Dembele's early Champions League heroics raise more problems for Barcelona

Recent fine form in front of goal show the Frenchman can succeed, but his indiscipline continues to be an issue for those in charge at Camp Nou

Late for training, but lethal in front of goal. Barcelona are still at a quandary over just what to do with Ousmane Dembele, with directors and fans alike divided over how to deal with the young talent.

Dembele, 21, has had to face up with incessant criticism over the last few weeks thanks to his now-infamous punctuality problems.

As recently as Sunday the ex-Borussia Dortmund man had overslept, arriving to practice 50 minutes late. It was not the first time: on previous occasions he had failed to even show up to training, while famously on November 8 the Frenchman had gone off the grid while his club frantically attempted to track his whereabouts.

Coach Ernesto Valverde acted, banishing him from the squad as punishment, a fate also shared by Arturo Vidal, against Betis. Dembele’s team-mates, meanwhile, showed their willingness to try and rein him in.

“We have to help him understand that football is a 24-hour job which you must experience from the first minute to the last,” Gerard Pique signalled following defeat to Betis. Luis Suarez, no stranger to disciplinary issues himself, also chipped in: “He must be more responsible in some things, look at the more experienced players he has around him.”

While Dembele’s latest transgression hit him in the pocket, in the shape of a €100,000 fine, he was not punished with further exile from the first team. That decision was rewarded on the pitch with a memorable goal to open the scoring against Tottenham on Tuesday, picking up the ball from deep and dancing through the Spurs defence before finishing past Hugo Lloris just seven minutes into proceedings.

For a man accustomed to tardy arrivals, it was an instant response to his detractors. And the goal also promises to mend broken bridges between Dembele and certain fans who feel that he is not showing the commitment and application required of a Blaugrana player.

Valverde, however, gave an ambiguous if light-hearted response to the goal after the final whistle blew on a 1-1 draw against the Londoners. “The Dembele case is not finished,” the coach told reporters from Camp Nou.

“Tomorrow [Wednesday] we are back in training…”

There were no such punctuality problems on Wednesday, as Dembele turned up on time for the post-match session. Those in charge at Camp Nou, however, are also concerned about how quickly their internal strife with the forward has become public knowledge. Having seen Dembele snub two of his previous employers, Rennes and BVB, and go effectively on strike in order to force a transfer, directors are wary of all-out confrontation.

“We knew all about his attitude and that of those around him,” Urbano Ortega, a former member of Barca’s technical staff, admitted to COPE. “Since he is young we thought there would be time to set him straight.”

Dembele’s obvious talents, not to mention his mammoth transfer fee and some €40 million in outstanding payments to Dortmund, have discouraged Barca from selling him on at a loss. But constant discipline problems are beginning to test the patience of those in charge, to the point that they were ready to listen to offers as early as last summer – offers that failed to materialise.

On the pitch, though, Tuesday’s goal might just serve as a turning point. Those stern words heard from team-mates have turned into praise, with the promise of more minutes for a player who has been used sparingly by Valverde as Barca approach the end of the first half of their campaign.

“We should not kill Dembele, we would have to kill him if there is no other choice, which is not the case,” Barca great Andres Iniesta joked in the build-up to the Spurs clash. For now, Barca believe that their wayward talent can still turn himself around. If he cannot, a decision will have to be made whether to accept his failings or remove him from contention.

'Man Utd perfect for De Ligt, Barcelona best for De Jong!'

The young duo have attracted attention from across Europe, but ex-Ajax striker John van Loen believes two clubs in particular stand out

Matthijs de Ligt is made for Manchester United while Frenkie de Jong would fit in perfectly at Barcelona, according to former Ajax star John van Loen.

The two youngsters have been at the forefront of the Dutch giants’ Champions League adventure this season, helping the side to the last 16.

A series of fine performances and a team based on a mixture of youth and experience has drawn comparison with the great Ajax squads of the mid-1990s, while also drawing transfer links with some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

And Van Loen, who lifted the UEFA Cup with the team in 1991-92 and also represented Netherlands at the 1990 World Cup, has tipped the pair to shine at the very top.

“Barcelona is the best place for De Jong because they play football, not kick and rush, and he is good with the ball,” the former striker explained to Goal.

“I think Manchester United is perfect for De Ligt. I hope De Ligt rejects Juventus’ offer – Italian football does not suit him and the Premier league is much better and stronger.”

Ajax now face a formidable challenge in the knock-out stages as they look to continue their Champions League adventure.

Real Madrid, winners of the last three editions, stand between the Amsterdam outfit and the quarter-final; but Van Loen is confident of an upset.

“I think Ajax will beat Real Madrid in the last 16. I know Real Madrid’s players have the experience but I see them every week and they won the Club World Cup against normal teams, not good teams, and Ajax play better,” he added, while also predicting a European champion in 2018-19.

“I think Liverpool will win the Champions League this season. Barcelona and Juventus are not good in the knock-out stages and I do not think they will make it.

“Barcelona and Juventus have special players like Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, but Liverpool have Mohamed Salah and he is good because he has players behind him that do the dirty work for him.

Van Loen added that as well as De Ligt and De Jong, his former employers may have to rebuild next season as they brace themselves for a flurry of outgoing transfer activity.

“I hope nobody else leaves Ajax and the end of the season, but I think Ziyech, Tagliafico, Onana, and Van de Beek could go,” he admitted.

Juventus winger Cuadrado undergoes knee surgery

The Colombian was not expected to need surgery on a knee problem, but the club has now confirmed the winger has had an operation

Juan Cuadrado has undergone surgery on his left knee, Juventus have confirmed.

Cuadrado has been sidelined since he suffered an injury in Juve’s 2-1 Champions League loss away to Young Boys on December 12.

Juve initially indicated the Colombia international would not need an operation, with a conservative treatment plan preferred.

But the Serie A leaders confirmed on Friday that Cuadrado has now undergone “arthroscopic treatment” in Spain.

“The intervention, carried out in Barcelona by Dr Cugat, and assisted by Juventus’ head of medical staff, Dr Claudio Rigo, was perfectly successful,” a club statement said. “The player will begin the recovery process in the next few days.”

No timescale has been given for Cuadrado’s recovery, but, after Saturday’s home league game against Sampdoria, Juve will not be in action again until a Coppa Italia tie at Bologna January 12.

Cuadrado has made 11 Serie A appearances this season, scoring one goal, with Massimiliano Allegri’s side nine points clear of Napoli at the top of the table.

The Colombian originally joined Juventus on loan from Chelsea in 2015 for back-to-back loan stints before moving permanently in 2017.

He’s made 130 total appearances for the club, scoring 14 goals.

Maradona recovering after successful surgery

The 58-year-old Dorados coach has had an operation and will “return to work as soon as possible”, his lawyer revealed this week

Argentina icon Diego Maradona has undergone successful surgery and will return to manage Dorados as soon as he is able to, according to his lawyer.

It was reported in Argentina last week that Maradona had been hospitalised in Buenos Aires after suffering a stomach bleed, though his daughter Dalma dismissed rumours of a serious illness as false.

The 58-year-old reassured fans he was fine with a post on his official Instagram account, stating he was “sorry to have worried you for no reason”.

However, Maradona’s lawyer revealed the Dorados boss had undergone surgery in Buenos Aires.

“Diego Maradona’s surgery has finished. Thank God everything went perfectly,” Matias Morla wrote on Twitter.

“A thank you to medical department of Clinica Olivos for your professionalism and humanity.

“Now we’re waiting for the recovery so Diego can return to work as soon as possible.”

Maradona himself also thanked staff at Swiss Medical and Clinica Olivos for his care.

The 1986 World Cup winner posted on Instagram: “I want to thank Swiss Medical and Clínica Olivos for the excellent care, and my doctors Leopoldo Luciano Luque, Ariel Sainz, and the team that accompanied them: Walter Godoy, Carlos Becerra, Sebastian Nani and Pablo Dimitroff. Thank you all!!!”

Dorados began their Ascenso MX Clausura campaign without Maradona on January 6, losing to 1-0 to Celaya, and they face Queretaro in the Copa MX on Wednesday.

Diego’s first season in Mexico saw the Sinaloa side reach the Apertura final, where they lost out to Atletico San Luis.

The winner of the Clausura tournament will meet San Luis in a final play-off to decide the sole team which will gain promotion to the Liga MX.

McMahon wants to lead by example

Sean McMahon is taking leadership in his stride, as he prepares to captain the Melbourne Rebels for the third week in a row.

McMahon has taken over the captaincy role in place of injured skipper Nic Stirzaker ,with the 21-year-old leading Melbourne in their trial against Samoa and to open the Super Rugby season.

The back rower said his leadership style had been influenced by his time at last year’s Rugby World Cup, learning off Stephen Moore and experienced Test players like David Pocock.

“Going to the World Cup and learning from players like Stephen Moore and leaders like david pocock they’re all players that lead by example and they’re really dominant through their knowledge and knowledge of game,” he said.

“Learning from them that’s probably what i want to continue to do is be a ‘lead by example’ leader and have the knowledge of the game where I can make the right decisions throughout the whole of the game if I’m given an opportunity as a leader on the field.”

McMahon said the Rebels had recovered well from the stifling conditions in Perth in the opening round, ahead of their only South African visit this year.

“Perth was extremely hot but we have great off-field staff and we were straight back into recovery,” he asid.

“I don’t think we could be in a better position right now.”

McMahon, who had a quiet game by his lofty standards in the opener, said he was looking to make more of an impact as the Rebels search for their first win in South Africa.

“Personally I thought I could’ve done a little bit more especially coming into that first round of games,” he said.

“It was one of those games where it’s a little bit hard to get into.

“I’m excited and we’ll take it with both hands have a red hot crack and jump right in.”

“Personally I thought I could’ve done a little bit more especially coming into that first round of games one of those games where it’s a little bit hard to get into.

“I’m excited and we’ll take it with both hands have a red hot crack and jump right in.

The Rebels will be without Mike Harris, Colby Fainga’a and Stirzaker for the Bulls clash but McMahon said he was confident their depth would be able to cover it.

“That’s just professional Rugby, (things) always pop up with injuries throughout the season,” he said.

‘We showed we’ve got a lot of depth last weekend against the Force.”

Fabinho sheds light on Salah, Mane Liverpool spat

Liverpool midfielder Fabinho has revealed what happened after the fall-out between teammates Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.

Mane reacted angrily after being substituted at the end of Liverpool’s 3-0 win at Burnley in August.

The Senegalese international was apparently unhappy at being ignored by Salah when unmarked in front of an open goal.

Manager Jurgen Klopp later played down the incident, while both Mane and Salah have dismissed what happened.

Now Fabinho has shed further light on the disagreement.

When asked by The Straits Times of Singapore whether the strike duo remain friends, the Brazilian said: “Of course.

“After you know, they joked in the dressing room and spoke normally. They are very good friends.

“In the moment in the game, things can get heated but it’s not the first time and won’t be the last time. It’s okay.”

Fabinho was speaking ahead of Brazil’s friendly against Mane’s Senegal in Singapore on Thursday, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

The Liverpool midfielder didn’t feature but Mane won the penalty which levelled the scores after fellow Red Roberto Firmino’s well-taken opener.

“We joked a bit about it,” Fabinho said of the game. “Sadio said he’d score against us. He’s a very good guy.”

Dortmund chief admits it will be hard to keep Sancho

Borussia Dortmund’s assistant manager Jorg Heinrich insists the club want to keep Jadon Sancho but admits it will be hard to resist interest from ‘very big clubs’ like Manchester United.

The England international has thrived in the Bundesliga since leaving Manchester City for Dortmund in 2017.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had identified Sancho as the key player in his overhaul at Old Trafford but their failure to qualify for the Champions League ended the club’s chances of landing the winger in the summer.

United remain interested in Sancho but now face competition from clubs in more attractive positions.

Heinrich insists the club want to keep Sancho for another 18 months, he admits it will be tough.

“Jadon can become one of the best players in Europe, or even the world,” Heinrich told Omnisport.

“It won’t be easy to keep him at Dortmund. We hope he plays one or two seasons longer but we all know very, very big clubs with a lot of money want to have him in their team.

“He should know Dortmund is an excellent place for young players to play consistently and to develop on a very, very high level.”

Drogba backs Lukaku to prove Man Utd doubters wrong

Didier Drogba insists Romelu Lukaku is “like a son” to him and has backed the Belgian to establish himself as one of the worlds’ best strikers.

The former Chelsea man left Manchester United over the summer as he looks to reignite his career in Italy after securing a big-money switch to Inter Milian.

Drogba played a key role in helping the Belgian striker reach his potential, and speaking to HLN he says that he expects people will only appreciate Lukaku’s attributes when they look back on his career.

He said: “Romelu is like a son to me.

“When he came to our cloakroom in Chelsea at the time, there was an immediate click between us.

“Also because he literally knew everything about me. Romelu could describe in detail every goal I had ever scored. In fact, he even knew which football boots I had played with. (laughs)

“But it wasn’t because of that knowledge that we agreed well. Because of Romelu’s personality. It is so beautiful. ”

“He shows respect for everyone. And he is eager to learn – he constantly came to ask for advice.

“Now, by the way, it happens regularly that we have contact. He knows he can always come to me.

”Not least when it seems like the whole globe is against Lukaku. But that criticism shows that Romelu is world top. Only later will the supporters realize how good Romelu was when they look at his achievements.

“Now they are used to their phenomenal performances – success is used, also for the fans – but there comes a time when that is no longer the case. And then only the memory remains. (pauses for a moment) Ah, that is not immediately, though.

“Romelu is still not at its top, has a lot of progression. He is only getting better. ”

Tottenham make huge statement over Pochettino’s future

Tottenham have sent chief scout Steve Hitchen on a scouting trip to Argentina in a sign that they are fully invested in Mauricio Pochettino’s reign.

The future of Pochettino has been questioned intensely in recent weeks, with the club struggling to settle this season just a matter of months after reaching the Champions League final.

Tottenham are 9th in the Premier League table, having lost as many games as Sheffield United and Brighton, with their 7-2 shellacking against Bayern Munich feeling like the end of an era.

But the Daily Mail say that the club’s decision to dispatch Hitchen to South America is ‘a clear sign’ of their faith in Pochettino’s work.

With Erik Lamela, Paulo Gazzaniga, Giovani Lo Celso and Juan Foyth all part of the current squad, their Argentinean contingent is particularly strong.

And Tottenham have outlined their desire to continue trusting players from the manager’s native country with Hitchen ‘recently scouting players’ in the country.

The club ‘do not anticipate a managerial change in the near future’ and any departure ‘would have to be initiated by the manager himself’.

Wenger: Gnabry’s Arsenal exit down to Bayern ‘manipulation’

Arsene Wenger says Serge Gnabry left Arsenal because Bayern Munich “manipulated behind the scenes” in order to get their man.

The 24-year-old made his Gunners breakthrough in 2012 but after struggling to command a regular berth – and a loan spell with West Brom – joined Werder Bremen in 2016.

An impressive season which yielded 11 goals from 27 appearances brought him to Bayern’s attention and the Germany international is now tearing it up for the Bundesliga champions.

Gnabry made the headlines recently as he bludgeoned four past Tottenham in the Champions League as Bayern won 7-2 in their last group stage match.

“We tried to extend his contract for a very long time and I think that Bayern manipulated behind the scenes, that if he went to Bremen he would join Bayern after,” Wenger told beIN SPORTS.

“He was always a very talented boy who lacked confidence in some stages, but we always thought we had a player who could achieve a lot.

“He came back from a very bad experience [on loan] at West Brom where his confidence was destroyed. I tried to rebuild him because I believed in him.”

On Bayern’s win at Tottenham, Wenger added: “They’d just won 3-0 at Paderborn, you wouldn’t expect them to come and put seven goals away at Tottenham.

“I think it was one of those nights where everything goes for you and everything against Tottenham.”
