Man City star Sterling signs £15m-a-year contract extension

The England international had been linked with Real Madrid but will now remain at the Etihad Stadium until at least 2023

Raheem Sterling has signed a three-year contract extension with Manchester City, the club have announced.

Sterling is now tied to the club until 2023 after agreeing a lucrative new deal that could earn him as much as £300,000 per week.

City had been trying to renew the England international’s contract since last season but only reached a break through in the past few weeks.

The 23-year-old had been linked with a move to Real Madrid but has now committed his future to City for the next five years.

“I’m delighted to sign,” Sterling said in a club release. “My development here has been incredible. I felt from the minute I got here it was the right choice for me. It’s really paid off for me and I’m really grateful.

“Every season you come in you want to do better than your previous season. You want to try and develop and get better.

“With the facilities we’ve got here there’s no reason not to. With the coaching staff and the players we have in this team it’s the perfect environment to develop and get better.”

Sterling is in his fourth season with City after joining the club from Liverpool in 2015.

The England international has established himself as one of the Premier League’s top attacking players, and put together a career year last season as City won the Premier League and Carabao Cup.

Sterling scored 23 goals and added 17 assists in 46 matches across all competitions in 2017-18, and has continued that form into this season with seven goals in 14 games in all competitions.

“This is a significant moment for the club,” Manchester City director of football Txiki Begiristain said.

“Raheem has improved dramatically in the past two seasons and is now one of the Premier League’s best attacking players. His statistics tell their own story.

“He’s quick, strong and excellent in front of goal – everything a modern-day forward needs to excel.

“We’re all delighted he has committed his future to City.”

‘We want Griezmann’ – Beckham hopes France star joins new MLS club

The Atletico Madrid striker has voiced interest in an MLS move in the future and the Miami owner thinks his city will be a big draw

David Beckham hopes Antoine Griezmann will join his Inter Miami club and believes other players will be lured by the attraction of playing in the city.

The Atletico Madrid striker has previously voiced his interest in coming to the United States later in his career.

Griezmann said in September that he would definitely consider joining Beckham’s new team, which is set to start play in 2020, if he was wanted at the club.

Beckham has now weighed in on the matter, saying he would love for the star man to eventually make his way to Miami to play.

“It’s always nice to have great players want to come and play for our team,” Beckham told ESPN. “He’s such a great player. I’m a fan of his, he’s a fan of mine, so maybe one day he will be gracing the building in Miami and that’s what we want.”

Griezmann is not the first name that has been linked to Beckham’s expansion team, with the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo previously rumoured to be targets.

And while Beckham did not name anyone specific, he claims multiple players have reached out to him about the possibility of coming to the team when it starts play, hoping for the opportunity to live in Miami.

“Of course I have had a lot of players contacting me and not just because they want to play for the team,” said Beckham. “They want to live in a great city, they want to live in a city that is vibrant, that is exciting, that really wants to be something and already is something. That’s exciting for people.”

Inter Miami won a major victory on Tuesday when voters approved their stadium plans to develop land on a publically owned golf course near Miami International Airport.

Sporting director Paul McDonough believes that now that the vote has been passed, expectations have to be met. Those expectations include getting big names on the roster, which can only be done once they have built more of an infrastructure around the team.

“I think this city and this club and this ownership group demands that we get some stars,” McDonough told ESPN. “That is going to be really important from us and we haven’t hidden from that.

“Now that this [vote] has been passed and we continue to do more things and we put our vision together for the training ground and things like that, then players will continue to call and we’ll field calls and talk and figure out what’s best for us.”

Club co-owner Jorge Mas also confirmed the team is in the process putting a squad together, which will begin in earnest over the coming months.

“We already have a short list of coaches, of players, so we’ll be putting a team together over the next six to nine months,” Mas said.

Solari has earned more time at Madrid after passing Celta test

Click:3 chuck laser cutting machine

The Argentine has Los Blancos back on track and has earned a chance as the club’s full-time manager

Santiago Solari has undertaken a two-week long test and passed it with full marks. With Sunday’s thumping 4-2 victory over Celta Vigo, Real Madrid’s interim coach maintained his 100 per cent record, steering the Spanish giants to sixth in La Liga.

The Argentine has accomplished four victories from four games across all competitions, 15 goals scored, three clean sheets. The numbers are inarguable, especially when compared to five defeats from seven games that Julen Lopetegui managed before he was sacked at the end of October.

On Monday Madrid must give him a full-time contract or appoint a different coach because of rules preventing anyone from holding an interim position for longer than 15 days, and Solari will consider his position safe after his successful trial period.

Madrid’s turn in form, combined with a lack of available managers for the position, means president Florentino Perez is poised to hand Solari the keys. Of course, should things go wrong or Perez find a coach he would rather appoint, Solari’s time in charge may end up being brief, but for now Madrid’s results speak for themselves.

That’s not to say Solari’s Madrid haven’t ridden their luck, something which Lopetegui enjoyed little of during his painful tenure.

This was the third game in succession that Madrid needed the frame of their goal to save them, with Turkish midfielder Okay Yokuslu hitting the post early in the game. After surviving that scare Madrid took the lead through Karim Benzema and wasted a good chance to double it when Toni Kroos fired over with the goal gaping.

An own goal from Gustavo Cabral, who was later sent off, was another stroke of fortune and David Junca’s bizarre challenge on Alvaro Odriozola led to a penalty, converted by Sergio Ramos. The one Madrid goal against Celta which owed nothing to luck was Dani Ceballos’s brilliant long-range effort.

During the first three months of the season Lopetegui’s team put in similar performances to this without earning victory, but Solari does deserve credit for his work. He has invigorated Benzema, with the French striker appearing to sink back into a rut in Lopetegui’s final weeks, but the forward now has three goals in three games under Solari.

One area where Solari isn’t having any luck at all is with injuries. Madrid started off with a makeshift defence because of injuries to Marcelo, Raphael Varane and Dani Carvajal, and more casualties were added to that list at Balaidos.Defensive midfielder Casemiro was taken off after 19 minutes, while Sergio Reguilon, the stand-in for Marcelo, also had to make way just after half time. When Nacho Fernandez suffered an injury after 71 minutes, right winger Lucas Vazquez had to switch to left back.

Despite that, Madrid survived against a Celta team with potent attackers, showing Solari has instilled some self-belief in a team that looked shipwrecked a fortnight ago.

There are still problems to solve. Solari has not got the best from Gareth Bale, for example. The Welsh winger, back on the left flank instead of the right, still looks lost through most of the game, far from the star he is supposed to be.

However Solari, it seems, has done enough to earn more time to tackle the team’s issues.

Wenger explains Sanchez's struggles since swapping Arsenal for Man Utd

The Chilean forward was considered to be quite the coup for the Red Devils following his January arrival, but he has failed to make the desired impact

Alexis Sanchez has “lost confidence”, according to his former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, with the Chilean struggling to make his mark at Manchester United.

The South American forward flourished at Emirates Stadium during his time working under an iconic coach, with his reputation firmly enhanced in north London.

He was, however, to take the decision in January to head for pastures new, as his contract with the Gunners ran down, and crossed the Premier League divide to end up at Old Trafford.

Things have not gone to plan for Sanchez in Manchester, who was considered to be quite a coup upon his arrival, with just four goals recorded so far.

So lost has the 29-year-old looked that he is generating more transfer talk 12 months on from his deal with the Red Devils, with Jose Mourinho struggling to bring the best out of him.

Wenger is saddened to see a former charge enduring such a dip, with the Frenchman telling beIN SPORTS: “I believe he has lost confidence.

“The strength of Alexis Sanchez is to take initiative to dribble and to take people on.

“Those are the players who are most vulnerable when they lose confidence their game is based on that and having that feeling to take initiative, he has lost that slowly.

“Since the start of the season he had a high level of physical energy but he has lost that as well.

“Certainly he is refreshed now because Mourinho left him out for a while.”

After grabbing a dramatic winner in a 3-2 victory over Newcastle prior to the October international break, Sanchez has been used sparingly since.

He was handed just five minutes off the bench in a 2-2 draw with Chelsea, before missing out on Champions League and Premier League meetings with Juventus and Everton.

Mourinho did welcome him back for a clash with Bournemouth, as Romelu Lukaku slipped out of the fold, and a starting berth was retained for a European return date with Juve.

United claimed 2-1 successes on the road in both of those fixtures, but Sanchez is still searching for his spark as awkward questions continue to be asked of his value to the cause.

De Guzman punch claims 'entirely false', say Napoli

The 31-year-old midfielder says he was struck by sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli in 2015, but the club have retaliated with a statement

Napoli have branded Jonathan de Guzman’s claim that he was punched by sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli “entirely false” and hinted at legal action against the midfielder.

De Guzman said in an interview in Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant that a fight broke out between the pair when he was hit in the face by Giuntoli in an argument about his future in 2015.

The Netherlands international, who joined the club from Villarreal in 2014, said problems started during preparation for the 2015-16 campaign. De Guzman was told to train despite suffering from stomach pains, and the Italian side decided to sell him. After a series of arguments with Giuntoli, things came to a head on September 1 – after the transfer window closed.

De Guzman alleges that Giuntoli called him a “piece of sh*t” and said he had promised to leave the club before punching him in the face.

“We started fighting, chairs fell over,” De Guzman said.

“My team mate [Juan Camilo] Zuniga joined us, pulled us apart and said to me: ‘Take your things and go home’.”

But Napoli have insisted the 31-year-old, now playing with Eintracht Frankfurt, was not telling the truth and will let their lawyers handle it.

“SSC Napoli would like to stress that his version of the events in question, which took place over three years ago, is entirely false,” a statement on their website read.

“The club reserves the right to protect its image and that of its employees via the appropriate legal channels.”

A few months after the alleged incident, De Guzman was loaned to Carpi for six months and spent the following season at Chievo before joining Eintracht Frankfurt on a free transfer in July 2017.

U.S. U-20s seal Concacaf final date with Mexico with win over Honduras

A goal from Ayo Akinola was enough to move Tab Ramos’ side one step closer to a trophy

The U.S. under-20 men’s national team is already bound for the U-20 World Cup, but Tab Ramos’ side moved one step closer to a trophy on Monday with a win over Honduras.

Ayo Akinola’s second-half goal was just enough for the USA, who edged Honduras 1-0 on Monday night in their latest CONCACAF U-20 Championship clash.

With the win, the U.S. picked up the team’s seventh consecutive win to open the competition and advanced to the tournament finale against Mexico. El Tri advanced thanks to a 2-2 draw with Panama in their group finale on Monday.

The U.S., Mexico, Panama and Honduras are all bound for next summer’s World Cup with Honduras earning the point needed to edge Costa Rica for the final qualifying spot.

Following a scoreless first half, the USA finally got their breakthrough just moments into the second via Akinola.

In the 51st minute, the Toronto FC product broke through on the right as a deflected long ball fell to his feet.

Akinola fired on the half-volley, finding the far post and providing the U.S. with the goal needed to seal a spot in the final.

The goal was Akinola’s sixth of the tournament, tying him with Ulysses Llanez for the team lead.

Now, the U.S. look ahead to a clash with Mexico, the region’s most successful U-20 side with 15 of the 21 total titles in the competition’s history.

The U.S. won their first crown just last year, topping Honduras in that finale.

Mexico and the U.S. will collide on Wednesday to close the tournament.

Giggs backed as the right man for Wales job by Allen

The midfielder has come out in support of the former Manchester United star following the surprise friendly defeat by Albania

Joe Allen has backed Wales coach Ryan Giggs’ leadership and says it has been a great experience working under the Manchester United legend.

Wales have not had a year to remember after missing out on promotion in the Nations League last week against Denmark and losing to Albania 1-0 in a friendly on Tuesday.

A second-half penalty consigned Wales to defeat, meaning that they end Giggs’ first year in charge with back-to-back defeats.

Despite winning just three of their nine games in 2018, Allen still believes that Giggs is the right man for the job.

“It’s been a great experience for everyone since he’s come in,” Allen told Sky Sports .

“A lot of new ideas have come into the camp and many players have had the chance to get game time and try and impress.”

Giggs has been keen to embed young talent into this Wales squad with Bournemouth’s David Brooks and Liverpool’s Ben Woodburn being given opportunities to impress in recent fixtures.

Allen added: “We’ve spoken a lot about the youngsters that have come into the set up, and that’s what has given us a lot of confidence about the future.

“We can’t wait for the [Euro] qualifiers in March, it’s a few months away and this was our last chance to be together before then.

“Our task now as players is to make sure we’re ready to fire when those games come around. We’re excited to see who we’ll be up against.”

Giggs himself was less than impressed by his team’s performance on Tuesday night against Albania, saying that they let themselves down by not playing their way.

“They let themselves down,” said Giggs. “We go a goal down, we don’t play our own game, we are pumping the ball in their box.

“Quite simply we turned up thinking we would win and thinking someone would get us out of trouble.

“I have been in football long enough to smell when something is going to happen and I said that at half-time because players didn’t have that concentration.”

Republic of Ireland must improve, says under-pressure O'Neill

The squad’s poor form continued as they were fortunate to draw against Northern Ireland on Thursday and are winless in 10 matches

Martin O’Neill has revealed he is feeling the pressure after the Republic of Ireland put in another poor display in the 0-0 draw with Northern Ireland.

Darren Randolph’s fine performance saved Ireland on Thursday, as the goalkeeper pulled off a string of quality stops to help the hosts avoid a humbling defeat.

Northern Ireland would have been worthy winners, with O’Neill’s switch to a 3-5-2 system doing little to improve Ireland’s attacking play.

Boos from the home crowd were audible at full-time, and O’Neill believed that the criticism was justified, with Ireland having won just one of their past 10 international matches.

“We’re in a results business and we need to improve,” O’Neill told Sky Sports when asked if his job was under scrutiny.

“We made a few mistakes that could have cost us in the end. Randolph made some really good saves. Overall, we didn’t do enough.

“We didn’t do enough, certainly going forward. Now we’ve stopped leaking goals we have to improve going forward.

“We’re in a transitional period at the minute, we might have some of our more experienced players coming back, so I think we’re in a good position to turn it around.”

Northern Ireland boss Michael O’Neill, meanwhile, could find little fault with his side’s display despite their wasteful finishing.

“I’m proud of how the team played, we were very dominant in the game, had our chances but didn’t take them, and Darren Randolph had a great game,” he told Sky Sports.

“We deserved to win the game, I’m really pleased with the performance.

“We’ve got two young players in Gavin [Whyte] and Jordan [Jones], and both would normally take those chances, so they’re disappointed, but they’re both good players.

“The gameplan was to come and control the game and I think we did that. At no point in the game did I feel we were not in control.

“Possibly we could have created more chances than we did. We have to be more clinical in our final pass, it’s an individual thing.

“We have to get the players in those areas and take it up a level, hopefully that’ll come with more experience and starting to win games again and get that momentum.”

While Ireland’s Nations League fate could be determined before they take on Denmark on Monday, Northern Ireland have already been relegated from League B thanks to Austria’s draw with Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Wenger: I'm not retired, I'm frustrated after leaving Arsenal

The experienced Frenchman remains out of work since leaving the Gunners and admits he is eager to get back into the daily grind of club management

Arsene Wenger insists he is “not finished”, with the former Arsenal boss admitting to feeling “frustrated” as he waits on an opportunity to return to management.

The Frenchman has been out of work since seeing a 22-year spell at the Gunners helm brought to a close over the summer.

Various posts have been mooted for the 69-year-old, with the likes of Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, AC Milan and Fulham having all been linked with an approach for his services.

Wenger is still hoping to find a suitable role which will allow him to head back into the dugout, with there no desire on his part to walk away from coaching just yet.

He told beIN Sports: “I don’t feel retired at all but I feel frustrated from [a lack of] competition.

“I am basically a competitor and what I miss – honestly there are many things I don’t miss at all, like all of the stuff around the game you have to deal with.

“But of course, the day, the competition, the achievement that you can do together, sharing emotions, sharing competitions, ups and downs with others, of course you miss that because I spent my life in that.”

Wenger has previously stated that, with such strong ties to Arsenal, he will not be taking another job in the Premier League.

Opportunities across Europe appear set to present themselves at some stage and a man who collected 10 major honours during his time in England is waiting on the right call.

“I’m not finished,” he added.

“People always want to put you in cases, like you are retired or you are finished. People want to finish you completely when you have got older.

“But as long as you have an appetite for life I will go on.

“One advantage I have from 35 years in the game is sharing what I know with other people and if you don’t do that then life is useless.

“You should not leave this world without trying to give something to the people.”

Nuno calls foul on Cardiff equaliser as Wolves winless run goes on

Friday’s defeat was “hard to take” for the Wolves boss as they surrendered a lead in controversial fashion to make it six games without a win

Nuno Espirito Santo is convinced Cardiff City’s first goal in Wolves’ 2-1 defeat on Friday should not have been allowed to stand due to an apparent foul on goalkeeper Rui Patricio.

Cardiff came from behind to take the points in Wales, clawing themselves out of the Premier League’s bottom three in the process.

Wolves took an early lead through Matt Doherty, as he smashed in from close range after Neil Etheridge saved Raul Jimenez’s header.

But Aron Gunnarsson levelled just after the hour in acrobatic fashion, with Patricio – who had been blocked off by Callum Paterson – all at sea.

In the end a stunning strike from Junior Hoilett gave Cardiff the win late on, but Nuno felt Wolves had been hard done by for the equaliser.

“It’s hard to judge. As a former goalkeeper I think it was a foul,” he told BBC Sport.

“All defeats are hard to take. But when you have the lead and the game changes, it’s very hard.

“I think we had a better game than last week [a home defeat against Huddersfield Town]. The first half was good. But the second half we didn’t do enough to hang onto the lead.”

Nuno’s counterpart Neil Warnock turns 70 on Saturday and, having been behind at the break, he quipped about wanting his players to give him reason to celebrate.

“I said to the boys it’s about time they gave me something to celebrate,” he told Sky Sports. “I’m really proud of them.

“I didn’t think we deserved to be 1-0 down. In the second half we were on the front foot for most of the time.

“Gunnars [Gunnarsson] knows he made a mistake [for the Wolves goal], but he apologised. I said to the boys, ‘you have to get Gunnars out of the cart’. I think we had some good opportunities after the break – I thought we wanted it more.”
