Tuchel thrilled with 'almost perfect' start to life at PSG

Paris Saint-Germain head into 2019 unbeaten in Ligue 1 this season, and their manager is thrilled with their play to this point

Thomas Tuchel believes the first half of his debut season at Paris Saint-Germain has been “almost perfect” as they head into the mid-season break 13 points clear at the Ligue 1 summit.

PSG defeated Nantes 1-0 at the Parc des Princes on Saturday to ensure they retained their unbeaten start to the league season, having dropped just four points in total.

Not only are PSG 13 points ahead of Lille, they also have two games in hand on their closest rivals, in what has been an emphatic beginning for Tuchel in Ligue 1.

But while PSG have been consistently impressive, Tuchel also feels their progress is noticeable.

“When you look at the results, it’s almost perfect,” Tuchel told reporters after Saturday’s game. “I am very, very happy.

“We can see the progress of the team, we can feel the energy of the team. Everyone was very open to new ideas. It was nice.”

Saturday’s game was PSG’s first in Ligue 1 since December 5, as the champions have had two matches postponed due to the ‘gilet jaunes’ demonstrations.

It had been suggested PSG looked tired and lacking in sharpness in what was a rather laboured victory over Nantes, though Tuchel is adamant the team were “amazing”.

“No, I do not think so,” he said when asked if they were tired. “We had 70 per cent possession, we had 40 touches in the opposing area, we had 23 shots… It’s amazing.

“We played with a lot of quality. We do a very aggressive counter-pressing, we just lacked precision in the final touch, in the last pass.

“In my opinion, this is a match we could’ve won by four goals. We controlled the match. We deserved to win.

“We are tired, but that’s normal. The team has been amazing. I compliment my players.”

The club will return to action for a cup match on January 6 but do not have a league match scheduled until six days later against Amiens.

But all eyes at PSG will be on Manchester United as the two have been drawn against each other the last 16 of the Champions League.

Sissoko: I knew I could succeed at Tottenham

The Frenchman has become a key player for Mauricio Pochettino’s side this season and claims he never thought about leaving

Tottenham’s Moussa Sissoko has claimed he never considered leaving the club, despite struggling to make an impact during his first two seasons.

Sissoko joined Tottenham on deadline day in August 2016, having been on the verge of a move to Everton before Spurs secured his signing from Newcastle United for a reported £30 million ($38m).

The midfielder initially failed to cement a place in Mauricio Pochettino’s side and was often criticised by Tottenham’s fans following the big-money move, but he has become a first-team regular this term.

Sissoko has revealed that, despite his struggles, he never considered pushing for a move away from Tottenham.

“The best thing I have done is to be strong mentally.” he told the Guardian.

“I never give up. In life, you never have to go with your head down. You have to look forward, try to improve, keep fighting and one day things will change.

“I never wanted to leave Spurs. I knew that I could have success here.

“I don’t know if the criticism was unfair. Football is like that. It’s why I wasn’t upset by it. I was upset because I wasn’t doing what I wanted to be doing.

“I had to keep working and I believe I can do better than what I am doing now.”

Sissoko signed for Tottenham on the back of an impressive string of performances in France’s run to the final of Euro 2016, but the 29-year-old missed out on Didier Deschamps’ squad for Les Bleus’ triumphant World Cup 2018 campaign.

“I won’t lie and say it wasn’t painful not to be part of the squad,” Sissoko said.

“So it was extra motivation to perform and show I could be in the squad. I played a lot of games with them and then not to be in the World Cup – it was painful.

“But it’s like that. I’m not regretting. It’s gone. You have to accept the manager has made his choice, and I was very happy when they won.”

Klopp hopeful of quick Oxlade-Chamberlain recovery after training return

The England midfielder did some light running this week and could play before the end of the 2018-19 campaign

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is optimistic of welcoming Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain back from injury before the end of the season.

The 25-year-old has not played since undergoing surgery on damaged knee ligaments suffered against Roma in April.

Oxlade-Chamberlain was expected to miss all of the 2018-19 campaign as a result, but he returned to light training on Christmas Eve.

And having shown no adverse reaction, Klopp says some competitive outings this term is not beyond the realms of possibility for the ex-Arsenal man.

“Best news,” said Klopp ahead of the Premier League visit of Arsenal on Saturday. “He started going on pitch and from first step it looked completely normal.

“Sometimes you see players come back and be limping, but from first step Ox looked like Ox. No reaction, which was  even nicer.

“No pressure on him, but it looks like he could be back in normal training in February, late Feb or March and that means he could maybe feature this year.

“Its nice to have him around with a smile on his face. We are obviously really happy with his improvement.”

Though there had been no complications following the surgery, Liverpool had decided not to confirm the full extent of Oxlade-Chamberlain’s injury so not to distract from their Champions League campaign.

The England international played a key role in the Reds reaching the final only to miss out on the showcase against Real Madrid in Kiev.

And though it is still early in his recovery, Klopp is already targeting a Premier League return for Oxlade-Chamberlain.

“It’s a surprise [his rehab],” the German coach added. “It looks really good. Of course it needs time and each little muscle must now adapt to the intensity.

“If you look at the sessions he does outside he looks like he can play tomorrow but of course it is not possible. It’s a boost for the entire dressing room because he is such a big part of that.

“It’s a surprise. He’s ahead of schedule. That’s always good news. We try not to push him too much but we don’t want to hold him back.

“If he makes further steps like he did in the last few weeks he can play Premier League football this season which is nice to know.”

'We hope it's not a big issue' – Worried Pochettino confirms Alli substitution was precautionary

The England midfielder was hurt after a Jordan Pickford challenge in Tottenham’s win at Everton, and his manger faces an anxious wait

Mauricio Pochettino is hopeful Dele Alli avoided serious injury in Tottenham’s Premier League thrashing of Everton on Sunday.

Spurs fought back from a goal down to claim a 6-2 victory at Goodison Park, with Alli and Christian Eriksen scoring once and Harry Kane and Son Heung-min each netting a double.

The result lifts Pochettino’s men to within two points of second-placed Manchester City, but their victory was soured when Alli failed to emerge for the second half following a heavy challenge from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford just before the break.

Pochettino thinks Alli was fatigued from Wednesday’s EFL Cup win over Arsenal and hopes the England star has not suffered anything major.

“He didn’t feel a big problem,” the Spurs boss told Sky Sports.

“Maybe [he was] a little bit tired from Wednesday. I hope it’s not a big issue. It was a precaution.”

Pochettino added at a news conference: “I didn’t see [the challenge]. I am curious to see the action.

“I didn’t want to say because I’ve not seen the video. It was a tough action. We hope it’s not a big issue.”

Spurs host Bournemouth on December 26 and Wolves on December 29, before heading to Cardiff City on New Year’s Day.

They then take on Tranmere Rovers in the FA Cup third round three days later.

'Welcome back' – Solskjaer's return to Man Utd as interim manager a 'great decision'

The Norwegian has been installed as caretaker boss at Old Trafford until the end of the season, with many taking to social media to express their joy

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been named Manchester United’s new manager on a temporary basis and it seems that most fans are happy with the decision.

Jose Mourinho’s successor was swiftly ushered in on Wednesday morning and will take charge of his first game as United head coach against Cardiff City on Saturday evening.

The Portuguese boss was axed two days after the Red Devils suffered a humiliating 3-1 defeat at Anfield at the hands of Liverpool , leaving them 19 points behind their rivals in the Premier League table.

Solskjaer, who played as a striker for the club between 1996 and 2007, has been brought in to lift the mood at Old Trafford quickly and many on social media believe he is the right man to steady the ship.

What is JLingz? Manchester United star Jesse Lingard's new clothing range

The England and Red Devils midfielder is catering to his flair for fashion with the launch of a new line of clothing

Football and fashion have intertwined for years, with clubs cashing in on official merchandise such as kits, training gear and so on, but nowadays players are getting in on the act too.

Some of the game’s biggest stars have branched out into the sartorial world, using their wealth and unmistakeable brand identity to infiltrate what is a highly competitive market.

The likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and David Beckham are probably the most notable examples, but there are plenty of aspiring designers littered throughout football.

Manchester United star Jesse Lingard is one of them and the England international launched his own line of clothing in 2018, called JLingz. Goal brings you everything you need to know about it.

JLingz (sometimes stylised ‘JLINGZ’) is Lingard’s clothing range, which was originally established in the summer of 2018.

The name of the brand is taken from the player’s nickname and the logo is inspired by his unique goal celebration, whereby his two hands are placed together to form his initials, ‘J.L.’

Initially, the JLingz collection was limited to branded caps, t-shirts and hoodies, but it has since expanded to include a wide range of options.

Catering to both men and women, JLingz also offers accessories such as phone cases and aftershave.

Lingard himself and the official JLingz social media channels frequently run competitions giving people the chance to win items of clothing.

However, the Red Devils midfielder’s decision to launch a clothing range has drawn criticism from a number of former United stars, including Roy Keane, Paul Ince and Gary Neville.

“I like Jesse Lingard and I have no problem with him launching a clothes range. But before Liverpool away in the biggest match of the season? Don’t do it this week. Do it before Fulham,” Neville told Sky Sports.

Keane added: “People say you should have other things going on outside of football – I don’t think you should.

“Football should be your number one priority. Focus on the game. Don’t hide behind your cars, your tattoos or your agents. Play the game. You can do all that stuff when you retire.”

Ince, meanwhile, was more scathing, calling into question the player’s status within the game.

“There are plenty of things you can do outside of football, like taking coaching badges, doing a degree, learning a language. You don’t need to make your own clothing brand as though you are one of the best stars in the world. He needs to remember who he is,” Ince wrote in a column for Paddy Power.

“He’s come a long way since he couldn’t get in the Derby side (where he was on loan in the 2014-15 season). Besides, the way he plays, who would want to wear his clothing range anyway?”

The core offerings of the JLingz catalogue are t-shirts, hoodies and caps, but beanies and jogging pants are also available.

A black JLingz Original hoodie will cost £45 and a black JLingz Original t-shirt will set you back £30, while a black JLingz Born 2 Perform cap costs £25.

In December 2018, a new collection was launched, called JLINGZ x Be Yourself. According to the official website, the range is inspired by “the streetwear scene and contemporary fashion to reflect his (Lingard’s) own style.”

Lingard was joined by his United team-mate Marcus Rashford at the launch, as well as those who have helped with the various aspects of the process.

The JLINGZ x Be Yourself range includes bomber jackets and quilted jackets, as well as hoodies, sweatshirts and jogging pants.

The products are slightly more expensive than the Original collection and can be browsed by clicking here.

At the time of writing, JLINGZ clothing can only be bought via its online store, which can be accessed by clicking here.

However, it looks like the Manchester United star would like to open a store in the United Kingdom after canvassing opinion on potential locations through the official Instagram page.

Man City include Man Utd sell-on clause in Brahim Diaz's Real Madrid move

The 18-year-old is set to complete his move to the Spanish capital and the Blues have ensured they will not lose out if he completes a future transfer

Manchester City have included a Manchester United-related sell-on clause in Brahim Diaz’s Real Madrid transfer, Goal has learned.

Brahim, 18, is poised to move to Santiago Bernabeu in a deal worth an initial £15.5 million ($19m), plus £6.5m in add-ons.

City have also agreed a clause with Madrid that entitles them to 15 per cent of any future transfer fee, should the forward sign for another club in the future.

But not every club.

City have also included an agreement whereby they would receive 40% of any future transfer fee… if Brahim were to join Manchester United.

Brahim joined City from Malaga as a 14-year-old and was regarded as one of the club’s academy graduates with the best prospects of making an impact in the first-team.

There is no buy-back clause included in his transfer, but the Blues have ensured they will benefit in some way if the winger goes on to seal a big-money transfer elsewhere.

The Spanish forward would have been out of contract at the Etihad Stadium in the summer, and refused to commit to a new deal with the Premier League club because he did not believe he would get enough first-team opportunities in the coming years.

City made a number of big offers in a bid to retain Brahim’s services, but were unable to convince him that he will play more in first-team football than he will in Madrid.

Despite the Blues’ failure to persuade one of their highest-rated youngsters to stay, they are understood to be happy with the terms of the transfer, and believe many of the additional add-ons, which would take the overall value of the deal above £20m, are achievable.

City will receive more money once Brahim plays a certain amount of games for Madrid, plus an extra instalment if he signs a new contract in the Spanish capital.

Madrid have promised Brahim that he will be part of their first-team plans for the rest of the season, and he could make his debut in the Copa del Rey clash with Leganes next Wednesday.

Brahim’s contribution will be assessed in the summer and a decision will then be made over whether he is sent out on loan or kept in the squad for next season.

Goal revealed on Friday that Brahim’s advisors weighed up the possible impact of Jose Mourinho taking over at the Bernabeu before signing off on the deal.

Sources close to the player do not believe that Mourinho is likely to replace Santi Solari at the end of the season, however, and a final agreement with the Champions League holders was reached at the end of 2018.

'Van Dijk and Salah injuries could derail Liverpool's season'

The Reds are comfortably clear of their title rivals in the Premier League, but their ex-midfielder feels they are a long way from becoming champions

Liverpool’s Premier League title challenge could be put into jeopardy by injuries to Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, according to Reds legend Steve McManaman.

Jurgen Klopp’s side opened up a 10-point lead over Manchester City on Saturday thanks to a 5-1 demolition of Arsenal, with City suffering back-to-back defeats to lose ground on their title rivals. Pep Guardiola has been hit by injuries to some key players and former Liverpool midfielder McManaman is wary that the same thing could happen at Anfield.

“If Liverpool get a bad injury to Van Dijk or to Salah, at the same time, your thoughts start to change,” he told BT Sport.

“Football is one of those things. When they say you have to take it game-by-game, that’s what you have to do. You have to hope everyone stays fit and the best team will win.”

City could reduce the deficit to seven points on Sunday as they take on Southampton at St Mary’s and McManaman still believes that last season’s champions have what it takes to return to the top of the table. The Reds travel to Manchester on Thursday, where their lead over City could be further reduced, leaving the title race wide open once again.

“Of course Liverpool are absolutely flying at the moment but I’d still say Manchester City have got that little bit of an edge,” the 46-year-old admitted.

“They have got them at home next and they have won the league before. I don’t want to put too much pressure on Liverpool. Of course I want Liverpool to win the league, it goes without saying.

“They are frightening at this moment but every year we pick out teams to win the elague, to not win the league, and you fall flat on your face three months later.

“If it’s in April and they’ve got that much point difference, I’m quite happy to shout it from the rooftops but they’ve got a long way to go.”

From their first 20 Premier League games this season, Liverpool have won 54 points. Only two teams in history have had a better return at the same stage, with Man City setting the record last season with 58 points from 20 games.

Aguero and Sane's individual brilliance the difference as Man City reopen title race

Pep Guardiola said this match would be decided in the boxes and on a night of frenzied attacking and defending it was City’s men who came out on top

“Everyone is talking about if we lose, but what happens if we win?” said a defiant Pep Guardiola in the build-up to Thursday’s huge clash. We are about to find out!

Manchester City are alive and kicking and, if we did not have one before, we certainly have a title race now.

Guardiola’s message came as he backed his side to confound those who have seen a dimming on their aura in recent weeks, in the wake of three defeats in four of their games.

City have not been themselves since the start of December and for that reason they came into the game against Liverpool seven points behind their rivals. They come out of it just four points behind, and with plenty of questions answered.

Defeat here would not have spelled the end of City’s title challenge but it would have made things a hell of a lot harder. It would have been a 10-point gap and Liverpool would have had all the momentum, and then some.

But City need not worry about that now, not after this wild night of Premier League action.

Guardiola may have struck a defiant tone in his pre-match press conference but he was more analytical when in front of the TV cameras on Thursday night.

“The boxes,” he said when asked what would define this game. “The plan of both teams will be good. The boxes will make the difference.”

He was bang on the nail – well, almost. There were almost too many goalmouth incidents to mention by the end, not to mention the very first one of the night when John Stones and Ederson almost contrived to put the ball into their own net, only for it to be hooked away from the line in the nick of time. Eleven millimetres the difference between Liverpool taking the lead or not.

And then there are the goals that did go in. Sergio Aguero produced some world-class forward play to fire in the opening goal. The game at Anfield did not have that piece of brilliance and it eventually ended goalless, but Aguero’s divine intervention proved to be the spark this match needed.

City stayed on the front foot and kept up the pace after the break, but a pin-point cross-field pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold found the excellent Andrew Robertson, who gambled in behind Danilo (who himself gambled the ball would go out of play) and provided a cross on a plate for Roberto Firmino.

And yet City came again. No worries about their mentality in the face of set-backs here. That should be remembered, too.

Raheem Sterling picked up a fine ball from Danilo and drove at Liverpool, delaying only to find Leroy Sane, hitherto scrappy and wasteful. This time the German was inch-perfect, striking a low shot into the only available space between Alisson’s hand and the far post.

City should have sealed it after that. Sterling was guilty of his indecision in the area, while Aguero tried to round Alisson and only half managed it.

Mohamed Salah, unusually quiet thanks to City’s fine work, did have one chance but he was denied by Ederson’s fingertip.

Guardiola went potty at the fourth official due to what he deemed to be an unpunished foul in the build-up to that, and not long after Jurgen Klopp exchanged words with the Catalan’s coaches as tempers boiled over both on the pitch and off it.

In among all that City – particularly Stones – did brilliantly to repel the Liverpool onslaught. Guardiola has not seemed to trust much in Kyle Walker or Nicolas Otamendi of late but as Liverpool laid siege to Ederson’s goal he brought on both, essentially for the task of winning headers.

Bernardo Silva and Fernandinho clattered around midfield all night but by this point it was backs against the wall, everybody on the edge of the penalty area.

After the busy fourth-official added on five minutes City’s backline, often accused of not being able to do ‘proper defending’, won a few more headers. Aguero, rather foolishly, tried to chip Alisson from his own half.

But Liverpool could not make their late pressure count, and suddenly we are left to wonder not just what will happen now that City have won, but what will happen now that Liverpool have lost.

After all, this is the first time they have done so all season. Few saw City’s run of poor form coming and maybe there is one around the corner for Liverpool. Maybe there isn’t, but these are the issues they must now contend with, in the midst of their first major set-back of the season.

Captain Vincent Kompany insists he has never seen a better City performance than that, and after seeing the home fans inside the Etihad Stadim greet the final whistle with wild celebrations, you can only imagine what this will do for the club’s belief.

They may still be four points behind Liverpool, but on a night like tonight it feels like “only” four points. City are up and running again.

'This is the best moment' – Sneijder hopeful of Ajax upset against Real Madrid

The Champions League last-16 tie will be a good barometer of the progress made by Erik ten Hag’s young side

Ajax could not be facing Real Madrid at a better time when they meeting the Champions League last-16 next February, according to former playmaker Wesley Sneijder.

Erik ten Hag’s side posses some of the most revered young players in Europe and are enjoying a revival after four successive runners-up finishes in the Eredivisie.

Though they trail leaders PSV Eindhoven by two points they have won their last 11 league games and twice held Bayern Munich in their Champions League group.

Paired with defending champions Real in the first knock-out round of Europe’s premier club competition, the Dutch side are naturally the underdogs but Sneijder is hopeful of an upset.

“For Ajax, this is the best moment to take on Real Madrid,” the ex-Netherlands international, who is currently playing for Qatar side Al Gharafa, told Marca.

“I don’t see Real Madrid as being as strong as in previous years. That’s obvious.

“Ajax are a very young team, but nobody should be mistaken about them as they have a lot of quality and play very well, especially at home in Amsterdam.

“It’ll be a difficult tie for Real Madrid.”

Los Blancos have endured a contrasting campaign, replacing Julen Lopetegui with Santiago Solari after a poor start to the season.

Solari guided Real to the Fifa Club World Cup earlier this month but there remain questions over his long-term future.

Ajax’s last progressed beyond the round-of-16 in the 1995-96, when they beat Real en route to the final – where they lost to Juventus on penalties.

Sneijder, who played in Amsterdam between 2002 and 2007 before moving to the Spanish capital for two seasons, says the two-legged tie will be a decent barometer of progress made by his boyhood club.

“Real Madrid are still the favourites despite everything,” he added.

“But look! If Ajax can achieve a good result in the first leg then Real Madrid could have problems, and we’ve seen that recently when they face teams that keep the ball.

“This is a good matchup to check the quality of this Ajax side, one that is very exciting, as they go up against the three-in-a-row Champions League winners.

“Real Madrid are different in Europe, but Ajax have a chance to move on to the next round.”

“They believe that Ajax are the same as the last few times they visited Madrid. But they’re nothing like those teams.

“Plus, the average Real Madrid fan doesn’t follow Dutch football and doesn’t know about Ajax.

“I do know about them, though, and they have a line-up with a lot of quality.”
