Man Utd striker Rashford: My career 'can only get better' with age

The Red Devils forward believes he will keep improving as a player until he hits his peak in a few years’ time

Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford has warned defenders that he is nowhere near his best football despite a hot streak of form recently.

The 22-year-old scored in both of England’s Euro 2022 qualifiers during the international break to make it nine goals in his last 10 games for club and country.

Rashford revealed he is enjoying the good times in front of goal but is adamant there is plenty more to come in his career as he gets older.

“I just use these experiences now in my favour to better me in the future, because I know when I’m 25, 26, 27, they’re the years when I’m going to be playing my best football,” Rashford told ESPN FC.

“I’m just looking ahead to those times really and improving as much as I can until then.”

After scoring a brace on the opening day of the season against Chelsea, Rashford only managed one goal in his next seven Premier League matches – a penalty in the 1-0 victory against Leicester City in September.

But the Red Devils youth product stuck out the barren run in front of goal and has three in his last four league games, while also adding a brace in the Carabao Cup and a strike in the Europa League.

Rashford feels as if his best football is in the years ahead of him and his career is going to reach greater heights than he currently is at.

“In reality, my peak is not going to be for another four or five years,” he said. “As good as things are now, they can only get better.”

Rashford will have a chance to continue his goal-scoring exploits when Manchester United visit Sheffield United at Bramall Lane in the Premier League on Sunday.

The promoted side are currently in fifth position on the league table – one point ahead of the seventh-placed Red Devils – and have only conceded nine goals this season to have the second-best defence in the division.

United have only given up 12 goals themselves but have struggled to score with their 16 league strikes far behind top four sides Liverpool (28), Leicester City (29), Chelsea (27) and Manchester City (35).

Triple-header in 2018 avoids World Cup clash

Formula 1’s 2018 provisional 21-race calendar which was released on Monday raised a few eyebrows when it revealed a three-race stint over consecutive weekends.

It has now come to light that the French, Austrian and British Grands Prix scheduled on June 24, July 1 and 8 have been compressed in order to avoid a clash with the World Cup final in Russia, F1 CEO Chase Carey justified on Tuesday.

“Every year there is always a unique thing we’re playing around and next year it has got this unique event, the World Cup final,” Carey said at an FIA Sport Conference in Geneva.

“So part of the schedule of having three (races) in a row was because we did not think it was ideal for a promoter to have an event (go) head-to-head with the World Cup final.”

  • F1 will enjoy a triple-header in 2018!

Carey said that the specifics of the 2018 schedule had been discussed with promoters and teams before the calendar was finalized.

“We made sure with our partners that it was manageable,” he added. “I think everybody thought that was manageable and within that schedule (we) did preserve the four-week break in August.”

While both China and Singapore are subject to confirmation with the commercial rights holder, Carey played down any concerns associated with the two Asian venues.

“It’s just the reality of having agreements that have come up,” added the American executive.

“We’re negotiating new agreements, we’re having good, constructive discussions, and expect to get there.

“We don’t expect it to be 19, we expect it to be 21. We wouldn’t have put it out if we didn’t expect it to be 21, but the reality is we don’t have a completed agreement.”

Magnussen says Haas healthier, happier team to work for

Kevin Magnussen says that the smaller, newer team of Haas is a much better and healthier place to be.

The 24-year-old Danish driver has previously driven for McLaren and Renault, which are both much larger and more long-established outfits.

“It’s a much healthier environment for a driver at Haas,” Magnussen said this week. “At least that is my experience, than my previous experiences where I was in big teams – big companies in fact – that were struggling in the sport.

“When you’re in a place that is struggling, the pressure is huge on a driver. I came in with very little experience, brand new in McLaren, which is a very big team,” he recalled. “The pressure was immense.”

Magnussen took over from Sergio Perez – himself a short-lived replacement for Lewis Hamilton – at McLaren in 2014. Although he finished in second place in his race début in Melbourne, he failed to finish on the podium again all season.

After McLaren signed Fernando Alonso, Magnussen reluctantly took a test and development role in 2015. When Alonso suffered a concussion in testing, Magnussen replaced him for the season opener. However by the end of the year relations with the team had grown frosty. He was let go by then-team CEO Ron Dennis in an email.

Magnussen was hired to race for Renault in 2016, but his best result was seventh place at Sochi. He left the team at the end of the year amid an acrimonious exchange of words in the media. He subsequently joined Haas, where he has finished twice in the points in seven races to date.

“I feel this is a lot less pressure here, but very, very high motivation,” said Magnussen of his current team. “It’s a much happier place to be.

“In Formula 1, there can be this kind of pressure where someone has to be blamed and the driver is easy to blame,” he explained. “Sometimes we are to blame, but not always, and it can be tough in certain situations.

“I would like to be under more pressure but only if it was because I was fighting for pole or wins,” he added.

One thing that is certainly making a difference for Magnussen is not having to worry about where he will be next season. He has a multi-year contract with the American squad, allowing him to focus on long-term development.

“It’s nice not having to talk about negative subjects like not being chosen for next year,” he said. “I can go into races and enjoy and do what I do best – I’m in a very good place.”

Porsche quits LMP1 in the WEC – heads to Formula E!

Porsche has announced that it will be quitting its LMP1 World Endurance Championship programme at the end of this year to enter Formula E in 2019!

The Weissach marque is the second manufacturer to announce its entry into the burgeoning all-electric single-seater series this week, after Mercedes’ decision to depart DTM and commit to Formula E.

“Entering Formula E and achieving success in this category are the logical outcomes of our Mission E road car programme,” said Porsche board member Michael Steiner.

“The growing freedom for in-house technology developments makes Formula E attractive to us.

“For us, Formula E is the ultimate competitive environment for driving forward the development of high performance vehicles in areas such as environmental friendliness, efficiency and sustainability.”

Porsche decision to pull out of endurance racing follows fellow brand Audi’s likewise decision to leave LMP1 to strengthen its presence in Formula E as it takes over the Abt Schaeffler squad which competes in the series.

“Building up the Le Mans team from scratch was a huge challenge,” said Porsche vice-president of LMP1 Fritz Enzinger.

“Over the years, we have developed an incredibly successful and professional team.

“This will be our basis going forward. I am certain that we will maintain our high level in Formula E. Confidence is high, and we are excited to get started.”
