The New York Red Bulls pro FIFA player has found a couple of midfield gems so far while he is also looking forward to testing out some new Icons

FIFA 19 has been out for less than a month and players are beginning to shape the Ultimate Team squads they want. While the grind for coins is still ongoing, most people won’t have Icons anytime soon – even some pros.

Goal spoke with New York Red Bulls’ pro FIFA player Mike LaBelle to breakdown his 4-2-3-1 squad lead by La Liga superstars Gareth Bale and Lionel Messi. Check out the full interview below…

What one FIFA 19 player do you want to add next?

“My next purchases will definitely be adding Cristiano Ronaldo and a couple of Icons in the midfield. I’m really itching to try out Rui Costa and Hernan Crespo this year, I think both of those cards could be a lot of fun.”

Who is your most expensive player and are they worth the price tag?

“Of course it’s Messi and the simple answer is YES! This is the best Messi we’ve seen in a FIFA title to date in my opinion.

“Most of the time EA has defaulted Messi to a winger position, but he is naturally so much better as a centre-forward or central attacking midfielder. He turns so quickly and with finesse shots currently being overpowered, FIFA 19 caters towards what Messi does perferctly.”

Who is the MVP of your squad and were there any players that completely exceeded your expectations?

“My most valuable players are easily Messi and Bale, which makes sense based on their ratings and price points, but I do want to give credit to both Adrien Rabiot and Geoffrey Kondogbia, who hold down the midfield consistently in each match.

“If you are looking for budget pick-ups, I would recommend both of those guys, especially Kondogbia who is a SPECIAL player for his rating. At 6’2” he has a massive presence on the pitch and is able to utilise his four-star skill moves almost unexpectedly versus other midfield counterparts.”

Which player have you been most disappointed with and why?

“Real Madrid’s Keylor Navas in goal just wasn’t cutting it for me but I know goalkeepers are so subjective in terms of how each individual FIFA player judges their performance. For a player that’s so highly rated, I personally had much higher expectations of him.

Is there a player from the New York Red Bulls that could fit into your squad? Especially with the eMLS still requiring players from your represented club.

“Last year the eMLS required two players from the club you represent plus a third player of your choosing from Major League Soccer. It’s also worth noting that no Icons were permitted!

“This year with New York Red Bulls we fortunately have options! Due to their performance on the pitch, almost all of their players have been upgraded for FIFA 19.

“I will try out Bradley Wright-Phillips, Tyler Adams, Kemar Lawrence, Aaron Long, Tim Parker, Royer, Kaku and Michael Murrilo to see who fits best in my squad.

“In-forms or special cards could also impact choices heavily. It’s nice to see Bradley has already received an early in-form in this year’s installment.”

Are there any players who you think are deserving of an upgrade to match their real life attributes and why?

“If you talked to the New York Red Bulls players I’m sure most the guys would say they deserve better card stats! The MLS isn’t known to be rewarded as a league by EA.

“Considering Tyler Adams is on the USA National Team and his standout performance on the New York Red Bulls I think a 72 overall is a bit low for his rating. I also disagree with a 45 shooting and a 61 passing for a central midfielder.”

Is there one player you’ve built your squad around or a general area of focus?

“Currently I would say my squad is built with balance. We defend by using the size and athleticism of the players as a major advantage in the majority of match-ups on the pitch.

“When attacking I’ve put together a more agile squad to maximise the small gaps of space on the pitch with the likes of a Modric, [Quincy] Promes, and Messi. Bale is used a bit more direct, and sneaks into back post crosses well as an aerial threat.”

Finally, what was your reason behind opting for the 4-2-3-1 formation? Have you found that’s the best in the game or just suits your personal style?

“I’m still testing out multiple formations, but I like the support you get from the 4-2-3-1. It’s a classic formation that offers easier control when attacking and defending. You can dictate the pace of the match well, which is easier said than done in FIFA 19.”

The Gunners are chasing down continental glory once more, although their cause has not been helped by a couple of lengthy trips to Eastern Europe

Nacho Monreal claims Arsenal have landed “the worst teams” in their Europa League draw, but is still convinced that continental glory can be secured.

The Gunners, who reached the semi-final stage of the competition last season before coming unstuck against Atletico Madrid, are back in the hunt for major silverware.

A positive opening has been enjoyed to their European endeavours, with Vorskla Poltava swept aside 4-2 at Emirates Stadium in their first group stage outing.

Unai Emery’s side do, however, have a return date in Ukraine to come this term, while they are currently taking in a 5,000-mile round trip to Baku after also being paired with Qarabag.

Monreal said of the challenges facing Arsenal on the road: “These were the worst teams in the draw, we have two long trips to Azerbaijan and Ukraine.

“But it is not an excuse not to go there, play a good game, good football and get the three points.”

Having fallen agonisingly short in the 2017-18 Europa League, Monreal is determined to go a few steps further this year.

He sees no reason why Arsenal cannot get back on the trophy trail, while also chasing down a route into Champions League competition through their efforts in the Premier League.

The Spanish defender added: “We missed a really good opportunity to win the Europa League.

“We would have qualified automatically for the Champions League and that was our target.

“This season, we start from the beginning of the competition, so we are going to try to qualify again for the Champions League through the Premier League, but we know we have the option to win the Europa League and qualify there.

“It is a good competition. We want to play, we want to fight until the end. Why not win the Europa League?”

After returning from Azerbaijan, Arsenal will head into the next international break on the back of a domestic derby date with Fulham on Sunday.

Playing against the European champions is tough in any situation, but Machin may have unwittingly passed on the secrets to some of his tactics

Real Madrid coach Julen Lopetegui has already got a head start over Sevilla boss Pablo Machin ahead of their clash on Wednesday night.

Lopetegui will hope he knows exactly what he is coming up against at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan as Machin disclosed one of his tactics to his opposite number in a meeting seven months ago.

The former Spain boss was in preparation mode heading into the World Cup and wanted to know how to counter the three-at-the-back system which teams such as eventual semi-finalists Belgium and England would be using at the tournament.

He enlisted help from Machin, who had been using three defenders to great effect at Girona last season as he led them to an eventual 10th-place finish in La Liga.

Lopetegui attended the Liga fixture between Girona and Celta Vigo in February, and took the opportunity to meet up with Machin.

In addition to gaining insight on how to play against teams operating with three at the back, Lopetegui also sought to understand its implementation for his own purposes. It is why he named eight defenders in his squad for the World Cup before he was sacked on the eve of Spain’s opening game following the announcement of his appointment as Madrid coach.

Lopetegui will now be able to use his knowledge of the tactic and utilise the counter measures he was taught in the meeting with Machin, potentially giving Los Blancos a distinct advantage heading into the Sevilla game.

Machin, who took over at Sevilla in the summer, realises that it may now be a battle to get the better of a man who knows some of his secrets.

“Who would have said that, in the following season, we would be facing each other, with me at Sevilla and he at Madrid,” said Machin.

“I think we both would have signed up to it (if Machin and Lopetegui had been offered the chance to coach Sevilla and Madrid, respectively).

“I gave my point of view on this system, but ideas and theories are one thing, reality is another.”

However, Machin has faith in his squad, adding it is still down to the players to win or lose the game.

“We can’t forget that the protagonists are the players and their qualities are what make you win or lose,” he added. “Coaches help, but those who score goals or save them are key.”

It would come as a massive shock if Machin ditched his system for the Madrid game, but it remains to be seen how well Lopetegui took notes on how to break down this Sevilla side who rarely take a beating at home.

Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg in New York earlier this month. The Boeing board has voted to take away his job as chairman so he can focus on fixing 737 Max jets which are all grounded after two fatal crashes.

With the company under intense scrutiny in investigations into two deadly plane crashes, Boeing’s board of directors has stripped CEO Dennis Muilenburg of his dual role as company chairman.

In a statement on Friday, the Chicago-based aerospace giant says it has separated the top two roles so that chief executive Muilenburg can “focus full-time on running the company as it works to return the 737 Max safely to service, ensure full support to Boeing’s customers around the world, and implement changes to sharpen Boeing’s focus on product and services safety.”

The same company news release quotes newly elected chairman David Calhoun as saying, “The board has full confidence in Dennis as CEO and believes this division of labor will enable maximum focus on running the business with the board playing an active oversight role.”

The news comes the same day a report from a panel of international safety experts criticizes Boeing for making faulty assumptions when designing the 737 Max and for failing to disclose critical information about a flight control system to pilots and regulators.

Investigators say that in crashes in Indonesia last year and in Ethiopia in March, shortly after takeoff, the flight control system repeatedly forced the planes into uncontrollable nose dives. The two crashes killed a total of 346 people.

Friday’s report and others also take aim at Boeing’s corporate culture which some critics say emphasizes profit over safety, as some employees in safety oversight roles complained of “undue pressure” to accelerate the development and certification of the 737 Max while keeping costs down.

In recent weeks, some aerospace industry analysts have called for Muilenburg’s ouster.

“The 737 MAX will end up years from now as a Harvard Business School case study in mismanagement, and the buck stops with the CEO,” analyst Earnest Arvai at AirInsight wrote last week.

Leeham.net analyst Bjorn Fehrm said that it is “time to start to criticize Boeing’s business culture and to look at the board and the top management.”

A nonpartisan group of lawmakers reached a broad agreement on Wednesday to offer family members of former leprosy patients up to ¥1.8 million in compensation per person.

The agreement came after a district court in June ordered the state to pay between ¥300,000 and ¥1.3 million per person to 541 of the 561 plaintiffs, to compensate for the discrimination suffered by relatives of former leprosy patients.

The lawmakers agreed that the relief measure will cover all plaintiffs, including the 20 people judged by the court to be ineligible for the compensation. The plaintiffs who died after filing the lawsuit will also be covered by the payments.

The group of lawmakers plans to submit a relevant bill to the ongoing extraordinary session of the Diet.

The preamble of the legislation will ask the Diet and the government to clarify where the responsibility lies for the discrimination.

The court ruling was finalized after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in July declined to issue an appeal.

Trade minister Isshu Sugawara came under pressure Thursday after a weekly magazine reported that his secretary offered condolence money in a possible violation of the country’s election laws.

Both ruling and opposition party lawmakers stepped up calls for Sugawara, who only assumed his Cabinet post in September, to address the allegations reported by the Shukan Bunshun weekly magazine.

“If the report is true, it constitutes a clear violation of the Public Offices Election Law. We’d like to urge him to demonstrate his accountability,” Kazuhiro Haraguchi, the Diet affairs chief of the Democratic Party for the People, told a news conference.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said the minister “should explain it as necessary,” without elaborating.

According to the magazine, Sugawara’s secretary offered ¥20,000 in condolence money to the bereaved family of a supporter in his Tokyo district in mid-October. His office also sent funeral flowers to multiple bereaved families this year, the magazine reported.

The law bans politicians from making donations to voters in their home districts. Politicians are, however, allowed to offer money personally at ceremonies such as weddings and funerals.

There are growing calls in the ruling coalition of the Liberal Democratic Party and Komeito for Sugawara to swiftly explain what happened.

“If he didn’t abide by the law, we can’t defend him,” a senior Komeito lawmaker said.

Speaking to reporters Thursday evening, Sugawara said he will seek to explain the matter Friday during a Diet session.

The report could come as a headache for Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who has entrusted Sugawara with overseeing trade and industrial policies.

When a massive typhoon ripped through Japan earlier this month, several homeless people were denied access to shelters or emergency assistance, raising concerns about how local governments respond during natural disasters when society’s most vulnerable are in peril.

In Tokyo’s Taito Ward on Oct. 12, the night Typhoon Hagibis struck the capital, three homeless people were turned away from a shelter because they could not provide proof of a fixed address, with one claiming to be from Hokkaido.

The ward’s government said its shelters are only for residents, but it is reviewing processes to see how it can respond to the needs of the homeless.

When asked about the incident in the Diet, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said that it should not have happened and all people must be afforded access to evacuation shelters.

Takanori Fujita, who represents a nonprofit group that supports people living in poverty, said the issue is reflective of Japanese society in general.

Denying shelter to homeless people “reflects society’s discriminatory view that they do not deserve public services even at the time of a disaster,” said Fujita.

Fujita said there were similar cases of homeless people being denied shelter at the time of the massive earthquake and tsunami that devastated northeastern Japan in March 2011.

Although not one of those refused access to a shelter, the likely drowning death of a homeless man in Tokyo shows the potential ramifications of such decisions.

The homeless man, identified only as Otonashi, was confirmed to have died when his body was discovered in the Tama River in the city of Hino, western Tokyo, on Oct. 14, two days after Typhoon Hagibis hit the capital and other areas.

According to people who knew him, Otonashi was in his 70s and had lived near where his body was discovered for more than 10 years.

Seiichi Aruga, a 60-year-old Hino assembly member who has been involved in volunteer food-distribution activities supporting the homeless for about two years, knew him.

“(Otonashi) picked up newspapers and magazines on the street to read. He was knowledgeable about a range of issues and liked to have discussions,” he said.

A 54-year-old homeless man who lives near where Otonashi slept said Otonashi had not given up on returning to a more socially acceptable way of life.

“I’d like to return to society someday (but) I cannot forgive society’s discrimination,” the homeless man recounted Otonashi as telling him.

On the night of Oct. 12, a 56-year-old homeless man was taking shelter at the entrance of East Japan Railway’s Ueno Station in Taito Ward.

A concert hall in front of the station entrance had been turned into an evacuation center for foreign tourists and non-Taito Ward residents, but the man said he did not know about it, as he had no access to public service information.

After it stopped raining that night, the man walked back to an area near the Sumida River, about 2 kilometers away, where he usually sleeps.

When he woke up in the morning, his fate could have been the same as Otonashi’s, as he had to walk through knee-deep water to get to higher ground. He said he sustained a cut to his leg when he encountered broken glass beneath the water.

According to a government survey in January this year, more than 4,500 people sleep rough around the country. About a third of those live close to rivers, often in lightly wooded areas, and are vulnerable to flooding, the survey found.

On the night of the storm, the Hino Municipal Government called on its citizens to evacuate using an emergency radio system for disaster prevention but did not take any special measures for the homeless.

But some areas are responding to their homeless residents’ needs.

Tokyo’s Setagaya Ward, through which the Tama River also flows, opened an evacuation center near the river and urged homeless people nearby to take shelter on the night Typhoon Hagibis landed on the main island of Honshu.

But even measures like those implemented by Setagaya Ward are not enough, says Fujita.

“There are many people who have been repeatedly turned away (in the past) and stopped seeking help,” Fujita said. “Unless discrimination in everyday life is eliminated, nothing changes in times of emergency.”

The Premier League has proposed a schedule that will see games played nine days before and eight days after the start and end of the 2022 World Cup.

The 2022 World Cup will be held in Qatar in November and December to avoid the country’s searing heat.

That poses an obvious problem for all major European leagues, which generally run from August through to May.

The Daily Mail say initial Premier League plans will temporarily scrap the two-week winter break and see fixtures played on November 12, with the World Cup commencing on November 21.

The top flight and Championship will then return on Boxing Day, eight days after the World Cup final, to ‘minimise disruption’.

‘To allow for the extra time needed, the domestic season for the top two tiers would kick off a week earlier and end a week later,’ it is added.

The schedule is expected to ’cause ructions with clubs’ as countries will want players to report for pre-tournament training while the leagues are in play, although the Mail do say ‘the response was said to be positive’ when clubs were told of the plans.

It is likely to leave them without international players for a lengthy period to aid first preparation and then recovery, with talks to be held in November.

 

Jurgen Klopp has explained his decision to start James Milner instead of Joe Gomez at right-back against Genk.

Liverpool made a few changes to the side that drew with Manchester United for their trip to Belgium on Wednesday.

With Trent Alexander-Arnold unavailable, Milner started at right-back over Gomez, while Klopp chose an incredibly adventurous midfield.

Liverpool’s insipid performance in the United draw went some way to explaining the second call, but Klopp himself sought to clarify the first.

 

“I don’t see it as though I picked James over Joe,” he said. “I only picked Millie.

“Trent, we found out on Tuesday morning that he had become ill. It wasn’t a lot of time for us and we wanted to change as little as possible.

“In the way we wanted to play, Millie was the clear number one solution for that moment.

“But after 15 minutes already it was clear that we had to try to change a bit again.

“Joe did really well when he came on, he looked confident and clear. It was good. It was nothing against Joe.”

 

Unai Emery says Nicolas Pepe and Dani Ceballos need the same period of “adaptation” that “amazing” former Arsenal target Fabinho experienced at Liverpool.

Pepe has faced intense criticism since his club-record £72m move from Lille in the summer.

The winger has scored just one goal – a penalty – with three assists in 11 games.

His most recent match included a shocking miss against Sheffield United, and a subsequent media overreaction, but Emery has played down fears over both his and Ceballos’ development by pointing out that Fabinho benefited from “patience” at Anfield.

 

“We spent money with Pepe, but Pepe needs time to adapt to the Premier League,” he said.

“For example, in France I loved a lot Fabinho. He was in Monaco and I wanted to sign him for Paris St Germain.

“When I arrived here, also his name was on the table to achieve to sign him, but he signed for Liverpool.

“The first six months he didn’t play, it was adaptation. But now he is amazing and I want the same with (Dani) Ceballos, with Pepe.

“We need patience, but Pepe is improving. On Monday, the key to win was with him. If he scores the first goal, it’s different.

“But it’s one process and I believe in him and I know we need time and patience. The supporters have patience, some more than others.”
