Katy Perry Releases the Surprise Rio Olympics Anthem “Rise”

Surprise! Katy Perry is back with an inspiring new anthem just in time for the 2016 Rio Olympics. The single, titled “Rise,” was composed and recorded by Perry and will be used by NBC leading up to and throughout its coverage of the upcoming Olympic games—which means we’ll be hearing plenty of it in the coming weeks and months.

“This is a song that’s been brewing inside me for years, that has finally come to the surface. I was inspired to finish it now, rather than save it for my next album, because now more than ever, there is a need for our world to unite,” Perry said in a statement.

“I know that together we can rise above the fear—in our country, and around the world. I can’t think of a better example than the Olympic athletes, as they gather in Rio with their strength and fearlessness, to remind us how we ALL can come together, with the resolve to be the best we can be,” she went on to say. “I hope this song can inspire us to heal, unite, and rise together. I am honored that NBC Olympics has chosen to use it as an anthem before and during the Rio Games.”

According to the network, “Rise” will be featured in promotional spots across NBCUniversal’s broadcast, cable, digital, social, and radio platforms as well as during its primetime coverage of the Opening Ceremony on Friday, Aug. 5.

“We are thrilled to have Katy contribute such a powerful and inspiring song to our coverage of the Rio Games,” Jim Bell, executive producer of NBC Olympics added to the statement. “Her music and message speak directly to the spirit of the Olympics and its athletes.”

“Through the blood, sweat (lots of it), and tears, we keep rising,” Perry wrote on Instagram. “Finally, my new video for #RISE.”

In the video (above) Perry fights with a parachute strapped to her back and struggles to untangle herself and take off in a variety of unforgiving landscapes. From an abandoned airplane hanger to a rocky desert where she finds herself hanging off a cliff, and eventually into a crystal-blue lake she battles to get airborne. And then after one final sprint towards a cliff, she finds herself rising into the air.

“Now more than ever there is a need for our world to unite,” Perry said when she first unveiled the new anthem. “I know that together, we can rise above the fear in our country around the world, and I can’t think of a better example coming up than the Olympic athletes as they gather together in Rio with their strength and fearlessness to remind us how we all can come together with the resolve to be the best that we can be.”

Gomez and Liverpool team-mate out of England game

Jordan Henderson and Joe Gomez are to miss England’s final UEFA EURO 2020 qualifier in Kosovo on Sunday due to illness and injury respectively.

Henderson missed the 7-0 home win over Montenegro after arriving in the England camp with a viral infection and has not fully recovered.

Gomez suffered a knock to the knee in training on Friday and has not recovered sufficiently enough to travel.

The PA news agency understands Gomez was hurt when clashing knees in an accidental collision with Kieran Trippier.

Liverpool team-mates Henderson and Gomez have returned to their club. There will be no additions to the England squad to travel to Pristina.

Gomez played as a substitute during the win over Montenegro but was booed by sections of the Wembley crowd following his training ground spat with Raheem Sterling.

The Manchester City forward was dropped from the Montenegro game as punishment but manager Gareth Southgate stressed he would start the game in Kosovo.

Redknapp shocked at Spurs start; makes Poch job prediction

Harry Redknapp says he is shocked at Tottenham’s poor start to the new season but doesn’t think Mauricio Pochettino’s job is on the line.

The 1-1 draw with Sheffield United last time out left Spurs 14th in the Premier League, 11 points off the Champions League places and without a league win in five attempts.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, Redknapp said that his prediction for Tottenham to push for the league title now looks like it could be wrong already.

It’s strange, you have spells when things don’t go your way but I really thought they would push Liverpool and Manchester City close for the title this season,” the pundit said.

“But at the moment they are looking like they are going to struggle to even make the top four.

“It would be a massive blow if they didn’t make the Champions League, the money that has been invested in the training ground and the stadium, anything less than Champions League qualification would be a poor season.”

Spurs’ next game sees them travel to West Ham with recent reports suggesting that defeat there could have a serious impact on boss Pochettino’s future.

Redknapp rejected such claims, saying that he can’t see chairman Daniel Levy wielding the axe just yet if things don’t improve.

“West Ham will be a difficult game, but I can’t see his job being on the line,” he added. “I’m a big fan of Pochettino – he’s a great manager and personality, he knows the game.

“But with that squad he’s got to win something, they have to get some silver on the sideboard somewhere. They won’t win the league and I don’t think they are good enough to win the Champions League [this season].

“They’re out the League Cup so will have to look to win the FA Cup, which is a possibility as they are good side.”

Spurs also return to Champions League action following the international break, their next clash seeing them face Olympiacos in North London on November 26.

Chelsea ‘bid £43m for right-back’ who could now leave on free

Chelsea made a huge offer for Napoli right-back Elseid Hysaj back in 2018 and now the Serie A club could be about to lose him for free, according to his agent.

The Albania full-back now looks all set to run down his contract in Naples and leave on a free transfer next summer – a fact which will infuriate chief Aurelio De Laurentiis.

The player’s agent has almost touted around Hysaj, reminding clubs that the 25-year-old will be up for grabs and free to speak to foreign clubs in January.

Agent Mario Giuffredi has revealed that things could have been different for Napoli after they rejected a €50m (£43m) bid from Chelsea in the summer of 2018.

Maurizio Sarri left Napoli for Chelsea that summer and it’s understood the Italian wanted to bring Hysaj with him to Stamford Bridge, as well as Jorginho.

Giuffredi told Radio Punto Nuovo: “Whatever happens with him, the outcome will be great.

“If we leave, we’ll do what we had to do in the summer. If we don’t leave, Napoli will lose the player on a free transfer, but it’ll always work out for us.

“A year-and-a-half ago, Napoli could’ve taken €50million (£43m) from Chelsea.

“If Hysaj stays at Napoli, the Neapolitan club risks losing the player for nothing.”

Whether Frank Lampard will be interested in the player remains to be seen, as he currently has Cesar Azpilicueta and starlet Reece James battling for that position.

Poch ‘fuming’ over Spurs’ failure to land former Liverpool man

Mauricio Pochettino was left ‘fuming’ in the summer after Tottenham failed to bring in Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona, according to reports.

Coutinho joined Bayern Munich on a season-long loan this summer after his move from Liverpool to Barcelona failed to lift off.

The Brazilian won two La Liga titles and a Copa del Rey but struggled to settle or establish himself during 18 months in Spain.

And The Sun claims that Spurs boss Pochettino wanted to sign Coutinho and their failure to sign him was one of his ‘many beefs’ with the club over the summer.

The Argentinean boss knows Coutinho well having coached him during their time together at Espanyol, when the Brazilian was on loan from Inter Milan.

Coutinho was linked with Tottenham in the last transfer window and The Sun confirmed that Pochettino ‘wanted to sign him again this summer’.

Pochettino was keen for Spurs to spend in the summer so he could start reshaping his squad with a number of current players eyeing up an exit after their Champions League final appearance last term.

And Pochettino is ‘convinced the rebuild would already be well under way’ if the club had bagged Coutinho in the summer window.

Tottenham are currently 14th in the Premier League table after a terrible start to the new season, finding themselves 11 points off the top four and 20 points off leaders Liverpool.

“The next worse thing was just being completely exhausted every day around 2 p.m.,” she wrote in her PEOPLE blog post. “I couldn’t do anything. It felt like I was coming down with the flu every day at this time. This was tough physically but also emotionally, as I have always been used to a certain level of productivity. I felt like I’d lost control of my body.”

Teams kicked off pre-season testing under a clear blue sky but with crisp and cold temperatures, with the Circuit de Catalunya basking in just 6 degrees Celsius.

Cars took to the track sporting their usual array of testing sensors and ‘cheese graters’ as the start of the day was devoted to collecting data collecting.

Ferrari’s SF90 in particular – with Sebastian Vettel behind the wheel – was fitted out with an impressive amount of evaluation equipment.

Shortly into the session, Kimi Raikkonen brought out the first red flag of the day when the Iceman beached his Alfa Romeo in the gravel at Turn 5, fortunately with no damage to his car which was quickly put on a flatbed and brought back to its garage.

Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas clocked in some early times in the mid 1.24 range, but Vettel quickly overhauled the Finn, the Ferrari driver eventually shaving four seconds off that time.

Red Bull enjoyed a quiet start to 2019, the Honda-powered Rb15 with max Verstappen onboard only undertaking installation laps 90 minutes into the session.

Almost two hours in, a second red flag was brought out courtesy of Romain Grosjean’s Haas stopping just before the chicane as a result of a fuel pressure issue.

F1 is up and running – the first pictures from Barcelona!

Up front, Vettel continued to rake in the laps and improve his speed, the German descending into the 1.18s, followed by an impressive Sergio Perez at the wheel of Racing Point’s RP19, and Bottas, with all drivers setting their times on Pirelli’s soft C2 tyre.

Vettel was the first man to put 50 laps under his belt. Relentless, his tally reached 72 when the session ended for lunch.

Mercedes, Red Bull, Renault and McLaren also topped 50 laps in the opening four hours of pre-season testing.
