Button always happy to head west

Jenson Button looks on to the USGP in Austin next weekend as the Brit winds down his season and perhaps even his career in Grand Prix racing.

The McLaren has always been a big fan of the Circuit of the Americas and of the US in general, spending as much time as he can in North America, and in California in particular, the home of many of his friends and Button’s girlfriend, American model Brittny Ward.

“I’m looking forward to heading back to Austin,” said the 36-year-old.

“I’ve been spending more and more time in the States recently and Austin is a city with passionate fans that really love their racing.

“The atmosphere downtown is really relaxed and we usually take the opportunity to sample the famous Texan cuisine in one or two of the restaurants over the course of the weekend.

“I’ve always liked racing at this circuit and we managed to put up a good fight last year despite not having the best outright pace, so I’m hoping for more of the same and a bit of a boost after the disappointment of our result in Japan.”

Indeed, McLaren’s Japanese Grand Prix is one to be quickly written off and there is perhaps no better place than Austin to do so.

“COTA is one of the few anti-clockwise circuits on the calendar, and has a bit of everything: fast corners, slow corners and heavy braking zones.

“You need a car with good balance, which tends to be one of the strengths of our car. There’s lots of fast, sweeping corners in the first sector, the long straight in the second sector, and then the infield section in the final sector which is tight and twisty with long apexes and high g-forces.

“You really need to prepare the car for everything! For a driver it’s great fun and I hope we enjoy a better result there than in Suzuka.”

There Could Be Relief For Depositors In Scam-Hit PMC Bank As HDIL Promoters Agree To Sell Their Property To Repay Loans

There could be some good news on the way for thousands of ordinary depositors in the scam-hit Punjab and Maharashtra Co-operative Bank (PMC) who had been running from pillar-to-post to get their money back.

This after the promoters of the now-bankrupt Housing Development and Infrastructure Limited (HDIL) has sought to sell off their assets, including a yacht, a Rolls Royce and an aircraft, to pay off the bank’s dues.

Horner: Tough to challenge Lewis even with right tyres

Click:微信过滤

Christian Horner admits “it would have been difficult to challenge” Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton at last Sunday’s rain-hit Brazilian Grand Prix even if Red Bull had made the right tyre call.

The Milton Keynes-based outfit gambled on a switch to the intermediate compound only for the conditions to worsen at Interlagos.

This forced both Red Bull drivers to pit for a new set of extreme-weather tyres, which dropped them down the order.

Max Verstappen then showed tremendous speed to recover to third over the final segment of the race, but Horner thinks Hamilton, who led the race from start to finish, had the situation under control up front.

“It would have been difficult to challenge Lewis,” the Red Bull team principal said. “We managed to get into second place, but Lewis seemed to have the pace to cover us, so that is why we took a slight risk with the strategy to roll the dice, looking like hopefully the intermediate would come alive.

“It became apparent to us shortly afterwards as the rain very slightly increased, that we needed to abort that strategy, which was quite painful behind the Safety Car because you drop back a significant amount of positions.”

While Hamilton seemed out of reach, Nico Rosberg, who could not match his team-mate’s pace under the rain, admitted after the race that he had been relieved to see Red Bull pit Verstappen for inters, as it helped him secure second place at Interlagos.

Gautam Gambhir Helps 7-Year-Old Pakistani Girl Get Visa For Heart Surgery In Delhi

A seven-year-old Pakistani girl, with a congenital heart disorder, was issued a visa to undergo treatment in India after BJP MP Gautam Gambhir wrote to the Ministry of External Affairs, requesting help for the ailing girl.

The girl, Omaima Ali and her parents, were granted a visa after external affairs minister S Jaishankar said he has directed the Indian High Commissioner in Islamabad to do the required.

Gambhir told PTI that he had learnt about the girl’s condition through a phone call to his office by former Pakistani cricketer Mohammad Yousuf (earlier Yusuf Youhana) recently. Following this, the MP wrote to the MEA on October 1, seeking help for the child.

Magnussen has always been on our radar – Haas

Haas F1 Team founder and chairman Gene Haas says new recruit Kevin Magnussen has always been on the US team’s shortlist, even before it made its Formula One debut this year.

The Dane has been confirmed as Romain Grosjean’s new team-mate in replacement of the departing Esteban Gutierrez.

Magnussen is thus set to join his third outfit in as many years in a full-time role after driving for McLaren and Renault.

“From the time we began looking at drivers, Kevin Magnussen was always on our short list,” Haas said. “He’s accomplished a lot in a very short period of time, and we feel like he can accomplish a lot with us.

“Our second season will bring a new set of challenges, and we feel that pairing Kevin with Romain will help us develop our new car and continue our growth.”

Team principal Guenther Steiner adds that Magnussen’s credentials, which includes securing a podium finish on his very first grand prix in Australia in 2014 and scoring 62 points in 38 grand prix starts leading into Sunday’s Brazilian Grand Prix, make him an enticing prospect for Haas.

“We want to grow the team and therefore we wanted some experience of drivers who have been on the podium and scored points and Kevin fits the bill so we’ll move forward with him,” he said.

Both Steiner and Haas were also quick to praise what Gutierrez has achieved over his single season with the team.

“Credit also goes to Esteban for all of his work,” Steiner continued.  “His time with Ferrari was very beneficial as it helped get us acquainted with its methodologies and make the most of our partnership with them.

“He and Romain pushed each other on the track and together they’re responsible for the success we’ve had in our first season.”

“I want to thank Esteban for all of his effort,” Haas concluded. “He’s been an instrumental part of our first year in Formula One and we’re looking forward to finishing the season strong with him and Romain.”

Grosjean crashes on way to grid at Brazilian Grand Prix

Romain Grosjean will not start the Brazilian Grand Prix after crashing on his way to the grid.

In wet conditions, Grosjean spun and hit the wall on the long run to the finish line on his installation lap at Interlagos. The Frenchman’s Haas was heavily damaged in the incident, ruling him out of the race which was delayed by ten minutes and will start behind the Safety Car.

Grosjean had been due to start from seventh on the grid having impressed during qualifying on Saturday. Haas team principal Guenther Steiner said there was no obvious reason for the incident other than driver error.

“It seems like he just lost the car, but I’m not sure as I haven’t spoken to him,” Steiner told Sky Sports.

When it was put to Steiner it’s even more disappointing after Grosjean’s impressive qualifying performance, he replied: “Absolutely, I mean it’s a great chance here. We need to see what happened, but for sure it’s a wasted chance.”

With the race starting behind the Safety Car, Nico Hulkenberg – previously due to start from eighth place – will move up directly behind Daniel Ricciardo in the train of cars.

Gutierrez unhappy with Sainz in Japan

Esteban Gutierrez expressed his annoyance with Carlos Sainz’s defensive move on lap 19 of last weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix.

The Haas driver qualified tenth and was running consistently in the top ten until his pitstop on lap 11 which sent him to the tail end of the field.

He picked up his race from there and locked himself on to Sainz Toro Rosso, eventually challenging the Spaniard for position at the chicane on lap 19 by diving into the inside of Sainz.

The Spaniard countered the move however and forced the Mexican into a spin.

“I don’t think it was fair from his side,” explained the Mexican.

“Because he knew that I was going to go deep, he knew that I was going to go inside. I had the space, I had the speed, and he closed the door completely.

“So obviously I had to turn in as well and brake, otherwise I would have crashed into him.”

After the mishap, Gutierrez , who is yet to be confirmed at Haas for 2017, remained at the back of the field for pretty much the remainder of the afternoon, ultimately finishing a distant 20th.

“We did a really good start, we were happy with the pace. It was going really well at the beginning, and when we pitted, we came out with a lot of traffic.

“I  don’t know what went wrong there. I think we could have done a bit better with the strategy.

“I pushed all the way, it was not the ideal position to be in, and then after the blue flags, it seems like everything went wrong.

“We have to keep pushing, we showed very good pace in qualifying, and we have to carry through to the rest of the season. We have to take the positives, it’s not really the race we wanted.”

McLaren gearing up for contract talks with Alonso

McLaren’s Zak Brown says that contract talks with Fernando Alonso will likely begin after the first few races of the season.

Alonso’s run with McLaren since he re-joined the team in 2015 has not been fruitful. While progress was made last year following a dismal 2015, the Spaniard has yet to stand on a podium with the Woking-based outfit, let alone win.

Such a dry spell for a two-time world champion and a driver of Alonso’s status is not acceptable. One would believe that if contract talks are to begin early, than McLaren’s 2017 car would have to be competitive out of the box to entice Alonso to remain on-board.

“He’s definitely committed to the project, but his contract is up and he’s in high demand as you can imagine,” Brown said in an interview with NBC Sports.

“Vettel is out of a contract next year [too], that’s my understanding. So as you can imagine, next year’s going to be an exciting driver market.

“Obviously we’d love to keep him. He’s one of the greatest drivers on the track, if not the best.  But we’re just going to see how things go and kick off those conversations a few races into the year.”

  • Fernando Alonso’s Hollywood dream date

Brown admitted that Alonso’s frame of mind will undoubtedly be determined by his car’s level of performance.

“Yeah, if I were him, I’d want to see how we perform before I started making decisions,” Brown added.

“You can’t blame him for that. But I think we’re all waiting to see and that goes both ways.”
