Tu vas me manquer.”

Il va me manquer.

Democratic Bill Aims To Block Title IX Rule Changes Pushed By Trump Administration

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos testifies before the House Education and Labor Committee in 2019.

A bill introduced in the House Tuesday aims to block Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos from implementing changes she’s seeking in Title IX rules.

Four Democratic congresswomen introduced the legislation, as the Department of Education prepares to revise Title IX rules that govern how colleges and universities that receive federal funding handle sexual assault.

The legislation would likely face an uphill battle in the GOP-controlled Senate. A companion bill hasn’t been introduced there yet.

The Title IX rule changes, first proposed in November 2018, aren’t likely to be finalized before the end of the year. The Office of Management and Budget is currently reviewing the regulations and has scheduled meetings with stakeholders through the beginning of February.

NPR has requested comment from the Department of Education on the legislation and on when the rules are expected to be finalized.

The Trump administration rules would replace Obama-era guidelines with rules the secretary says would bolster the rights of the accused. The revisions are expected to, among other changes, allow schools to make it harder to support allegations by raising the burden of proof needed to find a student responsible. The changes would also guarantee students the right to indirectly cross-examine each other.

One of the sponsors of the Democratic bill, Rep. Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich., represents a district home to Michigan State University, where the sports medicine doctor Larry Nassar worked before he was sentenced to decades in prison for abusing young gymnasts.

“I cannot understand why Secretary DeVos continues to move forward with proposed changes to Title IX that make it harder for victims to come forward with a successful claim,” Slotkin wrote in a statement. “I have done everything I can think of to appeal to Secretary DeVos to change course: I’ve submitted a formal comment on the rules and sent letters opposing her proposed changes, I’ve sent Freedom of Information requests, and met with her personally, all with the goal of reversing course.”

When the public comment period ended last winter, the Education Department had received about 100,000 comments, ranging from praising the changes for “restoring sanity” to the process, to deeming the rules a “step backwards.”

As NPR’s Tovia Smith has reported, many schools are among those concerned about Devos’ expected changes:

Unlike the Obama administration guidelines, the DeVos proposals, if implemented, will carry the force of law, without having the approval of Congress.

Solskjaer gives latest updates on Pogba and Man Utd injuries

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Manchester United are still hopeful that Paul Pogba will be back before the end of the year.

The 26-year-old has not featured since September due to an ankle injury and returned to the north-west at the end of November after a spell of rehabilitation in Miami.

However, the matches against Tottenham and Manchester City came to soon for Pogba and Solskjaer says he is still not ready to play.

There were positive updates though over the fitness of United pair Nemanja Matic and Diogo Dalot.

“No, it’s too early yet,” Solskjaer said (via the MEN) when asked about Pogba‘s fitness.

“We hope [he will be back before the end of the year], he’s working hard to get fit so hopefully we can get him back on the pitch.

“Matic is fit and due to be involved, yeah. He’s just started training. Dalot? One day training, so it’s a bit too early for Diogo.”

Door ‘suddenly shut’ on Tottenham’s ‘luxury alternative’ to Kane

Tottenham’s January transfer window pursuit of Roma striker Edin Dzeko is over before it had even begun, according to reports.

Dzeko has scored eight goals in 17 starts for the Serie A side this term and now has 95 goals in 198 appearances for Roma.

On Sunday, the Daily Mirror said that new Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho wanted Dzeko as back-up for Harry Kane.

And those claims have been backed up in the Corriere dello Sport (via Sport Witness), who say Spurs have ‘contacted his agent’  with Mourinho looking to bring in a ‘luxury alternative’ to Kane.

A ‘few signals’ have reached Roma’s hierarchy but the door has ‘suddenly shut’ on Tottenham until at least the summer.

Roma boss Paulo Fonseca regards Dzeko as an ‘irreplaceable player’ and Mourinho will have to ‘look elsewhere’ in the January window.

It remains to be seen how much backing the Portuguese manager will get in the transfer window with the likes of Kalidou Koulibaly also linked with a move to north London.

Lampard names position Chelsea want to strengthen in January

Frank Lampard has hinted that Chelsea will look to properly replace Eden Hazard’s goals and assists in the January transfer window.

The Belgium international left in the summer transfer window to join Spanish giants Real Madrid after he scored 16 goals and provided 15 assists in the Premier League last season.

Tammy Abraham is doing extremely well with 11 goals and three assists this term but then Christian Pulisic is the next best with five goals and two assists.

And Lampard admits, despite still occupying that all-important final Champions League place, that Chelsea must try to bring in a creative winger at the top of the pitch.

“I think it will be a bit fluid and discussions will be ongoing from now about where we can strengthen,” Lampard told BT Sport.

“Of course, with Eden leaving we lost a lot of goals and creation in that particular position.

“Today we’ve missed some chances and we can look at strengthening and pushing and getting more competition in those areas.”

Pep explains what Foden needs to do to succeed Silva at Man City

Pep Guardiola is confident Phil Foden can fill the boots of David Silva at Manchester City, and has revealed what he needs to improve to reach his level.

Foden, 19, is set for a rare start as City wrap up their Champions League Group C campaign against Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia.

Veteran playmaker Silva has not travelled due to injury but, as he has already announced he is to leave the club at the end of the season, it could be a foretaste of the future.

Foden has long been earmarked as the natural successor to Silva but he has had to wait patiently for his opportunities so far.

City boss Guardiola said: “That is our wish (that he can replace Silva). Of course David is a legend, with the amount of games and titles he has won, but it’s our wish and we believe he can do it.

“He’s growing from last season. There are still some departments he can improve. Sometimes he takes decisions with character and spirit because he is so young, but sometimes he has to think a bit more about decision-making, especially without the ball.

“But it’s normal with his age. His development is perfect. We are more than satisfied with what he is doing with his training and when he plays.”

City have nothing riding on the game in Croatia having already secured top spot in the group and their place in the last 16.

Defender Eric Garcia, 18, is another youngster set to be given an opportunity. City’s problems at centre-back have continued with John Stones suffering a hamstring injury in the loss to Manchester United on Saturday and he is facing a spell out. Fernandinho is also suspended for the Dinamo clash.

Guardiola said: “The two young players are here but all the (rest of the) squad are here and we are going to put a better squad than fans were thinking.

“We are already qualified and the Premier League is more important than the Champions League right now, and we’ll make some changes, but we will try to make a good result.”

'You see how good they are' – Liverpool boss Klopp gives 'massive respect' to vanquished Red Bull Salzburg

The Austrian side impressed in Tuesday’s Champions League tie before ultimately falling to the defending champions

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has hailed the “unbelievably strong” Red Bull Salzburg side that his club eliminated from the Champions League on Tuesday.

The Reds travelled to Austria with plenty at stake in their Group E finale, knowing that defeat would see them exit the competition and Salzburg seal progression to the last 16.

Salzburg started the game brightly, fashioning several good chances in the first half but failing to capitalise.

And they were made to pay in the second half as a quickfire double from Naby Keita and Mohamed Salah gave Liverpool a 2-0 win and clinched a last-16 berth for the defending champions.

After the match Klopp was full of praise for Jesse Marsch’s team, who will have to be content with a place in the Europa League with Napoli also progressing from Group E in second place behind the holders.

“I couldn’t have more respect for what Salzburg are doing,” Klopp said in his post-match press conference. “I know how people see it, you think about being best in Austria is OK but some people don’t respect that.”

Salzburg also showed their quality in their first meeting with Liverpool in October, a thrilling 4-3 win for Klopp’s men, as well as a 1-1 draw away against Napoli in November.

“You see how good they are, how good they were in the first game, how good they were against Napoli,” Klopp continued.

“Salzburg were unbelievably strong especially in the first half but we were as well and were ready for the fight. We should have scored in the first half and then in the second half, it’s not easy to keep that intensity.

“We scored the goals and could have scored more, but I have really massive respect for Salzburg.”

Marsch expressed his disappointment with the outcome, but also insisted he was proud of his side’s effort.

“We’re so disappointed because we started so well in this tournament and we played so well until the first goal,” the American told UEFA.com.

“We saw our opponent’s quality from the first minute. We had two chances with Hwang [Hee-chan] and [Erling] Haaland that we normally would have scored, but [Virgil] van Dijk was too good. It’s disappointing but I think in a few days we will look back with pride.

“We said we’d need our best performance to win this game and we gave it until the first goal. I think things would have been different if we had scored first. But in the end they showed their quality, especially the second goal from Salah.

“It was like a heavyweight fight; they hit us, we hit them, and then they hit us twice for the knockout.”

Sporting Kansas City has announced the acquisition of Mexico international striker Alan Pulido as a Designated Player.

Pulido joins from Chivas de Guadalajara for a club-record transfer fee, reported to be in the region of $9.5 million.

The 28-year-old has signed a four-year contract that will keep him with Sporting KC through the 2023 MLS season.

“We are very excited to add Alan Pulido to our roster ahead of the new season,” manager Peter Vermes said in a club release.

“He is a winner, has a terrific work rate and embodies all of the attributes we value at our club. We also want to thank Chivas for being an incredibly professional partner and appreciate the relationship we have created with them.

“Alan is ready for this new challenge and looks forward to getting started with us on the field in January.”

Pulido moves to the United States after tying for the scoring lead in the recently completed Apertura, scoring 12 goals in 18 Liga MX appearances.

The native of Ciudad Victoria, Mexico has scored more than 100 goals for club and country in a professional career that has seen him represent multiple clubs in Mexico and Greece.

Pulido came up through the Tigres academy and graduated to the professional ranks before moving to Levadiakos and then Olympiacos in Greece.

The striker returned home to Mexico in 2016 when Chivas paid a club-record fee to land Pulido.

His time at Chivas saw him win a domestic title with the 2017 Clausura as well as a continental championship with the 2018 Concacaf Champions League.

At the international level, Pulido has scored five goals in 13 appearances for the Mexico national team, making his El Tri debut in 2014.

For Sporting KC, Pulido’s signing is a statement of intent after a 2019 season that saw its run of eight straight seasons making the postseason end.

Vermes promised that the club would spend like never before, telling the Kansas City Star that its owners were ready to make an “injection of capital.”

Pulido’s signing follows the additions of Croatian defender Roberto Puncec from HNK Rijeka and Khiry Shelton, who will return to the club from Bundesliga side Paderborn
