Jonathan Saunders for Topshop

Topshop, the high-street fashion giant, has announced its partnership with the colour and print master Jonathan Saunders is to continue into 2010 with the launch of a new 2010 denim and devore collection, hitting Topshop stores at the end of January. Geometric shapes and block colours run throughout this five-piece collection. A denim pencil skirt and matching cropped strapless basque are in panelled denim dyed in three different jean colours, ideal to be worn together, but can also be styled to great effect apart. A geometric devore grid design runs down the full length of a black body-conscious full length dress, a sweatshirt and a loose-fitting jersey tee, great for relaxed urban living.

Scottish born print designer Jonathan Saunders graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 1999 with a BA in Printed Textiles, going on to graduate from Central Saint Martin’s in 2002 gaining an MA with distinction in Printed Textiles. Jonathan joined the New Gen scheme for three seasons 2004-2005, sponsored by Topshop, which began their working relationship. Following three seasons showing in New York, Saunders has recently returned to London.

One of Saunders’ trademarks has been his use of traditional silk screening techniques, developing the concept of engineering prints around pattern pieces. Whilst print is still integral to his designs, more recently he has focused on the development of an architectural, clean form, perfectly displayed in his devore jersey pieces for Topshop.

Jonathan commented: “My collection for Topshop this season has been inspired by sportswear and workwear, as well as the bold and graphic shapes of the Memphis movement. It’s perfect for urban city dwellers”.

The new collection is Jonathan’s fourth for Topshop and will be available through selected stores: Oxford Circus, London Selfridges, Liverpool, Manchester Arndale, and online at Topshop.com.

Marc Jacobs: How to market a fashion faux pas

It was a faux pas by
any reasonable standard: director of company posts photo of bare bottom on
brand’s Instagram account with the tag – ‘it’s yours to try.’ The
explanation for said error was that it was meant to be sent as a private
message.

We are talking of course about Marc Jacobs, designer of his own namesake
label, owned by luxury group LVMH. Mr Jacobs was engaging in a private
conversation, but did not manage to privately send his buttocks’ photo.
While the image was swiftly deleted from the feed, the response to his
error has been lukewarm. Mostly it has been seen as something humorous, a
little mistake to be brushed off and forgotten. Nobody has significantly
made any fuss.

Would the world be as forgiving if it was Tim Cook?

But what if a comparable incident occurred outside of the fashion industry?
What if Tim Cook from Apple sent a nude selfie by error on the Mac
Instagram account? Or Bill Gates at Microsoft? Or worse, Marc Zuckerberg at
Facebook? Would the world shrug it off as a silly little mistake?

Just last month Lord Sewell resigned from the House of Lords after a photo
of him emerged snorting cocaine. When Kate Moss was caught on camera using
cocaine the fashion industry responded with t-shirts emblazoned ‘We Love
You Kate,’ and the following season her campaigns and earnings doubled. The
fashion industry appears to be exempt from drug and sexual exploitations.

Rather than marginalising his actions, Jacobs response was refreshingly
frank: “I was flirting with someone I met on Instagram. Meant to send it by
DM. Oops, my mistake. I apologise to anyone it offended. I’m a gay man. I
flirt and chat with guys online sometimes. BIG DEAL!”

And perhaps Jacobs is right? What is the big deal? Social media and the
digital realm is used as much as a business platform for companies and
brands as it is for personal connections. Who hasn’t engaged in a bit of
online flirtation? Why make a mountain out of a molehill?

Marc Jacobs is responsible for the content of his account, and can
therefore choose what to post and to whom. Should that come with
consequences for his label? If there are, these consequences appear to be a
marketing opportunity.

Jacobs has since uploaded another (non-nude) photo of himself in a t-shirt
emblazoned with the words “Themarcjacobs it’s yours to try!” under which
he’s written the caption “I mean the t-shirt! Now available (THE
T-SHIRT!!!) at a MARC JACOBS store near you.

A little faux pas doesn’t go a long way in this industry.

Esprit expands ‘Peta-Approved Vegan’ footwear line

Following the succesful launch of high street retailer Esprit’s first line
of leather-free trainers , which featured a ‘Peta-Approve
Vegan’ tag, the label has decided to expand the range offering.

The second line of animal and eco friendly footwear features 25
different footwear styles, in addition to trainers. The footwear range now
includes ballet flats, sandals and loafers and is available online or at
selected Esprit stores around the globe.

“Esprit was founded on a basis of creativity and responsibility and this
spirit is still alive today,” explains Martin Krist, Global Business
Manager Shoes at Esprit. “This is reflected in our continued efforts to
transfer the philosophy of appealing vegan fashion to a commercial
lifestyle product
.
With Peta’s support, we can bring more transparency to conscious consumers
and hope to further expand this collaboration.”

The footwear range was also designed to help raise awareness for the
environmental destruction caused by factory farming and the leather
industry, which ranges from carbon emissions produced by cattle farms to
the toxic tannery chemicals that pollute local water supplies. The
environmental footprint from animal-free fabrics, whether they be natural
or synthetic, is minor in comparison to non-animal free materials, as well
as animal friendly, sparing the animals from castration, branding, tail
docking and other cruelties suffered before death.

Therefore, the new footwear range features tags – in English, French
and German–which read:’This product has been designed to be kind to animals.
It is vegan approved by Peta, meaning that no animal has been involved
in the production of this product.’

“Loafers, sandals, flats – shoppers seeking stylish leather-free shoes
have more choices than ever, thanks to Esprit’s latest ‘Peta-Approved
Vegan’ line”,adds Peta UK Associate Director Mimi Bekhechi. “The
success of Esprit’s vegan designs is proof of the enormous demand from
consumers around the world for sustainable, animal-friendly fashion.”

Amazon opens fashion photography studio in London

Online giant has opened a new multi-million pound
fashion photography studio in London’s Shoreditch, as it looks to continue
growing its fashion business.

The photography studio is one of the largest of its kind in Europe, at
46,000 square foot it houses 22 individual photography bays, a large state
of the art editorial suite, video editing facilities, a creative fashion
library, and office space for Amazon’s growing team of fashion
creatives.

The online retailer has said that it expects the studio to produce more
than half a million images a year, and added that the opening has meant 35
new permanent roles at the studio and up to 75 will also be brought in to
support seasonal demand.

The move to open a studio comes as the online retailer revealed that it
has sold more than 30 million fashion products across Europe in the last
quarter alone, from April 1 to June 30.

Sergio Bucher, vice president of Amazon Fashion EU, said: “Our aim is to
make Amazon the best place to buy fashion online, The opening of our new
fashion studio, in the heart of one of the leading fashion capitals of the
world, illustrates our ambitions.

“We are committed to providing a first class customer experience and our
new studio will enable us to produce more than half a million images a year
as our fashion business continues to grow.”

The facility is the latest investment by Amazon in London. Amazon
recently completed the move of its 2,000 corporate employees to three
offices in the capital, while construction of a new corporate office at
Principal Place in Shoreditch is underway and is scheduled to open in 2017.
When that building opens Amazon will have total capacity for over 5,000
employees in London.

Crowdfunding drive to help rebuild Shuri Castle in Naha raises over ¥240 million

A total of more than ¥240 million has been donated by more than 17,000 people to a crowdfunding campaign set up by the city of Naha, Okinawa Prefecture, to help rebuild Shuri Castle after it was destroyed by fire last week.

The campaign, set up Friday by the Naha Municipal Government, received more than ¥100 million in donations in its first two days alone, Naha Mayor Mikiko Shiroma said in a statement Sunday, meeting its initial fundraising goal.

“I am deeply moved by the feelings of people, sent from both within and outside of the prefecture, and I want to express my deep gratitude,” Shiroma said.

She said that although the initial target had been met, the city will continue accepting donations through the campaign since rebuilding the castle will cost a huge amount of money.

Large parts of the castle, which is an important symbol for many people in Okinawa Prefecture and a popular tourist attraction, were destroyed in a fire Thursday morning. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the blaze. Investigators said police do not believe the fire was caused by arson.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told a news conference Friday that the central government “will do whatever is necessary for rebuilding, including providing financial support.”

The castle was rebuilt before, under a government project, after it was destroyed in fighting with U.S. forces in World War II in 1945. Underground ruins of the original castle were registered as a part of Japan’s 11th UNESCO World Heritage site in 2000. The registration did not formally include the restored buildings. Thursday’s fire destroyed the restored Seiden main hall, Hokuden north hall and Nanden south hall just days after a festival re-creating scenes from ancient rituals opened at the castle the previous Sunday.

Chubby Nagano Prefecture bear beats nearly 800 other characters to win annual mascot competition

Arukuma, a chubby, green-colored bear wearing a red hood in the shape of an apple around its face and head, was the winner of a high-profile annual contest held in the city of Nagano on Sunday.

The cute, distinctive character, created almost nine years ago, beat 787 others from across the country and secured as many as 106,419 votes in a contest called the Yurukyara Grand Prix 2019.

It is very common for local governments and businesses in the nation to design their own cute mascot characters for public relations purposes.

In Japanese they are called yuru-kyara, which can be roughly translated as “laid-back characters,” the term emphasizing how they contrast with the more refined and sophisticated designs by professionals used at major companies.

This year’s champion officially represents the Nagano Prefectural Government. It was designed to “promote the attractiveness of Shinshu,” which is another name for Nagano Prefecture, according to the character’s official website (arukuma.jp/about)

Apples are one of the prefecture’s speciality products, but Arukuma sometimes wears hoods in the shapes of different Nagano products such as bottles of wine, matsutake mushrooms or soba noodles, or even a Buddhist temple — presumably representing Zenkoji Temple in the city of Nagano.

“I’m really happy. I will keep rooting for (Arukuma) from now on,” a woman from Tokyo was quoted as saying by public broadcaster NHK. According to the report, she has long been a big fan of the endearing green bear.

Limbless writer Hirotada Ototake blazes trail of hope with artificial leg project

Hirotada Ototake, a writer born without arms and legs who is best known for his 1998 memoir “No One’s Perfect,” has embarked on a project to develop electrically operated “robot” legs that will enable him and others like him to walk.

The 43-year-old Ototake, who writes about his challenge in a new book released on Friday, said he hopes to give hope to people who have lost their legs due to disabilities or accidents.

Recently in Tokyo, Ototake took another try at walking with the devices, which were developed by Sony Computer Science Laboratories Inc. Each one, including the shoe, weighs 5 kg. While attempting to keep his balance, he walked cautiously but twisted his face in exhaustion after finishing the exercise.

“After much practice and walking just a short distance I can see that there are many difficulties in using this,” Ototake said. “It’s not just walking. I can’t even stand properly. It’s like taking three steps forward and two steps back.”

Ototake, who also attaches artificial arms during the routine, practices with the artificial limbs once or twice a week. Including time for stretching, each session takes about an hour.

As part of his training, Ototake climbs up and down the emergency staircase in his apartment building on his stumps. He had to have the sockets for the artificial legs reworked to fit his muscular thighs.

The farthest he has walked in an exercise with the artificial legs is 20 meters. But Ototake, who is accustomed to using an electric wheelchair in daily life, said he is not involved in the project just for himself. It is more a matter of helping others.

“There are many people who lost their legs after they were born but hope to walk. I am assisting with spreading the word to people that there is technology that can help them walk again,” he said.

Ken Endo, 41, is the project leader at the Sony laboratory in charge of robotic legs, which come with motors and computers in their “knees.” Endo, who launched the project with Ototake in fall 2017, said the goal is ultimately to have people use the legs to climb steps, stand and walk as naturally as other people. But there is still a long road ahead.

“Human beings’ legs are very well developed, so replacing them with artificial limbs is difficult. But I believe we can develop ones in which the movement is not awkward and eventually have a society where there is no difference between people with disabilities and those who don’t have them,” Endo said.

Ototake said it is all about hope.

“For people who have given up on things in life and are going through hardships, I want them to feel that there is a ray of light that society is changing little by little for the better.”

McGinn admits Villa thought they had ‘got’ arguing Liverpool players

John McGinn admits he thought Aston Villa had “got” Liverpool after seeing their players “arguing with each other”.

Very late goals from Andy Robertson and Sadio Mane saw the Reds come from a goal down to beat Dean Smith’s side 2-1 at Villa Park on Saturday.

Trezeguet opened the scoring for Villa, giving McGinn belief they would win, but Liverpool roared back to maintain their six-point lead at the top of the Premier League.

“A lot of their players were arguing and you could tell they were uncomfortable in the first half,” McGinn told reporters.

“When teams start arguing with each other you normally know you’ve got them but at the same time you have to respect they are such a good team, they just regroup, get together and go again.

“Unfortunately for us they did that.”

McGinn added: “You’re playing against the champions of Europe and they could be the champions of England this year.

“They don’t give up, they keep going and they probably tired us out too much right at the end.

“Chances were coming and we were just trying to keep them at bay but the ball just keeps coming back at you.

“It was two sloppy goals from our point of view but teams like Liverpool do that to you.

“They are relentless. It was the same with Man City last week, they just drain you mentally. You try your best to press them but they are top teams and full credit to them.

“I was speaking to a couple of the Liverpool lads and they said how impressed they were at the way we played them – carry that on and I’m sure we’ll be fine.”

Carragher mocks Neville over Man Utd deal for Sanchez

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has joked with Gary Neville on social media over the former right-back’s claim that Alexis Sanchez would be a good signing for Manchester United.

It was another controversial weekend in the Premier League with a number of VAR decisions questioned and Carragher aired his thoughts on Instagram.

“I defended #VAR at the start as I felt the process needed to be given a chance,” Carragher wrote.

“I argued with people who were set against it & I really wanted it to take the game forward.

“But we’re now talking about it more than we ever did about officials & decisions & that can’t be right.”

Neville replied saying: “It’s not the first time you’ve been wrong. We will forgive and continue to live with your errors.”

To which Carragher joked: “Nearly as bad as you telling me Sanchez was a good deal for Utd!!”

Sanchez was one of the most expensive transfer mistakes in history when he joined Manchester United from Arsenal in exchange for Henrikh Mkhitaryan in January 2018.

The Chilean was given the biggest wage in Premier League history for little return, and joined Inter Milan on a season-long loan in the summer.Click Here: liverpool mens jersey
