Rashford and Martial and make them even better.

“Sir Alex [Ferguson] didn’t like signing players in the January transfer window but times are different now; United need to strengthen sooner rather than later.

“I would love to see Cavani join the Premier League; he would be a great signing for Manchester United.”

The former striker also believes Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho, who is understood to be a target for United, would be an ideal recruit for United, along with Barcelona’s Samuel Umtiti.

“I’d also love to see Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho or Barcelona’s Samuel Umtiti; they would both fit right into the Premier League,” added Saha.
