Elizabeth Olsen Got Media-Trained by Her “Notoriously Tight-Lipped” Sisters Mary-Kate and Ashley

There’s no doubt Elizabeth Olsen is forging her own career path with three movies and counting just this year alone. But when it comes to navigating the industry she turns to two people for advice: her older sisters Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.

The duo is incredibly private and selective when it comes to interviews with the media, so it’s no wonder the 31-year-old Elizabeth and James and The Row designers groomed their younger sister to do the same.

Once Olsen started making it big in the acting world (she most recently stars alongside Aubrey Plaza in Ingrid Goes West and Wind River, out this Friday), she reveals she started talking freely without much thought to the consequences.

“I was not caring what I was saying [in interviews] because I’d assumed no one would read it,” Olsen told Modern Luxury, in the magazine’s September issue.

That’s when Mary-Kate and Ashley sat their little sister down for a lesson on how to handle reporters.

“They’d say, ‘You know, even if you don’t think anyone’s going to read this article, someone might pull the quote later for [something else].’ It’s all part of how you hope someone interprets you, and how they frame who you are and the work you do,” she said. “They’re very tight-lipped—notoriously so.”

But now, after learning lessons from her sisters, Olsen is passing on words of wisdom herself.

“I still deal with so many anxieties of how I come across. I’ll go home at night, spinning with a guilt complex of, ‘Did I say something stupid to that person who I respect? Do they think I’m a freak?’ I don’t want to think like that anymore,” she told Modern Luxury.

And unlike some women, the now-28-year-old is actually looking forward to turning 30 in about a year and a half. “Your 30s sound like the best decade for a woman,” she said. “What’s so beautiful about being older and wiser is you are sitting heavier in your shoes with your feet on the ground. I can’t wait!”

And she’s already setting herself up well for the future. Olsen told the magazine she just purchased her first house, which she’s in the process of renovating. “[It] has been so much fun and stimulating creatively,” she said.

But what she’s really looking towards is motherhood. “I was also thinking, ‘There’s this small room upstairs, which would be good for a kid,’” she said. “I don’t know where things will lead, but I do think about it in that way: ‘I think I could raise kids here.’”

Pregnant Khloé Kardashian Bares Her Abs in Daenerys Targaryen Costume

Look out Hollywood, the Mother of Dragons is ready to conquer Los Angeles—and, no, it’s not Emilia Clarke! Khloé Kardashian dressed up as the actress’s Game of Thrones character for Halloween, and she makes for a very convincing Daenerys Targaryen.

In true Kardashian fashion, she went all out for the holiday. Not only did she wear a long blonde wig, but she also dared to bare her baby bump. Khloé paired skimpy silver armor with a high-waisted brown skirt that showed off a sliver of her growing stomach. Thigh-high furry boots and a fur shawl completed the costume.

Khloé wasn’t the only one dressed in her Westerosi best. The Keeping Up with the Kardashian star’s boyfriend Tristan Thompson went in GoT theme, too. He dressed as Dany’s now (sadly) deceased first husband, Khal Drogo. Guess they don’t think that Dany and Jon Snow will end up together!

The reality star took to her Instagram to share photos from the night, captioning one of her and Thompson kissing with a GoT-inspired quote. “Moon of my life,” she wrote.

The couple wore their ensembles to a pre-Halloween party last night, and took home best couples costume. We can see why!

We’re Tipping Our Hats to Rose Byrne’s Floral Maternity Style

Rose Byrne is pregnant and she’s making one thing clear: comfort takes priority.

Last week, the expectant 38-year-old actress closed out the dog days of summer in a white dress with a cute accompanying button-up. And on Tuesday, she hit the streets of N.Y.C. in another look that, pregnant or not, we’d also happily slip on.

For her outing, Byrne kept it simple in a floral and tropical sleeveless dress perfect for a walk in the park, day at the museum, visit to the doctor, or brunch with friends. She paired the piece with a rectangular red crossbody, sunglasses, and a white wide-brim hat.

She also seems to have been on the phone while out. Maybe she was catching up with longtime partner Bobby Cannavale?

In August, Byrne announced her pregnancy in Australia’s Jones Magazine. “I’m a little tired but feeling good,” she said, adding, “Everyone was very sweet on set today, and you always get a little bit more attention when you’re pregnant, which is fabulous.”

Don’t Adjust Your Screen: Solange Knowles Just Went Platinum Blonde

Well hello there, Solange Knowles!

Thanks to a bold new hairstyle, the songstress had us all doing a double take at New York Fashion Week on Tuesday. For an al fresco performance at Maryam Nassir Zadeh’s spring 2018 runway show at the East River Track, Knowles ditched her signature brown ‘fro in favor of long platinum blonde braids and twists, accented with funky, decorative beads. Don’t adjust the contrast on your computer screen: the surprise new color is easily the 31-year-old’s lightest to date.

The singer completed her edgy, boho look with a long-sleeve gray crop top, wide-leg black pants, and a pair of vintage cat eye sunnies. Meow.

Knowles quashed any notion that the new ‘do was just a one-day wonder when she took to Instagram with two photos of her hair in a blonde afro later that afternoon.

The Big Little Lies Cast and Author All Had the Same Things to Say About Season 2

Ever since Big Little Lies aired its explosive final chapter on HBO in April, viewers (and readers) around the globe have been buzzing with anticipation for a potential second season of the limited-run series.

Fans of the show aren’t the only ones eagerly awaiting a second act: The cast has repeatedly shared their enthusiasm for the idea. It’s all been speculative up to this point, but it seems plans for another season are becoming more concrete.

After Sunday night’s Emmys ceremony, the BLL cast, director Jean-Marc Vallée, and author of the original source material, Liane Moriarty, discussed the possibility of Season 2—and we must say, it sounds pretty promising.

Jason LaVeris/FilmMagic

Laura Dern, who won an Emmy for her performance in the series, fielded reporters’ questions of an extended run, ultimately admitting the future of the show is at Moriarty’s discretion.

“Season 2: If we were to do it again, and that was not the intention, I think all the actors would feel ecstatic because we love these characters,” she shared. “That’s up to Liane—what she would want for the story.”

Well, good news: Liane appears to be just as excited by the prospect as Dern and her fellow cast members.

“I’m thinking about it,” the Australian author said when asked if she’d contribute to a second season. “It’s a beautiful possibility.”

Vallée gave a similarly cryptic answer, telling reporters, “I’m just like the audience, and like these girls, and everyone else, right now, yes, it would be great. It would be great to reunite the team. Are we going to be able to do it? We’ll have to see.”

Leading lady Reese Witherspoon’s take? “You already know we’re liars,” she said, “I don’t think you should trust anything we say, but we’re thinking about it, we’re discussing it, but nothing definitive yet.”

Kendall Jenner Addresses Controversial Pepsi Ad for First Time: “I Feel Like My Life Is Over”

Nearly five months after Pepsi pulled their protest-themed commercial starring Kendall Jenner, the reality star is speaking out about the controversy.

In a trailer for the 14th season of Keeping Up with the Kardashians (above), Jenner is seen huddled on a bed with her sister Kim Kardashian West discussing the backlash. “It feels like my life is over,” says Jenner.

Luckily, Kardashian West—who described herself as the “ringleader” of the family during crisis in a recent Interview magazine story—is there to give it to her straight. “You made a mistake,” she says.

While we’ll have to wait for the full episode to air to hear more from Jenner, Kardashian West previously opened up about what went down during their conversation. “She totally understood at the end of the day and she felt really awful for it,” she told Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live. “She just wants to move on from it.”

The politically-charged ad was retracted by the brand after accusations of appropriating civil rights movements to sell soda. In the clip, Jenner played the part of a model who ditches a photo shoot to join a group of protesters in the street and calms the chaos by handing a police officer a can of Pepsi.

A source told People that Jenner was “in constant communication with her mom and sisters” after learning of the responses it triggered on social media. “Everyone is being very supportive and ready to give advice,” the source said at the time. “Kendall is young and certainly not used to being involved in such controversy.”

Jaime King on Banning Underweight Models: It’s Unfair to Say “If You’re a Size Zero You Can’t Work”

At New York Fashion Week on Saturday, actress Jaime King responded to the recent ban on size zero models by French fashion companies.

“I think it would be radically unfair to say if you’re a size zero, then you can’t work, just like it’s unfair to say that if you’re a size 16, you can’t work,” King, 32 told the New York Post.

Last week, French fashion companies Kering and LVMH, who own labels like Dior, Givenchy and Gucci, committed themselves to banning models below French size 34—which corresponds to a US size 0—according to Reuters.

“[When] I was diagnosed with endometriosis, I gained 40 pounds because my hormones were so crazy,” King continued. “And it was like, ‘Oh, [producers] want to offer you this role, but they want to know why you got fat.’ I realized being shamed for gaining weight or being too thin felt the same.”

“I’m naturally really thin, and sometimes it’s really hard for me to gain weight,” King added. “When people on Instagram say, ‘Go eat a hamburger,’ I’m like, ‘Wow, they’re body-shaming me for the way I look.’ ”

In 2015, France’s National Assembly passed a law that requires models working in the country to provide a medical certificate stating their overall health and  body mass index is appropriate.

Modeling agencies or fashion houses that do not follow the law face imprisonment and a hefty fine of 75,000 euros (approximately $81,000).

The law also regulates the use of Photoshop in commercial photographs. If an image has been digitally altered to make a model look thinner or larger, it must be labeled “retouched photograph.”

Selena Gomez Teams Up with the Sneaker Brand Her Boyfriend Loves

What do Selena Gomez, boyfriend The Weeknd, and Rihanna have in common? Aside from chart-topping hits and an innate ability to be cool AF, the trio all have major love for Puma.

On Monday, Puma introduced the 25-year-old singer and Coach favorite as the newest member of the brand’s family. “Fearless talent and [crown] of Instagram joins the family,” the brand wrote alongside the below ‘gram of the beauty dressed in velvety separates we’d be down to wear ASAP.

Additionally, Gomez herself shared a celebratory shot modeling a black sports bra with high-waist leggings, gold Jennifer Fisher hoops, and retro-like sunglasses.

A behind-the-scenes video from her shoot finds the star excited to be the face of the brand’s newest campaign. “I’m in New York right now—I’m actually, I’m semi/kind of living here right now. Doing my first Puma shoot ever, kind of rocking it now. This is actually so comfortable, but now we’re literally going to the next shoot and it’s gonna be so much fun,” she says, referring to a black velvet track jacket she’s sporting.

For her new long-term partnership, Gomez models Puma’s Phenom sneaker, though she’s also on board to not only pose for future campaigns we know we’ll love, but also design pieces for the brand. Additionally, Puma will support causes that Gomez keeps at the top of her mind.

Guy Aroch

“Being a part of the Puma family is very exciting for me,” she said in a statement. “Puma has changed the game when it comes to the mash-up of athletic wear and fashion. It’s amazing to see this influence on style and culture and I’m excited to be a part of it. I am hoping that we can create something special together. We already have some really cool projects in the works.”

If the Selena Grace handbag she designed for Coach is any indicator, these are sure to be must-haves as well.

In a "World of Plenty," G7 Must Fight Famine

World leaders must step up and take action in fighting famine to prevent further catastrophic levels of hunger and deaths, said Oxfam.

Ahead of the 43rd G7 summit, Oxfam urged world leaders to urgently address the issue of famine, currently affecting four countries at unprecedented levels.

“Political failure has led to these crises – political leadership is needed to resolve them…the world’s most powerful leaders must now act to prevent a catastrophe happening on their watch,” said Oxfam’s Executive Director Winnie Byanyima.

“If G7 leaders were to travel to any of these four countries, they would see for themselves how life is becoming impossible for so many people: many are already dying in pain, from disease and extreme hunger,” she continued.

In northeast Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan, and Yemen, approximately 30 million people are severely food insecure. Of this figure, 10 million face emergency and famine conditions, more than the population of G7 member United Kingdom’s capital of London.

After descending into conflict over three years ago, famine has now been declared in two South Sudan counties and a third county is at risk if food aid is not provided.

In Somalia, conflict alongside prolonged drought – most likely exacerbated by climate change – has left almost 7 million in need of humanitarian assistance. Drought has also contributed to cholera outbreaks and displacement.

Byanyima pointed to the hypocrisy in a “world of plenty” experiencing four famines.

These widespread crises are not confined to the four countries’ borders.

According to the UN Refugee Agency, almost 2 million South Sudanese have fled to neighboring countries, including Uganda, Ethiopia, and Kenya, making it the world’s fastest growing refugee crisis. Due to the influx of South Sudanese refugees, the Bidi Bidi refugee camp in Uganda is now the largest in the world, placing a strain on local services.

Escaping hunger and conflict, Nigerians have sought refuge in the Lake Chad region which shares its borders with Cameroon, Chad, and Niger only to once again face high levels of food insecurity and disease outbreaks.

Among the guest invitees to the G7 meeting are the affected nations, including the governments of Ethiopia, Kenya, and Nigeria.

Oxfam called on the G7 countries to provide its fair share of funding. So far, they have provided 1.7 billion dollars, just under 60 percent of their fair share. Meanwhile, only 30 percent of a 6.3-billion-dollar UN appeal for all four countries has been funded. If each G7 country contributed its fair share, almost half of the appeal would be funded, Oxfam estimates.

In 2015, the G7 committed to lift 500 million people out of hunger and malnutrition. Oxfam noted that they should thus uphold their commitments and focus on crisis prevention.

However, some of the G7 nations’ actions do not bode well for accelerated action on famine.

For instance, the U.S. government has proposed significant cuts to foreign assistance, including a 30 percent decrease in funding for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). The proposal also includes the elimination of Title II For Peace, a major USAID food aid program, which would mean the loss of over 1.7 billion dollars of food assistance.

Former US Foreign Disaster Assistance chief Jeremy Konyndyk noted that the cuts are “catastrophic.” “So bad I fear I’m misreading it,” he added.

International Rescue Committee’s (IRC) President David Miliband highlighted the importance of continuing U.S. foreign assistance in order to alleviate humanitarian suffering abroad and protect the interests and security of the U.S. and its allies.

“Global threats like Ebola and ISIS grow out of poverty, instability, and bad governance. Working to counteract these with a forward-leaning foreign aid policy doesn’t just mean saving lives today, but sparing the US and its allies around the world the much more difficult, expensive work of combating them tomorrow,” he stated.

President Trump also called for the elimination of the U.S. African Development Foundation which provides grants to underserved communities in Sub-Saharan Africa, and has suggested cutting funds to climate change programs such as the UN’s Green Climate Fund which aims to help vulnerable developing nations combat climate change.

Meanwhile, UK’s Prime Minister Theresa May has already abolished its climate change department.

In addition to scaling up humanitarian funding, G7 nations must commit to fund longer-term solutions that build resilience and improve food security to avoid large-scale disasters, Oxfam stated. This includes action on climate change, “no excuses,” said Oxfam.

President Trump is expected to announce whether the U.S. will remain in the Paris climate agreement after the G7 summit.

“History shows that when donors fail to act on early warnings of potential famine, the consequence can be a large-scale, devastating loss of life….now clear warnings have again been issued,” Oxfam stated.

“The international community have the power to end such failures—if they choose to—by marshaling international logistics and a humanitarian response network to work sustainably with existing local systems to prevent famine and address conflict, governance, and climate change drivers,” Oxfam concluded.

The G7 summit is hosted by Sicily, Italy and will be held from 26-27 May.
