Women’s pool shoes receive a fresh update with bold prints and sportive detailing. Multi-strap uppers are set off by vibrant primary tones and graphic geometric patterns, mounted onto flat or blocked sandwich soles. Metallic shades lend a touch of luxe, while mixed materials and colour pop details add extra interest.

The Luxe Pool Slider

In menswear, pool sliders are refined for summer with luxury trims and fabrications, with decorative cut-outs elevating simple strap styles with a more directional feel. Wide straps create an unfussy silhouette for high-end designs, while sneaker-style soles inject an unexpected sportswear sensibility.

At Fashion Houses, designers must leave their mark

London – As Alexander Wang leaves
a new vacancy at Balenciaga, it reminds us how difficult it is for
designers to leave their mark at a historical fashion house.

Stepping into the shoes of Cristobal Balenciaga, Yves Saint Laurent, Guccio
Gucci, or even Alexander McQeen, whose legacies are visual reminders of
their greatness, is both daunting and nigh on impossible. But fashion
houses are keen to stay modern and relevant, and it is precisely those
creatives who can balance the zeitgeist with the archives, that can lead a
fashion house into a new era.

Staying respecctful to the house’s codes

Earlier this year Alessandro Michele turned Gucci around with one fell
swoop, swapping its sex appeal for bohemianism. Like Tom Ford’s monumental
Gucci revamp for AW95, it has thus far been a triumphant success. Despite
the new androgeny and pussy-bow blouses, there were plenty of old school
Gucci references, like the horsebit detailing, red and green colour
scheme, to remind us of its stature. Sales quickly went up 4.9 percent,
after three consecutive losses under its previous designer.

Hedi Slimane at Saint Laurent also managed to send sales soaring, tapping
into a new customer that was more downtown LA than Parisian chic. As
controversial as his changes were, Slimane effortlessly modernised the
House’s codes, making it rock and roll chic, even updating the brand’s name
and logo.

Taking over a house now is very different to ten or fifteen years ago.
Thanks to the rapid rise of the internet and social media, fashion show
images are available immediately to everyone, not just industry insiders
and which six months later appear on the pages of magazines. Fashion houses
and its designers must connect with an audience all the time, of which
Olivier Rousteing’s work at Balmain is a key example. Rousteing connected
to a new generation of fashion fans previously ignored by the industry. “My
Instagram is full of young people who go, ‘I want to have your career,’” he
told Dazed last year. “I want to spread this message of believing in
yourself.”

When Jeremy Scott made his debut at Moschino, many did not share his overt
references to American culture. His fashion was filled with images of
McDonald’s, Barbie and breakfast cereals, a hyperreal blend of consumption
and appropriation. Of course Scott received plenty of criticism for his His
Happy Meal handbags and Chanel-inspired t-shirts, but from a financial
perspective his designs boosted Moschino’s sales by 7 percent. He stuck to
the codes but made them his own.

A designer’s vision must therefore be all encompassing. It is not just
about a fashion show or the ensuing seasonal campaign, but to the gang that
surrounds the brand, the music models will walk to, interesting side
projects, collaborations and exhibitions, and how the brand embraces social
media.

Gucci stores getting a makeover

New York – Last January, Gucci was blessed with Alessandro Michele as their new
creative director. Under his leadership, the brand has returned to glory.
Now that the brand has received a makeover, Gucci plans on giving their
stores a makeover.

Michele has a lot of opulent ideas for how he is hoping to transform the
store, two major motifs include marble staircases and velvet chairs. His
fall/winter collection for Gucci will be shown at Milan’s Gucci flagship
store in a luxurious space that includes oriental rugs and plush
carpets. The new store concept is expected to be introduced at other Gucci
stores beginning after Friday’s show.

In a statement, Marco Bizzarri, Gucci’s CEO said the store format is “one
of the ways in which we are communicating Gucci’s new identity.” Bizzarri
was brought over from Bottega Veneta when Michele was promoted to Creative
Director of Gucci, with hope that together the two could revive the
stagnant luxury brand. Under Michele’s creative direction, Gucci’s sales
have grown for the first time in almost 2 years in the second quarter.

In their restructuring efforts, Gucci has overhauled management, cut
wholesale accounts, and introduced new advertising and packaging. Next week
during Milan Fashion Week, Michele’s hotly anticipated spring/summer 2016
collection will be unveiled to the public, and it is sure to help continue
Gucci’s train of success.

‘I don't know what is going to happen’ – Zaha's future at Palace uncertain, says Parish

The Ivory Coast international has been central to the club’s successful start to the season after being wanted by Arsenal and Everton in the summer

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish says he is unsure what will happen regarding the future of star player Wilfried Zaha.

The winger was the subject of wide speculation over his future in the summer, with Arsenal and Everton both attempting to lure the 26-year-old away from Selhurst Park.

And Palace chairman Parish has reiterated manager Roy Hodgson’s thoughts that any bids received for Zaha throughout the summer did not come close to the club’s asking price.

“You say a transfer request came in but let’s pass on that,” Parish told BBC 5Live. “It was no secret that Wilfried would like to further his career – possibly with a Champions League club and that is a discussion I have had with him.

“A Champions League club did not offer us anything like the kind of money that would be acceptable to any football club. I don’t think anybody thought it was an amount of money that was acceptable so the player did not leave.”

Arsenal were undoubtedly the front-runners to land Zaha in the summer, but it has been reported their £40 million (€46m/$52m) bid fell short of Palace’s valuation.

Zaha then handed in a transfer request in August in order to force a move, but Hodgson and Palace stood firm, with the Gunners then turning to Nicolas Pepe to solve their attacking woes.

The Ivory Coast international has since re-established himself as a regular feature in the side this season, helping the club cement a place in the top half of the Premier League after 10 games, but his future remains uncertain.

“Every transfer window there is a chance to buy and sell players,” added Parish.

“I do not have a crystal ball, I do not know what is going to happen. There will be circumstances where it will be the right move for Wilfried and the football club and there will be circumstances when it won’t be and that will be down to the state the club is in at the time and the situation of the buying club.

“This is someone who has a strong affinity with the club and he is an extremely good person. He loves the fans, he loves the club.

“These things happen in football, he is aware of that. We want to look after him as best we can but I know he will always do the best for this football club.”

Guardiola accuses Liverpool’s ‘special talent’ Mane of diving

Pep Guardiola has stoked the fires ahead of next week’s clash between Premier League champions Manchester City and league leaders Liverpool by accusing the Reds’ star forward Sadio Mane of diving.

Guardiola was speaking after a dramatic day for the leading duo, who both scored late goals as they came from behind to win – City beating Southampton 2-1 at home and Liverpool winning 2-1 away to Aston Villa.

Mane scored Liverpool’s winner in the fourth minute of stoppage time at Villa Park, but had seen yellow for simulation in the first half of the game.

“It has happened many times, what Liverpool have done, in the last few years, it’s because (Mane) is a special talent,” Guardiola told BBC Sport.

“Sometimes he’s diving, sometimes he has this talent to score incredible goals in the last minute. He’s a talent.”

Liverpool had trailed to Trezeguet’s 21st-minute goal but finally drew level when Andy Robertson scored in the 87th minute before Mane’s winner.

“If it’s one time, two times, ‘we were lucky, we were lucky’, but it happened in the last two seasons many, many times – they have a special character to do that,” Guardiola said of Liverpool’s late goals.

“We look at ourselves, we know which team we face, I think they have won 10 and drawn one. Next week we go to Anfield to try to play them.”

City, who have not won in the league at Anfield since 2003, will start Sunday’s match six points behind Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Klopp admits he thought Liverpool’s luck had run out

Jurgen Klopp admitted that Aston Villa made his Liverpool side look ordinary as the league leaders had to come from behind to win 2-1 at Villa Park.

The Reds looked to be headed for defeat, before Andy Robertson and Sadio Mane scored in the final five minutes to seal yet another dramatic comeback.

It’s the kind of turnaround that Klopp will now be used to seeing from his team, but he revealed that the emotions he felt after the game were incomparable to anything else.

“The best possible in football,” he said. “You saw the routine, we’ve tried it before a couple of times. If you can use it in a very decisive moment… Sadio’s cross for Robbo’s goal was sensational too.

“We made it difficult for ourselves. We started playing football, good, but not exactly as we should have done. We conceded a goal, it wasn’t easy to change decisions of bad passes and so on.

“Second half we started much better. Then we could change twice. Shooting from distance from [Alex] Ox[lade-Chamberlain] helps massively, moving Sadio right, giving Ox half-space. Aston Villa will feel they deserved something.

“Because we had a couple of comebacks, I didn’t think today we’d do another one. But it’s possible. We don’t have any alternative (than to keep going). It would have been a tough game because of quality of Villa but we helped them.

“We got knocks, and in the moment so far we can sort it most of the time. When you score late is is ‘lucky’ but it’s not like we didn’t deserve to win.

“I didn’t like our body language in first half. We didn’t look like warriors. We were like… players.”

A couple of contentious decisions came into focus, with VAR overturning a Roberto Firmino goal for an incredibly marginal offside, and Sadio Mane being booked for an alleged dive in the penalty area.

Klopp, however, did not want to linger too long on either decision.

“When you see Mane back you can see it’s not a dive as there is contact. But it’s a yellow card given… and he still stayed in the game.

“We won 2-1 so the VAR is not that serious. It’s not the right way we sit here and want to laugh about it. Managers can get sacked for losing football games. I don’t want to make it bigger than it is, but we have to clarify it. Nobody is doing it on purpose.

“The analyst showed me it (Firmino’s disallowed goal). Sometimes it is in your favour, sometimes it isn’t. But we have to make sure the new system helps the game and not confuses it. That’s in the best interest of all of this.”

Firmino's armpit ruled offside as Premier League explains disallowed goal amid more VAR outrage

The Brazilian strayed off with a curious part of his anatomy to rob the visitors of the chance to equalise at Villa Park

Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino’s armpit fell foul of the offside law on Saturday as his goal against Aston Villa was overruled in the most marginal of calls thanks to VAR.

The Brazilian had appeared to level at Villa Park after Trezeguet had given the hosts a shock lead early on.

But the linesman’s flag went up as he finished, and the decision was referred to the video officials to have the final say.

Firmino looked to be level, with perhaps a fraction of his body beyond the last defender, but that was enough to call play back and maintain Villa’s lead going into half time.

The Premier League attempted to quell the inevitable criticisms with a tweet explaining why Liverpool’s equaliser had been overturned.

“The red line signifies Firmino and was aligned to his armpit, which was marginally ahead of the last Villa defender,” the governing body clarified as they showed the VAR decision in detail.

But it was not enough to stop the onslaught of critics, most of whom believed the goal should have stood.

Film And Television Comic John Witherspoon Dies At 77

John Witherspoon leaves a taping of The Late Show with David Letterman in New York in December 2009. Actor-comedian Witherspoon, who memorably played Ice Cube’s father in the Friday films, has died at age 77.

Actor and comedian John Witherspoon, whose first roles were on 1970s TV shows such as Barnaby Jones and The Richard Pryor Show but who was best known for his role as the crotchety dad in the Friday films, has died at 77.

Witherspoon’s family confirmed his death in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

“It is with deepest sorrow that we can confirm our beloved husband and father, John Witherspoon, one of the hardest working men in show business, died today at his home in Sherman Oaks at the age of 77,” the family said in a statement.

Witherspoon, who was born John Weatherspoon in Detroit in 1942, started his career as a stand-up comic and continued to play clubs throughout his life. In one of his early roles, on Barnaby Jones, Witherspoon played a counselor at a camp for drug-addicted children alongside a young Sean Penn in Penn’s first credited role.

Later, Witherspoon appeared in Good Times, What’s Happening!! and The Incredible Hulk, among others. He became a regular on The Richard Pryor Show. Years later, he had recurring roles in The Wayans Bros. and The Tracy Morgan Show.

He voiced Robert “Granddad” Freeman in the animated sitcom The Boondocks, which wrapped in 2014. However, in May, Witherspoon said the show and his character were set for a revival.

His feature films included Hollywood Shuffle, Boomerang, Vampire in Brooklyn, I’m Gonna Git You Sucka, Bird, The Meteor Man and all three of the Friday comedies starring Ice Cube and Chris Tucker — Friday (1995), Next Friday (2000) and Friday After Next (2002).

Ice Cube tweeted that “Life won’t be as funny without him.”

Witherspoon is survived by his wife, Angela, and two sons, JD and Alexander. The family was “in shock” over his death and asked for privacy.

“John used to say ‘I’m no big deal,’ but he was huge deal to us,” the family said in a statement.

Correction Oct. 30, 2019

A previous version of this story said that Witherspoon’s first television role was on the show Barnaby Jones. His first role was actually on The Richard Pryor Show.

Neville: Solskjaer ‘one game from clouds circling again’

Gary Neville claims that three consecutive victories do not mean that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can now relax as Manchester United manager.

There has been what Neville has termed a ‘mini-revival’ with a draw at home to Liverpool being followed by wins over Partizan Belgrade, Norwich City and now Chelsea in the Carabao Cup.

They now face Bournemouth in one of the highlights of a Big Weekend of football, with Neville claiming that defeat could send United back down into mid-table.

“As a United fan, I went into the Liverpool game panicking,” he told talkSPORT.

“I was thinking this could be a bad day, this could get moody in the stadium, Liverpool are a great team and they could go 3-0 up – but United played really well.

“Ole had been questioned tactically but he got it right on the day and that was the start of this little run they’re on, beating Partizan and then the Norwich win was big.

“I don’t think they would have been capable of going to Norwich and winning pre the international break. That Liverpool game gave them a little bit of confidence to think: “We’re better than this, let’s be positive and beat Norwich”.

“So there has been a mini-revival, but I don’t think Ole will be sat comfortable in his chair. I think he realises he is one game away from the clouds circling again.

“Ole is looking up the table rather than look down, so it’s an important game.”

Liverpool midfielder admits he wants to leave Anfield for Spain

Pedro Chirivella says he would like to “return to Spain” with his chances of playing for Liverpool “not continuous”.

The young midfielder has had loans at Go Ahead Eagles and Willem II in the Netherlands but he has failed to earn a regular place in Jurgen Klopp’s first-team squad on his return.

Chirivella moved from Valencia’s youth ranks to Liverpool‘s academy in 2013 and, despite making two League Cup substitute appearances this term, the opportunities aren’t coming regularly enough for the Spaniard.

“I have had two or three windows where I was about to leave,” Chirivella told Marca.

“Or that I get to leave, but that by other people’s circumstances I just can’t enjoy minutes where I want, which is in Spain.

“The same thing happened a little this summer; I was close to going to Spain again, but due to circumstances the club decided that I had to stay again.

“And I loved every time I had the opportunity. But you have to be realistic; the opportunities are not continuous due to the players at the club.

“Yes, I would like to find a solution in January and return to Spain. And if not, we would look to next summer to return to Spain definitely.”
