F1 at maximum capacity with 21 races – Brawn

Ross Brawn, F1’s new sporting director, believes a 21-race calendar is the maximum number of events that Formula 1 can reasonably support.

The Formula One Group CEO Chase Carey has suggested that the sport’s schedule could be boosted to 25 races, or even more, but Brawn believes the calendar should not be inflated.

“The priority is the quality of the events,” Brawn told the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.

“North America is important but so is Asia and Europe.  How many races should we have?

“We must not inflate the calendar, 20-21 is the maximum. France will be back next year and perhaps Germany as well. And Monza is very important,” Brawn added.

  • Brawn still looking at budget cap option

But the biggest task awaiting the former Ferrari and Mercedes engineer is defining the sport’s future engine platform which will come into effect after 2020.

“We are thinking about the evolution of the hybrid engine,” Brawn said.

In order to retain a link with road car relevance, F1 could indeed carry on with its current hybrid approach, although fine tuning the technology to make the engines louder and perhaps also less expensive.

Furthermore, among several options under consideration to spice u the competition is the eventuality of opening up F1’s tyre supply contract to another manufacturer, like in the golden days of the great battles between Michelin and Goodyear.

“Competition is useful, but it’s expensive,” Brawn admitted.

“And Pirelli has done a great job — it’s too easy to criticise them. That said, we will analyse which tyres will be most suitable for the F1 we have in mind.”

'What an asshole!' – Draxler reveals the Schalke abuse that shaped his career

Even as a teenager, the Paris Saint-Germain attacker was not spared any hard truths while breaking through in the Bundesliga

Julian Draxler is a man used to criticism.

From a demanding father to his own drive to succeed, the Germany international has often been forced to face less than kind assessments of his performances face on.

As an emerging talent at Bundesliga side Schalke in 2011, the abuse inevitably came thick and fast for Draxler as he looked to establish himself in a side then boasting Real Madrid legend Raul.

Now at Paris Saint-Germain, where criticism is also never too far away, Draxler admits the slack he copped at Schalke was difficult to take as a teenager, but something that has enabled to him to take on board feedback more positively since.

“Schalke was not an employer for me like any other,” Draxler told Goal and DAZN.

“There were many eyes on me. When we lost, I did not just hear from the fans that I was sh*t, but from my neighbours, my family, and my family’s friends.

“For example, I was at my uncle’s birthday. At the party was someone, who attends every Schalke game, suddenly telling me what an asshole I am.

“That’s just the way people speak in the Ruhr area. Since you do not mince words. At the moment, people do not care if you are only 19 years old and still in the development phase.

“At the same time, people have a very good sense of whether you are really 100 per cent present on the course or whether you have a fuss in your head.

“Initially, as a teenager, you tend to take on a defensive posture and you’re thinking, ‘What are you trying to tell me? I already know how things work’. But in retrospect, you realise that people were mostly right.”

While Draxler struggled to escape criticism, he did make a positive early impression at Schalke, scoring an extra-time winner as a 17-year-old against Nurnberg in the DFB-Pokal.

Looking back, it is a moment he believes has had a ripple effect on his entire career.

“That was Hollywood,” he said. “Three days ago I had given my debut as a starter in Hannover. It was not a very special game, I did not play well, but it was pretty cool because we won 1-0 and it was my first win with Schalke. And then Nurnberg. After that, nothing was the same in my life as before.

“I have thousands of memories about it. You will never forget such an experience. Today, when I look at the interview I gave after the match, I hardly recognise myself.

“At that moment I did not know where to go with me and tried to be professional. But I was 17, I would have liked to hug the cameraman.

“The next day I was supposed to go to school, and I said, ‘I’m not going to school.’  The goal changed everything.”

‘Man Utd need five or six signings’ – Neville sees Pogba-less midfield as biggest problem

The former Red Devils defender believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs to bolster his ranks across the field in upcoming transfer windows

Manchester United are still in need of “five or six signings”, says Gary Neville, with a Paul Pogba-less midfield proving to be a real “problem” for the Red Devils at the moment.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made just three additions to his ranks over the summer, with Daniel James, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire snapped up.

They are considered to be useful recruits for the present and future, but a number of experienced stars departed Old Trafford during the last window.

Many have not been replaced, with United forced to put trust in academy graduates such as Scott McTominay and Andreas Pereira.

They have fared admirably at times, but the Red Devils still find themselves short in important areas of the field.

Neville believes strengthening is required from back to front, with goalkeeper the only area which is well covered by David de Gea and Sergio Romero.

Big money will need to be invested plugging the other gaps, with injuries – such as that being endured by World Cup winner Pogba – highlighting the need for further change.

“The midfield’s just a problem for United full stop, let’s be clear about it,” United legend Neville told Sky Sports.

“Even with Scott McTominay in it’s a problem. They haven’t strengthened in that area, obviously Pogba’s injured.

“It’s a problem for them and it’s just not good enough, the midfield just doesn’t have good enough quality.

“They need a striker, they need two midfield players, they need a left-back – they need five or six signings.

“They can’t do that until January and obviously the summer but the midfield will not go away as a problem for Manchester United just because of an injury.

“It’s a problem full stop – it needs strengthening.”

Solskjaer has previously stated that he expects to be in a position to bolster his ranks during the January transfer window.

He has started to backtrack, though, with the Norwegian having revealed that loan deals may represent the height of United’s ambition during a period in which value for money is notoriously difficult to find.

Solskjaer told reporters when quizzed on a possible winter budget: “It’s not about X amount of money.

“[Buying players] is about who we think is going to be good for the club in the long term, not just for three or four months.

“[Are those people available?] Probably not, because that’s the thing in January – not many clubs will sell players they want to keep in January.

“Maybe one or two could be a loan deal, but that’s not a money thing, that’s to help the team. But we’re getting players back. We’re looking at what can be available for us.”

How to fix Juventus in FM 2020: Get the real names for clubs and tournaments in Football Manager

How can you change Juventus’s name in FM2020 and fix the licensing issues for competitions like the Champions League and Europa League?

Due to Konami acquiring the full rights to Juventus for eFootball Pro Evoution Soccer 2020, no other computer game can use the Serie A club’s name, logo or jersey for 2019-20.

As a result, Juventus are known as Piemonte Calcio in FIFA 20  and have been called Zebre in Football Manager 2020. Zebre is the Italian word for “zebra” and reflects their traditional striped black and white kit – however, the default kit for the club in FM2020 actually is a black shirt with a diagonal white stripe, much like Piemonte Calcio’s fake jersey in FIFA 20.

Realism is key for Football Manager fans when building their dynasties in the game and thus most gamers will want to play as realistic a simulation as possible with Juventus playing in Serie A and other licensing issues fixed like the Euro Cup and Euro Vase being properly called the Champions League and Europa League.

Other problems that arise due to licensing requirements are that the Japan national team does not call up real players, Brazilian clubs have fake names, while Bayern Munich have a fake manager at the start of the game. All these problems can be fixed in the same process which requires some files to be deleted and added on your PC or Mac.

FM2020 Real Name and Licensing Fix

Changing club and competition names to the real names in Football Manager 2020 is quite straight forward as long as you follow the steps below.

The files can be downloaded from SortItOutSI or FMScout  and need to be extracted to your computer. You may need to register an account, but it is free and takes just a minute or two.

Then, you can copy and paste the downloaded folders and files to the right locations.

Once you have downloaded and extracted the files, follow these instructions:

Now, when you start a new game, the real name fixes will be applied. Some of the changes will work for existing save games, but if you started a game before applying these changes, Juventus will still be called Zebre.

To ensure all the changes are updated, you will need to start a new career game.

Bottas visits Mercedes F1 factory – report

Valterri Bottas has inched closer to replacing Nico Rosberg at Mercedes after  reportedly visiting the German manufacturer’s UK-based factory in Brackley before Christmas.

According to Motorsport.com, Bottas “tried out the cockpit of the 2017-spec Mercedes” car while also meeting the engineers he could be associated with next season.

  • Best of … Scene at 2016

Mercedes has been looking for a replacement to Rosberg since the 2016 world champion stunned the F1 community by announcing his retirement only a few days after winning the title in Abu Dhabi.

Although Bottas had a Williams contract for 2017, the 27-year-old quickly emerged as the front runner to land the seat.

The Grove-based outfit was initially reluctant to let Bottas go, but it has found a contingency plan in re-signing Felipe Massa, who had retired at the end of the 2016 campaign.

The Brazilian veteran will bring a wealth of experience to both Williams and new rookie team-mate Lance Stroll amid radical regulation changes.

The report adds that Mercedes did contemplate promoting Manor’s Pascal Wehrlein but eventually ruled that its 22-year-old protégé was not ready to join a championship-caliber team yet. The former DTM champion has been tipped to find refuge at Sauber alongside Marcus Ericsson.

Mercedes has already said it will not make any official announcement until after the New Year.

Engine equalisation would rein in Mercedes dominance – Tost

Toro Rosso boss Franz Tost believes that Mercedes’ dominance in the past three seasons stems more from its power unit than anything else.

Indeed, the German outfit superbly negotiated the turn which ushered in the 1.6 litre V6 hybrid era, with its an engineering in the field clearly a step ahead of its rivals.

While Tost echoed the majority of F1’s voices in hoping that next year’s regulation change would upset the order at the front, he isn’t a big believer in Mercedes’ demise in 2017..

“If you want to make the show better, first we must equalise the engines,” said the Austrian.

“If in 2017 Mercedes still has the edge, then the FIA must freeze the engines to allow the others to catch up the gap.

“Right now we have a championship of engines, because at the wheel of a Mercedes, Alonso and Vettel would have become champions too.”

Tost was nevertheless hopeful of the Silver Arrows at least being challenged more often.

“I’m hoping Red Bull and Ferrari can make progress,” he insisted.

“Viewers want to see different winners, as well as accidents without serious consequences. I constantly hear from my friends ‘Accidents don’t even happen at the starts anymore’.

“And we need to get rid of the penalties,”

Brown: the opening of a new era for McLaren!

McLaren executive Zak Brown said there is no better way to mark the beginning of a new era for the iconic racing team than presenting a car with a complete new livery.

Following over a month of teasing tweets, the orange and black robe of McLaren’s 2017 MCL32 is indeed all-new, but also a throwback to the team’s historic roots, a wish apparently conveyed to McLaren by its fan-base..

“It’s a bit of a new era for us,” Brown said.

“Any great company has different chapters and our last one is an encyclopedia of success. We hit a little bit of the refresh button.”

“The fans have been telling us what they want to see and we’ve responded to our millions of fans around the world.

“About 1000 people have put in effort to contribute to what this car looks like.”

  • McLaren-Honda MCL32 revealed !

McLaren and engine partner Honda, which has designed an all-new power unit for the 2017 season, are looking  for a substantial move up the ranks as the team ambitions to revive its former luster.

“We’re very excited for the new year and Eric [Boullier] has built a great racing team,” Brown added.

“We need to show that we’re going faster and that we’ve got a chance of winning. A world championship is not far away.

“Fernando is loving it here and we love Fernando.”

“McLaren has always been the team in Formula 1 for me, and I’m massively motivated to be able to help re-establish the team where I firmly believe it belongs: at the very pinnacle of Formula 1.”

“What you see is where we’re at. We’re very happy with the executive team and the collective group. Ways of working, everyone is different. I like to walk the factory floor and say hi to the guys and gals every morning.

“The MTC [McLaren Technology Centre, its Woking HQ] is kind of like Star Wars, but we’ve maybe been a little bit too Darth Vader and need to be a little bit more Luke Skywalker.”

‘Hamilton and Alonso are like Messi and Ronaldo’, says Sainz

Carlos Sainz says that Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso are Formula 1’s answer to football icons  Messi and Ronaldo.

The two soccer talents have been at the forefront of their sport for many years, trading awards and the title of best player of the year.

F1 fans may not fully agree with the Toro Rosso driver’s assessment, with many probably adding Sebastian Vettel, Daniel ricciardo or even Max Verstappen to the mix.

“Hamilton is the Messi of F1 and Christian Ronaldo would be Fernando Alonso, although Christiano wants it all, to win and to be the best,” Sainz told Spanish publication Marca.

“Fernando also wants to win, but not both.”

  • Sainz endures toughest physical prep program ever

Sainz has never denied his admiration for Alonso, considering his countryman as a role model as a young driver.

Now that he’s on the grid with the McLaren driver, and even in front of him on occasion, he can get a front row seat , like in last year’s US Grand Prix, and see exactly why he compares his talent to the skills of the Real Madrid striker.

“Fernando is a fighter and has so much experience, he’s always more difficult to pass than the others. He’s an old dog who knows everything”.

Hulk on Renault: ‘Keep it simple and focus on the important things’

Nico Hulkenberg believes Renault should follow Force India’s route, and keep things simple while making the most of its resources.

There’s no doubt about how efficient and cost-effective Force India has been in the last few years, and Hulkenberg says Renault can take a few pointers from his former team.

“Some big teams have so many resources and they get lost sometimes in the complexity of the sport and of engineering,” the German told Racer’s Chris Medland.

“At Force India I think we were good at keeping it simple, focusing on the important stuff and that way we ran pretty well and successfully.”

Despite Force India’s impressive performance , Hulkenberg departed Vijay Mallya’s outfit, convinced his long term interests would be better served by Renault and the French manufacturer’s ambitions.

It hasn’t been an easy return to Grand Prix racing however for the works team following its takeover of Lotus at the end of 2015. But Hulkenberg is a believer in the canary-yellow squad.

“There’s a lot of work in front of us but I find that exciting. I know what they’re doing and what the shorter-term and longer-term plan is. It sounds encouraging to me.”
