Pochettino: Lloris injury had ’emotional impact’ on Spurs

Mauricio Pochettino thinks Hugo Lloris’ horrific arm injury had an “emotional impact” on the Tottenham players in their 3-0 loss to Brighton.

Lloris dropped the ball on the goal line and hurt himself in the process in only the third minute, allowing Neal Maupay to open the scoring, and it only got worse after that as Aaron Connolly’s double gave the impressive Seagulls a deserved three points.

As good as the hosts were, this must go down as one of the worst performances of Pochettino’s reign and, following on from Tuesday’s 7-2 Champions League humiliation to Bayern Munich, the dark clouds are mounting over the club.

Pochettino told BT Sport: “Hugo Lloris’ injury had massive impact on the game. It was so early in the game. To concede so early and losing our captain it had an emotional impact on the team. We tried to find solutions, a different way to play but it was impossible. It’s a very difficult moment.

“I want to say thank you to the fans, it was a big effort to the fans and we put out that performance. We were at the top together but now we need to get more. It is not easy.”

On how to progress: “After five and a half years this is the first tough time we are having. There is a feeling that this is not good at the minute. We are feeling the emotion. I want to keep working hard and believing.

“I hope the pressure is coming to me and leaves the pressure off the players. Now is a moment to be strong. We cannot underestimate the situation but we need to work. There is always the possibility to make us stronger.”

On Hugo Lloris: “He is in the hospital now. There is no other news at the moment.”

The Hoops will hope to put some daylight between themselves and Rangers as they clash with relegation-threatened opponents at Parkhead

Celtic will hope to remain at the top of the Scottish Premiership when St Mirren visit Parkhead on Wednesday.

The Hoops are being run closer than usual in the title race this season by Steven Gerrard’s Rangers side and Celtic will see this as a chance to improve their goal difference, which is the only thing separating the Old Firm rivals at the moment.

Brendan Rodgers’ team need to recover quickly from their Old Firm derby loss in their last league game and they potentially have the ideal opposition to do it against as St Mirren have won just three times all season.

Celtic need to bounce back from their last league result, a 1-0 loss to Rangers at Ibrox.

The Hoops remain top of the Scottish Premiership with a game in hand on Rangers who are breathing down their necks with only goal difference separating the two sides.

Timothy Weah enjoyed a positive debut in the Scottish Cup against Airdrie, netting as a substitute in the 3-0 win.

Weah could be handed his first start for his new club in this match which is expected to be a routine win for the Scottish champions.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is expecting another game where his team have to break through a side sitting deep for large periods of the match. The Northern Irishman is hoping his team can perform as well as they did against Airdrie at the weekend in their first competitive fixture of 2019.

“We expect a similar game,” said Rodgers. “I am sure Oran will have his team really compact and tight, looking to play on the counter and look to keep it as tight as long as they can.

“We will prepare for a tough game. We started back well at the weekend and we want to continue with that.”

St Mirren earned a draw against Celtic at home earlier this season and they would likely be more than happy with a repeat result here.

Lampard explains new Chelsea role for ‘driver’ Jorginho

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has praised the influence of midfielder Jorginho on and off the pitch and has confirmed that the Italian is the club’s vice-captain.

Jorginho was widely criticised under Maurizio Sarri last season but his fine displays this season are beginning to win over the fans.

Lampard has been hugely impressed with the £52million man and believes he is key to the Blues on the pitch, as well as being an important presence behind the scenes.

Asked if the 27-year-old has now assumed the role of vice-captain, Lampard said: “Yes, Jorginho is vice-captain as it stands.

“Azpi [Azpilicueta] is captain, that was clear at the start of the season, and I think his professionalism and his career here speaks for itself.

“And Jorginho, I keep talking about him as a character, and he’s a driver. I think it’s very evident to see on the pitch. So that’s the situation as it stands.’

On how quickly Jorginho has learnt English, Lampard continued: “It’s obviously important. I think we always try here to push that along as soon as players come in because communication is key, on and off the pitch, in the dressing room.

“He crosses the borders, if there are any. It’s easy to come in and stay within your groups and nationalities, and Jorginho doesn’t. He’s a driver, on and off the pitch.”

Klopp reacts to Marsch’s half-time Liverpool team talk

Jurgen Klopp was bemused by Salzburg manager Jesse Marsch’s filmed half-time team talk during the German side’s 4-3 Champions League loss to Liverpool.

Salzburg came from three goals down to level the scores after half time before Mohamed Salah scored the winner for Liverpool.

It was a brilliant fightback from the Austrian side at Anfield and the video has provided an insight into their dressing room at the interval, but Klopp can’t believe it was filmed in the first place.

He said: “If LFC asked me in that situation, I would leave the club! That is the truth. That is all I have say about that.”

In the video, Marsch told his Salzburg players they were showing the Champions League winners too much respect.

“How many fouls have we got? How many? Maybe two?” Marsch began. “This is not a f*cking friendly! This is a f*cking Champions League match! We need to step up. There is too much respect for the opponent. Too much respect for the opponent!

“That goes for when we have the ball, when we don’t have the ball and for fouls. Too much respect!

“Are they good? Yes, they are good. But we’re playing too nicely, only with a little pressure here and there… There is no real tackle or a fight. They have to feel us, guys. They have to know we’re f*cking here to compete.

Klopp reveals what stopped Liverpool from signing Chilwell

Jurgen Klopp says he didn’t pursue a move for Ben Chilwell as Leicester City refused to let the defender leave the club.

The 22-year-old is now a vital player for both Brendan Rodgers at Leicester and Gareth Southgate with England.

Chilwell was the subject of interest from Klopp’s Liverpool in the summer of 2016 before the then 19-year-old signed a new five-year deal with Leicester, while Brendan Rodgers admitted to trying to sign the left-back during his tenure at Anfield.

On his interest in Chilwell, Klopp – who is preparing his side to face the Foxes on Saturday – told reporters: “Ricardo was a winger first. Chilwell, he was on loan at Huddersfield and Dave Wagner was in my ear pretty much every day, but Leicester didn’t want to let him go.”

Another player Klopp is a big fan of is Chilwell’s Leicester team-mate Jamie Vardy and the German is wary of the threat the England international poses.

Klopp added: “He’s always on your shoulder. He’s good. It’s not his only skill but he wants those situations and gets them. You have to make sure these situations don’t happen that often. But they are much more flexible – it’s not like their first ball is always one in behind.

“It feels like if someone put in a ball behind me, Vardy would be there!”

Howe brushes off ‘pointless’ Wilson to Man Utd rumours

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe will not entertain “pointless” transfer speculation over England striker Callum Wilson.

Wilson has again been rewarded for his consistency with another call-up to Gareth Southgate’s squad for the upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers against the Czech Republic and Bulgaria.

The 27-year-old has scored five Premier League goals so far, and reports have suggested he will be on Manchester United’s wanted list when the transfer window opens again in January.

Howe, though, will not let rumours about what might or might not develop over the coming months as he prepares for Sunday’s trip to Arsenal.

“I take with a pinch of salt, to be honest, at this stage of the season,” Howe said when asked about the reports around Wilson’s future.

“There is nothing that we can do, that Callum can do, other than perform well. That influences rumours and things like that at this stage of the season.

“He has just got to focus on his next game and give his best for this club.

“To hear transfer links and rumours at this stage when the window is shut and a long way from being open, for me, it is pointless talking about it.”

Wilson was signed from Coventry in 2014 and has overcome serious injuries in both knees. Howe feels he again merits continued international recognition.

“It (England call-up) is deserved. I think he has had a good start to the season,” Howe said.

“I think with Callum we have just been focusing on his performances and making sure he delivers what we need for the team.

“On the back of that, we have always said we feel he will score goals if he gets the finer points of his performance right.

“I think he has and now he is in a confident mood – that is a great sign for us and for him.”

Bournemouth head to Arsenal looking to extend their three-match unbeaten run in the league, having drawn 2-2 with West Ham last weekend.

“We are in a good place, but we know from our experience that things can change quickly so we have to be ready,” Howe said.

“I feel that there is more to come. We are doing something right, I think the spirit in the group has been very strong and that is why we have got the results we have.

“If we can improve technically then we can be even stronger.”

The club have seen revised plans for a new training complex agreed by Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council’s planning committee. Howe believes the move is a “huge step”.

“I have been saying for a long time how important this is for the future of the club, for the next generation of the players, it means everything,” he added.

Meanwhile, defender Chris Mepham has withdrawn from the Wales squad because of an unspecified injury.

Model professional Ramsey will be an asset for Cristiano & Co. at Juventus – Parlour

The Gunners legend was full of praise for the departing midfielder, who he believes is still giving his all despite having a move to Serie A lined up

Aaron Ramsey is setting an example in professionalism at Arsenal and will be an asset to Cristiano Ronaldo at Juventus, says Ray Parlour, as the Wales international looks set to move to Turin at the end of the season.

Ramsey has reportedly been offered £300,000 a week to join the Italian champions on a free transfer when his Arsenal contract expires in the summer.

Arsenal boss Unai Emery still called on Ramsey in the 2-0 victory over Chelsea earlier this month when his role marking Blues playmaker Jorginho proved pivotal to the win.

And Parlour, one of Arsenal’s most decorated midfielders, thinks what Ramsey is doing in north London can be replicated in Turin.

“It is very disappointing from an Arsenal perspective,” Parlour told Goal, speaking to promote the #AcceptNoSubstitutes campaign for GOALS, the UK’s leading small-sided football provider. “Arsenal fans would love to have seen him sign but it is also exciting for Ramsey.

“He is going to a different culture and league. Obviously, Juventus have great history in the Champions League. He will be playing with Ronaldo, I wish him all the best. He has been a great servant to the club and I really praise him for the Chelsea performance.

“That’s exactly how you should act when you know you are leaving the club, to give your all for the players and fans. He showed he will play for his shirt until the end of the season. You have to give it all for the fans. He scores some vital goals in big games. His energy is excellent.

“He is decent on the ball, gets about the pitch and he makes good runs. What he has done well for Arsenal is that he makes that run into the back four which allows [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang or [Alexandre] Lacazette to find that little gap. That’s what Ronaldo and company will be getting.

“He gives that space for the opportunity because he takes defenders away. So, that’s what he will bring to the team. Hopefully he will be in the team for Arsenal on Friday (against Manchester United in the FA Cup fourth round) because he deserves to be.

“It is a shame because I would love to see him stay but I am not negotiating his contract. Arsenal want the best deal for themselves, Aaron’s representative wants the best deal for him. In the end they came to this agreement.”

Parlour won 12 major honours as an Arsenal midfielder in what was one of the most successful eras in the club’s history.

The former England international was an energetic player himself and he has been impressed with the signing of the sprightly Matteo Guendouzi.

The 19-year-old is thought to have cost around £7 million ($9m) but he has still been a mainstay in Emery’s side since arriving from the French second division.

“Guendouzi is going to become an excellent player,” he added. “He is only a young lad at 19. It will take him a little bit more time to improve. He has been a brilliant signing already though.

“[Granit] Xhaka is playing better alongside [Lucas] Torreira. I am interested to see what Emery will do with the team selection at the weekend. I think he should stick with the same team apart from [Hector] Bellerin.

“I was around Arsenal in pre-season and Guendouzi was the one who stood out in training. His work rate, he wants to learn and you can see it in him that he has got high standards. It is not just when he plays. He is going to make mistakes and any young man will.

“What I like about him is when he makes a mistake he always still wants the ball. He is always available, which is what you need in midfield and, if he can keep progressing like he has, he will be a great signing for Arsenal – especially because they paid so little for him.”

Meanwhile, Emery has said that Arsenal don’t have the funds to make permanent January signings and will only look to add players on loan, despite the club being valued at around £2.2bn ($2.8bn).

Parlour thinks that the lack of investment means patience is needed in Emery, regardless of his league finish, but believes that his squad can squeeze into the top four and beat Manchester United in the FA Cup on Friday evening.

“The club is always run as a business,” he said. “They are never going to go into a deficit. The owners have got their right to do that. I am sure that Emery would love players to come in, especially in certain positions but he has got to work with the players he has got.

“He is probably disappointed with the lack of players coming in but the financial situation is up to Arsenal to make that decision to sign players or not. We’re not sure if it is going to happen in this window but I am sure in the summer that they will probably have four to five in and four to five out.

“But you have got to be patient [as an Arsenal fan with Emery]. If they got into the top four, keep in mind they are only three points behind, then it will be a brilliant season to come in fourth. You know the quality above them, Man City and Liverpool are on another level.

“There’s some quality and they can do it. They have to believe. It is a team and not individuals that gets you into the top four. Certainly, the cup competitions are going to be important. Against Manchester United and in the Europa League is where they might win things this year.”

‘Arnautovic must be more Mahrez than Payet’ – Transfer rebel warned by former West Ham striker

The Austria international had been hoping to secure a move during the winter window, but has been told to knuckle down and not rock the boat

Marko Arnautovic needs to follow the lead of Riyad Mahrez, not Dimitri Payet, as he seeks to secure a move away from West Ham, says David Connolly.

Having seen interest shown in his services from China, the Austria international had been hoping to be on the move during the winter window.

The Hammers are, however, standing firm and have refused to sanction a lucrative switch at this stage.

Arnautovic is said to be less than impressed at that stance and is threatening to emulate France international Payet, who forced through a transfer away from the London Stadium in 2017 by refusing to play.

Connolly believes that would be the wrong approach for a talented 29-year-old to take, with former Leicester winger Mahrez having shown that wishes can be granted if patience is shown after finally getting himself the chance to head to Manchester City on the back of several transfer requests.

“I don’t think Arnautovic and Payet are exactly the same,” Connolly told Love Sport Radio.

“I don’t think Payet went about it the right way but he was going for sporting reasons. He wanted to go back to France and with Marseille he reached the Europa League final. Arguably, it wasn’t for the money.

“With Arnautovic, he’s obviously not going for sporting reasons.

“Refusing to play is a real negative and [what about] Riyad Mahrez who was in a similar situation? He buckled down, got on and played.

“He sulked for a couple of days but then he was back in among the team. They welcomed him with open arms and he got his move to Man City in the end. That would be the right way to go about it and he might do that.”

West Ham are reluctant to part with Arnautovic as he has been a key man since joining from Stoke in a club-record £20 million deal during the summer of 2017.

Connolly admits he would be a big miss if allowed to leave, with the Hammers needing all the assistance they can get in a bid to secure a top-seven finish.

The former Republic of Ireland international added: “If Arnautovic does go they look really, really light.

“Andy Carroll hasn’t even played 100 games in his five years so you can’t rely on him.

“They were struggling against Burnley until they brought on Mark Noble and [Michail] Antonio who made a difference – then Arnautovic got a couple. I’d be worried if they lost Arnautovic.

“They’ve got technical players – Samir Nasri is a terrific signing for them – and for the first time in a good few years, they’ve given the youngsters a right good chance and they look good enough.

“Whether it’s Xande Silva, Declan Rice or Grady Diangana, they look like they can actually make the grade like Joe Cole and Rio Ferdinand did. I’m not saying they will be that good in the end but they look like they’ve got a right good chance. West Ham always need youngsters, that mix.

“[Manuel] Pellegrini is nearly there. They’re missing [Manuel] Lanzini but the technical way for them suits. But Andy Carroll doesn’t suit that way so, if Arnautovic goes, they’ll need a front man desperately.”

Bale offered no guarantees of Real Madrid game time as he prepares for latest return

The Wales international is back in training and pushing for a recall, but Santiago Solari has made no call on whether he will come straight back in

Gareth Bale has been branded “a fantastic player” by Real Madrid boss Santiago Solari, but he is being offered no guarantees of game time as he prepares to return from injury.

The Wales international is currently preparing to step back into the fold following his latest spell on the sidelines.

He has been out of action since being forced off at half-time during a meeting with Villarreal on January 3.

Six games have been missed by the 29-year-old forward.

Madrid are still hoping that he can provide attacking inspiration this season, with more expected of Bale in the wake of Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure.

Solari is, however, yet to decide who he will call upon for a La Liga clash with Espanyol on Sunday.

He told reporters ahead of that game when asked if Bale will be handed an immediate recall: “Football is always about the next game.

“We will see who plays tomorrow, then the following week.

“The players who are recovering, we want them at 100 per cent as soon as possible.

“Gareth is a very important player for us, a fantastic player, we are very happy to have him coming back.”

Bale has taken in 23 appearances this season, scoring 10 goals.

He has been challenged to offer much more, with former Madrid and Wales boss John Toshack among those looking for him to make minor tweaks to his game and become more productive.

“Cristiano [Ronaldo] plays as a winger, scores and sets up goals for the others,” he told AS.

“There’s no doubt that Gareth is one of the best players of all time.

“If he wants to continue there, he should try and copy what Cristiano does.

“If you look at what he’s achieved, it makes you wonder what he would have done if he hadn’t been so unlucky with injuries.”

Report reveals how Rodgers made Henderson cry at Liverpool

Brendan Rodgers made Jordan Henderson cry and ring his dad while manager at Liverpool, according to a report.

The Leicester City boss sends his side into battle with the Premier League leaders on Saturday having spent more than three years at the helm on the red half of Merseyside earlier in his career.

He will encounter a very different Liverpool this weekend with his successor, Jurgen Klopp, having guided the club to Champions League glory at the end of last season.

And in the build-up to the fixture The Athletic have published the ‘full story of Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool’ and bring us a tale of the Northern Irishman trying to swap Henderson for Clint Dempsey.

James Pearce and Simon Hughes in The Athletic claim:

‘Rodgers happily off-loaded Andy Carroll on loan to West Ham in the belief it would free up funds for him to bring in more firepower. He wanted Clint Dempsey from Fulham but the owners refused to pay £6 million for a 29-year-old who was in the final year of his contract.

Rodgers was prepared to offer Jordan Henderson in a swap deal and informed the midfielder prior to a Europa League clash away to Hearts that he could leave. Henderson went back to his room, shed some tears, rang his dad and vowed to stay and fight and prove Rodgers wrong.

‘Dempsey ended up joining Tottenham instead and to Rodgers’ disgust Liverpool failed to sign anyone. When Borini then broke his foot, Luis Suarez was the club’s only fit striker for half a season.’
