Floor damage made Mexico win a “struggle” for Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton admitted that he’d struggled to stay in the lead in the Mexican Grand Prix, which resulted in his 83rd career victory in Formula 1.

The Mercedes driver started from third place on the grid and initially seemed to get a tow down the straight from Charles Leclerc, only to get pinched onto the grass by Sebastian Vettel.

Struggling to recover, Hamilton then made contact with Max Verstappen through the first sequence of corners which resulted in both cars running off the track. While both were able to continue, Hamilton sustained considerable damage to the floor of the W10 in the process.

  • Hamilton wins in Mexico but has to wait for title

“We had quite a bit of a damage on the car so the race was quite a bit of a struggle,” Hamilton said after the finish.

“I had a crazy first couple of corners. Seb put me on the grass at the start and then Max hit me in the back and damaged my car and I was like how am I going to make this happen?!'”

“I don’t think it was intentional or anything like that,” he said of the collision. “It’s very likely you’re going to come together with Max if you don’t give him extra space, so most of the time you do.”

“Nonetheless I managed to keep the car together in a straight line, fortunately.”

After dropping two places it looked like a victory was off the agenda for Hamilton. But the team’s decision to run a long second second stint on the hard compound turned Hamilton’s fortunes around.

“I just to keep my head down. It seemed like a long second stint,” he said. “Just to hold up the Ferraris was not so easy at the end.

“We kind of knew we might be on the back foot, which we generally were, but we just kept our heads down,” he explained.

“We were facing a lot of question marks within ourselves, doubts and demons and all these different things, so it’s quite emotional this roller coaster ride.

“If you look at last year we lost by 80s or something, we struggled with our tyres, and we thought that this would potentially be the case this weekend.

“I am so grateful for today,” he said. “This is a race I’ve wanted to win for some time and it’s always been a little bit tricky for us.

“Today was a surprise, we’ve really struggled here for quite some time,” he added. “I’m incredibly humbled by today’s opportunity, the car holding together as it did, and the team executing the best strategy.”

With his team mate Valtteri Bottas crossing the line in third place, Hamilton does not yet have a big enough points lead in the drivers championship to put the title beyond doubt, meaning the battle goes on to Austin.

But Hamilton insisted that he wasn’t disappointed to close it out this weekend.

“I don’t mind, I love racing and I just take it one race at a time, honestly,” he said. “I’m so appreciative, also all the guys back in the factory – it’s been an incredible year.

“They’re not giving up, pushing on to the next couple of races and the following year. I couldn’t have done it without them and I hope they feel as proud of me as I do them and what we’ve done as a team.”

Amid Fears About The Future Of Special Status, Nagaland BJP Chief Says Any Move To Scrap Article 371(A) Will Be Opposed

Ever since Monday when the government announced the withdrawal of special status to Jammu and Kashmir, there have been a lot of rumors about what is next, especially in the country’s northeast where the states also have special status under Article 371.

Even though the government has not hinted at removing Article 371, speculations are at rift about the future of it.

Under Article 371, Nagaland (371A), Assam (371B), Manipur (371C), Mizoram (371G) and Arunachal Pradesh (371H) enjoy some special status and like in Jammu and Kashmir, it is a touchy matter.

This is particularly true in Nagaland where there is a long-running separatist movement. Now amid the apprehensions, Nagaland BJP chief Temjen Imna Along Longkumer has assured that if such attempts are made he will be standing united and protest the move strongly as it is about protecting the unique Naga history.

Palmer surprised by McLaren progress

Jolyon Palmer confesses he is surprised by the progress McLaren has achieved over the winter, as he thought Renault could stay ahead of the British team in Melbourne.

Making his F1 debut at this weekend’s Australian Grand Prix, Palmer has always kept expectations in check following the French manufacturer’s late takeover of Lotus. But with Enstone comfortably beating McLaren in 2015, the Briton hoped Renault had maintained some sort of edge over the Woking outfit in the midfield.

Palmer and team-mate Kevin Magnussen eventually qualified 14th and 15th respectively, behind Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button.

“I wish they [McLaren] were closer,” said Palmer, who finished 1.3s off the slower McLaren. “They’ve actually found a lot of performance compared to what we thought.

“I was thinking we might be ahead of them but they’ve obviously been holding something back a bit in testing. Maybe we can find a little bit in the race. We’re not a million miles off them.”

Asked about his expectations for his maiden grand prix start, Palmer admits finishing in the top-10 might be too ambitious a goal though Melbourne’s season opener has thrown up its fair share of wild events over the past 20 years.

“It’s the first race of the season, anything can happen. We’ve got to be there at the end. I’m sure there are going to be reliability issues. The radio ban hasn’t played a big part but I’m sure in the race we’re going to have quite a busy time.

“There’s going to be a lot of work to do. Just get to the end. It would be great to nick a point or two, but pace-wise we’re not quite there so it’s going to take something in front.”

Nasr bemoans loss of Smith at Sauber

Felipe Nasr says Mark Smith’s departure as Sauber technical director is “a shame” for the team as there is still so much room for improvement.

Smith was appointed technical director only last summer, but Sauber confirmed the former Red Bull, Force India and Caterham man had left the team “for family reasons” ahead of the start of the season. Nasr says Smith’s exit comes as a blow with this year’s car having only just been launched.

“It’s a shame because I think Mark was doing a very good job in the team since he came in, leading the project with the C35,” Nasr said. “I admired his work. He was a great addition to the team and it was a shame to see him leaving that early because there is still room for improvement in the development of the car and he was the person to be leading that.

“I’m sure the team is looking for someone else to replace him as soon as they can.”

And Nasr admits it is likely to have an impact on the way Sauber develops its car this season, even if he feels Smith has left the team on the right path.

“I think we know most of it, this direction, has been done. We have planned out what the things we should do are, but it is also true to say that when you have the car running you have a better reading of what has to be implemented, which area has to have priority. Someone in his position was able to see that … [Technical leadership] is a must for any team.”

DRS failure held back Gutierrez

Esteban Gutierrez finally completed a race distance in the Chinese Grand Prix but his progress was hampered by a DRS failure.

Having had a year on the sidelines at Ferrari, Gutierrez joined Haas this season but suffered from reliability problems in the second pre-season test and throughout the first two races. Having failed to reach the chequered flag in either Australia or Bahrain, Gutierrez completed just six laps during Friday practice in China but managed to finish 14th in the race.

After such little practice running, Gutierrez praised Haas for the car it gave him and says there are plenty of positives to take out of the race even though a DRS failure just before the halfway point made overtaking extremely difficult.

“It’s fantastic, it’s quite a nice feeling to do a full race,” Gutierrez said. “Actually I was quite happy with the balance, I was obviously managing everything, the front tyres were very critical and very sensitive and everything: procedures, tyre management, car balance was pretty good considering we didn’t have any time to set up the car or to get any reference.

“It was a big risk to make certain decisions, we took some a bit blind but it seems that it was pretty spot on. Yeah in general I lost the DRS and we were a bit limited in terms of our strategy because we had quite an aggressive strategy and trying to overtake Nico Hulkenberg, I was obviously not able to do it without DRS. They were pretty strong on the straights and then I fell behind Nico Rosberg.”

Despite his DRS deficit, Gutierrez takes heart from the fact the problem occurred in a race where he was unlikely to score.

“I don’t think we had the car to finish in the points as the race went from starting from where we started but I think the race was pretty solid and considering all of the cars finished, I don’t remember the last race when every car finished. Yeah it was a solid race and we will build up from this to the next events.”

Grosjean confident of afternoon recovery for Haas

Romain Grosjean expects to make up for lost time on Thursday afternoon after a disjointed morning session for Haas.

With Esteban Gutierrez having been hit by reliability issues throughout the opening two days of the second test, Grosjean took over on the penultimate day and was able to complete 59 laps. However, he explained Haas had been targeting much more mileage than that before his session ended in the gravel late on.

“We had some issues early in the morning – I don’t know exactly what they were – and then we went for a long stint because we want to get mileage,” Grosjean said. “We did manage to go quite long on the tyres and on the car which was good, so I think much more long runs this afternoon.

“We are trying to investigate [going off]. I locked the front wheel and went straight. Hopefully we stopped before the wall so a bit of cleaning unfortunately and try to understand exactly what happened.

“I removed as many stones as I could! Anyway we have planned to remove the floor to check everything and hopefully we are still targeting 2pm.”

However, Grosjean admits he is unlikely to get to push the new Haas in qualifying trim before Saturday in Australia.

“It certainly doesn’t help when you’ve got eight days [of testing] and you miss two, but we are trying to catch back up. We are a new team so there’s a lot to learn, but generally everyone is working well. There are a few areas where we can massively improve but the rest is up there.

“I think more long runs [are needed] to see which parts are the not strong runs. A qualifying run I think would be good but that’s only going to come in FP3 in Melbourne.”

Ferrari drivers admit race pace needs improvement

Sebastian Vettel says Ferrari will be looking to improve its pace in race trim ahead of Sunday’s US Grand Prix, the Scuderia’s cars not quite matching their Mercedes counterparts during Friday’s long runs.

Vettel and team and Charles Leclerc concluded yesterday afternoon’s free practice respectively P4 and P2, with the red cars delivering good speed relative to their rivals over a single lap.

But Vettel knows that performance won’t buy Ferrari a race win on Sunday.

Drivers unimpressed with ‘weird’ 2020-spec tyres

“The car was good to start with, which is positive, but then we tried some things that did not seem to work so well,” said the four-time world champion.

“But we understand what we need to do so, hopefully we can improve in terms of our one lap pace.

“For one lap we should be there, thereabouts… Race trim we have a little bit of homework to do.

“We know our strengths and weaknesses and in quali trim, we can mask the weaknesses a bit, whereas that is harder for us to do in race configuration.

“All the same, I’m quite confident we can improve the car. We will focus on that and see what we can achieve.”

©Ferrari

Leclerc, who will be targeting his eighth pole position of 2019, echoed his teammate’s comments.

“I think [it was] a positive day, especially for quali pace I think we were strong,” said the Monegasque.

“In FP1 I couldn’t show the real potential, the lap time was deleted and a few things like this, and we had a problem, but overall we had a positive day.

“We still have some work to do to improve our race pace and our competitors have turned out to be quite strong in that department today, so we will see where we stand tomorrow and take it from there.”
