Bellerin thigh injury adds to Arsenal's defensive woes

Unai Emery’s defensive headaches look set to continue with the news that the Arsenal full-back Hector Bellerin has a thigh injury

Hector Bellerin has added to Arsenal’s defensive woes with the news he will miss Wednesday’s Carabao Cup clash with Blackpool and is a doubt to face Liverpool this weekend.

Bellerin was substituted at half-time in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace, the 23-year-old replaced by Stephan Lichtsteiner.

The full-back is one of five Gunners defenders currently sidelined with injury, leaving coach Unai Emery with very few options ahead of two games in quick succession.

Bellerin suffered a right thigh injury at Selhurst Park and Arsenal have confirmed he will be assessed ahead of Liverpool’s trip to Emirates Stadium on Saturday – where a win would move Arsenal to within one point of Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The defender has been an important part of Arsenal’s squad this season, delivering four assists in 10 Premier League contests.

Bellerin had confirmed his injury on Sunday through social media, though he did not detail how long he would be out, saying he was working to come back quickly.

The Gunners will also be without Konstantinos Mavropanos and Laurent Koscielny, as the wait for the duo goes on.

Mavropanos is expected to return to training next month after a groin problem, while Koscielny’s recovery from Achilles surgery has seen him start to be reintegrated back into the squad.

Arsenal will also be without Mohamed Elneny for the next two weeks due to a thigh problem.

However, the Gunners could receive a fitness boost in the form of Nacho Monreal and Sead Kolasinac.

Both players are nursing hamstring injuries, but will be checked prior to the cup match and may be in line for a return against the midtable League One side.

How Elizabeth Warren would cancel student loan debt

What would the plan do?

Sen. Elizabeth Warren on Tuesday introduced legislation that would carry out her campaign promise to wipe out some $640 billion of outstanding student loan debt.

“Student loan debt in this nation has reached crisis proportions,” the Massachusetts Democrat declared at a press conference alongside Rep. Jim Clyburn, the No. 3 Democrat in the House, who is leading a companion bill in that chamber.

Warren has pitched the debt cancellation plan as a way to tackle the racial wealth gap, noting that borrowers of color are disproportionately burdened by student loan debt.

It’s also meant as a broader economic stimulus. Warren said that the more than $1.5 trillion of outstanding student debt “is a drag on our entire economy” as loan borrowers delay or forgo economic activity such as buying a house or starting a business.

Who would qualify?

Student loan borrowers who have $100,000 or less of gross household income would receive up to $50,000 of forgiveness. Borrowers earning between $100,001 and $250,000 would receive proportionally less in loan forgiveness. Every $3 of income over $100,000 would reduce the cancellation amount by $1.

Borrowers earning more than $250,000 would not be eligible for any debt relief.

All federal student loan borrowers would qualify for loan forgiveness. Private student loan borrowers would also be eligible for debt relief, though they would first have to refinance their private debt into a federal student loan.

How would it work?

The federal government would automatically cancel eligible student loans without requiring borrowers to submit applications. That’s because the Education Department would use information that the government already has about borrowers’ income and debt levels to determine who qualifies.

The federal government would suspend the collection of student loan payments for a year while the Education Department carries out the loan forgiveness program. Any amount of loan forgiveness would not count as taxable income.

How much would it cost?

It’s not clear exactly how much the plan would cost, as the Congressional Budget Office has not yet scored the bill. But Warren has said the plan will wipe out some $640 billion in debt.

The legislation doesn’t include any mechanism to offset the spending, though Warren has floated the idea of funding it with a 2 percent “wealth tax” on individuals who have a net worth above $50 million. Clyburn, a South Carolina Democrat, said he’d like to fund the bill by reversing some of the tax breaks for high-income individuals and corporations in the GOP tax law.

What other provisions are in the bill?

The legislation would automatically lower the interest rate on all existing federal student loans. And the bill would make it much easier for borrowers of federal and private student loans to discharge their debt through bankruptcy.

The plan also calls for repairing the credit history of borrowers who defaulted and then have their loans canceled.

What have other Democrats proposed?

Sen. Bernie Sanders has a competing plan to cancel student loan debt. But unlike Warren’s plan, Sanders’ proposal would forgive all outstanding student loan debt, regardless of a borrower’s income.

Julián Castro, the former San Antonio mayor and housing secretary under President Barack Obama, has a smaller student loan forgiveness plan that seeks to target loan forgiveness for lower-income borrowers.

South Bend, Ind. Mayor Pete Buttigieg has proposed student loan cancellation for borrowers who commit to national service or who enrolled in low-performing career college programs, mostly at for-profit colleges.

The stats that suggest Lindelof and Bailly should be Man Utd’s centre back pairing

Click:06SC 6kA

Jose Mourinho has yet to settle on a favoured pairing and his two signings have given United decent returns so far

There was division and consternation in the Manchester United ranks this summer when Jose Mourinho’s attempts to bring in a new centre-half fell on deaf ears.

The United manager had identified Toby Alderweireld and Harry Maguire as potential additions to the Old Trafford defensive corps, but executive vice-chair Ed Woodward and his fellow board members insisted that the Portuguese already had enough reinforcements and only a high-profile arrival such as Raphael Varane would be sanctioned.

So Mourinho instead went into the 2018-19 campaign bemoaning the hand he had been played and United have since kept only three clean sheets and conceded 16 goals in 11 fixtures, shipping 14 in eight league games compared to the two they had allowed at this stage last term.

Mourinho has chopped and changed too, starting the season with Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof as his preferred duo but then switching to Chris Smalling with Lindelof and latterly Bailly and Smalling as he looks for the right partnership. He has even used midfielders Ander Herrera and Scott McTominay in back threes.

But which of United’s five senior centre-halves – including Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo – have had the greatest effect on the Red Devils since Mourinho became the boss back in the summer of 2016?

When it comes to win percentage, Lindelof leads the way. The Swede has come out on the victorious side in 69 per cent of his 29 starts as a centre-back since arriving from Benfica in 2017. While he has been identified as a weakness at times due to the occasional clanger the 24-year-old has actually been the most successful of United’s centre-back options over the last two seasons-plus, just ahead of Bailly.

In terms of racking up clean sheets it is the Ivorian who comes out on top, helping to keep opponents scoreless in 27 of his 54 starts in the heart of the defence. The former Villarreal man was particularly prolific in that respect in the early part of the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons, but he has played only 18 minutes of league football this term since starting the ugly 3-2 reverse to Brighton in August, with his afternoon ending remarkably early against Newcastle last time out.

But while Bailly and Lindelof have the favourable individual records, Mourinho has started them together only three times and just twice in a flat back four. Since those two matches at the beginning of the league campaign it is Smalling who has been the constant in United’s defence. And when it comes to being part of a solid partnership, the former England stopper’s name is prevalent among those who have consistently paired up to record clean sheets under Mourinho.

So does Mourinho continue to side with Smalling as he looks for the right mix at the back? Or does he give Bailly and Lindelof the chance to develop an understanding over a longer period of time? The manager will need to show his two centre-back signings the same faith the board displayed in the summer if we are to find out whether they can be the answer to United’s current defensive woes.

A young U.S. side looks to bounce back from a defeat to Colombia when another strong South American team visits Tuesday

After Thursday’s 4-2 defeat to Colombia, interim United States coach Dave Sarachan and his team have a chance to get back on track in another South American test on Tuesday.

The U.S. could put an even younger lineup on the field for this game, but it isn’t likely to get much easier. Like Colombia, Peru also is coming off the World Cup in Russia, and after two defeats in Europe during the September friendly window, they bounced back with a 3-0 victory over Chile last week in Miami.

Peru hasn’t beat the U.S. in more than 20 years but has been much improved under Ricardo Gareca and will be looking to close out the month with another triumph.

Position United States players
Goalkeepers Guzan, Horvath
Defenders Brooks, Cannon, Carter-Vickers, Long, Miazga, Robinson, Sweat, Yedlin
Midfielders Acosta, Amon, Bradley, Delgado, Green, Picault, Saief, Trapp, Weah
Forwards Novakovich, Sargent, Wood

Goalkeeper Zach Steffen left the U.S. camp after feeling tightness in his hamstring in the match against Colombia and heading back to his club as a precautionary measure.

Reggie Cannon and Jonathan Amon didn’t see time against the Cafeteros and will get their first-ever U.S. caps as they get the start against Peru. Sarachan has made numerous changes, with just Kellyn Acosta and Timothy Weah returning from the XI that began against Colombia.

USA Starting XI: Guzan; Cannon, Carter-Vickers, Long, Sweat; Delgado, Trapp, Acosta; Weah, Sargent, Amon.

Position Peru players
Goalkeepers Gallese, Carvallo, Alvarez
Defenders Ramos, Advincula, Trauco, Santamaria, Callens, Loyola, Madrid
Midfielders Yotun, Cueva, Carrillo, Flores, Hurtado, Tapia, Aquino, Polo, Pena, Cartagena, Calcaterra
Forwards Ruidiaz, Reyna

Peru surprised a bit by making some changes to the XI that rolled to victory against Chile, as Andy Polo is among those who made a successful push to get into the starting lineup.

Peru XI: Gallese; Advincula, Ramos, Callens, Loyola; Tapia, Pena, Flores, Hurtado, Polo; Ruidiaz.

It has now been more than a year since the United States fell to Trinidad and Tobago in World Cup qualification and missed out on a trip to Russia. Since then, a number of young players have been given opportunities – though not always as many as fans hoped would see time.

This game could be one that puts a smile on the face of those who want a sweeping youth movement. Experienced goalkeeper Brad Guzan will start with Zack Steffen back with his club after feeling hamstring tightness, but aside from the Atlanta United shot-stopper, many of the players interim boss Dave Sarachan puts out against Peru will be largely inexperienced at the international level.

The same is unlikely to be said of his counterpart’s lineup. Ricardo Gareca guided his team to the World Cup in 2018, the first time since since 1982 the South American nation found itself on soccer’s grandest stage. The Argentine has agreed to continue at the team’s helm, giving Peru continuity that is rare in the Americas during this time of post-World Cup upheaval on the bench.

It showed last week, when Peru was able to stump Chile in a 3-0 victory over La Roja. Now expectations are high for next summer’s Copa America, but first Peru will look to close out the month with its first win over the U.S. in 21 years.

While the results have gone in favor of the North Americans, Peruvian soccer has benefited from having players on North American clubs. Luis Advincula, now in La Liga with Rayo Vallecano, is among six players whose rights currently are with a Liga MX team. MLS players Raul Ruidiez and Andy Polo stopped through Mexico as well before moving to teams in the U.S., while attacking midfielder Christian Cueva played in Liga MX before moving to Brazil and to his current club in Russia.

Gareca used a similar starting XI, but Sarachan promised and delivered plenty of changes for the U.S. as he and his staff get long looks at players who may form the base of the next generation. Peru in its ascendency should provide a good test, but perhaps a better chance to get a result than a Colombia team that went further in Russia than Peru was able to go.

'Why would Hazard want to leave Chelsea?' – former Blues captain Hollins questions Real Madrid move

With the Belgian continuing to be linked with a move to Real Madrid, an ex-skipper questions why he should even consider leaving

Eden Hazard has no reason to leave Chelsea, according to former Stamford Bridge captain John Hollins.

Hazard has regularly been linked with a move to Real Madrid in recent months and has spoken publicly about his desire to play for the Spanish giants in the past.

The Belgium international is currently weighing up whether to extend his current contract past 2020 as speculation continues about his future.

But former Blues skipper Hollins has questioned why Hazard would want to consider leaving at all at this stage of his career, even to a club like Madrid.

“Hazard is happy here, he’s in London, it’s a lovely city and his family are all settled,” Hollins told Love Sport Radio. “Why would you want to get up and settle again when you are on top money, you’re the main man of Chelsea who can do anything you want, and you’re still a Belgium international? You must think to yourself ‘why would I want to move?’

“The players around him suit him, he also uses his skills against players who want to kick him and [those around him] protect him.”

Chelsea face Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Saturday looking to maintain their unbeaten start to the season under new boss Maurizio Sarri.

And Hollins has been impressed with the impact Sarri had made since replacing Antonio Conte in July.

“[Sarri] is not one that wants to be in the limelight. He sits on the side there and has a cigarette now and again. I don’t know whether that’s what keeps him calm!”

Hollins has also backed Alvaro Morata to succeed at a difficult few months for the striker at Stamford Bridge.

Morata scored just once in his opening nine matches of the campaign but has since scored twice in his last two games ahead of Saturday’s Red Devils visit.

“There’s always someone saying ‘let’s get rid of him and bring somebody else in’ but Morata has scored again now so hopefully that will strengthen his position – and it’s a very good position to be in, whoever is in it,” added Hollins.

“You’ve got Hazard, Willian and other people around you. They’ve started off, they haven’t been beaten, they’re playing well, Christmas will come and there might be a few presents bought there and brought into the team and they’ll most probably win the league. Then all of a sudden you’re in the Champions League!”

Everything is fine – Kroos clarifies Sane criticism

The Real Madrid midfielder moved to clarify comments he made about his Germany team-mate last month

Germany midfielder Toni Kroos played down his criticism of Leroy Sane, insisting he was full of praise for the attacker.

Real Madrid star Kroos questioned Sane’s body language during the international break last month.

However, the 28-year-old moved to clarify his comments on Thursday, saying he had lauded the Manchester City attacker.

“It was forgotten that I praised him in the first three minutes. I couldn’t see that anywhere, but that was clear to me. I’m not stupid,” Kroos told a news conference.

“Back then I didn’t say that he doesn’t care. I said that sometimes it seems that he doesn’t care. You always have to be careful. I know that something like this gets interpreted in a negative way, but I don’t care.

“I have a good relationship with Leroy. Back then it was a pity that he had to leave after the first game. He played well against France after the substitution. He makes a good impression.

“I don’t need to repeat those first three minutes of my praise. I’m looking forward to playing with him for a while, because I know his qualities. And I’ve already mentioned that.

“Everything is fine. We don’t see each other that often, so it’s difficult to find a big change. But he doesn’t have to change much.”

Sane recently said that he feels motivated by criticism, as well as his snub from this summer’s World Cup.

Germany face Netherlands in the Nations League on Saturday before meeting France again.

Both Brazil and Argentina are gearing up for the 2019 Copa America, so the autumn friendly games offer an opportunity for coaches to experiment with personnel and fine-tune tactics.

Argentina are shorn of some of their most recognisable performers for the game, with Messi, Aguero and Di Maria among those not in the squad, but their absence has allowed space for the likes of Lautaro Martinez and Ricardo Pereyra to shine, not to mention the likes of Icardi and Paulo Dybala.

Brazil, on the other hand, boast a typically strong panel, with Tite including stars such as Neymar and Philippe Coutinho in his squad for the match. Nevertheless, the 57-year-old has included a number of new faces, with the likes of Richarlison, Arthur and Malcom being given a chance to impress.

Tite was not pleased with his side’s performance in their 2-0 win over Saudi Arabia last week and he will be demanding a much more passionate display against their bitter rivals.

“We were not convincing,” Tite told reporters of his side’s victory. “We won because we had creativity up front and that was it. Brazil versus Argentina is never a friendly. We hope to be better for that.”

Mexico national team once again a refuge for struggling Marco Fabian

With minutes scarce at Eintracht Frankfurt after a failed summer move, the national team is a place where the midfielder can be himself

You can see it from the smile on Marco Fabian’s face. The midfielder is happy, joyous, to be in the Mexico national team’s training sessions.

If that’s not proof enough, there are the social media posts like the one he posted Tuesday of him nutmegging Raul Jimenez and Diego Reyes during a rondo.

The national team once again is serving as a kind of refuge for Fabian. It’s been a rough summer for the 29-year-old. After you play in the World Cup, you’re supposed to move on to bigger things. But even his time in Russia could have been frustrating. After appearing in three matches in the 2014 World Cup, Fabian came on only in Mexico’s 3-0 loss to Sweden to close out the group stage. El Tri already were trailing by two goals when he made his way onto the pitch.

Perhaps, though, Fabian was simply happy to be on the field at all. A back injury that cut short his 2017-18 campaign left him hardly able to walk, much less play soccer at a competitive level. However, he fought back, returned to the Eintracht squad and earned his place in Juan Carlos Osorio’s 23-man roster for Russia.

He insists those back problems are behind him, but others aren’t so sure. After Eintracht manager Adi Hutter made it public knowledge in August that he viewed Fabian as surplus to his team, the former Chivas star looked for an exit and found one in Turkey. He agreed to a move to Fenerbahce, where he could link up with fellow Mexico player Diego Reyes and play in the Europa League. But the move fell through at the last minute. The Turkish club said it was because of Fabian’s back, while Fabian and his camp were adamant that the club had attempted to change the contract at the last minute, causing the deal to collapse.

“I did the exams, I passed them, everything was excellent and that’s when they wanted to change certain points in my contract that neither myself nor my agent agreed with,” Fabian said this week. “They were economic things, bonuses, we didn’t want to stay like that and they tried to put out excuses about my back.”

The end result was Fabian being stuck at Frankfurt. There was a moment of hope after Hutter included him in the starting XI against Borussia Dortmund on Sept. 14.

“I’m fighting for a place in the team, and that’s no surprise – you win your spot like this,” Fabian told the Bundesliga’s official website. “Everyone knows I’ve had a lot of problems in the last few weeks, but now my head and my mind are in the right place and I’m happy to be in the starting XI once again.”

That was the last time he’s played for Frankfurt. He’s made the bench just once since then and is not even eligible for Frankfurt’s Europa League matches, having been omitted from the squad.

Despite the lack of club playing time, accepting the call-up from interim El Tri boss Tuca Ferretti is a bit of a risk from Fabian. That start against Dortmund developed after he stayed back in Germany during the international break and scored in a friendly. However, the national team always has been a place for Fabian to experience moments of joy. He wore the Olympic gold medal around his neck in 2012 and has celebrated incredible goals scored in the Confederations Cup, Gold Cup and friendly matches.

It’s a big change for a player who a decade ago was expelled from a Mexico camp because of indiscipline. Now, few appear to be working harder than Fabian. He fought back from injury, continues to learn and speak German to facilitate his adaptation to the Bundesliga, and is trying to stay in shape to get to one more World Cup before his career draws to an end.

“I’m going step by step. I know I can get to my third World Cup, to 2022, but I’m going to take this process on calmly,” he said. “I know that right now I’m in a squad for a pair of friendlies, but I want to go step by step.”

At this point, it’s the only thing Fabian can do. Keep working, hope his club situation improves in the winter and enjoy the time he has with El Tri.

Real Madrid stars excited at prospect of Hazard signing amid Chelsea uncertainty

The Belgian star continues to hint at an imminent switch to the Santiago Bernabeu, with the those in the Spanish capital ready to embrace his arrival

Eden Hazard’s comments regarding a possible move to Real Madrid have been well received by those already at the Santiago Bernabeu, with Goal understanding that the Chelsea forward’s transfer hints have excited star turns in the Spanish capital.

The Blancos find themselves in a position where inspiration is being sought from somewhere, with a testing start to the 2018-19 campaign seeing them currently wedged in a four-match winless run which has seen them fail to find the target.

Julen Lopetegui or one of those currently at his disposal would be the preferred choice to stand up and be counted in an hour of need, but Real will take a collective raising of spirits in any form right now.

Hazard has offered them just that, with a man considered to be performing at an elite level in the Premier League having been flirting with the idea of making a switch to Spain once more.

It is understood that the transfer talk has gone down well within the Madrid squad, with a club already boasting several superstar names on their books forever prepared to swing open their doors to another ‘Galactico’ addition.

There is a slight sense of surprise that Hazard has been so open in discussions regarding his future, with it rare for players to talk up moves when tied to contracts and caught up in endless rounds of exit speculation.

Those emotions are, however, being countered by pride, with the Blancos delighted to discover that they are held in the highest possible regard by a man performing at the peak of his powers and among the nominees for the 2018 Ballon d’Or.

The comments which have got Real buzzing came on the back of a recent outing for Hazard against Southampton, in which he took his Premier League-leading goal haul for 2018-19 to seven.

The 27-year-old forward said after that showing: “Real Madrid is the best club in the world. I don’t want to lie today.

“It is my dream since I was a kid. I was dreaming about this club. We will see. I don’t want to talk about this every day. I don’t have time, but we will talk about my future soon. I think so. It is also when you have a dream and you want to make it happen.”

Hazard followed up that revelation by stating while away on international duty that he believes a transfer to Spain will be required in order for him to get the recognition his form deserves and put him in contention to land the most prestigious of individual prizes.

If that path leaves him to Madrid, then Real are ready to welcome him with open arms.

'Bayern are keeping a close eye on Cengiz' – Roma's Under wanted in Munich

The 21-year-old Turkey international is hugely in demand and is being looked at as a possible successor to Arjen Robben in Bavaria

The chairman of Cengiz Under’s former club has insisted that Bayern Munich are monitoring the Roma and Turkey forward.

Under made his professional debut in 2014 at Altinordu, playing 51 times in the Turkish second tier before earning a move to Super Lig side Bursaspor. Nine goals in 43 games in his debut season there saw Roma splash out €13.4 million (£11.8m/$15.5m) for the right winger.

He could now be on the move again, with Bayern Munich looking to find long-term replacements for Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery, who are due to turn 35 and 36 this season respectively.

Under is a regular at Roma and after impressing there in Serie A and the Champions League, is in demand across Europe. He has been linked with clubs such as Monaco and Arsenal, but Altinordu’s chairman says that Bayern could be a likely destination for the €60m-rated (£53m/$70m) 21-year-old.

“Bayern Munich are keeping a close eye on Cengiz,” Mehmet Ozkan told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“All I can say is that he could move for a lot of money.”

Bayern could face a lot of competition for the 15-time Turkey international, with Roma sporting director Monchi confirming Barcelona interest in March. However, Monchi insisted that he was not for sale and that the Italian club had long-term plans for the winger.

“It’s true that Barcelona have an interest in the player,” Monchi said in an interview with Radyospor.

“Bayram Tutumlu [Under’s agent] has a strong relationship with Barca and he informed me that there is definitely an interest there.

“We have not received any offers for the player but it would not surprise me if he was being tracked – he is a young, talented player who is scoring a lot of goals.

“Our aim is for Cengiz to become a very important player for us because he has youth and all the qualities needed to do that.”

Under has started five of Roma’s Serie A games so far this season, scoring one goal. He also netted in their 5-0 Champions League win over Viktoria Plzen and started the 3-0 loss to Real Madrid in their opening game.
