Solari defends Kroos substitution as he cites Madrid's next generation

The Germany was taken off after just 55 minutes against Barcelona, as the Blancos fell 1-0 to their biggest rivals

Santiago Solari defended his decision to substitute Toni Kroos early in the second half of Real Madrid’s 1-0 Clasico loss to Barcelona.

Despite Barca enjoying the greater share of possession, Solari replaced Germany international Kroos with 20-year-old midfielder Federico Valverde in the 55th minute.

Madrid were unable to find a route back into the match after Ivan Rakitic’s first-half opener and fell to a defeat that leaves them 12 points behind La Liga leaders Barca.

When asked about his decision to withdraw Kroos, Solari suggested that new faces are wanted at the Santiago Bernabeu.

“Kroos is like the rest of the players, they all tried their best,” he said.

“Valverde is a young player taking his first steps in the game, like Vinicius [Junior], [Sergio] Reguilon, [Alvaro] Odriozola, who are the future of the club.”

He added to Movistar: “Anybody can be in the starting line-up. With Valverde we were looking for freshness.

“The young players are pushing. People want to see new players, it happens in football and in life.”

Gareth Bale was selected ahead of Lucas Vazquez but had a disappointing outing and was whistled off when he made way for Marco Asensio in the 61st minute.

“I think Bale has done a lot of things for the club and a lot of great things and everyone deserves respect, but the crowd are tremendous,” said Solari.

“He tried, like everyone else. We played as a team. If there was something we did well it was playing together, attacking together and defending together.”

'It was a bad knee injury' – Man Utd boss Solskjaer provides Sanchez update

The forward sustained a distention of the medial ligament during the Reds’ 3-2 win over Southampton

Manchester United will be without Alexis Sanchez for four to six weeks after he suffered a “bad” knee injury, caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed.

The Chile international was forced off in the second half of United’s game against Southampton on Saturday after he went down under a challenge from defender Jan Bednarek.

And scans later revealed he had suffered a distention of the medial ligament, ruling him out of Wednesday’s Champions League game against Paris Saint-Germain.

Speaking ahead of that second leg in Paris, Solskjaer said: “He might be out for, it was a bad knee injury, so if it is four weeks or six weeks. Hopefully, he will recover quickly.”

After losing the first leg 2-0 at Old Trafford, Solskjaer has named five youngsters in his squad for the return game at Parc des Princes and left out Jesse Lingard and France international Anthony Martial.

Teenagers Tahith Chong, Mason Greenwood, Brandon Williams, Angel Gomes and James Garner have all travelled to France.

“I think every young player at this club is dreaming of having the impact Rashy’s [Marcus Rashford] had,” Solskjaer continued. “Tomorrow night might be a chance for some of the young ones.

“Brandon, full-back, can play both sides. It is the first time he has travelled with us, he didn’t expect to come.”

Striker Rashford burst on to the scene in 2016 at the age of 18 when Louis van Gaal was in the Red Devils’ hotseat.

He scored five Premier League goals in 11 appearances that campaign and earned himself a spot in the England squad for the 2016 European Championships.

If United fail to gain a footing in the away leg and overturn the two-goal deficit, Solskjaer could be likely to give some game time to the youngsters.

The first leg remains the only game Solskjaer has lost since taking over in December, having led a considerable turnaround in the Reds’ form.

Should he steer United to a quarter-final spot, Solskjaer’s chances of being offered the permanent job this summer could increase dramatically given the disappointing performance at Old Trafford.

Man Utd interim boss Solskjaer 'plans to return to Molde' amid contract uncertainty

The Norwegian club’s CEO is confident that the 46-year-old will be back despite the manager’s uncertainty over his situation

Molde CEO Oystein Neerland has insisted that interim Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is still planning to return to the club despite the Norwegian being unsure of his contract status.

The 46-year-old was still in charge of the Eliteserien side when he was appointed interim Red Devils boss following the sacking of Jose Mourinho in December.

He was expected to return to Molde at the end of the Premier League season, with his assistant coach Erling Moe taking charge of first-team matters for the start of the 2019 season.

Solskjaer has, however, become the favourite to take the job permanently at Old Trafford after a hugely impressive three months in charge that have seen him win 13 games in all competitions.

The United legend remains unsure over his long-term future at Molde, however, suggesting that his contract at the club has expired and that he would have to negotiate a new one should he return to Norway.

He told Norwegian podcast Fotballklubben: “I’m not sure how it works. I think the contract is expired and I’m now under contract with Manchester United. I think we need a new contract there [at Molde].”

But, in response to Solskjaer’s comments, Neerland told TV2 Norway that the former Cardiff City manager is only contracted at Old Trafford until the summer and that the plan remains to have him back.

He said: “Before Christmas we signed a new agreement with Ole Gunnar for three years, until the end of the 2021 season.

“Afterwards Ole Gunnar has taken over as temporary manager at Manchester United, a job that goes on until the summer. Ole Gunnar is now employed at Manchester United, and plans to return to Molde after the season.”

Solskjaer has made a sensational start to life in charge at Old Trafford, with the calls to appoint him on a permanent basis growing ever louder with each passing victory.

He was already a hero with the United fans given his achievements as a player but the remarkable impact he has made in his short time as manager has made him even more popular.

The former striker has won 13 of his 16 matches in charge to help revive the club’s challenge for a top-four place in the Premier League.

When Solskjaer was appointed in mid-December, the Red Devils were sixth in the Premier League, 12 points outside the top four.

They have since won 10 and drawn two of their subsequent 12 league games, with Saturday’s 3-2 victory over Southampton moving them up to fourth,  just three points behind third-placed Tottenham.

They have also progressed through to the FA Cup quarter-finals, where they take on Wolves at Molineux later in March.

The only disappointment was a 2-0 home defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of the Champions League last 16.

They take on the French champions at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday with Solskjaer still confident of overturning their first-leg deficit.

Should United complete a remarkable comeback then it would only add to the calls for the Norwegian to take the job on a permanent basis, although the club’s board have thus far been tight-lipped over their plans for beyond the 2018-19 campaign.

De Gea yet to agree Man Utd extension but Solskjaer hoping for positive contract update

The Spain international goalkeeper remains in talks regarding fresh terms at Old Trafford, with his current boss hoping to see agreement reached

David de Gea is yet to commit to a contract extension at Manchester United, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is hoping to be made aware of positive developments in talks.

The Red Devils have moved to secure the services of their Spanish goalkeeper through to 2020.

A 12-month option in his current contract has been taken up, but no progress has been made in prolonging his association with the club past that point.

Discussions are ongoing and Solskjaer is eager to see an agreement reached which suits all parties, with United understandably reluctant to part with a model of consistency and one of the finest performers on the planet in his chosen position.

Quizzed for an update on talks, the Red Devils’ interim boss said: “No updates from me. The club and David are in dialogue, hopefully, they’ll agree, it’s out of my hands but I’m sure we’ll do what we can.

“David’s done fantastic since he came, the club really showed how much they wanted him back in the day when Eric [Steele] and the gaffer found him.

“There were probably keepers there better at that time but the belief the manager showed in him with the criticism he got paid dividends.

“He’s been player of the year I don’t know how many years, we’re grateful to have him.

“Then again, we’ve got Sergio [Romero] and Lee [Grant], a fantastic goalkeeper department

“I don’t think there’s any manager in the world who’ll beat me in that respect.”

De Gea is a record-setting four-time Player of the Year at Old Trafford.

His most recent prize, secured in 2017-18, lifted him above the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo on that particular roll of honour.

A standing among the United greats is already secured, but the Red Devils are eager to ensure that they remain the ones to benefit from his stunning skill set.

They have been fortunate enough to work with a number of legendary goalkeepers during the Premier League era and De Gea is merely the latest to join a star-studded club.

Asked how the Spaniard compares to former favourites such as Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar, Solskjaer said: “It’s difficult to compare them, but Edwin and Peter were never player of the year.

“David’s meant so many points for us over the years and I would say he’s the best goalkeeper in the world.

“Peter was at the time and Edwin at the time as well. I’m delighted with David and his personality is fantastic. Such a humble and confident boy.”

Jurgen Klopp is expecting Goodison Park to be raucous on Sunday, when he takes his Liverpool side to the venue on Sunday for a derby meeting in which the stakes are high for the Reds.

Questions over his side’s bottle were being asked prior to their 5-0 midweek win over Watford, in which Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk netted doubles, sandwiching an effort from Divock Origi.

The Reds had drawn three of their four previous matches, held scoreless by both Bayern Munich and Manchester United in their preceding games.

But after an avalanche of goals on Wednesday, the confidence has returned to the Anfield side, according to left-back Andy Robertson.

“A lot of people have been saying that we lost our svanpark,” the defender, who has eight assists for the campaign, said. “You can kind of agree, we had one shot on target against United and it was Daniel Sturridge’s shot from 45 yards which trickled into David de Gea’s arms.

“We didn’t create enough and we have to look at that. But against Watford it could have been more than five. Maybe it was the spark that we’ve been needing – maybe it will be the spark that gives the lads the confidence in front of goal again, I’m sure it will.”

Meanwhile, unlikely goal hero Van Dijk is eager for the second Merseyside derby of the season.

“It’s special but we want to show our quality, win the game – hopefully with good football but if not, we are going to fight for it,” he told Sky Sports.

“I didn’t look at recent games from them but it will be a game full of passion.”

If the Dutchman had looked at Everton’s recent results, he would likely have been left unimpressed.

The 1-0 derby loss to the Reds on December 2, memorable for Jordan Pickford’s incredible late error, sparked a side that has seen them win just four times in 15 subsequent Premier League fixtures. Additionally, they have lost four of their last six, with the exceptions against Cardiff and Huddersfield – two clubs fighting for their lives.

Everton boss Marco Silva wants his players to remember they hurt they suffered at Anfield, when Klopp controversially sprinted onto the field to celebrate Origi’s winner, to propel them to a better outcome this time around.

“What I felt was a special match for both teams. They celebrated that lucky goal. Like us and for them, they celebrated like a World Cup final,” he said.

This will be the 200th top-flight match between these sides, and few have been quite so important.

Jordan Henderson’s inclusion over James Milner for the visitors was more of a precaution, Klopp stated.

“Millie just felt  his hamstring a little bit,” the German said pre-match.

“If Millie gives a warning sign… I think he would have been fine but the last two days he felt it still. So there is no reason for risk, especially when we have options on the bench, which we had in the last game.

“Hendo is a very, very important player for us, so it’s good he can be back.

Juve on alert: Exiled Icardi may have already played his final game for Inter

The striker hasn’t featured for the Nerazzurri since being stripped of the captaincy earlier this month and a summer transfer now looks inevitable

Antonio Cassano spent a significant chunk of his disastrous spell at Real Madrid having sex and eating cake. In that order.

“In Madrid, I had a friend who was a hotel waiter,” the retired 36-year-old explained in his autobiography. “His job was to bring me three or four pastries after I had sex.

“He would bring the pastries up the stairs, I would escort the woman to him and we would make an exchange: he would take the girl and I would take the pastries.

“Sex and then food: a perfect night.”

Fair to say, then, that Cassano knows a thing or two about getting one’s priorities wrong.

So, it was intriguing that during an appearance on Tika Taka last weekend opposite Mauro Icardi’s wife and agent, Wanda, he argued that the onus was on the striker to work out his current problems with both his team-mates and employers at Inter.

Icardi hasn’t played for Inter since being dramatically stripped of the captaincy without warning or explanation two weeks ago and, ostensibly, that’s because he says he has a minor knee problem.

However, Inter have already claimed recent medical tests have shown no change in the forward’s physical condition since he was last assessed, at the start of the season.

So, while the notoriously combustible Cassano said he could understand why Icardi might be hurting emotionally right now, the former Italy international nonetheless urged the dethroned captain to swallow his pride and take the first step towards reconciliation.

“I would have gone crazy [in his situation], but he doesn’t have to stay out of the team until June,” Cassano reasoned.

“He needs to go into the dressing room and clarify his position with the players for his own sake.

“I say it as an Interista : he needs to talk to those who have problems with him, shake their hands and, in June, what will be, will be.”

Wanda, though, disagreed entirely, telling Cassano that her husband is the innocent victim in this embarrassingly public affair.

“Mauro must go to the dressing room to resolve problems?” she asked, incredulous. “Enough of this rubbish! He’s done nothing. It’s all non-existent drama.”

If only that were true.

While we still do not know for sure what provoked Inter’s decision to take the captain’s armband away from Icardi and give it to Samir Handanovic, this whole episode has undeniably descended into a farce, one that is benefiting nobody.

Icardi is clearly devastated, while his wife is being vilified by fans and journalists alike. A disgruntled fan even threw a rock at her car while her children were in the back. The atmosphere has become that toxic.

Inter’s coach Luciano Spalletti and his players are being asked about their former captain constantly. They look as exhausted as they are irritated by all of the speculation .

“We can’t talk about this every day,” a bewildered Handanovic sighed after last weekend’s 3-3 draw at Fiorentina.

So, contrary to Wanda’s claim, the drama is very real, and un-ending.

And she is as complicit as anyone in that regard, given she appears on Tika Taka every week to curry support for her crestfallen husband.

Her tearful account of the effect losing the captaincy has had on Icardi (“it’s as if they have cut off his leg”) bizarrely led to Inter CEO Beppe Marotta ringing in to console Wanda live on air.

Wanda was even asked in an interview with Gente earlier this week if a rumoured affair with Icardi’s team-mate Marcelo Brozovic was to blame for the bad blood between her husband and the Croatian members of the Inter squad.

This is football as reality TV and there is a disturbingly sexist undercurrent to how Wanda is being treated by the press and supporters.

Certainly, anyone with female friends or colleagues in the industry would doubtless agree when the Argentine says, “It’s very difficult to be a woman in this macho world.”

She has endured several character assassinations in the past fortnight alone, the most damning of which came from her ex-husband, and Icardi’s ex-team-mate, Maxi Lopez, and Abian Morano, Icardi’s former agent. Both clearly have their own agendas against Wanda.

The club have also had enough of someone they saw as an obstacle in their attempts to persuade their former skipper to sign a new contract at San Siro.

As Icardi’s partner, Wanda clearly wants to do right by her husband and client.

Inter, though, have been repeatedly stated that their sole aim is to do right by the club and it’s obvious that many members of the Inter dressing room welcomed the decision to strip Icardi of the captaincy.

Wanda undoubtedly played a part in that by blaming Icardi’s team-mates for his recent goal drought before then, even more gallingly, speculating that “psychological problems” may have led to Ivan Perisic’s request to leave during the January transfer window, thus breaking that mythical bond between dressing room and the public domain.

Certainly, it was not a surprise to see the Croatia winger take issue with Matteo Politano for imitating Icardi’s famed ‘cupped ears’ celebration in last weekend’s 3-3 draw at Fiorentina.

Even less shocking was the fact that immediately after a game that featured a controversial late penalty awarded against Inter, Nara went looking for sympathy again.

“In football, there are so many injustices, like this penalty, Perisic’s attitude and keeping Icardi at home,” she lamented.

“He is someone who gave everything to Inter but is now being painted like a monster, which he’s not.”

Unfortunately, though, her appraisal of the situation once again cast her husband in an unfavourable light, given she essentially admitted that it wasn’t a knee problem “keeping Icardi at home”.

Icardi retains the support of many members of the Inter squad but even his closest allies are now said to have acknowledged that the controversy threatens to derail their bid to secure Champions League football for next season.

The Icardi affair has become a major distraction. They want it resolved. But they also want their star striker back.

As Cassano said, “They’re playing for third place; they need his goals.”

They also need an apology, though, and if Wanda’s words are anything to go by, Icardi is unlikely to issue one. He wants the captain’s armband back but Inter vice-president Javier Zanetti says that is not going to happen.

All of which means Icardi may well have played his last game for Inter.

Given his buy-out clause is €110 million, the prolific No.9 represents an attractive proposition for numerous top clubs.

Napoli wanted him as a replacement for Gonzalo Higuain in 2016, while Juventus tried to sign him last year before acquiring Cristiano Ronaldo and, according to Wanda, Inter were willing to let him go to Turin.

Despite the Icardis reluctance to leave their Milanese base, both clubs are expected to renew their interest in the 26-year-old.

So, just like everyone else at Inter, they will be watching with interest the next time Wanda appears on television to try to ascertain the Icardis next move.

It is a ludicrous situation. So ludicrous, in fact, that Antonio Cassano has become the voice of reason.

Food for thought for the Icardis, perhaps…

Recruitment guru Monchi leaves Roma amid Arsenal & PSG links

The transfer specialist, who has been touted as Sven Mislintat’s successor at the Emirates, has ended his time with the Serie A side

Roma have announced that sporting director Monchi has left the club.

The 50-year-old departs the Italian capital after just under two years in the role.

His exit comes only a day after head coach Eusebio Di Francesco was sacked in the wake of Roma’s Champions League last-16 exit to Porto.

Monchi was appointed on a four-year deal in April 2017 after a hugely successful spell at Sevilla, where he helped the club to win five Europa Leagues and two Copas del Rey over 11 seasons.

However, he has come in for criticism for Roma’s recruitment policy over the last year in particular and reportedly clashed with fans following the loss in Porto this week.

Monchi issued an apology to supporters after it was claimed he made a threat towards them at the airport, although he insisted his comments had been misreported.

Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain are among the teams linked with a move for the former goalkeeper, who spent his whole playing career with Sevilla before retiring in 1999.

Monchi, who signed players including Robin Olsen, Patrik Schick, Javier Pastore and Gregoire Defrel ahead of the 2018-19 season, will be replaced by Frederic Massara.

“I would like to thank president [James] Pallotta, the club’s management, staff, players and fans for their support during my time at the club,” said Monchi in a statement released by the club.

“I wish Roma a lot of success in the future.”

Roma chief executive Guido Fienga added: “I want to put on record our thanks to Monchi for his dedication during his time at the club and we wish him all the best for his future endeavours in football.”

According to reports, Claudio Ranieri is expected to be appointed as Di Francesco’s successor.

Report outlines Pogba’s huge demands to stay at Man Utd

Paul Pogba will ask Manchester United for a huge pay rise if he is to sign a new contract with the Premier League side, according to a report.

Pogba remains at Old Trafford despite the France star making clear his desire to leave during the summer.

The Red Devils are reportedly willing to offer Pogba a new contract, with former United captain Gary Neville recently saying that the club should steer well clear of negotiating with his agent Mino Raiola.

And now Okdiario (via Goal) claims that Raiola wants United to stump up €35milllion (£30m) a year to tie Pogba down to a new deal at the club.

That would see the France international taking home a weekly wage of over €600,000 a week if United agreed to the deal.

There have been rumours that Pogba could move to Real Madrid over the summer with his contract at Old Trafford expires in 2021.

By demanding a huge amount of money, Raiola is understood to be trying to force United into allowing Pogba to move to Real.

Pep leaps to Silva’s defence over accusations of racism

Pep Guardiola has strongly defended Bernardo Silva against accusations of racism following a controversial tweet to Manchester City team-mate Benjamin Mendy.

City boss Guardiola was asked for his opinion on the matter after his side opened their bid for a third successive Carabao Cup triumph with a comfortable 3-0 win at Preston.

Silva posted pictures on social media on Sunday comparing Mendy, with whom he also played at Monaco, to the character on a packet of Conguitos chocolates.

Anti-discriminatory body Kick It Out called on the Football Association to take action, referring to the contents of post as a racist stereotype. The governing body has written to City requesting their observations.

Guardiola said: “I don’t know what is going to happen but they should put the focus on other issues. Bernardo is one of the most lovely people I have ever met in my life.

“He speaks four or five languages – that is the best way to understand how open-minded he is – and one of his best friends is Mendy. He is like a brother for him. The image for the two is not about the colour of the skin.

“If they want to do that, to ask Bernardo, we’d be open to talk, but first to do that you want to know exactly which person are you talking about.

“If something happens it would be a mistake because Bernardo is an exceptional person.”

Silva started and Mendy appeared as a second-half substitute in what was a routine City victory in the third-round tie at Deepdale.

Teenagers Eric Garcia and Taylor Harwood-Bellis shone in defence while Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus struck before Ryan Ledson turned into his own net.

City have not lost a tie in this competition for almost three years.

Guardiola said: “I grew up in the Barcelona Academy. At Barcelona from 13 years old they showed me you have to try to win every single game.

“I think this team tried that in the previous season. That is what you have to do – come here, try to win.

“You cannot do what we’ve done in previous seasons if you don’t take every single game seriously and try to win.

“Now we are in the next round. We will see the draw and, I assure you, we will try to win. It doesn’t matter which players play.”
