Despite warming ties, 85% of Japanese still hold ‘unfavorable’ view of China

BEIJING – Japanese public impressions of China remain “unfavorable,” an annual survey showed Thursday, amid a lingering territorial dispute, a U.S.-China trade war and unrest in Hong Kong.

The survey, conducted by the Japanese nonprofit think tank Genron NPO and the China International Publishing Group, found that 84.7 percent of Japanese respondents have an “unfavorable” impression of China, down 1.6 percentage points from a year earlier.

The survey was conducted amid a recent thaw in Sino-Japanese ties that had previously grown frosty over wartime history and territory.

The Asian neighbors say that bilateral relations have returned to a “normal track,” and the two sides are preparing for Chinese President Xi Jinping’s first state visit to Japan next spring.

But that contrasts with the opinion of the Japanese public, with a 5.8 percentage point increase to 44.8 percent among those who believe the current status of bilateral ties is “bad” or “relatively bad,” with a “lack of trust between governments” cited as one of the primary reasons.

Yasushi Kudo, the head of the think tank, explained that “although the Japanese government has begun to strengthen relations with China and began exchanges with its leaders, the purpose and future vision of this has not been explained to the Japanese people.”

Furthermore, Japanese news outlets, from where the majority of the respondents said that they receive information about China, “aired discussions of economic conflict between the United States and China and violent images of anti-Beijing protests in Hong Kong on a daily basis” during the surveying month of September, Kudo wrote in an analysis.

Despite the two governments’ pledges to make efforts to build a “new era” in Sino-Japanese ties, the survey results indicate that the Japanese public’s impressions of China have been negatively influenced by those major issues.

Since June there have been protests almost every weekend in Hong Kong, many turning violent, which were initially triggered by a now-withdrawn extradition bill that would have allowed Hong Kong citizens to be sent to mainland China for trial.

Indeed, there was a noticeable rise in those who cited China’s “one-party rule by the Communist Party” and “entrenched nationalism of the Chinese people” as a reason for their “unfavorable” impression of the country, amounting to 43 percent and 8.3 percent of respondents respectively.

While “continuing territorial issues over the Senkaku Islands and Japanese water/airspace” remained the most cited reason, 12.2 percent named China’s “incomprehensible response to the China-U.S. trade war” as a reason for an “unfavorable” impression.

In contrast, “favorable” Chinese public impressions of Japan were at their highest level since the joint survey began in 2005. Chinese respondents of that view rose to 45.9 percent, nearly 40 points higher than in 2013 when the two governments came to loggerheads over the Senkaku Islands, administered by Japan but claimed by China.

Kudo believes a rapid rise in the number of Chinese citizens traveling to Japan, as well as an increased use of social media services, are major factors for the improvement.

The survey found that the majority of Chinese respondents who have traveled to Japan had a “favorable” impression of the country, whereas the majority of those who had not been to Japan had an “unfavorable” impression.

The survey was conducted in September and valid responses were collected from 1,000 people in Japan and 1,597 in China age 18 or older.

Report reveals seven other candidates to succeed Wenger at Arsenal

A report has revealed the other seven managerial candidates that Arsenal considered replacing Arsene Wenger with.

Unai Emery was the man selected in 2018 to take the Gunners forward after the end of an era under Wenger that spanned 22 years.

Wenger won the Premier League title three times – triumphing in 1998, 2002 and 2004 –  while in north London, as well as seven FA Cups and seven Community Shields.

Emery was criticised recently after his side lost their Premier League game away to Sheffield United last Monday before they threw away a two-goal lead at home to Crystal Palace yesterday.

The loss to the Blades was just a second defeat of the season across all competitions for the Gunners, but Emery’s pragmatic approach to games has seen some supporters turn against him.

The 47-year-old came up painfully short of securing a return to the Champions League at the end of his first season and they are currently fifth in the Premier League, four points off fourth-placed Chelsea.

Following their disappointing draw against Palace, The Athletic says Emery was the ‘unanimous choice’ when the Arsenal board selected him as Wenger’s successor last year.

The report adds that he was one of eight candidates with the others being ‘Massimiliano Allegri, Mikel Arteta, Thierry Henry, Julen Lopetegui, Ralf Rangnick, Jorge Sampaoli and Patrick Vieira.’

The Athletic continued: ‘Arsenal additionally discussed Antonio Conte, Eddie Howe, Maurizio Sarri and Brendan Rodgers — but for differing reasons they were not pursued, while Luis Enrique was never an option.’

Keane labels two Tottenham players as ‘Dumb and Dumber’

Roy Keane has labeled Danny Rose and Serge Aurier “Dumb and Dumber” after Tottenham’s 2-1 loss to Liverpool at Anfield.

Harry Kane silenced Anfield inside the opening minute by nodding home from close range after Son Heung-min’s deflected shot came back off a post.

Spurs had goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga to thank for reaching half-time in the lead but they should have gone further ahead early in the second when Son rounded Alisson but could only hit the crossbar from a tight angle.

And Liverpool soon equalised as Jordan Henderson’s deflected effort finally found a way past Gazzaniga before Aurier’s clumsy foul on Sadio Mane allowed Mohamed Salah to score from the spot.

And Keane picked out Aurier and fellow full-back Rose, who were run ragged all match, for criticism.

“The two Tottenham full-backs were dreadful. Dumb and Dumber, I’d call them,” Keane told Sky Sports. “I thought they were really poor. You can’t compare them to Liverpool, the two lads who are absolutely fantastic.

“Particularly going forward, okay defensively there’s parts of the games they can improve on, but going forward they’re absolutely fantastic.”

Emery: Xhaka ‘wrong’ to react angrily to Arsenal boos

Arsenal manager Unai Emery says Granit Xhaka was “wrong” to react angrily at the Arsenal fans reaction to his substitution against Crystal Palace.

The Gunners gave up a two goal lead to draw 2-2 with Crystal Palace in a game marred by VAR controversy.

The Swiss appeared to shout “f*** off” after being booed by the Arsenal fans, before taking off his shirt, walking past Emery and storming down the tunnel.

“He’s wrong but we are going to speak inside about that situation,” Emery told BBC Match of the Day.

The Arsenal boss added: “I want to be calm but, really, he was wrong in this action.”

News of the change was first greeted with ironic cheers which turned to boos as Xhaka took his time to leave the field, sparking an angry reaction from the 27-year-old.

It is not the first time Xhaka has been booed this season, but the uneasy relationship with the Gunners fans did not stop Emery appointing Xhaka as club captain in September after the summer departure of Laurent Koscielny.

'Pellegrini not working with quality he is used to at West Ham'

Pablo Zabaleta insists that the Hammers manager can turn it around, though he accepts the club has a lack of quality

Pablo Zabaleta admits West Ham must improve if they are to avoid relegation this season, though he accepts that Manuel Pellegrini is not working with the quality he is used to.

The Hammers have lost all four of their Premier League games thus far this campaign, and endured a disappointing collapse against Wolves last time out, losing 1-0 in the final minute.

Reports have subsequently claimed that Pellegrini could be sacked, but it is understood that the cost of axing him would prove prohibitive, the Chilean having agreed a deal worth around £7 million ($9m).

The Hammers appointed Pellegrini due to his history of playing expansive, attractive football, having won the Premier League at Manchester City.

Zabaleta accepts that results thus far have not been up to scratch, but he has backed the Chilean to turn things around, despite working with a sub-par group of players, compared to the squad he had at his disposal at the Etihad Stadium.

“For the first time maybe he doesn’t have the same quality in the team like he had before. So maybe it’ll take more time than at other clubs for him to get everything right,” the right-back, who spent three years at City under Pellegrini, added.

“At Manchester City, there was so much quality, we won games easily. Here it’s not the same. But he’s a great man, a good manager and will try to find the best way to get the results.”

West Ham also struggled to get going last season, winning only one of their opening six matches, but they eventually finished 13th.

“It’s similar to last season when we didn’t start well and it was tough but we don’t want that. We’ve seen good teams going down before so we must fight,” Zabaleta added.

“We’ve got the quality in the team but the players need to put in good performances… you trust in the way he (Pellegrini) works because of the teams he’s worked with before.”

West Ham return to action against Everton after the international break, before a clash with Chelsea.

Tim Cahill backs Usain Bolt's A-League experiment

The former Socceroo believes football fans should be positive about the athlete’s trial

Socceroos legend Tim Cahill has urged perspective on Usain Bolt’s A-League experiment, saying the trial should be supported until the Jamaican star is fully fit.

Bolt looked off the pace and appeared to struggle with his aerobic fitness during his debut for Central Coast Mariners in a friendly against a select XI last Friday night – a match which attracted an extraordinary crowd just shy of 10,000.

Speaking during a press conference to announce his farewell Socceroos match against Lebanon in November, Cahill pleaded for critics to be positive about Bolt’s adventure Down Under.

“Usain Bolt is a special case – you have a world commercial class athlete that is probably the biggest faces on planet earth trying to play football – let’s embrace that,” Cahill said.

“Let’s not put too much negativity on the A-League for giving someone a chance.”

Mariners coach Mike Mulvey says the club will give the sprint king 12 months to prove he deserves a professional contract.

However, Bolt believes his fitness will peak in four months time and he will have a deal secured before that point.

Cahill lauded the eight-time Olympic gold medallist for his honesty and cited the intense interest around the trial as reason to back it.

“If Usain Bolt admits he is going to be ready in four months, at least he is being honest,” he said.

“It’s key we put this [experiment] in a special box and take it for what it is.”

Bolt’s next scheduled match is a friendly against NSW NPL club Wollongong Wolves at WIN Stadium on October 6.

Pereira leaves Lukaku frustrated with Belgium snub

The Manchester United midfielder has made the Brazil squad despite a club colleague trying to talk him into representing another set of Red Devils

Andreas Pereira has made the Brazil squad for the first time, with the Manchester United star revealing that he has left club colleague Romelu Lukaku frustrated with his snub of Belgium.

The 22-year-old was born in Duffel and represented the land of his birth at youth level up to U17.

He has, however, switched allegiance to the homeland of his father, with Brazil represented within their U20 and U23 set-ups.

Pereira is now in line for a senior debut with the Selecaco, having been called up for friendly dates with the United States and El Salvador.

He remains convinced that he has made the right international decision, despite Old Trafford team-mate Lukaku trying to talk him round to a different way of thinking.

Pereira told Globo Esporte: “He tried to convince me.

“He spoke to me: ‘You have to play for Belgium’. He came to talk to me, he’s always talking to me.

“I told him ‘it’s difficult, Lukaku, can’t do it, it’s not the same. Playing for Belgium is something else. Playing for Selecao… It’s Brazil, I feel at home’.

“Then he said: ‘If that’s the way it is, you have to follow your heart’. And then he respected my decision.”

Pereira saw his commitment to the Brazil cause tested over the summer when Tite’s team faced Belgium at the quarter-final stage of the 2018 World Cup – with the Red Devils running out 2-1 winners.

“It was complicated,” said a man who started the 2018-19 Premier League season inside Jose Mourinho’s starting XI at United.

“I was in Belgium watching and it was difficult to see Brazil lose. Everybody messing with me. Wow, it was… I was very angry.

“My friend, I have a friend from Belgium, I was watching with him. I couldn’t do it, I left the room, I was very… I got very mad.

“And they all messed, my father’s friends saying ‘wow, look at Brazil there, you have to choose Belgium, you have to choose Belgium’.

“I said, ‘wow, I can’t do it, I can’t do it’.”

‘It’s not me who’s talking’ – Pogba fed up with Man Utd transfer speculation

The 25-year-old says that there will “always be talk” about his future but is insistent that he remains focused on football

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba says that he is tired of transfer rumours linking him with a move away from Old Trafford.

A target for Barcelona in the summer, the World Cup winner seemed to add fuel to the fire when he was quoted saying by Sky Sports Germany on Thursday as saying “who knows what will happen in the near future”.

Pogba, however, is insistent that he does not see himself anywhere other than with the Red Devils, despite reports of a rift between him and manager Jose Mourinho.

“It’s not me who’s talking,” he said.

“I’m trying to work on myself physically. I got back late from the World Cup, so I’m trying to perform as well as possible.

“I’m just trying to do my job and for the rest there’ll always be talk.”

The 25-year-old has been an ever-present in the headlines since moving back to United from Juventus in the summer of 2016 but his performances have come under particular scrutiny in recent times.

Club legend Peter Schmeichel has questioned his mentality, while former England striker Ian Wright has suggested that winning the World Cup in the summer will only enhance the player’s ego, potentially harming his tempestuous relationship with his manager still further.

He was in action on Thursday with France, with whom he turned in a relatively uneventful performance as they played out a 0-0 Nations League draw with Germany in Munich.

On Sunday he is again expected to turn out for Les Bleus when they return to competitive action for the first time on home soil following Russia 2018 with a home match against the Netherlands.

From there, Pogba will return back to United, who have won only two of their opening four Premier League fixtures of the season. A match against Watford away from home awaits before a trip to face Swiss outfit Young Boys in the Champions League.

Pogba has captained the Red Devils in their competitive games this season, though he missed a penalty as they defeated Burnley at Turf Moor immediately before the international break.

Shaw: Mourinho never wanted to sell me despite Man Utd frustration

The Red Devils left-back has worked his way back into favour at club level, with his performances quietening exit talk and earning an England recall

Luke Shaw believes Jose Mourinho has never wanted to sell him at Manchester United, but admits he has left his manager frustrated at times.

The 23-year-old left-back has seen his future at Old Trafford called into question on a regular basis over recent years, with each passing transfer window bringing a fresh round of rumours.

He has been able to see off the speculation and enjoyed a welcome return to form in 2018-19 after working hard to recover peak fitness.

Shaw’s efforts have earned praise from Mourinho and a recall to the England squad, with the highly-rated defender convinced that he was always going to be given time to get things right.

He told reporters ahead of a potential return to the Three Lions side in a friendly clash with Spain on Saturday: “He [Mourinho] put his trust in me at the start of the season. I think at times if he didn’t trust me it would’ve been easy for him to say he wanted to sell me.

“I think he always believed in me and I always believed in myself and just needed to get back to what I needed to do. He’s played a big part but I’ve done a lot too to get back into his team and earn his trust back.”

Shaw added on a battle to prove his worth to Mourinho: “It’s been a tough two years but mentally it’s made me stronger and made me want to prove to him that I can do what sometimes in the last couple of seasons he said I couldn’t.

“I’m feeling positive and feeling good and focused on what’s to come.

“I think at times he got frustrated with me because he knew I could do better. Maybe he was right but I don’t want to keep focusing on that.

“We had a chat before the season and he said he wanted me to stay. That motivated me a lot and obviously I’ve come back and played games in pre-season and got my fitness fully and everything is good.”

Shaw’s return to prominence has helped to solve United’s issues in a problematic position, with the likes of Matteo Darmian and Ashley Young having been used as makeshift left-backs in recent seasons.

The former Southampton man said of the challenges he has faced: “I’ve always believed in myself. I’ve had hard times but to be the best, you’ve got to be professional.

“That’s what I’ve learnt and especially from the staff at Manchester United, I’ve learnt a lot.

“I just need to look forward now, keep professional, keep training hard, keep improving myself as a player, keep doing what I’m doing at the moment.”

Filipe Luis: I asked for PSG move but Atletico Madrid lied about me

The 33-year-old has admitted that there was something of a dispute this summer, but it was rapidly defused

Atletico Madrid defender Filipe Luis admits that he wanted to discuss a move to Paris Saint-Germain this summer but says that the club went out of their way to “make his image worse”.

The Brazil international was one of the players that PSG chased this summer in order to solve their left-back problem, before eventually settling upon Juan Bernat.

The former Chelsea player was left frustrated, however, that he was not able to at least discuss terms with the Ligue 1 side.

“There was a chance to go to PSG,” he admitted to Globoesporte. “I spoke to Atletico and asked them to let me go, just as they had released Gabi [who moved to Al Sadd] recently. The club said that it wasn’t the same situation, despite similar periods of time remaining on our contracts.

“In my situation there was little time before the window closed and finding a replacement would have been difficult. When they said they did not want me to leave and they set a price that was not going to be paid, I accepted.

“They said that I tried to force a move, but it’s a lie. I’ve got history with Atletico and it made me sad. They tried to make my image worse at the club.”

However, he said that the situation has already been defused.

“I’m in my eighth season with Atletico and I’ve played more than 300 games. I will not tarnish my legacy,” he added.

The Brazilian has enjoyed several notable successes with Atleti, picking up two Europa League titles and the Spanish crown of 2013-14.
